Hymn: Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness TiS 454

1. Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness, bow down before him, his glory proclaim; gold of obedience and incense of lowliness bring, and adore him: the Lord is his name. 2. Low at his feet lay your burden of carefulness, high on his heart he will bear it for you, comfort your sorrows, and answer your prayerfulness, guiding your steps in the way best for you. 3. Fear not to enter his courts in the slenderness of the poor wealth you would reckon to own: truth in its beauty and love in its tenderness, these are the offerings to bring to his throne. 4. These, though we bring them in trembling and fearfulness, he will accept for the name that is dear, mornings of joy give for evenings of tearfulness, trust for our trembling, and hope for our fear. 5. Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness, bow down before him, his glory proclaim; gold of obedience and incense of lowliness bring, and adore him: the Lord is his name. John Samuel Bewley Monsell 1811–75 alt.

Invocation: Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever. 3

Greeting: The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Sentence: Whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it. Mark 10.15 Prayer of Preparation: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’

Kyrie eleison (Dudman)

4

The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Absolution (Celebrant) Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Gloria [Dudman]

Prayer of the Day Loving God, you have made us in your own image, creating us male and female, and you have consecrated the covenant of marriage so that in it is signified the spiritual marriage between Christ and his Church: pour your grace upon all who are called to this holy state, that, keeping their promise of faithfulness to each other, they may reflect in their lives your love for us all; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV) First Reading: Job 1.1; 2.1-10 1 1 There was once a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job. That man was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil. 2 1 One day the heavenly beings came to present themselves before the Lord , and Satan also came among them to present himself before the Lord . 2 The Lord said to Satan, ‘Where have you come from?’ Satan answered the Lord , ‘From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it.’ 3 The Lord said to Satan, ‘Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man who fears God and turns away from evil. He still persists in his integrity, although you incited me against him, to destroy him for no reason.’ 4 Then Satan answered the Lord , ‘Skin for skin! All that people have they will give to save their lives.5 But stretch out your hand now and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse you to your face.’ 6 The Lord said to Satan, ‘Very well, he is in your power; only spare his life.’ 7 So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord , and inflicted loathsome sores on Job from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. 8 Job took a potsherd with which to scrape himself, and sat among the ashes. 9 Then his wife said to him, ‘Do you still persist in your integrity? Curse God, and die.’ 10 But he said to her, ‘You speak as any foolish woman would speak. Shall we receive the good at the hand of God, and not receive the bad?’ In all this Job did not sin with his lips. Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD 7

Psalm 26 Give judgement for me, O Lord, for I have walked in my integrity: I have trusted in the Lord and not wavered. 2 Put me to the test, O Lord, and prove me: try my mind and my heart. 3 For your steadfast love has been ever before my eyes: and I have walked in your truth. 4 I have not sat with deceivers: nor consorted with the hypocrites; 5 I hate the assembly of the wicked: I will not sit with the ungodly. 6 I wash my hands in innocence, O Lord: that I may go about your altar, 7 And lift up the voice of thanksgiving: to tell of all your marvellous works. 8 Lord, I love the house of your habitation: and the place where your glory dwells. 9 Do not sweep me away with sinners: nor my life with those that thirst for blood, 10 In whose hand is abomination: and their right hand is full of bribes. 11 As for me, I walk in my integrity: O ransom me and be favourable toward me. 12 My foot stands on an even path: I will bless the Lord in the great congregation. 1

Second Reading: Hebrews 1.1-4; 2.5-12 1 1 Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom he also created the worlds. 3 He is the reflection of God’s glory and the exact imprint of God’s very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs. 2 5 Now God did not subject the coming world, about which we are speaking, to angels. 6 But someone has testified somewhere, ‘What are human beings that you are mindful of them, or mortals, that you care for them? 7 You have made them for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned them with glory and honour, 8 subjecting all things under their feet.’ Now in subjecting all things to them, God left nothing outside their control. As it is, we do not yet see everything in subjection to them, 9 but we do see Jesus, who for a little while was made lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honour because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. 10 It was fitting that God, for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through sufferings. 11 For the one who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one Father. For this reason Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters, 12 saying, ‘I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters, in the midst of the congregation I will praise you.’ Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD

Gradual Hymn: How sweet the name of Jesus sounds TiS 223 (Tune 485)

1. How sweet the name of Jesus sounds in a believer’s ear! It soothes our sorrows, heals our wounds, and drives away our fear.

4. Jesus, my shepherd, brother, friend, my prophet, priest and king, my Lord, my life, my way, my end, accept the praise I bring.

2. It makes the wounded spirit whole and calms the troubled breast, is manna to the hungry soul and to the weary rest.

5. Weak is the effort of my heart, and cold my warmest thought; but when I see you as you are I’ll praise you as I ought. John Newton 1725–1807 alt.

3. Dear name! the rock on which I build, my shield and hiding-place, my never-failing treasury, filled with boundless stores of grace:

The Lord be with you AND ALSO WITH YOU The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Mark chapter 10 beginning at the 2nd verse.

Some Pharisees came, and to test him they asked, ‘Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?’ 3 He answered them, ‘What did Moses command you?’ 4 They said, ‘Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of dismissal and to divorce her.’ 5 But Jesus said to them, ‘Because of your hardness of heart he wrote this commandment for you. 6 But from the beginning of creation, “God made them male and female.” 7 “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, 8 and the two shall become one flesh.” So they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9 Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.’ 10 Then in the house the disciples asked him again about this matter. 11 He said to them, ‘Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; 12 and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.’ 13 People were bringing little children to him in order that he might touch them; and the disciples spoke sternly to them. 14 But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, ‘Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. 15 Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it.’ 16 And he took them up in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them. 2

Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

SERMON - (copy of sermon available at back of church and on web)

11

The Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

12

THE GREETING OF PEACE (all stand) {Celebrant} We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. Offertory Hymn: Your hand, O God, has guided TiS 456 1. Your hand, O God, has guided your flock from age to age; the wondrous tale is written, full clear, on every page; your people owned your goodness, and we their deeds record; and both of this bear witness: one church, one faith, one Lord. 2. Your heralds brought glad tidings to greatest, as to least; they bade them rise, and hasten to share the great King’s feast; and this was all their teaching, in every deed and word, to all alike proclaiming one church, one faith, one Lord. 3. Through many a day of darkness, through many a scene of strife, the faithful few fought bravely to guard the nation’s life. Their gospel of redemption, sin pardoned, earth restored, was all in this enfolded: one church, one faith, one Lord. 4. Your mercy will not fail us, nor leave your work undone; with your right hand to help us, the victory shall be won; and then by all creation, your name shall be adored, and this shall be our anthem: one church, one faith, one Lord. Edward Hayes Plumptre 1821–91 alt. Music by permission of the Trustee of the late Dr Basil Harwood’s settlement

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION {Celebrant} We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, For we all share in the one bread. Agnus Dei We pray together: Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us. Jesus, bearer of our sins, have mercy on us. Jesus, redeemer of the world, grant us your peace.

Come let us take this holy sacrament of the body and blood of Christ in remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving.

Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind.

17

Final Hymn: Now thank we all our God TiS 106(i)

1. Now thank we all our God with hearts and hands and voices, who wondrous things has done, in whom the world rejoices; who from our mothers’ arms has blessed us on our way with countless gifts of love, and still is ours today.

3. All praise and thanks to God who reigns in highest heaven, to Father and to Son and Spirit now be given: the one eternal God, whom heaven and earth adore, who ever was, is now, and shall be ever more. Martin Rinkart 1586–1649 tr. Catherine Winkworth 1827–78 alt.

2. O may this bounteous God through all our life be near us, with ever joyful hearts and blessèd peace to cheer us. Lord, keep us in your grace, and guide us when perplexed, and free us from all harm in this world and the next.

9.4 Parish Governance Act 2014. Dear Parishioners be advised of the change of eligibility rules for membership of the Parish Electoral Roll as of the 1st July 2014 as determined by the Melbourne Diocesan Synod: Without limiting other grounds on which a person may be taken to have regularly and habitually attended public worship in a worship centre in a parish, for the purposes of this section a person who has attended public worship at a worship centre 12 times in the preceding 12 months and three times in the preceding three months is considered to have regularly and habitually attended public worship at that worship centre. When the Parish Electoral Roll Committee meets in November the above criteria will have to be applied without fear or favour. In plain English if you have not attended a public worship service 12 times during the year and 3 times in the preceding months of the Annual Meeting in late November your name will have to be deleted from the Parish Electoral Roll and you will not be eligible to vote or speak unless invited at the Annual Meeting.
