Dear Parishioners, In the Old Testament bread and wine were offered in a thanksgiving sacrifice as a sign of recognition to the Creator as the giver and sustainer of life. Melchizedek, who was both a priest and king (Genesis 14:18; Hebrews 7:1-4), offered a sacrifice of bread and wine. During the eve of Passover drinking wine and eating bread were a part of the seder meal performed by all faithful Jews. At the Last Supper when Jesus blessed the cup of wine, he gave it to his disciples saying, "Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins" (Matthew 26:28). Jesus was pointing to the sacrifice he was about to make on the cross, when he would shed his blood for us - as an atoning sacrifice for our sins and the sins of the world. His death on the cross fulfilled the sacrifice of the paschal (passover) lamb whose blood spared the Israelites from death in Egypt. St Paul tells us that "Christ, our paschal lamb, has been sacrificed" (1 Corinthians 5:7). He echoes the words of John the Baptist who called Jesus the "Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world" (John 1:29). Jesus' passing over to his Father by his death and resurrection - the new passover - is anticipated in the Last Supper and celebrated in the Eucharist, Mass or Holy Communion which fulfils the Jewish Passover and anticipates the final Passover of the Church in the glory of God's kingdom. When the Lord Jesus commands his disciples to eat his flesh and drink his blood, he invites us to take his life into the very centre of our being. The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint John chapter 6 beginning at the 51st verse. GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. ALMIGHTY and everliving God, who by thy holy Apostle hast taught us to make prayers, and supplications, and to give thanks for all men; We humbly beseech thee most mercifully to receive these our prayers, which we offer unto thy Divine Majesty; beseeching thee to inspire continually the Universal Church with the spirit of truth, unity, and concord: And grant, that all they who do confess thy holy Name may agree in the truth of thy holy Word, and live in unity, and godly love. We beseech thee also to save and defend all Christian Kings, Princes, and Governors; and specially thy Servant ELIZABETH our Queen; that under her we may be godly and quietly governed: And grant unto her whole Council, and to all that are put in authority under her, that they may truly and impartially administer justice, to the punishment of wickedness and vice, and to the maintenance of thy true religion, and virtue. When the Priest, standing before the Table, hath so ordered the Bread and Wine, that he may with the more readiness and decency break the Bread before the people, and take the Cup into his hands, he shall say the Prayer of Consecration, as followeth. Come, let us take this Holy Sacrament of the body and blood of Christ in remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving. BAPTISED CHRISTIANS WHO RECEIVE HOLY COMMUNION IN THEIR OWN CHURCH ARE INVITED TO SHARE COMMUNION WITH US. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind. 14
Let us pray in the words that our Lord Jesus Christ has taught us: OUR Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Mothers Union-- a retiring collection for the Mothers Union Project for 2015 will be held on Sunday 30th August, please support this worthy cause. Trading Table There will be no trading table next month but one on the first Sunday in October.(4th), then none in November and in December it will be our normal Christmas street stall on the 2nd Saturday the 12th. Our trading table ladies are getting a little tired and we really need some new cooks!! as well as some help on the actual day with the selling. Wardens will meet next Tuesday 18th August at Barbara’s 7.30 pm and Parish Council the following week, 25th August 7.30pm in Op shop. The service at the Cathedral for Norman Curry is this coming Tuesday at 2 pm. 18th August. 16
Trinity College Theological School Inaugural Archbishop’s Dinner Wednesday 26 August 2015 6:30 pm, Trinity College Dining Hall Faith in our Future Fund Trinity College Theological School provides theological training for candidates for ordination and lay ministers. It follows the tradition of the Anglo-Catholic theology. The College has recently transformed into a full teaching college under the umbrella of the University of Divinity. At present there is an urgent need to support and strengthen the resources of the School so it continues to effectively teach and minister to ordination candidates and other theological students. Trinity is making a concerted effort this year to increase support for its theological programs. The College Board has committed an additional $100,000 a year for the next three years, to see the new and expanded staffing arrangements bedded-down, and the Advancement Office is marshalling its significant resources to substantially increase support for the School. This Dinner is a key element in this strategy. The Archbishop has added his name to the Dinner and is individually inviting people to attend. The dinner is a unique opportunity to contribute to the future development of our Diocese. Trinity needs to flourish if the rich and generous style of Anglicanism that has characterised Melbourne is to be maintained into the future. There are a number of parishes that are supporting this effort to sustain the Theological School.
