Prayer of Preparation: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV) First Reading: 1 Samuel 17.57-18.9 57

On David’s return from killing the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul, with the head of the Philistine in his hand.58Saul said to him, ‘Whose son are you, young man?’ And David answered, ‘I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.’

18 1When David had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was bound to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. 2Saul took him that day and would not let him return to his father’s house. 3Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul. 4Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that he was wearing, and gave it to David, and his armour, and even his sword and his bow and his belt. 5David went out and was successful wherever Saul sent him; as a result, Saul set him over the army. And all the people, even the servants of Saul, approved.

6 As they were coming home, when David returned from killing the Philistine, the women came out of all the towns of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul, with tambourines, with songs of joy, and with musical instruments. 7And the women sang to one another as they made merry, ‘Saul has killed his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.’

8 Saul was very angry, for this saying displeased him. He said, ‘They have ascribed to David tens of thousands, and to me they have ascribed thousands; what more can he have but the kingdom?’ 9So Saul eyed David from that day on.

Second Reading: 2 CORINTHIANS 6.1-13 1

As we work together with him, we urge you also not to accept the grace of God in vain. 2For he says, ‘At an acceptable time I have listened to you, and on a day of salvation I have helped you.’ See, now is the acceptable time; see, now is the day of salvation! 3We are putting no obstacle in anyone’s way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, 4but as servants of God we have commended ourselves in every way: through great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, 5beatings, imprisonments, riots, labours, sleepless nights, hunger; 6by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, holiness of spirit, genuine love, 7truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; 8in honour and dishonour, in ill repute and good repute. Other boats were with him. 37A great gale arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. 38But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, ‘Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?’ 39He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, ‘Peace! The Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church.

We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

We give thanks for the life of Bill Hardman as we uphold him to your loving mercy, and we pray for all who mourn his death.

We remember before God with thanksgiving the lives of Joan Hogg (2007) and Bob Owen (2009), as we come to the anniversary of their entry into your nearer presence.

Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers.

Grant that what we have asked in faith We may by your grace receive, Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Jesus said: A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you.

John 13.34 [Let us pray] We do not presume to come to your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your manifold and great mercies.

We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table.

But you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy.

Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness.

Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins.

Father, forgive us.

Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Come let us take this holy sacrament of the body and blood of Christ in remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving.

Baptised Christians who receive communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us.

Communion wine may be received: (a) from the common cup from the first of the two Eucharistic Assistants. (b) by intinction from the second of the Eucharistic Assistants where a small part of the wafer is carefully dipped in the wine, or (c) from an individual glass on request from the first Eucharistic Assistant.

Or you may choose to receive the wafer only (Communion in one kind).

THE SENDING OUT OF GOD'S PEOPLE Post Communion Prayer Prayer of self-offering Father, we offer ourselves to you as a living sacrifice through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. AMEN

Building Project: A report on the current position is available at the back of church.

Food Bank: The Food Bank Centre in Footscray that provides the bulk of the emergency food for relief centres such as Anglicare's Mission House will be closed for two weeks in early July to install new computer systems and the training of staff. This is always a time of high demand for food at Mission House as clients need to apply any spare cash to paying heating bills. to help fill the gap it would be appreciated if parishioners could increase their giving of food (or cash in lieu) at this time or at least bring forward their normal giving until the bulk supplies resume from Foodbank. The following items are especially popular and in current lowish supply: Breakfast cereal, tins of tuna, biscuits of all sorts, tea bags and pasta sauce 13
