Dear Parishioners, God offers his people a deeply rich and abundant life, but we can easily miss it. What is the bread of life which Jesus offers? It is first of all the life of God himself – life which sustains us not only now, but also in the age to come for eternal life. God sustained the Israelites in the wilderness with manna from heaven. This bread foreshadowed the true heavenly bread which Jesus would offer his followers. St Augustine Bishop of Hippo, (354-430 AD) writing on eternal life: "Our wish, you see, is to attain to eternal life. We wish to reach the place where nobody dies, but if possible we do not want to get there via death. We would like to be whisked away there while we are still alive and see our bodies changed, while we are alive, into that spiritual form into which they are to be changed when we rise again. Who wouldn't like that? Isn't it what everybody wants? But while that is what you want, you are told, Quit. Remember what you have sung in the psalm: 'A lodger am I on earth.' If you are a lodger, you are staying in someone else's house; if you are staying in someone else's house, you quit when the landlord bids you. And the landlord is bound to tell you to quit sooner or later, and he has not guaranteed you a long stay. After all, he did not sign a contract with you. Seeing that you are lodging with him for nothing, you quit when he tells you to. THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV) First Reading: 2 Samuel 18.5-9, 14, 31-33 The king gave orders to Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying, ‘Deal gently for my sake with the young man Absalom.’ And all the people heard when the king gave orders to all the commanders concerning Absalom. 6 So the army went out into the field against Israel; and the battle was fought in the forest of Ephraim. 7 The men of Israel were defeated there by the servants of David, and the slaughter there was great on that day, twenty thousand men. 8 The battle spread over the face of all the country; and the forest claimed more victims that day than the sword. 9 Absalom happened to meet the servants of David. Absalom was riding on his mule, and the mule went under the thick branches of a great oak. Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. 41 Then the Jews began to complain about him because he said, ‘I am the bread that came down from heaven.’ 42 They were saying, ‘Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? The Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. Jesus said: A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you. John 13.34 [Let us pray] We do not presume to come to your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen. The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Trinity College Theological School Inaugural Archbishop’s Dinner Wednesday 26 August 2015 6:30 pm, Trinity College Dining Hall Faith in our Future Fund Trinity College Theological School provides theological training for candidates for ordination and lay ministers. It follows the tradition of the Anglo-Catholic theology. The College has recently transformed into a full teaching college under the umbrella of the University of Divinity. At present there is an urgent need to support and strengthen the resources of the School so it continues to effectively teach and minister to ordination candidates and other theological students. Trinity is making a concerted effort this year to increase support for its theological programs. The College Board has committed an additional $100,000 a year for the next three years, to see the new and expanded staffing arrangements bedded-down, and the Advancement Office is marshalling its significant resources to substantially increase support for the School. This Dinner is a key element in this strategy. The aim is to gather people across the Diocese committed to the historic breadth of Anglicanism – to a Church which is generous and open – grounded in liturgy, scripture and reason. The success of the Dinner relies on identifying such individuals. Your support here is critical. All of us know our parishes can only do so much. There are individuals, however, who are in a position to help more, without affecting their support for local ministry. They are prepared to invest in the future of our church, understanding that Trinity is critical to producing a steady stream of well-formed candidates for Ordination. Importantly, the Archbishop is committed to see Trinity flourish as well, and is prepared to use his good offices to that effect. Not only has he added his name to the Dinner but is individually inviting people to attend, as parishes are able to identify people to be invited. I believe the Archbishop’s Dinner is a unique opportunity to contribute to the future development of our Diocese. Trinity needs to flourish if the rich and generous style of Anglicanism that has characterised Melbourne is to be maintained into the future. I look forward to your support. There are a number of parishes that are supporting this effort to sustain the Theological School. If anyone is willing join a table for the dinner please make a booking as indicated on the Invitation details.
