Hymn: TiS 235

1. A man there lived in Galilee like no one else before, for he alone from first to last our flesh unsullied wore; a perfect life of perfect deeds once to the world was shown, that everyone might mark his steps and in them place their own. 2. A man there died on Calvary, above all others brave; he gave to all, he saved and blessed, himself he scorned to save; no thought can gauge the weight of woe on him, the sinless, laid; we only know that with his death our ransom price was paid.

3. A man there stands at God’s right hand, divine, yet human still; that grand, heroic, peerless soul death sought in vain to kill. All power is his: supreme he rules all realms of time and space; yet still our human cares and needs find in his heart a place. Somerset Corry Lowry 1855–1932 alt. Words by permission Oxford University Press Music and arrangement from the Oxford Book of Carols by permission Oxford University Press

Invocation:

Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever.

Greeting:

The Lord be with you. AND ALSO WITH YOU.

(see Ruth 2:4)

Forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, let us press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3.13b–14

The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’

3

The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

The Absolution {Celebrant} Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of the Day Almighty God, your Son Jesus was the stone rejected by the builders, and, by your doing, he has been made the chief cornerstone: grant that, by the power of his Spirit working in us, we may become living stones built up into your dwelling place, a temple holy and acceptable to you; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD (CEV) First Reading: Exodus 20.1-4, 7-9, 12-20 God said to the people of Israel: 2 I am the LORD your God, the one who brought you out of Egypt where you were slaves. 3 Do not worship any god except me. 4 Do not make idols that look like anything in the sky or on earth or in the ocean under the earth. 7 Do not misuse my name.[a] I am the LORD your God, and I will punish anyone who misuses my name. 8 Remember that the Sabbath Day belongs to me. 9 You have six days when you can do your work, 12 Respect your father and your mother, and you will live a long time in the land I am giving you. 13 Do not murder. 14 Be faithful in marriage. 15 Do not steal. 16 Do not tell lies about others. 17 Do not want anything that belongs to someone else. Don’t want anyone’s house, wife or husband, slaves, oxen, donkeys or anything else. 18 The people trembled with fear when they heard the thunder and the trumpet and saw the lightning and the smoke coming from the mountain. They stood a long way off19 and said to Moses, “If you speak to us, we will listen. But don’t let God speak to us, or we will die!” 20 “Don’t be afraid!” Moses replied. “God has come only to test you, so that by obeying him you won’t sin.”

19 (Tune TiS 116)

1. God's law is perfect, and converts the soul in sin that lies: God's testimony is most sure, and makes the humble wise. 2. The statutes of the Lord are right, they all rejoice the heart; the Lord's command is pure, and will light to the eyes impart. 3. The Lord God's worship is most pure, delighting every heart; the judgments of the Lord are true, perfect in every part. 4. They more than gold, than much fine gold to be desired are; than honey from the honeycomb they sweeter are by far. 5. Moreover, they your servants warn upon the pilgrim way; God's law provides a great reward which can be ours today. Scottish Psalter 1650 alt.

WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET OUR LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD.

33

Jesus told the chief priests and leaders to listen to this story: A land owner once planted a vineyard. He built a wall around it and dug a pit to crush the grapes in. He also built a lookout tower. Then he rented out his vineyard and left the country. 34 When it was harvest time, the owner sent some servants to get his share of the grapes. 35 But the renters grabbed those servants. They beat up one, killed one, and stoned one of them to death. 36 He then sent more servants than he did the first time. But the renters treated them in the same way. 37 Finally, the owner sent his own son to the renters, because he thought they would respect him. 38 But when they saw the man’s son, they said, “Someday he will own the vineyard. Let’s kill him! Then we can have it all for ourselves.” 39 So they grabbed him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. 40 Jesus asked, “When the owner of that vineyard comes, what do you suppose he will do to those renters?” 41 The chief priests and leaders answered, “He will kill them in some horrible way. Then he will rent out his vineyard to people who will give him his share of grapes at harvest time.” 42 Jesus replied, “You surely know that the Scriptures say, ‘The stone that the builders tossed aside is now the most important stone of all. This is something the Lord has done, and it is amazing to us.’ 43 I tell you that God’s kingdom will be taken from you and given to people who will do what he demands. 44 Anyone who stumbles over this stone will be crushed, and anyone it falls on will be smashed to pieces.” 45 When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard these stories, they knew that Jesus was talking about them. 46 So they looked for a way to arrest Jesus. But they were afraid to, because the people thought he was a prophet.

SERMON

HYMN: TiS 699 A new commandment I give unto you that you love one another as I have loved you, that you love one another as I have loved you. By this will others know that you are my disciples if you have love one for another; by this will others know that you are my disciples if you have love one for another.

Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. We believe in God the Father who made us and loves us. We believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who saves us and loves us. We believe in the Holy Spirit, who loves us and gives us life.
