Dear Parishioners,

Jesus saw his death on the cross as triumph over the powers of sin and darkness and drew through word pictures an illustration of the “grain of wheat” to show how this fundamental principle works in God’s kingdom.

Seeds cannot produce new life by themselves; they must first be planted in the earth before they can grow and produce leaf, then flower and finally fruit.

Jesus’ obedience and death on the cross obtained for us freedom and new life in the Holy Spirit. His cross frees us from the weight of sin and death and shows us the perfect way of love.

If we want to experience and enjoy the new life which Jesus offers, then the outer husk of our old, fallen nature, must be broken and put to death. In Baptism our “old nature” captured to sin is buried with Christ and we rise as a “new creation” in Christ. This process of death to “self” is both a one-­‐time event, such as baptism, and a daily, on-­‐going cycle in which God buries us more deeply into Jesus’ death to sin so we might rise anew and bear fruit for God. Here is one of the great paradoxes of the Christian faith. Death leads to life, when we "die" to our selves, we "rise" to new life in Jesus Christ.

The Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church.

We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

Dear Parishioners,

I write to thank you for your generous giving of time, talents and treasure for God’s work in our Church in Kew. Particularly I want to thank those who have made contributions in the year to the finances of the parish through the open plate, via giving envelopes, direct debits to the ADF (Anglican Development Fund) for the benefit of the parish and those who give by direct debit to the parish offertory account. Also many thanks to those who have made generous cash donations to specific projects in the parish. Without these generous financial offerings, professional ministry would surely be reduced. Such ministries as the ministry of the Vicar, the Chaplain, the Director of Music, office administration and Family and Children’s ministry and resources are vital to grow our parish over the next five years. Of course these are backed up by many hours of volunteer time given by good lay and ordained people in the parish to enhance professional ministry, which I give thanks for.

All Christian congregations in Victoria and nationally are struggling to grow with ageing congregations and diminishing resources. Those churches who buck the trend are those who engage a wide range of resources and personnel alongside a generous giving of time talents and treasure in positive ways.

As we face the next twelve months and into the next five years we have to devise strategies to enhance what we offer within our church and the wider community, which will require careful budgeting for the future. With the advent of our property development well and truly on the near horizon and the need to address 15

major physical property decline in the Vicarage, Halls and Church we need to start providing significant increases in financial giving and of our time and talents, to build up our ministries (especially children and families) and restore our site and its buildings to a real asset basis. Regular consistent giving through the ADF, direct debit from the bank and envelopes, make it much easier for the parish to budget for the future (so please consider these methods if you do not at the moment).

As your new Vicar what has struck me has been the great pride and affection our parishioners have for their Church and an affection in the wider community for our special community of faith and its significant buildings. Previous generations have shown an amazing love and commitment for Holy Trinity which we are the inheritors of and custodians.

I ask you this week to think about the many gifts God has given you through being a parishioner at Holy Trinity Kew and how God might be calling you to continue to give of your utmost so that others in the future may have the same opportunities for God’s grace that you have received here in this special place.

I therefore ask that you seriously consider raising your financial giving by 10% over the next year and that if you ever thought of including Holy Trinity in your will? If you would like to talk to me or the Parish Wardens or the Treasurer about anything I have included in this letter please feel free to approach us.

I am confident that the generous nature of our parishioners will continue to grow and benefit this special spiritual place and that the community of faith that presents to the wider community will grow numerically and financially.

Protocol for use of the Common Cup at Holy Communion in the Diocese of Melbourne

Background

A request to the Archbishop of Melbourne in 2014 raised the important question of the transfer of infection with the practice of the common cup according to Anglican rite and practice from the time of the Book of Common Prayer.

The Anglican Diocese of Toronto in 2003 commissioned a report on the risks of transmission of infections via the common cup used at services of Holy Communion. On examining the available scientific and medical literature, it concluded that the common cup could be a vehicle of bacteria transmission, in a similar way to our hands, and can be passed from surface to surface during the passing of the peace as well as being airborne.

However, the report concludes that sharing the common cup, and a handshake at the peace, along with attending a buffet dinner, or hugging, all present a minimal risk and therefore fall within the parameters of normal risks of daily living. Like all aspects of life however, if an individual’s immune system is compromised or weakened, the risk may be greater.

Confronting and responding to risk is a common human experience. We all take precautions to avoid risk. To face risks we need to be informed as well as establish best practice. The central act of worship for Anglicans is the gathering for Holy Communion. In some places, this is daily, weekly or at designated times.

Sharing the common cup may entail some risk, but Christians are called to embody risk as part of discipleship. The recent practice of intinction was historically for those ill and was administered by the priest, unlike the present where it is practised because it is seen as less risky. This is not a unanimous viewpoint supported by the available research. In fact the practice of the recipient of the host receiving the bread and then dipping into the wine may be more risky.

Given the current perceptions, practices and understandings of the use of the common cup and improved knowledge about infection, the Anglican church needs to ensure that policies relating to the administration of Holy Communion be well known and adopted as best practice. The following protocols and practices ought to be adopted and made available to all clergy, licensed Eucharistic assistants and all parishioners.

Recommended protocol for administration of Holy Communion 1. Worshippers are to be made aware of the possibility of infections due to handshaking, colds and flu and when visiting people with an illness or preparing food.

Notices should be displayed in all churches to pass on these details.

2. All who lead worship need to ensure hands are clean and precautions taken which can reduce the possibility of the risk of sharing infections.

3. Before any service of Holy Communion, all vessels are washed in hot soapy water with appropriate levels of disinfectant. They should be left to dry and not wiped clean.

Metal is probably the best material to reduce any perceived transmission.

4. Purificators are to be linen and used only once. They are to be laundered in hot water. All linen used should be laundered in hot water.

5. Each person administering the chalice must thoroughly wipe the rim of the chalice with the purificators after each person communicates and then move the purificator so that the same part is not used twice.

6. Use of the lavabo is a reminder to the President of the Eucharist, following the passing of the peace, of the importance of clean hands. It is therefore more than symbolic. It has a practical purpose.

7. Gluten free wafers are to be held on a separate Paten. It is a good practice for the clergy and those who are assisting with the administration of the bread to use one hand for Gluten free and the other for all others.

8. Intinction should be the responsibility of the priest. Dirty finger nails, nail polish etc. are common and to be avoided.
