Dear Parishioners, When Jesus preached the Gospel he called others to follow as his disciples and he gave them a mission - “Follow me and I will make you fish for people.” What kind of disciples did he choose? Smelly fishermen! In the choice of the first apostles we see a distinctive feature of Jesus' work: he chose very ordinary people. Jesus wanted ordinary people who could take on a task and do it extraordinarily well. He chose these individuals, not for what they were, but for what they would be capable of becoming under his direction and authority. When the Lord calls us to serve, we must not think we have nothing to offer. The Lord takes what ordinary people, like us, can offer and uses it for greatness in his kingdom. Do you believe that God wants to work in and through you today for his glory? Jesus speaks exactly the same message to us today: we will "catch people" for the kingdom of God if we allow the light of Jesus Christ to shine through us. God wants others to see the light of Christ in us in the way we live, speak, and witness the joy of the gospel. “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and give glory to your father who is in heaven?” (Mtt 5:16) Do you witness to those around you the joy of the Gospel and do you pray for your neighbours, co-workers, and relatives that they may come to know the Lord Jesus Christ and grow in the knowledge of his love? Yours in Christ, Fr Robert

1. You servants of God, your Master proclaim, and publish abroad his wonderful name; the name all-victorious of Jesus extol; his kingdom is glorious, and rules over all.

3. Salvation to God, who sits on the throne! let all cry aloud, and honour the Son: the praises of Jesus the angels proclaim, fall down on their faces, and worship the Lamb.

2. Our God rules on high, almighty to save; and still he is nigh, his presence we have; the great congregation his triumph shall sing, ascribing salvation to Jesus our king.

4. Then let us adore, and give him his right, all glory and power, all wisdom and might, all honour and blessing, with angels above, and thanks never-ceasing, and infinite love. Charles Wesley 1707–88 alt.

Invocation:

Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever.

Bountiful God, through your Son you have called us to repent of our sin, to believe the good news, and to celebrate the coming of your kingdom: teach us, like Christ’s first apostles, to hear the call to discipleship, and, forsaking old ways, to proclaim the gospel of new life to a broken world; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Jonah 3.1-10 The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time, saying, 2 ‘Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.’ 3 So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord . Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days’ walk across. 4 Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s walk. And he cried out, ‘Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!’ 5 And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth. 6 When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, removed his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. 7 Then he had a proclamation made in Nineveh: ‘By the decree of the king and his nobles: No human being or animal, no herd or flock, shall taste anything. They shall not feed, nor shall they drink water. 8 Human beings and animals shall be covered with sackcloth, and they shall cry mightily to God. All shall turn from their evil ways and from the violence that is in their hands. 9 Who knows? God may relent and change his mind; he may turn from his fierce anger, so that we do not perish.’ 10 When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them; and he did not do it. 1

Response:

Verses (cantor only) 1. Yet be still, my soul, and wait for God, from whom comes my hope of deliverance. God only is my rock and my salvation, my tower of strength, so that I stand unshaken. Response 2. In God is my deliverance and my honour, the rock of my strength and my place of refuge. Put your trust in God always, you people; pour out your hearts before the one who is our refuge. Response 3. For we mortals are only a puff of wind; the great among us are but illusion: weighed in the balance they rise upward, all of them lighter than air. Response 4. Put no trust in extortion, set no vain hopes on plunder: if riches increase do not set your heart upon them. Response 5. Once God has spoken, and twice I have heard God say: ‘Power belongs to God alone.’ Steadfast love, O Lord, is yours, and you reward us all according to our deeds. Response 9

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 7.29-31 29

I mean, brothers and sisters, the appointed time has grown short; from now on, let even those who have wives be as though they had none, 30 and those who mourn as though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no possessions, 31 and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of this world is passing away.

Gradual Hymn: Safe in the shadow of the Lord TiS 644

1. Safe in the shadow of the Lord beneath his hand and power, I trust in him, I trust in him, my fortress and my tower.

4. His holy angels keep my feet secure from every stone; I trust in him, I trust in him, and unafraid go on.

2. My hope is set on God alone though Satan spreads his snare, I trust in him, I trust in him, to keep me in his care.

5. Strong in the everlasting Name, and in my Father’s care, I trust in him, I trust in him, who hears and answers prayer.

3. From fears and phantoms of the night, from foes about my way, I trust in him, I trust in him, by darkness as by day.

6. Safe in the shadow of the Lord, possessed by love divine, I trust in him, I trust in him, and meet his love with mine. Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, 15 and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.’ 16 As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake—for they were fishermen. 17 And Jesus said to them, ‘Follow me and I will make you fish for people.’ 18 And immediately they left their nets and followed him. 19 As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. 20 Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him.

1. Songs of thankfulness and praise, Jesus, Lord, to thee we raise, manifested by the star to the sages from afar; branch of royal David's stem in thy birth at Bethlehem; anthems be to thee addressed, God in man made manifest.

4. Sun and moon shall darkened be, stars shall fall, the heavens shall flee; Christ will then like lightning shine, all will see his glorious sign; all will then the trumpet hear, all will see the Judge appear; thou by all wilt be confessed, God in man made manifest.

2. Manifest at Jordan's stream, Prophet, Priest and King supreme; and at Cana, wedding guest, in thy Godhead manifest; manifest in power divine, changing water into wine; anthems be to thee addressed, God in man made manifest.

5. Grant us grace to see thee, Lord, mirrored in thy holy Word; may we imitate thee now, and be pure, as pure art thou; that we like to thee may be at thy great Epiphany; and may praise thee, ever blest, God in man made manifest.

3. Manifest in making whole palsied limbs and fainting soul; manifest in valiant fight, quelling all the devil's might; manifest in gracious will, ever bringing good from ill; anthems be to thee addressed, God in man made manifest.

And now, O Father, mindful of the love TiS 519

1. And now, O Father, mindful of the love that bought us, once for all, on Calvary’s hill, and having with us him who pleads above, we here present, we bring before you still that only offering perfect in your eyes, the one true, pure, immortal sacrifice. 2. Look, Father, look on his anointed face, and only look on us as found in him; look not on our misusings of your grace, our prayer so halting, and our faith so dim: for now between our sins and their reward we set the passion of your Son our Lord. 3. And so we come; O draw us to your feet, most patient Saviour, who can love us still; and by this food, so awesome and so sweet, deliver us from every touch of ill; in your own service make us glad and free, and may we in your presence ever be. William Bright 1824–1901 alt.
