1. ‘Take up your cross,’ the Saviour said, ‘if you would my disciple be; take up your cross with willing heart and humbly follow after me.’ 2. Take up your cross; let not its weight fill your weak spirit with alarm; his strength shall bear your spirit up and brace your heart and nerve your arm.

Prayer of Preparation: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: God of love and peace, you know what we think and feel. Touch our hearts that our thoughts and actions may be good so that we may love you and honour you, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN.

First Reading: Genesis 17:1-7 (CEV) Abram was ninety-nine years old when the Lord appeared to him againa and said, “I am God All-Powerful. If you obey me and always do right, I will keep my solemn promise to you and give you more descendants than can be counted.” Abram bowed with his face to the ground, and God said: I promis that you will be the father of many nations. That’s why I now change your name from Abram to Abraham. I will give you a lot of descendants, and in the future they will become great nations. Some of them will even be kings. The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Mark chapter 8 beginning at the 34th verse. GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST. Jesus told the crowd and the disciples to come closer, and he said: If any of you want to be my followers, you must forget about yourself. You must take up your cross and follow me. If you want to save your life, you will destroy it. But if you give up your life for me and for the good news, you will save it. What will you gain, if you own the whole world but destroy yourself? Come let us take this holy sacrament of the body and blood of Christ in remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving.
Baptised Christians who receive communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. Communion wine may be received: (a) from the common cup from the first of the two Eucharistic Assistants. (b) by intinction from the second of the Eucharistic Assistants where a small part of the wafer is carefully dipped in the wine, or (c) from an individual glass on request from the first Eucharistic Assistant. Or you may choose to receive the wafer only (Communion in one kind).
