Hymn: TiS 145

1. The king of love my shepherd is, whose goodness faileth never; I nothing lack if I am his and he is mine for ever.

4. In death’s dark vale I fear no ill with thee, dear Lord, beside me; thy rod and staff my comfort still, thy cross before to guide me.

2. Where streams of living water flow my ransomed soul he leadeth, and where the verdant pastures grow with food celestial feedeth.

5. Thou spread’st a table in my sight; thy unction grace bestoweth; and O what transport of delight from thy pure chalice floweth!

3. Perverse and foolish oft I strayed, but yet in love he sought me, and on his shoulder gently laid, and home rejoicing brought me.

6. And so through all the length of days thy goodness faileth never: good Shepherd, may I sing thy praise within thy house for ever. Henry Williams Baker 1821–77 based on Psalm 23

Greeting:

The Lord be with you. AND ALSO WITH YOU.

2

(see Ruth 2:4)

Sentence: Be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love, as

Christ loved us and gave himself up for us.

Ephesians 5.1–2

Prayer of Preparation: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ Kyrie eleison

(Kew Setting)

3

The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Absolution (Celebrant) Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

4

Prayer of the Day

Grant, O Lord, that we may see in you the fulfilment of all our need, and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on the true and living bread that you have given us in Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. 5

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV) First Reading: 2 SAMUEL 18.5-9, 14, 31-33 5

The king gave orders to Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying, ‘Deal gently for my sake with the young man Absalom.’ And all the people heard when the king gave orders to all the commanders concerning Absalom. 6So the army went out into the field against Israel; and the battle was fought in the forest of Ephraim. 7The men of Israel were defeated there by the servants of David, and the slaughter there was great on that day, twenty thousand men. 8The battle spread over the face of all the country; and the forest claimed more victims that day than the sword. 9Absalom happened to meet the servants of David. Absalom was riding on his mule, and the mule went under the thick branches of a great oak. His head caught fast in the oak, and he was left hanging between heaven and earth, while the mule that was under him went on. 14Joab said, ‘I will not waste time like this with you.’ He took three spears in his hand, and thrust them into the heart of Absalom, while he was still alive in the oak. 31Then the Cushite came; and the Cushite said, ‘Good tidings for my lord the king! For the Lord has vindicated you this day, delivering you from the power of all who rose up against you.’ 32The king said to the Cushite, ‘Is it well with the young man Absalom?’ The Cushite answered, ‘May the enemies of my lord the king, and all who rise up to do you harm, be like that young man.’ 33 The king was deeply moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept; and as he went, he said, ‘O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! Would that I had died instead of you, O Absalom, my son, my son!’

Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD

Psalm: 130 1 Out of the depths have I called to you, O Lord: Lord, hear my voice; 2 O let your ears consider well: the voice of my supplication. 3 If you, Lord, should note what we do wrong: who then, O Lord, could stand? 4 But there is forgiveness with you: so that you shall be feared. 5 I wait for the Lord, my soul waits for him: and in his word is my hope. 6 My soul looks for the Lord: more than watchmen for the morning, more, I say, than watchmen for the morning. 7 O Israel, trust in the Lord, for with the Lord there is mercy: and with him is ample redemption. 8 He will redeem Israel: from the multitude of their sins. Second Reading: EPHESIANS 4.25 - 5.2 25 So then, putting away falsehood, let all of us speak the truth to our neighbours, for we are members of one another. 26Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27and do not make room for the devil. 28Thieves must give up stealing; rather let them labour and work honestly with their own hands, so as to have something to share with the needy. 29Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only what is useful for building up, as there is need, so that your words may give grace to those who hear. 30And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which you were marked with a seal for the day of redemption. 31Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice, 32and be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you. 1Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children, 2and live in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD

Gradual Hymn: TiS 240 1. All go to God when they are sorely placed: they plead to him for help, for peace, for bread, for mercy, for them sinning, sick or dead. We all do so in faith or unbelief. 2. We go to God when he is sorely placed, find him poor, scorned, unsheltered, without bread, whelmed under weight of evil, weak or dead. We stand by God then, in his hour of grief. 3. God comes to us when we are sorely placed, body and spirit feeds us with his bread. For everyone, he as a man hangs dead: forgiven life he gives all through his death. Dietrich Bonhoeffer 1906–45 tr. Walter Henry Farquharson 1936– alt. Translation © W. H. Farquharson

We stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel as a sign of respect as we greet our Lord who is present in His Holy Word. The Lord be with you AND ALSO WITH YOU The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint John chapter 6 beginning at the 35th verse. GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST. 35

Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. 41Then the Jews began to complain about him because he said, ‘I am the bread that came down from heaven.’ 42They were saying, ‘Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, “I have come down from heaven”?’ 43Jesus answered them, ‘Do not complain among yourselves. 44No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me; and I will raise that person up on the last day. 45It is written in the prophets, “And they shall all be taught by God.” Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me. 46Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father. 47Very truly, I tell you, whoever believes has eternal life. 48I am the bread of life. 49Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. 51I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live for ever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.’ Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord, PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

The Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE GREETING OF PEACE We are the body of Christ. The peace of the Lord be always with you.

{Celebrant}

(all stand) His Spirit is with us. And also with you.

[A greeting of peace is exchanged with those around us]

Offertory Hymn: TiS 503

1. Robe yourself, my soul, in gladness, leave sin’s gloomy den of sadness, come where God in light is waiting, come, begin the celebrating! For the Lord brings me salvation, issues me his invitation; God most holy comes to win me, comes from heaven to live within me.

2. Quickly let me go to meet him, like a bride run out to greet him. With his grace he stands there knocking; let me now, my doors unlocking, open wide the way before him, say to him, as I adore him: Come, dear Lord, let me receive you, do not let me ever leave you.

12

3. How I hunger, loving Saviour, for your goodness and your favour! Often has my heart been burning; for this food have I been yearning, often thirsting for refreshing in this cup of life and blessing, giv’n by him who here invites us, and to God himself unites us.

4. All our thinking, as we ponder, cannot comprehend this wonder, that this living bread is boundless though the people fed are countless, and that Christ his blood is giving with the wine we are receiving. What a myst’ry, of God’s planning, past all human understanding!

5. Jesus, sun of life, my splendour, Jesus, joy, and friend most tender, Jesus, source of all my being, all my thoughts and actions seeing: at your feet I fall before you; make me worthy to enjoy you in this feast that you have given as my food, the food from heaven.

6. Jesus, bread of life, I pray you, let me cheerfully obey you, and accept your invitation for my good, not condemnation. Let me eat this supper, knowing what great love, Lord, you are showing. Now on earth these gifts you give me, as your guest in heaven receive me. Johann Franck 1618–77 tr. Catherine Winkworth 1827–78 rev. in Lutheran Hymnal 1973 and David Arthur Schubert 1942– Translation © D. A. Schubert

Offertory Prayer: Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our offerings for your glory and for the service of your kingdom. BLESSED BE GOD FOR EVER.

Final Hymn: TiS 282 1. The voice of God goes out to all the world; his glory speaks across the universe. The great King’s herald cries from star to star: ‘With power, with justice, he will walk his way.’ 2. The Lord has said, ‘Receive my messenger, my promise to the world, my pledge made flesh, a lamp to every nation, light from light’: with power, with justice, he will walk his way. 4. Anointed with the Spirit and with power, he comes to crown with comfort all the weak, to show the face of justice to the poor: with power, with justice, he will walk his way. 5.
