Dear Parishioners, John the Baptist's life was fired by one all-consuming desire - to point others to Jesus Christ and to the advent of his kingdom. John’s message was similar to the message of the Old Testament prophets who reproached the people of God for their infidelity and who tried to rouse true repentance in them. In the Gospel of Luke Jesus tells us that John the Baptist was more than a prophet (7:26). John was the voice of the Comforter who is coming (John 1:23; Isaiah 40:1-3). John's baptism was for repentance - turning away from sin and taking on a new way of life according to God's word. Our baptism in Jesus Christ by water and the Spirit results in a new birth and entry into God's kingdom as his beloved. (John 3:5). His word and sacrament has power to change and transform our lives that we may be lights illuminating a path for others to Christ. Like John the Baptist, we too are called to give witness to the light and truth of Jesus Christ. Do you point others to Christ in the way you live, work, and speak?

Yours in Christ, Fr Robert

Hymn: TiS 271 (tune 448)

1. The advent of our God with eager prayers we greet, and singing hasten on his road his coming reign to meet.

4. As judge, on clouds of light, he soon will come again, his scattered people to unite, with them in heaven to reign.

2. The everlasting Son was born to make us free; and he a servant’s form put on to gain our liberty.

5. Then evil flee away before the rising dawn! Let our old nature day by day God’s image still put on.

3. Let Zion now arise to greet her infant king, and gladly take with thankful heart the peace he comes to bring.

6. Praise to the incarnate Son who comes to set us free, with Father, Spirit, ever one to all eternity. Arrangement © Australian Hymn Book Co Charles Coffin 1676–1749 tr. John Chandler 1806–76 and others

Invocation:

Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever.

Greeting:

The Lord be with you. AND ALSO WITH YOU.

(see Ruth 2:4)

Sentence: Prepare the way of the lord, make his paths straight. For the glory of the lord shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together. Luke 3.4; Isaiah 40.5a 3

Prayer of Preparation: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: God of love and peace, you know what we think and feel. Touch our hearts that our thoughts and actions may be good so that we may love you and honour you, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN.

The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’

4

The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. God of mercy and grace, we have sometimes thought wrong things, and done wrong things and we have not always loved each other as we should. We are sorry. Forgive us and help us to love and obey you, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Absolution {Celebrant} Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of the Day

Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from GNT First Reading: Isaiah 40:1-11 “Comfort my people,” says our God. “Comfort them! 2 Encourage the people of Jerusalem. Tell them they have suffered long enough and their sins are now forgiven. I have punished them in full for all their sins.” 3 A voice cries out, “Prepare in the wilderness a road for the LORD! Clear the way in the desert for our God! 4 Fill every valley; level every mountain. The hills will become a plain, and the rough country will be made smooth. 5 Then the glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all people will see it. The LORD himself has promised this.” 6 A voice cries out, “Proclaim a message!” “What message shall I proclaim?” I ask. “Proclaim that all human beings are like grass; they last no longer than wild flowers. 7 Grass withers and flowers fade when the LORD sends the wind blowing over them. People are no more enduring than grass. 8 Yes, grass withers and flowers fade, but the word of our God endures forever.” 9 Jerusalem, go up on a high mountain and proclaim the good news! Call out with a loud voice, Zion; announce the good news! Speak out and do not be afraid. Tell the towns of Judah that their God is coming! 10 The Sovereign LORD is coming to rule with power, bringing with him the people he has rescued. 11 He will take care of his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs together and carry them in his arms; he will gently lead their mothers.

Psalm 85: 1-2, 8-13 LORD, you have been merciful to your land; you have made Israel prosperous again. 2 You have forgiven your people's sins and pardoned all their wrongs. 8

I am listening to what the LORD God is saying; he promises peace to us, his own people, if we do not go back to our foolish ways. 9 Surely he is ready to save those who honour him, and his saving presence will remain in our land. 10 Love and faithfulness will meet; righteousness and peace will embrace. 11 Human loyalty will reach up from the earth, and God's righteousness will look down from heaven. 12 The LORD will make us prosperous, and our land will produce rich harvests. 13 Righteousness will go before the LORD and prepare the path for him. Second Reading: 2 Peter 3:8-15 8

But do not forget one thing, my dear friends! There is no difference in the Lord's sight between one day and a thousand years; to him the two are the same. 9 The Lord is not slow to do what he has promised, as some think. Instead, he is patient with you, because he does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants all to turn away from their sins. 10

But the Day of the Lord will come like a thief. On that Day the heavens will disappear with a shrill noise, the heavenly bodies will burn up and be destroyed, and the earth with everything in it will vanish.[a] 11 Since all these things will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people should you be? Your lives should be holy and dedicated to God, 12 as you wait for the Day of God and do your best to make it come soon—the Day when the heavens will burn up and be destroyed, and the heavenly bodies will be melted by the heat.13 But we wait for what God has promised: new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness will be at home. 7

14

And so, my friends, as you wait for that Day, do your best to be pure and faultless in God's sight and to be at peace with him. 15 Look on our Lord's patience as the opportunity he is giving you to be saved, just as our dear friend Paul wrote to you, using the wisdom that God gave him.

Gradual Hymn: Tis 591

1. Forty days and forty nights you were fasting in the wild, forty days and forty nights tempted, and yet undefiled: 2. let us your endurance share and from earthly greed abstain, with you watching unto prayer, with you strong to suffer pain. 3. And if Satan on us press flesh or spirit to assail, Victor in the wilderness, grant we may not faint or fail. 4. Keep, O keep us, Saviour dear, ever constant by your side, that with you we may appear at the eternal Eastertide. George Hunt Smyttan 1822–70 and Francis Pott 1832–1909 alt.

WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET OUR LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD.

1

This is the Good News about Jesus Christ, the Son of God. 2 It began as the prophet Isaiah had written: “God said, ‘I will send my messenger ahead of you to open the way for you.’ 3 Someone is shouting in the desert, ‘Get the road ready for the Lord; make a straight path for him to travel!’” 4 So John appeared in the desert, baptizing and preaching. “Turn away from your sins and be baptized,” he told the people, “and God will forgive your sins.” 5 Many people from the province of Judea and the city of Jerusalem went out to hear John. They confessed their sins, and he baptized them in the Jordan River. 6

John wore clothes made of camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. 7 He announced to the people, “The man who will come after me is much greater than I am. I am not good enough even to bend down and untie his sandals. 8 I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

Alleluia

(sung by all)

Offertory Hymn: TiS 194

1. O love how deep, how broad, how high! it fills the heart with ecstasy that God, the Son of God, should take our mortal form for mortals’ sake. 2. He sent no angel to our race of higher or of lower place but wore the robe of human frame himself, and to this lost world came.

5 For us to wicked hands betrayed, scourged, mocked, in purple robe arrayed, he bore the shameful cross and death; for us at length gave up his breath. 6. For us he rose from death again, for us he went on high to reign, for us he sent his Spirit here to guide, to strengthen and to cheer. 7. To him whose boundless love has won salvation for us through his Son, to God the Father, glory be both now and through eternity.

3. For us he was baptized, and bore his holy fast, and hungered sore; for us temptations sharp he knew; for us the tempter overthrew.

Attrib. Thomas à Kempis 1379–1471 tr. Benjamin Webb 1819–85 alt.

4. For us he prayed, for us he taught, for us his daily works he wrought, by words and signs and actions, thus still seeking not himself but us.

Offertory Prayer: Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our offerings for your glory and for the service of your kingdom. BLESSED BE GOD FOR EVER. 12

1. The voice of God goes out to all the world; his glory speaks across the universe. The great King’s herald cries from star to star: ‘With power, with justice, he will walk his way.’ 2. The Lord has said, ‘Receive my messenger, my promise to the world, my pledge made flesh, a lamp to every nation, light from light’: with power, with justice, he will walk his way. 3. The broken reed he will not trample down, nor set his heel upon the dying flame. He binds the wounds, and health is in his hand: with power, with justice, he will walk his way. 4. Anointed with the Spirit and with power, he comes to crown with comfort all the weak, to show the face of justice to the poor: with power, with justice, he will walk his way. 5. His touch will bless the eyes that darkness held, the lame shall run, the halting tongue shall sing, and prisoners laugh in light and liberty: with power, with justice, he will walk his way.
