Dear Parishioners, Many churches in the East and West, since the early first centuries of the Christian era, have marked special seasons to celebrate the central truths of the Christian faith. The Advent season which precedes Christmas and Epiphany reminds us that we are a pilgrim people, aliens and exiles in this age who long for our true home with God in his heavenly kingdom, and who await with joyful hope the return of the Lord Jesus at the end of the age. 2 Peter 3:8–9 reads: ‘But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.’ No one but the Father in heaven knows the day. But it is a certain fact that we are living in the end times, the close of this present age. The end times begin with the first coming of Jesus Christ (his Incarnation which we celebrate at Christmas and Epiphany) and culminates in his final return on the Day of Judgment. Last Sunday at our Annual Meeting we had a secret ballot on the continued use of incense at Divine Worship at Holy Trinity, this followed a trial begun in June. Of those who could vote (104) 61 cast a vote (58.6% turnout) with 33 against (54%) and 25 for (41%) and 3 (5%) abstentions. This snapshot of feeling in the parish towards the use of incense indicates that there are mixed views which neither preclude its use nor advocate its use every Sunday. As a way going forward in consultation with the Parish Wardens I have decided that we shall use incense on the 2nd Sunday of the month only at the 10am service. This will be advertised in the pew sheet and on the web site. Also I expect to use incense on Maundy Thursday, Easter Eve and other special times decided by me with notice at least a week in advance and again in consultation with the Parish Wardens. The Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. Come let us take this holy sacrament of the body and blood of Christ in remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The Choir sings: “Creator of the Stars of night�, John Scott. Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Our trading table ladies are getting a little tired and we really need some new cooks as well as some help on the actual day with the selling! Anglicare will be collecting toys and gifts for Christmas during November, ready for wrapping and preparing for distribution in December. The Parish has been issued with a building permit by Boroondara Council for our new development-GOOD NEWS! Vicar and Churchwardens HOLY TRINITY CHRISTMAS CAKES A limited number of Holy Trinity Christmas Cakes will be available for sale on Sunday 6 December 2015 on a stall. Each cake is baked to a traditional recipe using full fruit and the best available ingredients. There are two sizes of cakes being offered this year. A 6 inch Christmas cake - $25.00 each and an 8 inch Christmas cake - $40.00 (Any donations towards that expenditure would be most gratefully received.) Any queries in relation to the sale of Christmas Cake may be directed to Leonie Bird (0409 860 026; leoniebird@vicbar.com.au) or Liz Cook. Assistance with caring I am seeking assistance from members of the parish with being in the Vicarage with my wife, Susan, while she is asleep in the afternoon. Currently I am not able to get out except to do the relatively mundane tasks of shopping and the like. It would be great if I could have a 2-3 hour period once a week to enable me to exercise and recreate, perhaps even go the movies. It would only involve being in the Vicarage as Susan is asleep from 2 / 2.30 pm until 5 30 pm when her evening carer arrives. I would always be back before then.
