Dear Parishioners, In the Old Testament bread and wine were offered in a thanksgiving sacrifice as a sign of recognition to the Creator as the giver and sustainer of life. Melchizedek, who was both a priest and king (Genesis 14:18; Hebrews 7:1-4), offered a sacrifice of bread and wine. During the eve of Passover drinking wine and eating bread were a part of the seder meal performed by all faithful Jews. At the Last Supper when Jesus blessed the cup of wine, he gave it to his disciples saying, "Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins" (Matthew 26:28). Jesus was pointing to the sacrifice he was about to make on the cross, when he would shed his blood for us - as an atoning sacrifice for our sins and the sins of the world. His death on the cross fulfilled the sacrifice of the paschal (passover) lamb whose blood spared the Israelites from death in Egypt. St Paul tells us that "Christ, our paschal lamb, has been sacrificed" (1 Corinthians 5:7). He echoes the words of John the Baptist who called Jesus the "Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world" (John 1:29). Jesus' passing over to his Father by his death and resurrection - the new passover - is anticipated in the Last Supper and celebrated in the Eucharist, Mass or Holy Communion which fulfils the Jewish Passover and anticipates the final Passover of the Church in the glory of God's kingdom. When the Lord Jesus commands his disciples to eat his flesh and drink his blood, he invites us to take his life into the very centre of our being. That life which he offers is the very life of God himself. Yours In Christ, Fr Robert

Hymn: Lord, enthroned in heavenly splendour TiS 520

1. Lord, enthroned in heavenly splendour, first-begotten from the dead, you alone our strong defender, lifting up your people’s head: alleluia, alleluia, Jesus, true and living bread.

5. Great High Priest of our profession through the veil you entered in; by your mighty intercession grace and mercy you can win: alleluia, alleluia, only sacrifice for sin.

2. Here our humble homage pay we, here in loving reverence bow; here for faith’s discernment pray we, lest we fail to know you now: alleluia, alleluia, you are here, we ask not how.

6. Life-imparting heavenly manna, stricken rock with streaming side, heaven and earth with loud hosanna worship you, the Lamb who died, alleluia, alleluia, ris’n, ascended, glorified!

3. Though the lowliest form now veils you as of old in Bethlehem, here as there your angels hail you, branch and flower of Jesse’s stem; alleluia, alleluia, we in worship join with them.

George Hugh Bourne 1840–1925 alt.

Invocation: Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever. Greeting: The Lord be with you.

And also with you. 3

Sentence: Jesus said, ‘Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them.’ John 6.56 Prayer of Preparation: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’

Kyrie eleison

4

The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Absolution (Celebrant) Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of the Day Everliving God, your Son, Jesus Christ, gave himself as living bread for the life of the world: give us such a knowledge of his presence that we may be strengthened and sustained by his risen life to serve you continually; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in unity with the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV) First Reading: 1 Kings 2.10-12; 3.3-14 2 10 Then David slept with his ancestors, and was buried in the city of David. 11 The time that David reigned over Israel was forty years; he reigned for seven years in Hebron, and thirty-three years in Jerusalem. 12 So Solomon sat on the throne of his father David; and his kingdom was firmly established. 3 3 Solomon loved the Lord , walking in the statutes of his father David; only, he sacrificed and offered incense at the high places. 4 The king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, for that was the principal high place; Solomon used to offer a thousand burntofferings on that altar. 5 At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, ‘Ask what I should give you.’ 6 And Solomon said, ‘You have shown great and steadfast love to your servant my father David, because he walked before you in faithfulness, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart towards you; and you have kept for him this great and steadfast love, and have given him a son to sit on his throne today. 7 And now, O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David, although I am only a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in. 8 And your servant is in the midst of the people whom you have chosen, a great people, so numerous they cannot be numbered or counted. 9 Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, able to discern between good and evil; for who can govern this your great people?’ 10 It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this. 11 God said to him, ‘Because you have 7

asked this, and have not asked for yourself long life or riches, or for the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern what is right, 12 I now do according to your word. Indeed I give you a wise and discerning mind; no one like you has been before you and no one like you shall arise after you. 13 I give you also what you have not asked, both riches and honour all your life; no other king shall compare with you. 14 If you will walk in my ways, keeping my statutes and my commandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your life.’ Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD

Psalm: 111 – Congregation to sing with choir

O praise the Lord. I will praise the Lord with my | whole | heart: in the company of the upright and a|mong the | congre|gation. 2 The works of the | Lord are | great: and studied by | all who | take de|light in them. 1

His deeds are ma|jestic · and | glorious: and his | righteous· ness | stands for | ever. 4 His marvellous acts have won him a name to | be re|membered: the | Lord is | gracious · and | merciful. 3

He gives food to | those that | fear him: he re|members · his | covenant · for | ever. 6 He showed his people the | power · of his | acts: in giving them the | herit· age | of the | heathen. 5

8

The works of his hands are | faithful · and | just: and | all · his com|mandments · are | sure; 8 They stand firm for | ever · and | ever: they are done in | faithful· ness | and in | truth. 7

He sent redemption to his people, he ordained his | covenant · for | ever: holy is his name and | worthy | to be | feared. 10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and of good understanding are those that | keep· his com|mandments: his | praise· shall en|dure for | ever. 9

Glory be to the Father, and | to the | Son: and | to the | Holy | Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and | ever | shall be: world without | end. | A|men. Second Reading: Ephesians 5.11-21 Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to mention what such people do secretly; 13 but everything exposed by the light becomes visible, 14 for everything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, ‘Sleeper, awake! Rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.’ 15 Be careful then how you live, not as unwise people but as wise, 16 making the most of the time, because the days are evil. 17 So do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, 19 as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, 20 giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 21 Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ. 11

Response: Hear the word of the Lord, 9

THANKS BE TO GOD Gradual Hymn: Sweet Sacrament divine NEH 307

1. Sweet Sacrament divine, hid in thine earthly home; lo! round thy lowly shrine, with suppliant hearts we come; Jesu, to thee our voice we raise In songs of love and heartfelt praise sweet Sacrament divine. 2. Sweet Sacrament of peace, Dear home for every heart, Where restless yearnings cease And sorrows all depart; There in thine ear all trustfully We tell our tale of misery: Sweet Sacrament of peace.

3. Sweet Sacrament of rest, Ark from the ocean’s roar, Within thy shelter blest Soon may we reach the shore; Save us, for still the tempest raves, Save, lest we sink beneath the waves: Sweet Sacrament of rest. 4. Sweet Sacrament divine, Earth’s light and jubilee, In thy far depths doth shine The Godhead’s majesty; Sweet light, so shine on us, we pray That earthly joys may fade away: Sweet Sacrament divine.

WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET OUR LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD. ALLELUIA - Sung by ALL

The Lord be with you AND ALSO WITH YOU The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint John chapter 6 beginning at the 51st verse.

I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live for ever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.’ 52 The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, ‘How can this man give us his flesh to eat?’ 53 So Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; 55 for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink.56 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. 57 Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live for ever.’ 51

Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

SERMON - (copy of sermon available at back of church and on web) 11

The Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

1. Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord! Unnumbered blessings, give my spirit voice; tender to me the promise of his word; in God my Saviour shall my heart rejoice. 2. Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his might! Powers and dominions lay their glory by. Proud hearts and stubborn wills are put to flight, the hungry fed, the humble lifted high. 4. Trinity College Theological School Inaugural Archbishop’s Dinner Wednesday 26 August 2015 6:30 pm, Trinity College Dining Hall Faith in our Future Fund Trinity College Theological School provides theological training for candidates for ordination and lay ministers. It follows the tradition of the Anglo-Catholic theology. The College has recently transformed into a full teaching college under the umbrella of the University of Divinity. At present there is an urgent need to support and strengthen the resources of the School so it continues to effectively teach and minister to ordination candidates and other theological students. Trinity is making a concerted effort this year to increase support for its theological programs. The College Board has committed an additional $100,000 a year for the next three years, to see the new and expanded staffing arrangements bedded-down, and the Advancement Office is marshalling its significant resources to substantially increase support for the School. This Dinner is a key element in this strategy. The Archbishop has added his name to the Dinner and is individually inviting people to attend. The dinner is a unique opportunity to contribute to the future development of our Diocese. Trinity needs to flourish if the rich and generous style of Anglicanism that has characterised Melbourne is to be maintained into the future. There are a number of parishes that are supporting this effort to sustain the Theological School. Please fill in form at the back of church if you wish to attend. Jesus Rediscovered, our Study for Winter continues TODAY, at 12 Noon in the Parish Hall and 2pm on Wednesday in the Vicarage. The Vicar and Fr Robert Holland will be leading the studies. Studies are available at the back of the Church, price $10.
