Year 13 Prom

Last Friday the Year 13 students celebrated their Leaver's Ball at De Vere Beaumont Hotel after their final exams. The students were pleased to celebrate and reflect upon the end of a chapter in their lives and the start of a new one.

Mr Alford and Mr McCarey both gave speeches, imparting words of wisdom and wishing them well in the future.

Thank you to the Year 13 students who arranged it, as well as Mrs Stokes and Mrs Smith for all the administrative work behind the scenes, Mr Slyper for the photography and all the teachers that attended to celebrate their special day.

FROM THE SCIENCE DEPT

Year 12 Nuclear Physics trip On Thursday 27th June, Jack, Ollie, Christian, Jackie, Shani, Asher, Baba and Hector attended the University of Surrey’s Nuclear Physics Masterclass.

They were presented with two interesting lectures on radioactivity and nuclear physics, collected and analysed some Beta+ and Beta- decay data from a copper sample, and took part in an interactive simulation using Lego. Three random, but scientifically important and interesting facts that stood out from the afternoon’s pop-quiz are that there are about 120 different elements discovered, of which there are about 3000 different isotopes in total.

About 150 of these were discovered by research/ teaching staff at the University of Surrey - that’s 5% of the atomic discoveries made world-wide … ever.

After some challenging Maths applications for decay equations were mastered, we ended the afternoon with chocolate and vanilla ice cream, made in the Physics lab in front of us, using liquid nitrogen. A totally cool and fitting way to end the fairly hot but interesting day out.

Eton College Military Tattoo Tabitha Clarke in Year 11 took part in the Eton College CCF Tattoo on Friday 14th June making history as the first female student in the tattoo since the coup was founded in 1860. She was not only the first ever female to be on parade with Eton College boys but proudly wore the cap badge as the only Holyport College member there, committing to rehearsals alongside her exams.

The Honorary Colonel Major General B Bathurst CBE inspected students with the Commanding Officer Major J Osborne and Regimental Sergeant Major J Cole. Major General Bathurst mentioned the links between both schools and the historical introduction of women to Eton CCF this year. Likewise the Cadet Expansion funding from the MOD has allowed Miss Loudoun and Miss Treacy to begin their military training as officers. Second Lieutenant K Loudoun and Under Officer K Treacy helped usher the event and proudly watched Tabitha doing drill across the parade square. Congratulations to Cdt W02 M Gill and Cdt WO2 H Smyth-Osbourne for receiving The Sword of Honour.

Music was performed by: The Eton College Wind Band, Director of Music Mr David Gordon-Schute, The Eton College Pipes and Drums, Pipe Major Rex Benson and The Budles of The Rifles, Senior Bugle Major Topp.

Arts Week 2019 At its height, from around 1660–1820, the Grand Tour was considered to be the best way to complete a gentleman’s education. After leaving school or university, young noblemen from northern Europe left for France to start the tour. Tours often took over two years to complete.

After acquiring a coach in Calais, they would ride on to Paris – their first major stop. From there they would head south to Italy or Spain, carting all their possessions and servants with them.

Their most popular destinations were the great towns and cities of the Renaissance, along with the remains of ancient Roman and Greek civilisation. (National Gallery, 2019).

Arts Week activities: ALL Yr7-10 : Sports day flag painting All students will have a 'Grand Tour' themed lesson across all subject areas during Arts week.

All students are welcome to help the Science department planting vegetables with thanks to money kindly donated by parents to the school. Personal Art Equipment—GCSE Sept 2019 start We advise every GCSE Art Student to invest in an Art Pack which we can sell to students via ParentPay. We have set this up so that both day and boarders can easily get the materials they need to do their prep.

This gives them the majority of items they need for the year (we have deliberately left out ‘paint’ this year as some students wish to use those in departments or their sibling’s or get their own as an additional item).

We will also have some spare packs for Year 7-9 students who might wish to buy one for their own personal use.

Co curricular Last week in co curricular club ‘Countries of the World’ Zsofia Olah and Natasha Sharma ran a UN style conference with some Year 7 and 8 students. Leading up to the co curricular the students had to research their given country (from America to Iceland) and any issues and conflict that country had. They then brought this research with them to the conference and it was very clear that we have some natural leaders amongst our cohort.

Boulter’s to Bray Swim Saturday 6th July is the annual Boulter’s to Bray Swim in the Thames at Maidenhead. Entries are still open for the Boulter’s Mile (1.4km) and the main swim (2.8km). There will be a number of staff both volunteering and swimming, it would be great to see some students and parents joining in too! http://boulterstobrayswim.org/

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Good luck to Year 9 students who are completing their Bronze DofE assessment expedition this weekend. You might spy them if you’re in the Lane End, Marlow or Pinkneys Green areas!

All Bronze and SIlver students need to get their volunteering, skill and sports sections signed off asap please, Mrs Day would like more green ticks on edofe!

GCSE French and Spanish students: The MFL department recommends the following Edexcel revision books to help you revise over the summer and during Year 11! They range from revision workbooks to specific target 5 and 9 books and are available on Amazon!

A reminder that our annual Sports Awards Dinner is taking place next Saturday 6th July. Pupils need to arrive from 6pm, and be picked up promptly at 9:30pm. If your child has any dietary requirements that you haven't made us aware of by returning the slip, please email Miss Gallop ASAP. The dress code is formal; trousers and a shirt or suit, and dresses or suitable alternatives please. We are lucky enough to have a special (Olympian!) guest to give a talk and present the awards, we cannot wait to celebrate all of our achievements in sport this year and have a fun packed evening!
