Dear Parishioners, Today for the first time in quite a while I suspect, we are going to use incense at the 10am service. You may ask why are we using it and why have we used it before at Holy Trinity? Is it to make the place smell nice, or is it just to encourage some people to cough at the mere sight of it? Actually, the use of incense is an expression of prayer, and it is in fact very biblical. There is a recipe for incense in Exodus (30:34-36), and incense is associated with divinity and reserved for God (Ex: 30:37-38). In the Bible, ritual incensing of objects, people and places was for their purification or for making the object or person holy and worthy of God. So the purpose of incensing and the symbolic value of the smoke is that of prayer, blessing, purification, and sanctification. We read in Holy Scripture: From the farthest east to the farthest west, my name is honoured among the nations and everywhere a sacrifice of incense is offered to my name, and a pure offering too, since my name is honoured among the nations. (Malachi 1:11) Let my prayer rise before you like incense O Lord. (Psalm 141) Not only does the smoke symbolise the prayers of the faithful drifting up to heaven, incense actually creates the ambience of heaven. The Book of Revelation describes the heavenly worship as follows: “And another angel came and stood at the altar with a golden censer; and he was given much incense to mingle with the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar before the throne; and the smoke of the incense rose with the prayers of the saints from the hand of the angel before God. (Rev 8:3-4). Hence, incense connects us to God’s altar in heaven and allows us to utilise all of our senses in our prayer. We do not know exactly when the use of incense was introduced into the Eucharist or other liturgical rites. At the time of the early Church, the Jews continued to use incense in their own Temple rituals, so it would be safe to conclude that the Christians would have adapted its usage for their own rituals. In the liturgies of Ss. James and Mark, which in their present form originate in the fifth century, the use of incense is mentioned. A ritual of the seventh century marks it usage in the procession of a Bishop to the altar and on Good 2

Friday. Moreover, in the Eucharist, an incensation at the Gospel appears very early; at the offertory, in the 11th century; and at the Introit, in the 12th century. Incense was also used at the Benedictus and Magnificat during Lauds and Vespers about the 13th century. Gradually, its usage was extended to the incensing of the celebrant and assisting clergy. Incense may be used during the entrance procession; at the beginning of the Eucharist, to incense the altar; at the procession and proclamation of the Gospel; at the offertory, to incense the offerings, altar, priest and people; and at the elevation of the Host and chalice after the consecration. I hope the above information assists you in understanding why we will be using incense at Holy Trinity and I hope you will appreciate and enjoy its aroma and what it means, all adding to our beautiful worship. In our Gospel this morning Jesus' conversation with Nicodemus went to the very heart of the Mosaic law - how can one get right with God and enter God's kingdom? Jesus' answer was brief, confronting and startling: "Unless one is born anew, he cannot see God." Jesus said that this rebirth was necessary if one was to enter God's kingdom. The new birth Jesus speaks of is a spiritual birth to a new life and experiential relationship with God as his sons and daughters. This new birth is made possible when one is baptised into Christ and receives the gift of the Holy Spirit. God wants to renew all his people in the gift of new life in his Holy Spirit. This new life brings us into God's kingdom and heavenly way of life. What is God's kingdom? God's kingdom is that society of men and women who acknowledge God firstly as their Lord and who live according to his will on earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:10). To be reborn is to enter that society in which God is honoured and obeyed, to live as citizens of heaven and members of God's family - his sons and daughters, and to enter into possession of that life which comes from God himself, a never-ending life of love, peace, joy, and freedom from sin and the fear of death. Yours in Christ, Fr Robert

O blessed Trinity, in whom we know the Maker of all things, seen and unseen, the Saviour of all, both near and far: by your Spirit enable us so to worship your divine majesty, that with all the company of heaven we may magnify your glorious name, saying, Holy, holy, holy. Glory to you, O Lord most high.

First Reading: Isaiah 6.1-8 1

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. 2 Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. 3 And one called to another and said: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory.’ 4 The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. 5 And I said: ‘Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!’ 6 Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. 7 The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: ‘Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out.’ 8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I; send me!’

1 ASCRIBE unto the LORD, | O ye | mighty: ascribe unto the | LORD | worship and | strength. 2 Ascribe unto the LORD the honour due | unto his | Name: worship the | LORD with | holy | worship. 3 The voice of the LORD is up|on the | waters: it is the glorious | God that | maketh the | thunder. 4 It is the LORD that ruleth the sea, the voice of the LORD is mighty in | oper|ation: the voice of the LORD | is a | glorious | voice. 5 The voice of the LORD | breaketh the | cedar-trees: yea the LORD | breaketh the | cedars of | Lebanon. 6 He maketh them also to skip | like a | calf: Lebanon also and Sirion | like a | young | unicorn. 7 The voice of the LORD divideth the flames of fire, the voice of the LORD | shaketh the | wilderness: yea the LORD | shaketh the | wilderness of | Kadesh. 8 The voice of the LORD maketh the hinds to bring forth young, and strippeth | bare the | forests: in his temple doth | every thing | speak of his | honour.

9 The LORD sitteth a|bove the | water-flood: and the LORD re|maineth a | King for | ever. 10 The LORD shall give strength | unto his | people: the LORD shall give his | people the | blessing of | peace. Glory be to the Father, and | to the | Son: and | to the | Holy | Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and | ever | shall be: world without | end. | A|men.

Second Reading: Romans 8.12-17 12

So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— 13 for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. 15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’ 16 it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

Gradual Hymn: Morning glory, starlit sky TiS 174

1. Morning glory, starlit sky, soaring music, scholars’ truth, flight of swallows, autumn leaves, memory’s treasure, grace of youth:

4. Drained is love in making full, bound in setting others free, poor in making many rich, weak in giving power to be.

2. open are the gifts of God, gifts of love to mind and sense; hidden is love’s agony, love’s endeavour, love’s expense.

5. Therefore he who shows us God helpless hangs upon the tree; and the nails and crown of thorns tell of what God’s love must be.

3. Love that gives, gives ever more, gives with zeal, with eager hands, spares not, keeps not, all outpours, ventures all, it all expends.

6. Here is God: no monarch he, throned in easy state to reign; here is God, whose arms of love, aching, spent, the world sustain. William Hubert Vanstone 1923– Music © A. Wilson

Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. 2 He came to Jesus by night and said to him, ‘Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God.’ 3 Jesus answered him, ‘Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above.’ 4 Nicodemus said to him, ‘How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother’s womb and be born?’ 5 Jesus answered, ‘Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. 6 What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not be astonished that I said to you, “You must be born from above.” 8 The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.’ 9 Nicodemus said to him, ‘How can these things be?’ 10 Jesus answered him, ‘Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things? 11 ‘Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. 12 If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. 14 And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. 16 ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. 17 ‘Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

TiS 133

1. O worship the King all-glorious above, O gratefully sing his power and his love: our shield and defender, the ancient of days, pavilioned in splendour, and girded with praise.

4. Your bountiful care what tongue can recite? It breathes in the air, it shines in the light, it streams from the hills, it descends to the plain, and sweetly distils in the dew and the rain.

2. O tell of his might, O sing of his grace, whose robe is the light, whose canopy space; his chariots of wrath the deep thunder-clouds form, and dark is his path on the wings of the storm.

5. Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail, in you do we trust, nor find you to fail: your mercies how tender, how firm to the end, our maker, defender, redeemer and friend.

3. The earth with its store of wonders untold, Almighty, your power has founded of old, established it fast by a changeless decree, and round it has cast, like a mantle, the sea.

6. O measureless might, ineffable love, while angels delight to hymn you above, the humbler creation, though faltering their praise, with true adoration shall sing all their days. Robert Grant 1779–1838 alt. based on Psalm 104 and Psalm 18

Final Hymn: I, the Lord of sea and sky TiS 658 1. I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard my people cry. All who dwell in dark and sin my hand will save. I who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright. Who will bear my light to them? Whom shall I send? Here I am, Lord; is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night; I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart.

2. I, the Lord of snow and rain, I have borne my people’s pain; I have wept for love of them. They turn away. I will break their hearts of stone, give them hearts for love alone. I will speak my word to them. Whom shall I send? Here I am, Lord... 3. I, the Lord of wind and flame, I will tend the poor and lame, I will set a feast for them. My hand will save. Finest bread I will provide till their hearts are satisfied. I will give my life to them. Whom shall I send? Here I am, Lord... Daniel L. Schutte 1947– suggested by Isaiah 6 Words and music by permission Oregon Catholic Press
