Hymn: Jesus bids us shine Jesus bids us shine with a pure clear light, Like a little candle burning in the night. In this world is darkness, so we must shine. You in your small corner, and I in mine. Jesus bids us shine, first of all for him; Well he sees and knows it, if our light grows dim; He looks down from heaven to see us shine, You in your small corner, and I in mine. Jesus bids us shine then for all around; Many kinds of darkness in the world abound; Sin and want and sorrow; so we must shine, You in your small corner, and I in mine. Jesus bids us shine with a pure clear light, Like a little candle burning in the night. In this world is darkness, so we must shine. You in your small corner, and I in mine.

Greeting:

The Lord be with you. AND ALSO WITH YOU.

(see Ruth 2:4)

Prayer of Preparation: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: God of love and peace, you know what we think and feel. Touch our hearts that our thoughts and actions may be good so that we may love you and honour you, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN. 2

The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’

Kyrie eleison (Kew Setting)

The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. God of mercy and grace, we have sometimes thought wrong things, and done wrong things and we have not always loved each other as we should. We are sorry. Forgive us and help us to love and obey you , through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

3

The Absolution {Celebrant} Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

4

Prayer of the Day Great and loving God, your will for us in your Son Jesus is the peace which the world cannot give, your abiding gift, the Advocate he promised. Calm all troubled hearts, dispel every fear, and keep us steadfast in love and faithful to your word. Grant this through Jesus Christ, the firstborn from the dead, who lives with you now and always in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from CEV First Reading: Revelation 21:22-26

I did not see a temple in the new heaven, for the Lord God All-Powerful and the Lamb were its temple. And the city did not need the sun or the moon. The glory of God was shining on it, and the Lamb was its light. Nations will walk by the light of that city, and kings will bring their riches there. Its gates are always open during the day, and night never comes. The glorious treasures of nations will be brought into the city. Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD

Psalm 67:1-4 1

Let God be gracious to us and bless us: and make his face shine upon us, 2 That your ways may be known on earth: your liberating power among all nations. 3 Let the peoples praise you, O God: let all the peoples praise you. 4 Let the nations be glad and sing: for you judge the peoples with integrity, and govern the nations upon earth.

WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET OUR LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD. The Lord be with you AND ALSO WITH YOU The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint John chapter 14 beginning at the 23rd verse. GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST. Jesus said: If anyone loves me, they will obey me. Then my Father will love them, and we will come to them and live in them. But anyone who doesn’t love me, won’t obey me. What they have heard me say doesn’t really come from me, but from the Father who sent me. I have told you these things while I am still with you. But the Holy Spirit will come and help you, because the Father will send the Spirit to take my place. The Spirit will teach you everything and will remind you of what I said while I was with you. I give you peace, the kind of peace that only I can give. It isn’t like the peace that this world can give. So don’t be worried or afraid. You have already heard me say that I am going and that I will also come back to you. If you really love me, you should be glad that I am going back to the Father, because he is greater than I am. I am telling you this before I leave, so that when it does happen, you will have faith in me.

Gospel Response:

Alleluia

This is the gospel of the Lord PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

(sung by choir and congregation together)

Offertory Hymn: TiS 135 All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small, all things wise and wonderful — the Lord God made them all. 1. The wildflowers in their beauty, the mountain ranges tall, the billabongs and rivers, and friendly birds that call, All things bright and beautiful ... 2. The cold wind in the winter, the bright, life-giving sun, the ripe fruits in the garden — he made them every one. All things bright and beautiful ... 3. The coloured walls of gorges, the gum trees green and tall, the rocks, and pools, and palm trees, the sparkling waterfall, All things bright and beautiful ... 4. The many-coloured corals, the creatures of the sea, of bushland, field or desert, on farms, or roaming free, All things bright and beautiful ... 5. He gave us eyes to see them, and lips that we might tell how great is God Almighty who has made all things well. All things bright and beautiful ... Praise our Maker, praise our Saviour, praise the Lord our everlasting King. Every throne must bow before him, God is Lord of everything! 2. In his hands are the earth’s deep places and the strength of the hills is his; all the sea is the Lord’s, for he made it, by his hands the dry land was formed. 3. Let us worship the Lord our Maker, let us kneel to the Lord our God; for we all are the sheep of his pasture, he will guide us by his powerful hand. 4. Let today be the time when you hear him! May our hearts not be hard or cold, lest we stray from the Lord in rebellion, as his people did in time of old. Richard Thomas Bewes 1934– Words: Richard Bewes
