Dear Parishioners, As I mentioned last week we used incense at the 10am service after we were unsuccessful on Holy Trinity Sunday. There are some extra points of information I should like to provide you with as well as what I wrote at length in the pew sheet for Holy Trinity Sunday in the light of some conversations and communications since then. Firstly the use of incense was not solely my own initiative, although under the statutes of the Church, details of ceremonial are the sole authority of the Vicar. I have chosen to forgo my authority and have consulted on this matter, knowing how the use of incense can cause misunderstanding and dispute. Since arriving as your Vicar I have been contacted by a significant number of long-time parishioners expressing a desire for the use of incense on a more regular basis particularly at the 10am service. Arising out of this I contacted the Parish Wardens and spoke to the Parish Council who all agreed to a trial use of incense at the 10am service. Therefore please be advised that there will be a trial use of incense on the 1st and 3rd Sundays at 10am (subject to advised in advance variation) until the Annual Meeting in November where as Chairman I will initiate a secret ballot amongst electors as to whether they want to proceed with the use of incense at the 10am service. As an asthmatic myself I am acutely aware of the effects of smoke on the respiratory system. Through my own experience and my wife Jane who is an asthmatic also (who has been hospitalised on a number of occasions) and many other personal experiences we have not found incense to be a cause of allergic reactions or to aggravate asthma. In fact the incense which is sourced and imported from Prinknash Abbey in England has no health advisory/warning applied by the European Community or the Australian Government. There are no proven studies to say that incense harms oneâ€™s health any more than the unseen fumes which come off candles lit which we have many- if there were you can imagine that in our Occupational Health and Safety world we live in it would be quickly banned. Over the years I have heard the same arguments about incense which seem to be focussed on anything from health concerns as mentioned above to arguments around a lack of process by the Vicar and dislike of the new to the fear of Popery. It would be very easy for all concerned to threaten to withdraw or leave on the basis that we did not like something that was decided or trialled or happens in our Church. Ultimately the Parish will decide and I hope we are all able to go along with a view democratically decided which may be different to ours or others. If a 2

majority decide in favour or against through the ballot I will seek ways that those who find it difficult to accept the decision will be accommodated. Peter Chrysologous (400-450 AD) Bishop of Ravenna, reflects on our mustard seed Gospel this morning: “It is up to us to sow this mustard seed in our minds and let it grow within us into a great tree of understanding reaching up to heaven and elevating all our faculties; then it will spread out branches of knowledge, the pungent savour of its fruit will make our mouths burn, its fiery kernel will kindle a blaze within us inflaming our hearts, and the taste of it will dispel our unenlightened repugnance. Yes, it is true: a mustard seed is indeed an image of the kingdom of God. Christ is the kingdom of heaven. Sown like a mustard seed in the garden of the virgin’s womb, he grew up into the tree of the cross whose branches stretch across the world. Crushed in the mortar of the passion, its fruit has produced seasoning enough for the flavouring and preservation of every living creature with which it comes in contact. As long as a mustard seed remains intact, its properties lie dormant; but when it is crushed they are exceedingly evident. So it was with Christ; he chose to have his body crushed, because he would not have his power concealed…. Christ became all things in order to restore all of us in himself. The man Christ received the mustard seed which represents the kingdom of God; as man he received it, though as God he had always possessed it. He sowed it in his garden, that is in his bride, the Church. The Church is a garden extending over the whole world, tilled by the plough of the gospel, fenced in by stakes of doctrine and discipline, cleared of every harmful weed by the labour of the apostles, fragrant and lovely with perennial flowers: virgins’ lilies and martyrs’ roses set amid the pleasant verdure of all who bear witness to Christ and the tender plants of all who have faith in him. Such then is the mustard seed which Christ sowed in his garden. When he promised a kingdom to the patriarchs, the seed took root in them; with the prophets it sprang up; with the apostles it grew tall; in the Church it became a great tree putting forth innumerable branches laden with gifts. And now you too must take the wings of the psalmist’s dove, gleaming gold in the rays of divine sunlight, and fly to rest for ever among those sturdy, fruitful branches. No snares are set to trap you there; fly off, then, with confidence and dwell securely in its shelter.” (Selected Sermons Volume 2 The Fathers of the Church by W. Palardy 2004). We stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel as a sign of respect as we greet our Lord who is present in His Holy Word. The Lord be with you AND ALSO WITH YOU The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Mark chapter 4 beginning at the 26th verse. GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

SERMON - (copy of sermon available at back of church and on web) The Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Come let us take this holy sacrament of the body and blood of Christ in remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The Choir sings: â€œHere, O My Lordâ€?, Viner.

Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind.
