Dear Parishioners, There are basically two types of hunger - physical and spiritual. Only the Lord Jesus can ultimately satisfy the hunger in our heart - the hunger for truth, life, and love. Jesus alone can satisfy our hunger for truth - because in him alone is the Truth which is found in God. Jesus alone can satisfy our hunger for life because he alone can give us abundant life - the supernatural life of God which transforms us now and lasts forever. Jesus alone can satisfy our deepest hunger for love - the love of God that knows no end, that never fails nor forsakes us, that outlasts sin and death.

St. Augustine Bishop of Hippo in North Africa (c. 354 - 430 AD) had this to say about the Eucharist: "That Bread which you see on the altar, having been sanctified by the word of God is the body of Christ. That chalice, or rather, what is in that chalice, having been sanctified by the word of God, is the blood of Christ. Second Reading: Ephesians 4:1-16 4 I urge you, then—I who am a prisoner because I serve the Lord: live a life that measures up to the standard God set when he called you. 2 Be always humble, gentle, and patient. Show your love by being tolerant with one another. 3 Do your best to preserve the unity which the Spirit gives by means of the peace that binds you together. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as there is one hope to which God has called you. 5 There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 there is one God and Father of all people, who is Lord of all, works through all, and is in all.

7 Each one of us has received a special gift in proportion to what Christ has given. 8 As the scripture says, “When he went up to the very heights, he took many captives with him; he gave gifts to people.”

9 Now, what does “he went up” mean? It means that first he came down to the lowest depths of the earth.[a] 10 So the one who came down is the same one who went up, above and beyond the heavens, to fill the whole universe with his presence. 11 It was he who “gave gifts to people”; he appointed some to be apostles, others to be prophets, others to be evangelists, others to be pastors and teachers. 12 He did this to prepare all God's people for the work of Christian service, in order to build up the body of Christ. 13 And so we shall all come together to that oneness in our faith and in our knowledge of the Son of God; we shall become mature people, reaching to the very height of Christ's full stature. 14 Then we shall no longer be children, carried by the waves and blown about by every shifting wind of the teaching of deceitful people, who lead others into error by the tricks they invent. 15 Instead, by speaking the truth in a spirit of love, we must grow up in every way to Christ, who is the head. 16 Under his control all the different parts of the body fit together, and the whole body is held together by every joint with which it is provided. So when each separate part works as it should, the whole body grows and builds itself up through love.

THE BAPTISM When Jesus had risen from the dead, he commanded his followers to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. We have come together today in obedience to that command. In baptism, we are joined to Christ, and made members of his Church.

Baptism of children is a celebration of new life and the promise of eternal life, and an acknowledgement of their need for care and protection.

While we focus on the grace of God given to those who are baptized, we also acknowledge that spiritual growth depends on parents and godparents, and the wider circle of family and friends, who are the examples and influence that mould a child’s character. In this service of baptism we bring Lachlan into God’s presence that he may be enfolded in the grace of the Holy Spirit.

Parents and Godparents who bring children for baptism must express their own trust and commitment to the promises of God, and their intention to bring up the children in the faith and practice of the Church.

The Baptism party gathers around the font.

The parents and godparents are asked the questions: Q/ Before God and this congregation, you must affirm your belief in God and so I ask: Do you Believe in God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit?

A/ I do.

Q/ Will you accept the responsibilities placed upon you in bringing Lachlan for baptism?

A/ I will.

Q/ By your prayers and example, by your friendship and love, will you encourage him in the life and faith of the Christian community?

A/ I will.

Q/ As your life will be an example to Lachlan, will you turn away from evil thoughts, words and actions?

A/ I will.

Q/ Will you affirm Christian values, especially those of honesty, compassion and mercy?

A/ I will.

Prayers and Blessing of the water [Let us pray:] Grant, merciful God, that Lachlan may be so united with Christ in baptism that your new nature may be raised up in him where the fruit of your Spirit may grow and flourish. Give to family and friends the desire to share what you have revealed in your Holy Gospel.

We give you thanks that at the beginning of creation your Holy Spirit moved upon the waters to bring forth light and life. With water you cleanse and replenish the earth; and through the waters of the Red Sea you led your people by Moses out of slavery into freedom, and brought them through the river Jordan into the land of promise. We give you thanks for your Son, Jesus Christ: for his baptism by John, for his anointing in the Holy Spirit, and that through the deep waters of death Jesus delivered us from our sins and was raised to new life in triumph. We give you thanks for the grace of the Holy Spirit who leads us to your kingdom.

And now we give you thanks that you have called Lachlan to new birth in your Church through the waters of baptism. + Pour out your Holy Spirit in blessing and sanctify this water so that all who are baptized may be made one with Christ in his death and resurrection, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN.

An affirmation of faith Priest: I ask the congregation to join with the parents and godparents in affirming the faith of the church.

Do you believe in God the Father?

A/: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

Do you believe in God the Son? A/: I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?

A/: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. AMEN. 17

The Baptism Priest: Lachlan Gregory I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, AMEN. I sign you with the sign of the cross to show that you are marked as Christ’s own forever.

(Oil that has been blessed by a bishop is used in anointing to symbolize being chosen in God, as were the priests and prophets of the Old Testament, and the New Testament understanding that we are all anointed in the Spirit through belief in Christ.)

Live as a disciple of Christ; fight the good fight, finish the race, keep the faith.

ALL: Confess Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, look for his coming in glory.

Priest: God has called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.

ALL: Shine as a light in the world to the glory of God the Father.

Priest: God has called you into his church.

ALL: We therefore receive and welcome you as a member with us of the body of Christ, as a child of the one heavenly Father, and as an inheritor of the kingdom of God. Prayers for the child, parents and godparents Merciful God, in your infinite love you have made a new covenant with us in Jesus Christ, promising to be our God and the God of our children.

Enable all who are baptized in your name to live as your faithful people.

Fulfil your promises for Lachlan, we pray, and grant that he may grow in your faith and service.

We pray for Rachel and Christopher, that in your Spirit of wisdom, their family may grow in your love, and their home share in the joy of your eternal kingdom.

And we pray for Lachlan’s godparents, Megan and Michael; enable them to share with their godson what you have revealed to us of your love in your holy gospel. We ask this in the name of our Saviour Jesus Christ, AMEN.

Trinity College Theological School Inaugural Archbishop’s Dinner Wednesday 26 August 2015 6:30 pm, Trinity College Dining Hall Faith in our Future Fund Trinity College Theological School provides theological training for candidates for ordination and lay ministers. It follows the tradition of the Anglo-Catholic theology. The College has recently transformed into a full teaching college under the umbrella of the University of Divinity. At present there is an urgent need to support and strengthen the resources of the School so it continues to effectively teach and minister to ordination candidates and other theological students.

Trinity is making a concerted effort this year to increase support for its theological programs. The College Board has committed an additional $100,000 a year for the next three years, to see the new and expanded staffing arrangements bedded-down, and the Advancement Office is marshalling its significant resources to substantially increase support for the School.

This Dinner is a key element in this strategy. The aim is to gather people across the Diocese committed to the historic breadth of Anglicanism – to a Church which is generous and open – grounded in liturgy, scripture and reason.

The success of the Dinner relies on identifying such individuals. Your support here is critical. All of us know our parishes can only do so much. There are individuals, however, who are in a position to help more, without affecting their support for local ministry. They are prepared to invest in the future of our church, understanding that Trinity is critical to producing a steady stream of well-formed candidates for Ordination.

Importantly, the Archbishop is committed to see Trinity flourish as well, and is prepared to use his good offices to that effect. Not only has he added his name to the Dinner but is individually inviting people to attend, as parishes are able to identify people to be invited.

I believe the Archbishop’s Dinner is a unique opportunity to contribute to the future development of our Diocese. Trinity needs to flourish if the rich and generous style of Anglicanism that has characterised Melbourne is to be maintained into the future. I look forward to your support.

There are a number of parishes that are supporting this effort to sustain the Theological School. If anyone is willing join a table for the dinner please make a booking as indicated on the Invitation details.
