Dear Parishioners, How can we, like John the Baptist, prepare ourselves for the coming of Jesus Christ today and everyday and when he comes again to bring us fully into his everlasting kingdom? John the Baptist tells us that the first step is conversion and repentance (Matthew 3:2; Luke 3:7). Conversion involves receiving God's word into our heart and mind and allowing his Word to change our attitudes and wrong ways of thinking and judging. Repentance is the deliberate and literal turning away (metanoia) from sin and turning to God to receive his pardon, healing, and strength to do what is good and reject what is wrong and evil. John saw from a distance what Jesus the Messiah would accomplish through his death and resurrection - pardon for our sins, healing and restoration, and eternal life for all who would believe in the Lord Jesus. Are you hungry for the Word of God and do you allow God's word to transform the way you think, speak, and live your life? St Augustine of Hippo, (430-543 AD.) in Touching Jesus by faith says: “Consider the text 'And all flesh shall see the salvation of God' (Luke 3:6). There is no difficulty at all in taking this to mean 'And all flesh shall see the Christ of God.' After all, Christ was seen in the body and will be seen in the body when he comes again to judge the living and the dead. Scripture has many texts showing that he is the 'salvation of God,' particularly the words of the venerable old man, Simeon, who took the child in his arms and said, 'Now let your servant go in peace, O Lord, according to your word, because my eyes have seen your salvation' (Luke 2:29-30).” Yours in Christ, Fr Robert Newton 1) City of God, St Augustine, Book 22 chapter 29 p.1084 Penguin Classics 1984

Hymn: Lord, your almighty word TiS 447
1. Lord, your almighty word chaos and darkness heard, and took their flight: hear us, we humbly pray, and where the gospel day sheds not its glorious ray, let there be light.
3. Spirit of truth and love, life-giving holy dove, speed forth your flight; move on the waters’ face, bearing the lamp of grace, and in earth’s darkest place let there be light.
2. Saviour, who came to give those who in darkness live healing and sight, health to the sick in mind, sight to the inly blind, now to all humankind let there be light.
4. Holy and blessèd Three, glorious Trinity, Wisdom, Love, Might, boundless as ocean’s tide rolling in fullest pride, through the earth far and wide, let there be light. John Marriott 1780–1825 alt.
Invocation: Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever. Greeting: The Lord be with you. And also with you.
3
Sentence: By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. Luke 1.78–79 Prayer of Preparation: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: God of love and peace, you know what we think and feel. Touch our hearts that our thoughts and actions may be good so that we may love you and honour you, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN. The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’
Kyrie eleison (Dudman Setting)

The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. God of mercy and grace, we have sometimes thought wrong things, and done wrong things and we have not always loved each other as we should. We are sorry. Forgive us and help us to love and obey you, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Absolution (Celebrant) Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Prayer of the Day God of our salvation, you straighten the winding ways of our hearts and smooth the paths made rough by sin: keep our hearts watchful in holiness, and bring to perfection the good you have begun in us. We ask this through him whose coming is certain, whose Day draws near, your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD First Reading: Malachi 3.1-14 (GNT) 3 The LORD Almighty answers, “I will send my messenger to prepare the way for me. Then the Lord you are looking for will suddenly come to his Temple. The messenger you long to see will come and proclaim my covenant.” 2 But who will be able to endure the day when he comes? Who will be able to survive when he appears? He will be like strong soap, like a fire that refines metal. 3 He will come to judge like one who refines and purifies silver. As a metalworker refines silver and gold, so the LORD's messenger will purify the priests, so that they will bring to the LORD the right kind of offerings. 4 Then the offerings which the people of Judah and Jerusalem bring to the LORD will be pleasing to him, as they used to be in the past. 5 The LORD Almighty says, “I will appear among you to judge, and I will testify at once against those who practice magic, against adulterers, against those who give false testimony, those who cheat employees out of their wages, and those who take advantage of widows, orphans, and foreigners—against all who do not respect me. 6 “I am the LORD, and I do not change. And so you, the descendants of Jacob, are not yet completely lost. 7 You, like your ancestors before you, have turned away from my laws and have not kept them. Turn back to me, and I will turn to you. But you ask, ‘What must we do to turn back to you?’ 8 I ask you, is it right for a person to cheat God? Of course not, yet you are cheating me. ‘How?’ you ask. In the matter of tithes and offerings. 9 A curse is on all of you because the whole nation is cheating me. 10 Bring the full amount of your tithes to the Temple, so that there will be plenty of food there. Put me to the test and you will see that I will open the windows of heaven and pour out on you in abundance all kinds of good things. 11 I will not let insects destroy your crops, and your grapevines will be loaded with grapes. 12 Then the people of all nations will call you happy, because your land will be a good place to live. 13 “You have said terrible things about me,” says the LORD. “But you ask, ‘What have we said about you?’ 14 You have said, ‘It's useless to serve God. What's the use of doing what he says or of trying to show the LORD Almighty that we are sorry for what we have done?
Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD

Psalm: Song of Zechariah Blessed are you, Lord, the God of Israel: you have come to your people and set them free. You have raised up for us a mighty Saviour: born of the house of your servant David. Through your holy prophets, you promised of old: to save us from our enemies, from the hands of all who hate us, To show mercy to our forebears: and to remember your holy covenant. This was the oath you swore to our father Abraham: to set us free from the hands of our enemies, Free to worship you without fear: holy and righteous before you, all the days of our life. And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High: for you will go before the Lord to prepare the way, To give God’s people knowledge of salvation: by the forgiveness of their sins. In the tender compassion of our God: the dawn from on high shall break upon us, To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death: and to guide our feet into the way of peace.
Second Reading: Philippians 1.1-11 (Phillips) 1 1-2 Paul and Timothy, true servants of Jesus Christ, to the bishops, deacons and all true Christians at Philippi, grace and peace from God our Father and Jesus Christ the Lord! 3-6 I thank God for you Christians at Philippi whenever I think of you. My constant prayers for you are a real joy, for they bring back to my mind how we have worked together for the Gospel from the earliest days until now. I feel sure that the one who has begun his good work in you will go on developing it until the day of Jesus Christ. 7
7-11 It
is only natural that I should feel like this about you all—you are very dear to me. For during the time I was in prison as well as when I was out defending and demonstrating the power of the Gospel we shared together the grace of God. God knows how much I long, with the deepest Christian love and affection, for your companionship. My prayer for you is that you may have still more love—a love that is full of knowledge and wise insight. I want you to be able always to recognise the highest and the best, and to live sincere and blameless lives until the day of Jesus Christ. I want to see your lives full of true goodness, produced by the power that Jesus Christ gives you to the praise and glory of God. Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD Gradual Hymn: The advent of our God TiS 271 (Tune 448)
1. The advent of our God with eager prayers we greet, and singing hasten on his road his coming reign to meet.
4. As judge, on clouds of light, he soon will come again, his scattered people to unite, with them in heaven to reign.
2. The everlasting Son was born to make us free; and he a servant’s form put on to gain our liberty.
5. Then evil flee away before the rising dawn! Let our old nature day by day God’s image still put on.
3. Let Zion now arise to greet her infant king, and gladly take with thankful heart the peace he comes to bring.
6. Praise to the incarnate Son who comes to set us free, with Father, Spirit, ever one to all eternity. Arrangement © Australian Hymn Book Co Charles Coffin 1676–1749 tr. John Chandler 1806–76 and others

WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET OUR LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD. ALLELUIA – Sung by ALL
The Lord be with you AND ALSO WITH YOU The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Luke chapter 3 beginning at the 1st verse.
3 1-6 In the fifteenth year of the reign of the Emperor Tiberius (a year when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea Herod tetrarch of Galilee, Philip, his brother, tetrarch of the territory of Iturea and Trachonitis and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene while Annas and Caiaphas were the High Priests) the word of God came to John, the son of Zacharias, while he was in the desert. He went into the whole country round about the Jordan proclaiming baptism as a mark of a complete change of heart and of the forgiveness of sins, as the book of the prophet Isaiah says—‘The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill brought low; and the crooked places shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth; and all flesh shall see the salvation of God’. Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

THE BAPTISM When Jesus had risen from the dead, he commanded his followers to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. We have come together today in obedience to that command. In baptism, we are joined to Christ, and made members of his Church. Baptism of children is a celebration of new life and the promise of eternal life, and an acknowledgement of their need for care and protection. While we focus on the grace of God given to those who are baptized, we also acknowledge that spiritual growth depends on parents and godparents, and the wider circle of family and friends, who are the examples and influence that mould a child’s character. In this service of baptism we bring Wesley into God’s presence that he may be enfolded in the grace of the Holy Spirit. Parents and Godparents who bring children for baptism must express their own trust and commitment to the promises of God, and their intention to bring up the children in the faith and practice of the Church.
The Baptism party gathers around the font. The parents and godparents are asked the questions: Q/ Before God and this congregation, you must affirm your belief in God and so I ask: Do you Believe in God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit? A/ I do. Q/ Will you accept the responsibilities placed upon you in bringing Wesley for baptism? A/ I will. Q/ By your prayers and example, by your friendship and love, will you encourage him in the life and faith of the Christian community? A/ I will. Q/ As your life will be an example to Wesley, will you turn away from evil thoughts, words and actions? A/ I will. Q/ Will you affirm Christian values, especially those of honesty, compassion and mercy? A/ I will. Priest to the congregation: You have heard our brothers and sisters respond to Christ. Will you support them in this calling? ALL: WE WILL. Priest: Almighty God lead you in the light of Christ to his everlasting kingdom. AMEN. 12
Prayers and Blessing of the water [Let us pray:] Grant, merciful God, that Wesley may be so united with Christ in baptism that your new nature may be raised up in him where the fruit of your Spirit may grow and flourish. Give to family and friends the desire to share what you have revealed in your Holy Gospel. We give you thanks that at the beginning of creation your Holy Spirit moved upon the waters to bring forth light and life. With water you cleanse and replenish the earth; and through the waters of the Red Sea you led your people by Moses out of slavery into freedom, and brought them through the river Jordan into the land of promise. We give you thanks for your Son, Jesus Christ: for his baptism by John, for his anointing in the Holy Spirit, and that through the deep waters of death Jesus delivered us from our sins and was raised to new life in triumph. We give you thanks for the grace of the Holy Spirit who leads us to your kingdom. And now we give you thanks that you have called Wesley to new birth in your Church through the waters of baptism. + Pour out your Holy Spirit in blessing and sanctify this water so that all who are baptized may be made one with Christ in his death and resurrection, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN.
An affirmation of faith Priest: I ask the congregation to join with the parents and godparents in affirming the faith of the church. Do you believe in God the Father? A/: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in God the Son? A/: I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? A/: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. AMEN. 13
The Baptism Priest: Wesley George, I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, AMEN. I sign you with the sign of the cross to show that you are marked as Christ’s own forever. (Oil that has been blessed by a bishop is used in anointing to symbolize being chosen in God, as were the priests and prophets of the Old Testament, and the New Testament understanding that we are all anointed in the Spirit through belief in Christ.)
Live as a disciple of Christ; fight the good fight, finish the race, keep the faith. ALL: Confess Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, look for his coming in glory. Priest: God has called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. ALL: Shine as a light in the world to the glory of God the Father. Priest: God has called you into his church. ALL: We therefore receive and welcome you as a member with us of the body of Christ, as a child of the one heavenly Father, and as an inheritor of the kingdom of God. Prayers for the child, parents and godparents Merciful God, in your infinite love you have made a new covenant with us in Jesus Christ, promising to be our God and the God of our children. Enable all who are baptized in your name to live as your faithful people. Fulfil your promises for Welsey, we pray, and grant that he may grow in your faith and service. We pray for Stephen and Anna, that in your Spirit of wisdom, their family may grow in your love, and their home share in the joy of your eternal kingdom. And we pray for Wesley’s godparents Andrew and Sarah; enable them to share with their godchild what you have revealed to us of your love in your holy gospel. We ask this in the name of our Saviour Jesus Christ, AMEN.

Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind.

Final Hymn: The voice of God goes out to all the world TiS 282
1. The voice of God goes out to all the world; his glory speaks across the universe. The great King’s herald cries from star to star: ‘With power, with justice, he will walk his way.’ 2. The Lord has said, ‘Receive my messenger, my promise to the world, my pledge made flesh, a lamp to every nation, light from light’: with power, with justice, he will walk his way. 3. The broken reed he will not trample down, nor set his heel upon the dying flame. He binds the wounds, and health is in his hand: with power, with justice, he will walk his way. 4. Anointed with the Spirit and with power, he comes to crown with comfort all the weak, to show the face of justice to the poor: with power, with justice, he will walk his way. 5. His touch will bless the eyes that darkness held, the lame shall run, the halting tongue shall sing, and prisoners laugh in light and liberty: with power, with justice, he will walk his way. Assistance with caring I am seeking assistance from members of the parish with being in the Vicarage with my wife, Susan, while she is asleep in the afternoon. Currently I am not able to get out except to do the relatively mundane tasks of shopping and the like. It would be great if I could have a 2-3 hour period once a week to enable me to exercise and recreate, perhaps even go the movies. It would only involve being in the Vicarage as Susan is asleep from 2 / 2.30 pm until 5 30 pm when her evening carer arrives. I would always be back before then. If anyone wants to explore the opportunity please ring me on 0423 568 048 or call into the Vicarage any morning, particularly on Sunday. Robert Holland, Associate Priest The December issue of TMA (The Melbourne Anglican) is now available in the foyer/narthex. This issue includes: • A front cover Christmas feature ‘Light of the World’; • A report of the recent ordination of 26 priests, including, it is thought, the first Indonesian to be made an Anglican priest in Australia; • Archbishops Freier and Welby respond to the Paris attacks; Melbourne priest and former Archdeacon of France, the Revd Ken Letts, reflects on why Paris was the target of the attacks; and community worker for TEAR Australia, Dave Andrews, warns of the dangers of ‘closed set religion’; • As world leaders meet in Paris to discuss climate change, climate scientist Dr Mick Pope explains why global warming is a fact and why Christians should act; and Orthodox priest Dr John Chryssavgis calls for repentance and fasting for the way we have abused the earth; • ‘The wounded God is with us in our suffering’ – reports on Dr John Dickson’s keynote address to the recent Peter Corney Training Centre Conference on ‘Suffering and the God question’; and a workshop by the Centre’s Director, the Revd Tracy Lauersen; • A profile of Dorothy Day, an ‘Earthy woman with a divine passion for justice’ who was recently named by Pope Francis in his speech to the US Congress as one of four “great Americans”; • One of Australia’s leading Ear, Nose and Throat surgeons, who holds the William Gibson Chair of Otolaryngology at the University of Melbourne, Professor Stephen O’Leary, describes in a personal testimony his Christian journey and calling as a scientist, clinician and researcher, and how music has also nurtured his Anglican faith. With many thanks and every blessing for a happy and holy Christmas and New Year, Roland Ashby, Editor, TMA 22
