PROCESSION
The president greets the people Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. AND ALSO WITH YOU.
Introduction The president introduces the celebration using these words: Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, during Lent we have been preparing by works of love and self-sacrifice for the celebration of our Lord’s death and resurrection. Today we come together to being this solemn celebration in union with the Church throughout the world. Christ enters his own city to complete his work as our Saviour, to suffer, to die, and to rise again. Let us go with him in faith and love, so that, united with him in his sufferings, we may share his risen life.
The people hold up palms or branches while this prayer is said by the president: God our Saviour, whose Son Jesus Christ entered Jerusalem as Messiah to suffer and to die; let these palms be for us signs of his victory and grant that we who bear them in his name may ever hail him as our King, and follow him in the way that leads to eternal life; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. AMEN

The Palm Gospel Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark: (11:1-11) GLORY TO YOU, O LORD. When they were approaching Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples2and said to them, “Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately as you enter it, you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden; untie it and bring it. 3If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ just say this, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here immediately.’” 4They went away and found a colt tied near a door, outside in the street. As they were untying it, 5some of the bystanders said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” 6They told them what Jesus had said; and they allowed them to take it. 7Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it; and he sat on it.8Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut in the fields. 9Then those who went ahead and those who followed were shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! 10 Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David! Hosanna in the highest heaven!” 11
Then he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple; and when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.
This is the Gospel of the Lord. PRAISE TO YOU, O CHRIST.
4
The Procession: Let us go forth, praising Jesus our Messiah. During the procession all hold palms or branches as the hymn is sung: Hymn: All glory, laud and honour
All glory, laud and honour to thee, Redeemer, King, to whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring.
3. The people of the Hebrews with palms before thee went: our praise and pray’r and anthems before thee we present.
1. Thou art the king of Israel thou David’s royal son, who in the Lord’s name comest, the king and blessèd one.
4. To thee before thy passion they sang their hymns of praise: to thee now high exalted our melody we raise.
2. The company of angels are praising thee on high, and mortal men and all things created make reply.
5. Thou didst accept their praises: accept the pray’rs we bring, who in all good delightest, thou good and gracious king.
5
Greeting: The Lord be with you. AND ALSO WITH YOU.
(see Ruth 2:4)
Sentence: At the name of Jesus, every knee shall bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2.10-11 Prayer of Preparation: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Kyrie eleison (Dudman)
6
The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Absolution
{Celebrant}
Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Prayer of the Day Everlasting God, in your tender love for the human race you sent your Son to take our nature, and to suffer death upon the cross: in your mercy enable us to share in his obedience to your will and in the glorious victory of his resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD
First Reading: Isaiah 50:4-9 4
The Lord God has given me the tongue of a teacher, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. Morning by morning he wakens-- wakens my ear to listen as those who are taught. 5 The Lord God has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I did not turn backward. 6 I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I did not hide my face from insult and spitting. 7 The Lord God helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; 8 he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who are my adversaries? Let them confront me. 9 It is the Lord God who helps me; who will declare me guilty? All of them will wear out like a garment; the moth will eat them up. Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD

Psalm: 31:9-18
9
Thou hast not shut me up into the | hand of the | enemy: but hast set my | feet in a | large | room. 10 Have mercy upon me, O LORD, for | I am in | trouble: and mine eye is consumed for very heaviness; yea my | soul | and my | body. 11
For my life is waxen | old with | heaviness: and my | years | with | mourning. 12 My strength faileth me because of | mine in|iquity: and my | bones | are con|sumed. 13
I became a reproach among all mine enemies, but especially a|mong my | neighbours: and they of mine acquaintance were afraid of me, and they that did see me without con|veyed them|selves | from me. 14 I am clean forgotten, as a dead man | out of | mind: I am become | like a | broken | vessel. 15
For I have heard the blasphemy | of the | multitude: and fear is on every side, while they conspire together against me, and take their counsel to | take a|way my | life. 16 But my hope hath been in | thee, O | LORD: I have said | Thou art | my | God. 17
My time is in thy hand, deliver me from the | hand of mine | enemies: and from | them that | persecute | me. 18 Shew thy servant the | light of thy | countenance: and save me | for thy | mercy's | sake.
9
Second Reading: Philippians 2:5-11 5
Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, 7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, 8 he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death-- even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD

Gradual Hymn: Ride on, ride on in majesty TiS 348
1. Ride on, ride on in majesty; hark, all the tribes hosanna cry! O Saviour, meek, pursue your road with palms and scattered garments strowed. 2. Ride on, ride on in majesty, in lowly pomp ride on to die; O Christ, your triumphs now begin o’er captive death and conquered sin.
4. Ride on, ride on in majesty; your last and fiercest strife is nigh; the Father on his sapphire throne awaits his own anointed Son. 5. Ride on, ride on in majesty, in lowly pomp ride on to die; bow your meek head to mortal pain, then take, O God, your power and reign!
3. Ride on, ride on in majesty; the wingèd squadrons of the sky look down with sad and wondering eyes to see the approaching sacrifice.

We stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel as a sign of respect as we greet our Lord who is present in His Holy Word. The Lord be with you AND ALSO WITH YOU

As soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. They bound Jesus, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate. 2 Pilate asked him, ‘Are you the King of the Jews?’ He answered him, ‘You say so.’ 3 Then the chief priests accused him of many things. 4 Pilate asked him again, ‘Have you no answer? See how many charges they bring against you.’ 5 But Jesus made no further reply, so that Pilate was amazed. 6 Now at the festival he used to release a prisoner for them, anyone for whom they asked. 7 Now a man called Barabbas was in prison with the rebels who had committed murder during the insurrection. 8 So the crowd came and began to ask Pilate to do for them according to his custom. 9 Then he answered them, ‘Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?’ 10 For he realized that it was out of jealousy that the chief priests had handed him over. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas for them instead. 12 Pilate spoke to them again, ‘Then what do you wish me to do with the man you call the King of the Jews?’ 13 They shouted back, ‘Crucify him!’ 14 Pilate asked them, ‘Why, what evil has he done?’ But they shouted all the more, ‘Crucify him!’ 15 So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas for them; and after flogging Jesus, he handed him over to be crucified. 16 Then the soldiers led him into the courtyard of the palace (that is, the governor’s headquarters); and they called together the whole cohort. 17 And they clothed him in a purple cloak; and after twisting some thorns into a crown, they put it on him. 18 And they began saluting him, ‘Hail, King of the Jews!’ 19 They struck his head with a reed, spat upon him, and knelt down in homage to him. 20 After mocking him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him. 21 They compelled a passer-by, who was coming in from the country, to carry his cross; it was Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus. 22 Then they brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means the place of a skull). 23 And they 12
offered him wine mixed with myrrh; but he did not take it. 24 And they crucified him, and divided his clothes among them, casting lots to decide what each should take. 25 It was nine o’clock in the morning when they crucified him. 26 The inscription of the charge against him read, ‘The King of the Jews.’ 27 And with him they crucified two bandits, one on his right and one on his left. 29 Those who passed by derided him, shaking their heads and saying, ‘Aha! You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days, 30 save yourself, and come down from the cross!’ 31 In the same way the chief priests, along with the scribes, were also mocking him among themselves and saying, ‘He saved others; he cannot save himself. 32 Let the Messiah, the King of Israel, come down from the cross now, so that we may see and believe.’ Those who were crucified with him also taunted him. 33 When it was noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. 34 At three o’clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice, ‘Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?’ which means, ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’ 35 When some of the bystanders heard it, they said, ‘Listen, he is calling for Elijah.’ 36 And someone ran, filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to him to drink, saying, ‘Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.’ 37 Then Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last. 38 And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. 39 Now when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, ‘Truly this man was God’s Son!’

THE BAPTISM When Jesus had risen from the dead, he commanded his followers to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. We have come together today in obedience to that command. In baptism, we are joined to Christ, and made members of his Church. Baptism of children is a celebration of new life and the promise of eternal life, and an acknowledgement of their need for care and protection. While we focus on the grace of God given to those who are baptized, we also acknowledge that spiritual growth depends on parents and godparents, and the wider circle of family and friends, who are the examples and influence that mould a child’s character. In this service of baptism we bring Jack and Elana into God’s presence that they may be enfolded in the grace of the Holy Spirit. Parents and Godparents who bring children for baptism must express their own trust and commitment to the promises of God, and their intention to bring up the children in the faith and practice of the Church.
The Baptism party gathers around the font. The parents and godparents are asked the questions: Q/ Before God and this congregation, you must affirm your belief in God and so I ask: Do you Believe in God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit? A/ I do. Q/ Will you accept the responsibilities placed upon you in bringing Jack and Elana for baptism? A/ I will. Q/ By your prayers and example, by your friendship and love, will you encourage them in the life and faith of the Christian community? A/ I will. Q/ As your life will be an example to Jack and Elana, will you turn away from evil thoughts, words and actions? A/ I will. Q/ Will you affirm Christian values, especially those of honesty, compassion and mercy? A/ I will. Priest to the congregation: You have heard our brothers and sisters respond to Christ. Will you support them in this calling? ALL: WE WILL. Priest: Almighty God lead you in the light of Christ to his everlasting kingdom. AMEN. 15
Prayers and Blessing of the water [Let us pray:] Grant, merciful God, that Jack and Elana may be so united with Christ in baptism that your new nature may be raised up in them where the fruit of your Spirit may grow and flourish. Give to family and friends the desire to share what you have revealed in your Holy Gospel. We give you thanks that at the beginning of creation your Holy Spirit moved upon the waters to bring forth light and life. With water you cleanse and replenish the earth; and through the waters of the Red Sea you led your people by Moses out of slavery into freedom, and brought them through the river Jordan into the land of promise. We give you thanks for your Son, Jesus Christ: for his baptism by John, for his anointing in the Holy Spirit, and that through the deep waters of death Jesus delivered us from our sins and was raised to new life in triumph. We give you thanks for the grace of the Holy Spirit who leads us to your kingdom. And now we give you thanks that you have called Jack / Elana to new birth in your Church through the waters of baptism. + Pour out your Holy Spirit in blessing and sanctify this water so that all who are baptized may be made one with Christ in his death and resurrection, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN. An affirmation of faith Priest: I ask the congregation to join with the parents and godparents in affirming the faith of the church. Do you believe in God the Father? A/: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in God the Son? A/: I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? A/: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. AMEN. 16
The Baptism Priest: Jack Alexander / Elana May, I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, AMEN. I sign you with the sign of the cross to show that you are marked as Christ’s own forever. (Oil that has been blessed by a bishop is used in anointing to symbolize being chosen in God, as were the priests and prophets of the Old Testament, and the New Testament understanding that we are all anointed in the Spirit through belief in Christ.)
Live as a disciple of Christ; fight the good fight, finish the race, keep the faith. ALL: Confess Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, look for his coming in glory. Priest: God has called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. ALL: Shine as a light in the world to the glory of God the Father. Priest: God has called you into his church. ALL: We therefore receive and welcome you as a member with us of the body of Christ, as a child of the one heavenly Father, and as an inheritor of the kingdom of God. Prayers for the child, parents and godparents Merciful God, in your infinite love you have made a new covenant with us in Jesus Christ, promising to be our God and the God of our children. Enable all who are baptized in your name to live as your faithful people. Fulfil your promises for Jack and Elana, we pray, and grant that they may grow in your faith and service. We pray for Jack and Elana’s parents, that in your Spirit of wisdom, their family may grow in your love, and their home share in the joy of your eternal kingdom. And we pray for Jack and Elana’s godparents; enable them to share with their godchild what you have revealed to us of your love in your holy gospel. We ask this in the name of our Saviour Jesus Christ, AMEN.

1. There is a green hill far away, outside a city wall, where the dear Lord was crucified, who died to save us all.
4. There was no other good enough to pay the price of sin, he only could unlock the gate of heaven, and let us in.
2. We may not know, we cannot tell, what pains he had to bear, but we believe it was for us he hung and suffered there.
5. O dearly, dearly has he loved, and we must love him too, and trust in his redeeming blood, and try his works to do. Cecil Frances Alexander 1818–95

Dear Parishioners, I write to thank you for your generous giving of time, talents and treasure for God’s work in our Church in Kew. Particularly I want to thank those who have made contributions in the year to the finances of the parish through the open plate, via giving envelopes, direct debits to the ADF (Anglican Development Fund) for the benefit of the parish and those who give by direct debit to the parish offertory account. Also many thanks to those who have made generous cash donations to specific projects in the parish. Without these generous financial offerings, professional ministry would surely be reduced. Such ministries as the ministry of the Vicar, the Chaplain, the Director of Music, office administration and Family and Children’s ministry and resources are vital to grow our parish over the next five years. Of course these are backed up by many hours of volunteer time given by good lay and ordained people in the parish to enhance professional ministry, which I give thanks for. All Christian congregations in Victoria and nationally are struggling to grow with ageing congregations and diminishing resources. Those churches who buck the trend are those who engage a wide range of resources and personnel alongside a generous giving of time talents and treasure in positive ways. As we face the next twelve months and into the next five years we have to devise strategies to enhance what we offer within our church and the wider community, which will require careful budgeting for the future. With the advent of our property development well and truly on the near horizon and the need to address major physical property decline in the Vicarage, Halls and Church we need to 24
start providing significant increases in financial giving and of our time and talents, to build up our ministries (especially children and families) and restore our site and its buildings to a real asset basis. Regular consistent giving through the ADF, direct debit from the bank and envelopes, make it much easier for the parish to budget for the future (so please consider these methods if you do not at the moment). As your new Vicar what has struck me has been the great pride and affection our parishioners have for their Church and an affection in the wider community for our special community of faith and its significant buildings. Previous generations have shown an amazing love and commitment for Holy Trinity which we are the inheritors of and custodians. I ask you this week to think about the many gifts God has given you through being a parishioner at Holy Trinity Kew and how God might be calling you to continue to give of your utmost so that others in the future may have the same opportunities for God’s grace that you have received here in this special place. I therefore ask that you seriously consider raising your financial giving by 10% over the next year and that if you ever thought of including Holy Trinity in your will? If you would like to talk to me or the Parish Wardens or the Treasurer about anything I have included in this letter please feel free to approach us. I am confident that the generous nature of our parishioners will continue to grow and benefit this special spiritual place and that the community of faith that presents to the wider community will grow numerically and financially. “The point is this: the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. (2 Corinthians 9:6-7) Yours in Christ, Father Robert
