Dear Parishioners, How do we enter the Kingdom of God? In proclaiming the good news, Jesus gave two clear things each of us must do to in order to receive the Kingdom of God: repent and believe. When we accept Christ's rule in our hearts and minds and believe the gospel, Jesus gives us the grace and strength to live a new way of life as members of his Kingdom. He gives us grace to reject a kingdom ruled by sin and the devil, who is the father of lies (John 8:44) and the ruler of this present world (John 12:31). So that is why repentance must be the first step towards getting back on the path to the Kingdom of God. If we are only sorry for the effects of our sins, we will very likely keep repeating the sin that is controlling us. True repentance requires a contrite heart (Psalm 51:17) and sorrow for sin and a firm decision to avoid/ renounce it in the future. Jesus gives us grace to see sin for what it really is selfishness and pride- a rejection of his love and wisdom for our lives and a refusal to do what is good and in accord with his will. To believe is to take Jesus at his word and to recognise that God loved us so much that he sent his only begotten Son to free us from bondage to sin and harmful desires. God loved us first and he invites us in love to surrender our lives to him. Do you believe that the gospel -the good news of Jesus - has power to free you from servitude to sin and fear? Sentence: The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news. Mark 1.15

The minister reads aloud the commandments. Hear the commandments which God gave his people Israel. 1

I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of slavery; you shall have no other gods but me. 2 You shall not make for yourself a graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them or serve them. 3 You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. 4 Remember the sabbath day to keep it holy. Six days shall you labour and do all you have to do, but the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord your God. 5 Honour your father and your mother. 6 You shall do no murder. 7 You shall not commit adultery. 8 You shall not steal. 9 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour. 10 You shall not covet anything that is your neighbourâ€™s. God of the new and eternal covenant, as the forty days of the great flood swept away the worldâ€™s corruption and watered new beginnings of righteousness and life: grant to us, who are washed clean and born again in the saving flood of baptism, the wellspring of your grace, that your gift of new life may flourish once again; through Jesus Christ our Redeemer, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Genesis 9.8-17 Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him, 9 ‘As for me, I am establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you,10 and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the domestic animals, and every animal of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark. 11 I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.’ 12 God said, ‘This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: 13 I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.’ 17 God said to Noah, ‘This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.’ 8

Second Reading: 1 Peter 3.18-22 18

For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit, 19 in which also he went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison, 20 who in former times did not obey, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight people, were saved through water. 21 And baptism, which this prefigured, now saves you窶馬ot as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him.
