TiS

1. O breath of life, come sweeping through us, revive your church with life and power; O breath of life, come cleanse, renew us, and fit your church to meet this hour.

3. O breath of love, come breathe within us, renewing thought and will and heart; come, love of Christ, afresh to win us, revive your church in every part. 4. Revive us, Lord! Is zeal abating while harvest fields are vast and white? Revive us, Lord, the world is waiting, equip your church to spread the light.

2. O wind of God, come bend us, break us, till humbly we confess our need; then in your tenderness remake us, revive, restore: for this we plead.

Invocation:

Elizabeth Ann Porter Head 1850–1936

Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever.

‘Let anyone who is thirsty come to me,’ says the Lord; ‘and let the one who believes in me drink. For out of your heart shall flow rivers of living water.’ John 7.38 3

Almighty God, at the feast of Pentecost you sent your Holy Spirit to the disciples, filling them with joy and boldness to preach the gospel: empower us with that same Spirit to witness to your redeeming love and draw all people to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

8

Acts 2.1-21 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. 5 Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. 6 And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. 7 Amazed and astonished, they asked, ‘Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.’ 12 All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, ‘What does this mean?’ 13 But others sneered and said, ‘They are filled with new wine.’ 14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: ‘Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. 15 Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. 16 No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: 17 “In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. 18 Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. 19 And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. 20 The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. 21 Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” 1

Psalm 104 The response is sung first by the choir and then by the congregation. Thereafter it is sung by the congregation after each verse. The verses are sung by the choir. Response: (all)

Verses (sung by choir) 1. Praise the Lord, O my soul, O Lord God, your glory is great. How many are your works, O Lord! The earth is full of your handiwork. Response 2. All creatures look to you to give them their food to eat. When you open your hand, they are filled with good, when you hide your face they pine away. Response 3. When you take away their breath, they die, and return to the earth, whence they came. When you send forth your Spirit, all things spring to life, and the face of the earth is renewed. Response 4. The glory of the Lord shall never cease, the Lord shall rejoice in his works. I will sing to the Lord as long as I live, I will praise my God while my breath remains. Response

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 12.1-13 1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2 You know that when you were pagans, you were enticed and led astray to idols that could not speak. 3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says ‘Let Jesus be cursed!’ and no one can say ‘Jesus is Lord’ except by the Holy Spirit. 4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses. 12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

Gradual Hymn: TiS 703

(Sung twice) As the deer pants for the water, so my soul longs after you. You alone are my heart’s desire and I long to worship you. You alone are my strength, my shield, to you alone may my spirit yield. You alone are my heart’s desire and I long to worship you. When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’ 22 When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.’

We pray for those called to find a new Incumbent for this place. Bountiful God, give to this parish a faithful pastor who will faithfully speak your word and minister your sacraments; an encourager who will equip your people for ministry and enable us to fulfil our calling. Give to those who will choose, wisdom, discernment and patience, and to us give warm and generous hearts, for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.

1. Fill my whole life, O Lord my God, in every part with praise, that my whole being may proclaim your being and your ways.

4. Fill every part of me with praise: let all my being speak of you and of your love, O Lord, poor though I be and weak.

2. Not for the lip of praise alone nor ev’n the praising heart I ask, but for a life made up of praise in every part:

5. So shall you, Lord, receive from me the praise and glory due; and so shall I begin on earth the song for ever new.

3. praise in the common things of life, its goings out and in; praise in each duty and each deed, however small and mean.

6. So shall no part of day and night from sacredness be free; but with you, Lord, in every step my fellowship will be. Horatius Bonar 1808–89 alt.

1. Filled with the Spirit’s power, with one accord the infant church confessed its risen Lord: O Holy Spirit, in the church today no less your power of fellowship display. 2. Now with the mind of Christ set us on fire, that unity may be our great desire: give joy and peace; give faith to hear your call, and readiness in each to work for all. 3. Widen our love, good Spirit, to embrace in your strong care all those of every race: like wind and fire with life among us move till we are known as Christ’s, and Christians prove. J. R. From the Locum, The feast of Pentecost is significant for us as it assures us of the continuing presence of God with in us. It marks the fulfilment of Jesus’ promise: “I am with you, to the end of the age”. Of, course, Pentecost also marks the birth of the Church – the Body of Christ, of which we are members through our Baptism. Next Sunday, 3 of our young ladies, Grace and Sophie Lucas with Livia Tropea, will make their First Communion. Please pray for these girls as they take this important step. On a different note, I regret to advise you that I will finish as Locum at the end of the month. Unfortunately I do not have the stamina to continue on in the task. Those who have times of Clinical Depression” will well understand why I must return to a “quieter state”. I love being here with you, but one’s health must come first. Next Sunday, is our Patronal Festival, our Guest Preacher will be Grace Sharon. She is a Deacon and has just returned to Australia from the Thai – Burma border where she has been working with the Karen, in particular, in education for their children. So with that, I wish all peace and Joy in the Lord. Fr Graham The June issue of TMA (The Melbourne Anglican) is now available in the foyer/narthex. This issue includes: · Special reports on how Anglicans have responded to recent violence against women and children at home and abroad; · Reaction to the federal budget from the heads of Anglican agencies the Brotherhood of St Laurence, Anglicare Australia, Anglican Overseas Aid and Benetas; · “MP, economist stress learning, future jobs” – coverage of the May public conversation with Archbishop Freier, Labor MP Clare O’Neil and Professor Ian Harper; · Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt responds to former Victorian Supreme Court judge David Harper’s opinion piece on climate change in May’s TMA; · Part 2 of an interview with renowned theologian Miroslav Volf, who says the pace and fragmentation of modern life, family and culture have made the practice and passing on of religious belief that much more difficult; · Dr Michael Bird, from Ridley Melbourne, reflects on the significance of the Ascension, which he says is often seen by Christians as “a kind of optional epilogue” to Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection; · Anglican priest and theologian Graeme Garrett reflects on St Augustine of Hippo, and the place of memory in faith; · A special Anglicare Victoria supplement about its work with children and families. 22
