Dear Parishioners, When Jesus taught he spoke with an authority no one had ever seen before. When the Rabbis taught they supported their statements with quotes from other authorities. The prophets spoke with assigned authority - "Thus says the Lord." When Jesus spoke he needed no authorities to back his teaching. Jesus was authority personified - the Word of God made flesh. When he spoke, God spoke. When he directed even the demons obeyed. Augustine of Hippo (354-430 AD) remarked that "faith is mighty, but without love it profits nothing. The devils confessed Christ, but lacking charity it availed nothing. They said, 'What have we to do with you' (Mark 1:24)? They confessed a sort of faith, but without love. Hence they were devils." Holy Scripture tells us that true faith works through love (Galatians 5:6) and flourishes in hope (Romans 15:13). Our faith is made perfect in love because love turns us to the greater good that is God himself as well as the good of our neighbour who is created in the image and likeness of God. Hope anchors our faith in the promises of God and purifies our aspirations for the things, which will last for eternity. That is why the word of Christ has power to set us free from all that would keep us obliged to sin, deception, and misery. Faith is both a free gift of God and the free assent of our will to the whole truth that God has disclosed. To live, grow, and continue in the faith to the end, we must constantly nourish it with word and sacrament. The Lord gives us his Holy Spirit to enlighten our minds that we may grow in his truth and in the knowledge of his great love for each of us. Are you keen to be taught by the Lord and to conform your life according to his word and sacrament? Yours in Christ, Fr Robert

Hymn: Glorious things of you are spoken TiS 446
1. Glorious things of you are spoken, Zion, city of our God: he whose word cannot be broken formed you for his own abode. On the Rock of Ages founded, what can shake your sure repose? With salvation’s walls surrounded, you may smile at all your foes.
3. Blest inhabitants of Zion, washed in their Redeemer’s blood: Jesus, whom their souls rely on, makes them kings and priests to God. For his love his people raises over self to reign as kings, and as priests, his solemn praises each for a thank-offering brings.
2. See, the streams of living waters, springing from eternal love, well supply your sons and daughters and all fear of want remove: who can faint while such a river ever flows their thirst to assuage — grace, which like the Lord the giver never fails from age to age.
4. Saviour, since of Zion’s city I, through grace, a member am, let the world deride or pity, I will glory in your name: fading are the worldlings’ pleasures, all their boasted pomp and show; solid joys and lasting treasures none but Zion’s children know. John Newton 1725–1807 alt. Music by permission Oxford University Press
Invocation:
Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever. 4
Greeting:
The Lord be with you. AND ALSO WITH YOU.
(see Ruth 2:4)
Sentence: Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness. Matthew 9.35
Prayer of Preparation: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: God of love and peace, you know what we think and feel. Touch our hearts that our thoughts and actions may be good so that we may love you and honour you, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN.
The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’
5
The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. God of mercy and grace, we have sometimes thought wrong things, and done wrong things and we have not always loved each other as we should. We are sorry. Forgive us and help us to love and obey you, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Absolution {Celebrant} Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of the Day
Amen.
THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from GNT First Reading: Deuteronomy 18:15-20 15
Instead, he will send you a prophet like me from among your own people, and you are to obey him. 16 “On the day that you were gathered at Mount Sinai, you begged not to hear the LORD speak again or to see his fiery presence any more, because you were afraid you would die. 17 So the LORD said to me, ‘They have made a wise request. 18 I will send them a prophet like you from among their own people; I will tell him what to say, and he will tell the people everything I command. 19 He will speak in my name, and I will punish anyone who refuses to obey him. 20 But if any prophet dares to speak a message in my name when I did not command him to do so, he must die for it, and so must any prophet who speaks in the name of other gods.’

Praise the LORD! With all my heart I will thank the LORD in the assembly of his people. 2 How wonderful are the things the LORD does! All who are delighted with them want to understand them. 3 All he does is full of honour and majesty; his righteousness is eternal. 4 The LORD does not let us forget his wonderful actions; he is kind and merciful. 5 He provides food for those who honour him; he never forgets his covenant. 6 He has shown his power to his people by giving them the lands of foreigners. 7 In all he does he is faithful and just; all his commands are dependable. 8 They last for all time; they were given in truth and righteousness. 9 He set his people free and made an eternal covenant with them. Holy and mighty is he! 10 The way to become wise is to honour the LORD; he gives sound judgment to all who obey his commands. He is to be praised forever.

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 8.1-13 Now, concerning what you wrote about food offered to idols. It is true, of course, that “all of us have knowledge,” as they say. Such knowledge, however, puffs a person up with pride; but love builds up. 2 Those who think they know something really don't know as they ought to know. 3 But the person who loves God is known by him. 4 So then, about eating the food offered to idols: we know that an idol stands for something that does not really exist; we know that there is only the one God. 5 Even if there are so-called “gods,” whether in heaven or on earth, and even though there are many of these “gods” and “lords,” 6 yet there is for us only one God, the Father, who is the Creator of all things and for whom we live; and there is only one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things were created and through whom we live. 7 But not everyone knows this truth. Some people have been so used to idols that to this day when they eat such food they still think of it as food that belongs to an idol; their conscience is weak, and they feel they are defiled by the food. 8 Food, however, will not improve our relation with God; we shall not lose anything if we do not eat, nor shall we gain anything if we do eat. 9 Be careful, however, not to let your freedom of action make those who are weak in the faith fall into sin.10 Suppose a person whose conscience is weak in this matter sees you, who have so-called “knowledge,” eating in the temple of an idol; will not this encourage him to eat food offered to idols? 11 And so this weak person, your brother for whom Christ died, will perish because of your “knowledge”! 12 And in this way you will be sinning against Christ by sinning against other Christians and wounding their weak conscience. 13 So then, if food makes a believer sin, I will never eat meat again, so as not to make a believer fall into sin.

Gradual Hymn: Lord, your word abiding TiS 427
1. Lord, your word abiding, and our footsteps guiding, gives us joy for ever, binds us all together. 2. Who can tell the pleasure, who recount the treasure, by your word imparted to the simple-hearted? 3. Word of mercy, giving nourishment for living: word of life, supplying comfort for the dying. 4. O that we, discerning its most holy learning, Lord, may love and fear you, evermore be near you. Henry Williams Baker 1821–77 alt.

WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET OUR LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD.
21
Jesus and his disciples came to the town of Capernaum, and on the next Sabbath Jesus went to the synagogue and began to teach. 22 The people who heard him were amazed at the way he taught, for he wasn't like the teachers of the Law; instead, he taught with authority. 23 Just then a man with an evil spirit came into the synagogue and screamed, 24 “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Are you here to destroy us? I know who you are—you are God's holy messenger!” 25 Jesus ordered the spirit, “Be quiet, and come out of the man!” 26 The evil spirit shook the man hard, gave a loud scream, and came out of him. 27 The people were all so amazed that they started saying to one another, “What is this? Is it some kind of new teaching? This man has authority to give orders to the evil spirits, and they obey him!” 28 And so the news about Jesus spread quickly everywhere in the province of Galilee.

Offertory Hymn: Jesus! the name high over all TiS 218
1. Jesus! the name high over all, in hell, or earth, or sky; angels and earthlings to it fall, and devils fear and fly, and devils fear and fly.
4. O that the world might taste and see the riches of his grace; the arms of love that compass me would everyone embrace, would everyone embrace.
2. Jesus! the name to sinners dear, the name to sinners given; it scatters all their guilty fear, it turns their hell to heaven, it turns their hell to heaven. 3. Jesus! the prisoner’s fetters breaks, and bruises Satan’s head; power into strengthless souls it speaks, and life into the dead, and life into the dead.
5. Happy, if with my dying breath I might but gasp his name; preach him to all, and cry in death: behold, behold the Lamb, behold, behold the Lamb! Arrangement © C. L. Fouvy Charles Wesley 1707–88 alt.

God has spoken by his prophets TiS 158
1. God has spoken by his prophets, spoken his unchanging word, each, from age to age proclaiming God, the one, the righteous Lord. In the world’s despair and turmoil one firm anchor holds us fast: God is king, his throne eternal, God the first, and God the last. 2. God has spoken by Christ Jesus, Christ, the everlasting Son, brightness of the Father’s glory, with the Father ever one; spoken by the Word incarnate, God from God, ere time began, Light from Light, to earth descending, God, revealed as Son of Man.
3. God is speaking by his Spirit, speaking to our hearts again, in the age-long word expounding God’s own message, now as then, through the rise and fall of nations one sure faith yet standing fast; God still speaks, his word unchanging, God the first, and God the last.
