Dear Parishioners, This Sunday we are going to begin using a gong to mark the most significant part of the Eucharist at the Words of Institution at the 10am service. The striking of the gong at the consecration is to create a joyful noise to the Lord as a way to give thanks for the Eucharist. It is also to focus the attention of those attending that an important event is taking place on the altar, i.e. the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist which is usually matched with the ringing of the main church bell to let the whole community outside the church building know what is happening. In some Roman Catholic, Lutheran and Anglican churches a bell or gong is used to reflect the significance they place upon the consecration at the Eucharist. This elevated understanding of the Eucharist has been influenced by the teaching of the Early Church Fathers including Irenaeus Bishop of Lyon (early 2nd Century AD) and much later such luminaries as John Calvin, Martin Luther and even later Archbishop William Temple (Canterbury and York). Jesus prayed in our Gospel this morning that his disciples would be sanctiďŹ ed and consecrated in God's truth and holiness. The scriptural word for consecration comes from the same Hebrew word which means holy or set apart for God. We usually use this term from our Book of Common Prayer 1662 referring speciďŹ cally to the Words of Institution in the Eucharist, where the priest recites the words (anamnesis) of Jesus at the Last Supper. This word consecration also means to be equipped with the qualities of mind and heart and character for such a task or service. Just as Jesus was called by the Father to serve in holiness and truth, so we, too, are called and equipped for the task of serving God in the world as his ambassadors. If we receive human testimony, the testimony of God is greater; for this is the testimony of God that he has testified to his Son. 10 Those who believe in the Son of God have the testimony in their hearts. ‘I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world.
