Hymn: TiS 264

1. Hark! a herald voice is calling: ‘Christ is near,’ it seems to say, ‘cast away the dreams of darkness, waken, children of the day!’ 2. Wakened by the solemn warning let the earth-bound soul arise; Christ, her sun, all sloth dispelling shines upon the morning skies. 3. Lo, the Lamb so long expected comes with pardon now from heav’n; let us meet him with repentance, pray that we may be forgiv’n. 4. So when love comes forth in judgment, debts and doubts and wrongs to clear, faithful may he find his servants watching till the dawn appear. Anon., Latin ?6th cent. tr. Edward Caswall 1814–78 and others

Greeting:

The Lord be with you. AND ALSO WITH YOU.

3

(see Ruth 2:4)

Sentence: Do not fear. The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a warrior who gives victory; he will rejoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his love. Zephaniah 3.16–17

Prayer of Preparation: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’

Kyrie (Dudman)

4

The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Absolution (Celebrant) Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

5

Prayer of the Day Almighty God, you sent your Son into a world where the wheat must be winnowed from the chaff and evil clings even to what is good: let the fire of your Spirit purge us of all corruption, so that, purified, we may wait eagerly for him whose coming is certain, whose Day draws near, your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV) First Reading: Zephaniah 3.14-20 14

Sing aloud, O daughter Zion; shout, O Israel! Rejoice and exult with all your heart, O daughter Jerusalem! 15 The LORD has taken away the judgements against you, he has turned away your enemies. The king of Israel, the LORD, is in your midst; you shall fear disaster no more. 16 On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem: Do not fear, O Zion; do not let your hands grow weak. 17 The LORD, your God, is in your midst, a warrior who gives victory; he will rejoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his love; he will exult over you with loud singing 18 as on a day of festival. I will remove disaster from you, so that you will not bear reproach for it. 19 I will deal with all your oppressors at that time. And I will save the lame and gather the outcast, and I will change their shame into praise and renown in all the earth. 20 At that time I will bring you home, at the time when I gather you; for I will make you renowned and praised among all the peoples of the earth, when I restore your fortunes before your eyes, says the LORD. Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD

Psalm Song of Isaiah ‘Behold, God is my salvation: I will trust and will not be afraid; ‘For the Lord God is my strength and my song: and has become my salvation.’ With joy you will draw water: from the wells of salvation. On that day you will say: ‘Give thanks to the Lord, call upon his name; ‘Make known his deeds among the nations: proclaim that his name is exalted. ‘Sing God’s praises, who has triumphed gloriously: let this be known in all the world. ‘Shout and sing for joy, you that dwell in Zion: for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.’ Isaiah 12.2–6

Second Reading: Philippians 4.4-7 4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. 5Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. 6Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Response:

Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD

Gradual Hymn: TiS 596

1. Fill my whole life, O Lord my God, in every part with praise, that my whole being may proclaim your being and your ways.

4. Fill every part of me with praise: let all my being speak of you and of your love, O Lord, poor though I be and weak.

2. Not for the lip of praise alone nor ev’n the praising heart I ask, but for a life made up of praise in every part:

5. So shall you, Lord, receive from me the praise and glory due; and so shall I begin on earth the song for ever new.

3. praise in the common things of life, its goings out and in; praise in each duty and each deed, however small and mean.

6. So shall no part of day and night from sacredness be free; but with you, Lord, in every step my fellowship will be. Horatius Bonar 1808–89 alt.

We stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel as a sign of respect as we greet our Lord who is present in His Holy Word.

The Lord be with you AND ALSO WITH YOU The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Luke chapter 3 beginning at the 7th verse. GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST. 7 John said to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, ‘You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8Bear fruits worthy of repentance. Do not begin to say to yourselves, “We have Abraham as our ancestor”; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. 9Even now the axe is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.’ 10 And the crowds asked him, ‘What then should we do?’ 11In reply he said to them, ‘Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise.’ 12Even tax-collectors came to be baptized, and they asked him, ‘Teacher, what should we do?’ 13He said to them, ‘Collect no more than the amount prescribed for you.’ 14Soldiers also asked him, ‘And we, what should we do?’ He said to them, ‘Do not extort money from anyone by threats or false accusation, and be satisfied with your wages.’ 15 As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, 16John answered all of them by saying, ‘I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17His winnowing-fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing-floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.’ 18 So, with many other exhortations, he proclaimed the good news to the people. Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord, PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST. 9

SERMON -

(copy of sermon available at back of church)

The Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 10
