Who Is Blessed Marie-Rose?

Marie-Rose

(b. 1811, d. 1849) was a woman of passion, vision, and mission. Born and raised in Quebec, Canada, Eulalie-Melanie Durocher knew from an early age God’s faithful love. She lived her younger years in St. Antoine, a peaceful village overlooking the Richelieu River. Ardent and strong-willed as a child, Eulalie was blessed with the wisdom and guidance of a loving family who carefully and patiently channeled her energies.

Circumstances changed her teenage years with the death of her mother. Persuaded by her brother, pastor of a church in a neighboring village, she left the family home and moved to Beloeil where she participated in the life of the parish. Living simply and attending to the needs of those around her, she sought to make life better for others, especially the poor. In her free time, she gathered young women together in prayer and service. Her charity led her to seek out and serve others. This time provided her the opportunity to know the spiritual, social, and educational needs of the people. Taking root in her heart was the dream of living for God and witnessing the Gospel.

As experience deepened the gifts of the Spirit within her, maturing her natural ability of leadership, Eulalie heard God’s call resounding in her heart and responded in faith, risking everything for God. Her gifts were also noticed by Ignatius Bourget, Bishop of Longueuil, who in 1843 asked Eulalie and her companion Melodie Dufresne to travel to a small school in the village of Longueuil, to found a new religious teaching community. Motivated by the scripture passage, “I have come to cast fire on

the earth and would that it were already kindled” (Luke 12:49), Blessed Marie-Rose sought to respond to the great need for her time for schools to educate young girls. Arriving on October 28, 1843, she, along with Melodie and a teacher, Henriette Cere, established a new community of women religious, the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. They began educating the poor, especially young women in rural areas who had no opportunity for education.

Eulalie was given the name Mother Marie-Rose, as she was also named the first superior of the congregation. Under her leadership, the new congregation flourished with other women who were called to service and inspired by her example, even through seemingly insurmountable difficulties of poverty, hostility, and misunderstandings. Within six short years, the community increased to forty-four sisters ministering in three schools.

Marie-Rose Durocher spent her life lighting the fire of God’s love in the minds and hearts of those who try to know and love God. As you use this reflection journal to process your mission experiences and to learn more about her life and charism in her Sisters, note in your heart what gifts she inspires in you. As you continue to carry out Mother Marie-Rose’s charity by seeking out and serving others, may her example be a guide to you, in realizing your own gifts for mission. e

Spiritual Preparation I.

Service to the Poor & Marginalized

From Marie-Rose’s Biography:

“Be confident that the one who protects you will never abandon you.”

With her open, friendly attitude, Mother Marie-Rose developed at Longueuil Convent and at the day school, an affectionate simplicity between educators and pupils. By words like “sister” and “children”, she created a family atmosphere where life was good.

She was most solicitous about the destitute, the very poor, the very young. When she took in three little Irish immigrants, she even asked the wealthier girls to share their clothing with the newcomers.

She fixed the hair of a little girl who was unable to do it herself; she asked the boarders to put candy aside for the poor children. Through bilingualism, she promoted good relations between the Frenchspeaking and English-speaking pupils. (Laberge, p. 43)

Reflection:

Sometimes our egos cause us to see others as objects to be used, possessed, or manipulated; however, as we grow up, we begin to see others as subjects, or persons to whom we respond and serve. Blessed Marie-Rose’s love and concern for people was rooted in her understanding of loving her neighbor as herself—as persons, brothers and sisters in Christ. Identifying with others and their experiences, MarieRose saw them as humans with their own thoughts, fears, and needs.

Jesus too treated everyone as his brothers and sisters because as the Son of God, he understood God the Father is one with all human beings; therefore, we are part of one interconnected human family. In his book Jesus Today Albert Nolan writes, “When you can recognize your neighbor as your own flesh and blood, it becomes possible to love him or her spontaneously, no matter who that person is or what she may have done. It becomes possible to say with Jesus, ‘Whatever you do to the least of these my brothers and sisters, my family, you do to me.’” (162) Responding to the “least” of God’s people is central to the SNJM core value Service to the Poor and Marginalized. This core value is about reaching out and responding to people who are impoverished, abandoned, or living at the fringes of society.

When have you identified with persons who are poor or marginalized? (Or, proverbially, when have you put yourself in another’s shoes?) As you prepare to serve others during

The Rose Project, take time to think: What must it feel like to be where they are? What does the world look like from their perspective?

To follow Jesus and to follow Blessed Marie-Rose in service to the poor and marginalized requires us to identify with all our brothers and sisters, and to serve them. In practice, our service might be what we call “works of mercy�: feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, welcome the stranger, clothe the naked, care for the sick, and visit those who are in prison. Or, our service may call us to new, creative ways of responding. e

What is Mission?

From Marie-Rose’s Biography:

“Be courageous.

If we work well in this life, we will have all eternity in which to rest.”

A woman of caliber and apostolic creativity, Marie-Rose Durocher had at the same time rare humility and great simplicity. After God, the focus of her activity was the “person”. Her whole mission as a lay person and as a religious would be spent in education, in concern for helping people to grow, develop, and reach fulfillment…

All facets of a person’s development interested her; this would become the most important mission of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. Through her word and example, she passed on this message. Her concern for young people and adults, especially the very poor; her openness to those around her and to other cultures, to a balanced life, to religion, to work, and to instruction prove it eloquently. Is this not what today’s world is looking for in its search for lasting values? (pp. 54-55)

Reflection:

Blessed Marie-Rose’s personal passion for serving and helping people develop their full human potential helped shape the mission of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, the founders of our school. Oftentimes, the mission, or main purpose for which an organization exists originates in the vision and charism of the founder.

For the Sisters the Holy Names, their mission and vision continues to be carried out not only by sisters, but associates and lay partners—including AHN faculty, staff, and students—“who are dedicated to the full development of the human person through education, social justice, contemplation, and the arts.” (from SNJM mission statement).

Blessed Marie-Rose’s example invites us to consider how we put our faith, values, and vision into action for the betterment of our world. e

Living out the Name by which You Are Called From Marie-Rose’s Biography:

In a letter to her sister, the religious, Sister Marie-Rose shared with her the personal mission she discovered in her new name: “They gave me the name Marie-Rose; may I be a rose whose fragrance is pleasing to Jesus Christ; you will help me by your prayers to accomplish whatever obligations this mysterious name imposes on me.” (p.28)

What Is the Charism of Blessed Marie-Rose?

From Marie-Rose’s Biography:

In a word, we can say that Eulalie had become a woman of strong, humble, radiant hope; a woman whose charity was strong in trial, joyous, and enthusiastic. Already it was evidence that she centered her spirituality on the Eucharist, Mary, the Sacred Heart, and the Church. She now seemed ready to undertake the work for which God had destined her. (p. 21)

Reflection:

Charism is the distinctive spirit which characterizes the lives and ministries of a religious congregation. Charism is a gift that is meant to be shared. The Sisters of the Holy Names, their associates, and their partners in mission, who embody the charism today, continue to shape the vision and mission of the congregation.

For Blessed Marie-Rose, the scripture passage, “I have come to cast fire upon the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled” (Luke 12:49), inspired her spirit and continues to inspire and challenge those who live her charism. Fire symbolizes the intensity of love. Like a consuming fire, God’s love shines in each of us to enlighten, warm, and enliven those we meet on our path. Jesus came to bring fire upon the earth so that love may not be hidden in any corner but rather proclaimed to the world. “To cast fire on earth” means to spread the energy of the Good News of Jesus Christ, to be on fire to build the Reign of God and all that entails for the perfect world where justice and equality are alive.

How did Blessed Marie-Rose live out this Gospel passage?

Here are a few examples that shaped her charism: • When she was living in her brother’s rectory she started an organization where women gathered for prayer and decided together which needs in the area were most urgent and about which they might take action.

• She responded to the call to begin a teaching community to educate even those who could not afford an education– and develop their full human potential.

• She was a devoted member of the Church but wise enough to recognize and resist naysayers. e (see SNJM Quick Reference Guide for additional examples)

Spiritual Preparation V.

Justice & Charity: Two Feet of Love in Action

From Marie-Rose’s Biography:

“Let us extend a hand to one another, to help surmount the

difficulties

which occur.”

- Blessed Marie-Rose

About 1835, the Richelieu region lived through a difficult period because of crop failure. Eulalie visited families, brought food, and encouraged the most destitute. She involved children and young women in this mission. She trained nurses’ aides, who went to help people living on the country roads of the parish. It was then that concrete signs of her zeal and concerted action could be seen. She was unstinting in the material, human, and spiritual help that she dispensed to others. (p. 14)

Reflection:

Who are our neighbors? For Eulalie Durocher, it was the families in the region where she lived. In the Gospels, Jesus answers the question with the parable of the Good Samaritan—the beaten man on the road who had no one else to care for him. Pope Benedict XVI tells us that the “extraordinary force” of love should propel us, as disciples of Christ, to action on behalf of such neighbors (Caritas in Veritate, no. 1).

What should our loving action look like? The Catholic tradition recognizes two types of necessary responses that we call the Two Feet of Love in Action: two distinct, but complementary, ways we can put the Gospel in action in response to God’s love: social justice and charitable works.

Social justice means praying and working for long-term solutions to the root causes of problems in our community and the world. We step with the social justice foot through changing laws that reform social structures that contribute to suffering and injustice. We step with this foot through advocating for just public policies. We step with this foot by helping people who are economically poor not only to survive, but also to escape poverty—even to empower them to transform their communities. Stepping with social justice also means we are working to help transform the human community so that it better reflects the image of Christ, the most perfect example of love (Catechism, no. 1877).

Charitable works are our “response to immediate needs and specific situations: feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, caring for and healing the sick, visiting those in prison, etc.”

(Deus Caritas Est, no. 31). We step with the charitable works foot when we work to aid or assist others both locally and

globally to meet their immediate, short-term needs. Examples include engaging in direct service or providing food, clothing, shelter, or monetary assistance to help those in need.

During The Rose Project, we generally focus on charity. Presence & Action

From Marie-Rose’s Biography:

Attentive to the needs that turned up everywhere, without neglecting her work at the rectory, Eulalie proved to be the good genie of the parish. She felt that the way to get to know and appreciate others was to celebrate with them. (p. 17)

A woman whose name was Martha welcomed him. She had a sister named Mary [who] sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak. Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me.”

The Lord said to her in reply, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing.

Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.”

Reflection:

Blessed Marie-Rose’s personal passion for serving and Martha and Mary model two forms of service both of which Eulalie lived out in her daily life. Martha models the servant, the doer whose concern is providing hospitality, taking care of the most basic needs of preparing and serving a meal.

This is Martha’s form of service; it is an expression of love and care. Martha’s careful attention to unmet needs is a gift we will exercise many times this week, as we are called to give careful attention to the projects that we will be doing.

We too—with adrenaline and joy rather than anxiety—will be charged with tasks; however, may it not be a burden, but work to be done joyfully and lovingly.

Mary, on the other hand, knew not to let the tasks become a burden; in her heart, she knew that the time to be with someone, to be totally present (without the distraction of a tech device, or the mental distractions of thinking about our own wants and needs) was a form of love and service too.

Thus, presence is another form of service; it is a challenge and grace to be totally present to someone. We are called to be open to learn about someone else’s story, while taking the risk to share parts of our own. Life is too short not to get to know one another through our stories, discovering the journey we all share. e

Love for the Names of Jesus & Mary

From Marie-Rose’s Biography:

“I leave you now in the peace of the Lord and under the auspices of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary.”

- Blessed Marie-Rose

Where did this early pastoral animator find her dynamism and creativity? In the very heart of her God and in the Scripture that she prayed early in the morning, throughout the day, and even at night, especially on the eve of important feasts. Many people imitated Eulalie after having seen her pray in church, her face radiant in meeting God. Even the children would tiptoe into church after school to watch her pray. They would marvel at the altar decorations created by one who found nothing beautiful enough for God and the Blessed Virgin. (p. 15)

Reflection:

For Blessed Marie-Rose, prayer could be described as: looking at God with the heart, being attentive to the mystery of God in oneself, in others, and in events; and, discovering God’s loving presence as revealed in the Names of Jesus of Mary. Marie-Rose Durocher passed on to us a special devotion towards the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary.

According to biblical tradition, to honor someone’s name is to honor that person. In Jesus’ time, people believed that a person whose name was spoken was actually present to one speaking the name with reverence and love. This belief also was held by the early Christians, who during prayer synchronized their breathing with the repeated invocation to the Holy Name of Jesus. This prayer resonated in the heart of Mother Marie-Rose. During her final illness, the Sisters often heard her repeating the name of Jesus.

Invoking the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary is a simple prayer with a great source of spiritual strength. It reminds us of God’s loving guidance and encouragement as we strive to live our discipleship. It inspires us to glorify Mary by striving to be as faithful as she was to her call and purpose. It inspires us to glorify Jesus by striving to be as courageously loving as he was in his encounters with others.

For your prayer sit in a comfortable place, slow down and deepen your breathing as you repeat one of the following prayers used by Blessed Marie-Rose and the Sisters.

Spiritual Preparation VIII.

The Virtue of Fortitude

From Marie-Rose’s Biography:

[Opening a new parish school] The schedule for one day and its exact organization would surprise anyone today. Rising at 4:30 a.m., the future religious met together for prayer at 5 o’clock….

At a quarter to seven, they had breakfast, followed by cleaning of the house, and at eight o’clock, sisters and pupils were ready to start class. Various activities made up the day: teaching, prayer, meals, recreation, conferences, study and class preparation. At nine o’clock, the sisters climbed a ladder to the space above the attic to get their hidden mattresses and other belongings and bring them down to their bedroom under the eaves for a well-earned rest. They had tried to be present to God and attentive to others for sixteen consecutive hours. Despite daily renunciations, the new religious family and its school lived and worked in a joyous atmosphere. (p.

Reflection:

The virtue of fortitude possessed by Mother Marie-Rose and the early sisters enabled them to push themselves to do inconvenient, yet necessary undertakings in order to enact their mission of educating children. They were motivated by the desire to cast the fire of God’s love and by the notion that their efforts followed the call of the Gospel, in concert with Jesus’ mission.

Fortitude is an acquired habit of showing strength or courage and constancy in the pursuit of the good, especially in times of difficulty. It can be described by such words as persistence, determination, ‘hanging in there’, or a resolved mind or spirit in the daily challenges of life. We need fortitude to overcome fear of pain, of loss, of what people will think or say, and the displeasure of friends. It even disposes one to selfless acts in defense of a just cause.

The only way to develop the human virtue fortitude is by practice and by asking for the help of God’s grace. Through facing setbacks, failures, and misunderstandings, we become more persistent in pursuing the good and accomplishing the vision and mission we have set for ourselves. Fortitude empowers us to persevere in following in the footsteps of Jesus and Blessed Marie-Rose, in living the Gospel, and in being that burning light that brings charity and justice to our world. e

The rose Project Day One

The Gift of Hospitality

From Marie-Rose’s Biography:

The young girl took charge of the household, a task which Mr. Durocher greatly appreciated. This experience was really another school of formation for Eulalie, where she developed her many talents, her attention to people, and her spirit of discernment on the human and spiritual level. She was the one who now prepared big family meals as well as daily ones. Her “gentle mother” had initiated her to everything by word and example. (p. 13)

Reflection:

While in elementary school, I remember hearing about Eulalie Durocher, Mother Marie-Rose, and her gift of hospitality. She lived in a home where genuine hospitality was an everyday occurrence. Through the years her gift and skills of hospitality grew, developed, strengthened and spread to others who imitated her. Hospitality is part of who she is.

The rose Project Day Two

The Gift of Courage

From Marie-Rose’s Biography:

The chronicles mention that few parishioners attended the blessing of the convent. Were there still some opposed to the project or doubtful of [the boarding and day school’s] success? The sisters thought so, but they entrusted themselves to Providence and prepared to move in the days that followed…

In September, they welcomed thirty-three boarders and eight day pupils at the new convent in Longueuil. Such a registration increased the future sisters’ energy tenfold. (pp. 29-30)

Reflection:

As someone who was educated by the Sisters of the Holy Names from first grade through twelfth grade, I have been inspired by Blessed Marie-Rose’s fidelity, her devotion to Jesus and Mary, her love of children, and her courage to live out her call to share God’s love with all with whom she came in contact. The more I learn about her life and her passion for education in the faith, the more I am in awe of the way she handled challenging situations. Mother Marie-Rose’s willingness and ability to find ways to help the poor, to provide education for young women, and to find solutions to conflicts and overcome obstacles from some members of the priesthood are benchmarks for those of us who follow in her footsteps.

At one point in my life I was asked by the Pastor of the Parish where I was employed to assist couples experiencing conflict in their marriages and also to support couples who had divorced and were seeking annulments. I was supported in this ministry by the fact that I had received training from courses I was able to take in a Catholic college. After I had been in this ministry for several years a priest new to our Diocese challenged my Pastor, the person who saw to it that I had the training and skills needed for this particular call, and said that a woman should not be handling this important work. I had a choice to become angry, to give up, or to find a way to answer the call to help couples in need. I prayed to Blessed Marie-Rose for inspiration and courage, knowing that my Pastor needed and wanted me to continue what I was doing.

After a time of prayer and discernment I decided to make an appointment with the Bishop of our Diocese. I was confident

that whatever the Bishop would advise me to do would be what God’s plan was. I knew the conversation could go either way and I asked God and Blessed Marie-Rose for the courage to accept the Bishop’s advice. Our meeting was very productive since both of us exchanged very honest feelings.

When we had finished, the Bishop told me to continue my ministry with couples and those going through a divorce since I was filling a need in the church and the Diocese. The Bishop blessed me and thanked me for meeting with him.

The Gift of Humility

From Marie-Rose’s Biography:

Eulalie was asked to help her brother, Father Theophile… She discovered there many opportunities to practice her apostolic zeal, to share the riches of her heart and her experience. As housekeeper of the Beloeil rectory, she carried out her duties with special tact, since the former housekeepers were still working there. By dint of humility, she gained their friendship. To their criticism and their meanness, she answered with kindness and thoughtful attention. (p. 14)

Reflection:

God gifted Blessed Marie-Rose with many strengths, and she accepted these as gifts from God to be used for the good of others. When Blessed Marie lived at her brother’s rectory in Beloeil, she helped in any way she could, acting as housekeeper, secretary; arranging flowers for the altar in church, bringing food to needy families, and even starting a sodality for the young girls of the parish. The priest in the diocese respected Blessed Marie-Rose and when they visited her brother, she sat at the table with them discussing the religious issues of the day. She also left that table, went into the kitchen, and cleaned up.

Humility is not denying we have skills. Humility is knowing our skills are gifts from God to be shared with others. When I became principal, I tried to put the children’s and teachers’ needs first. At any school function I would be visible before— helping to set up, during—acting my leadership role, and after—staying and helping with cleanup. I accepted my gift of leadership, but I did not forget to lend a hand where needed. e- Sister Ann Regan, SNJM, Tampa, Florida

The Gift of Encouragement

From Marie-Rose’s Biography:

From the first meeting with her, people were impressed by her warm welcome and the depth of her unforgettable look. If a candidate came to see her, she gave her all her kindly but firm attention. Once, to rid a candidate of persistent loneliness, Mother Marie-Rose allowed her to have the horse that she had missed so much to come visit for a few days. The joy of reunion was mutual, it seemed. “Whatever affects the good of your soul gives me real pleasure.” (ASNJM, G. 1.⅓,10 qtd. in Laberge, p. 45)

Reflection:

Teaching called, even before God’s calling to religious life and to the Sisters of the Holy Names (it may be genetic, as I come from a long line of educators). My family moved some when I was in early grades. School was not all that exciting.

Then came fourth grade at Academy of the Holy Names, everything changed. I felt connected, loved, respected, appreciated, and understood. I came to know Blessed Marie-Rose, even before the Church called her “Blessed”. I belonged.

Later, in seventh grade, I had the first clear call in my heart, a call to religious life, a call to the SNJMs. Of course, I went through years of pushing it away; however, in the end the call was answered. Trying to select one Blessed Marie-Rose quality is not easy, but for me, it is: ENCOURAGING. The Gift of Charity

From Marie-Rose’s Biography:

She knew how to reserve herself in times of silence and solitude, hours to visit the poor, the sick, and friends. Always ready to help out, she burned with the fire of charity for whoever approached her.

What kindness she showed to sick priests or those in need of support to persevere in their vocation! She manifested special concern for the moral and spiritual well-being of young candidates. “I do not know anyone more capable of leading others to perfection,” said Father Jacques Telmon, Eulalie’s spiritual director. She also found a holy emulation in sharing with her friend, Melodie Dufresne. (pp.

20-21)

Reflection:

Eulalie Durocher was a woman with a vision who “bloomed where she was planted”. By God’s design she spent twelve years in service to God’s people in a parish community.

Prayer and contemplation nourished her spirit and energized her with the audacity and creativity to venture on a journey that God had already planned for her.

In addition to her household duties in the rectory at Beloeil, she was actively engaged in a ministry of presence that permeated the entire parish. Her service was truly “love made visible” and with courage and quiet determination she reached out to those in need, inspiring others to do the same.

The lack of education was a main concern and she worked diligently with young girls, believing that if she helped them, in time their families, homes and even society would be transformed. She taught them to see that the time spent with God in prayer, naturally flowed into their time in serving others.

Eulalie had a listening presence that was quiet, attentive and caring and a prayerful presence that reflected two aspects of a single love; a love of God that drew her to prayer and a love of God that led to service.

Eulalie Durocher, our Blessed Marie-Rose, has influenced my ministry over the years. She was a cook and housekeeper, a sacristan, a teacher, a catechist, a pastoral minister, a mentor, a leader, a witness. She was a woman of Faith and had a deep relationship with her God. I draw strength from reflecting

The Gift of Play

From Marie-Rose’s Biography:

Having a cheerful temperament, Eulalie grew up surrounded by the love of the whole family. She was a radiant, affectionate child. Her big brothers never missed a chance to spoil her a little. In winter, what nice sleigh rides Calixte would give his little sister, who would often impose her own wishes as to the speed, place and number of rounds... Eulalie burst with enthusiasm especially at play, where she exhibited her sheer joy to be alive. (p. 7)

Eulalie enjoyed riding her horse, Caesar, when she worked in her brother’s parish. That could be called “play with a purpose”. As she rode around the countryside, she took note of which families needed help and what help they needed.

This has been a great example for me.

When I was teaching, I would create classroom projects that injected a “fun” element. I once asked an Old Testament class to choose one of the Patriarchs and then develop a record album of songs that illustrated his life. I expected a playlist with an explanation of their choices. I received CDs with the songs, cover art, liner notes and the explanation of their choices. The Gift of Discernment

From Marie-Rose’s Biography:

Entries were numerous during the first six years of the Congregation. The Council welcomed seventy-six young women, forty-four whom persevered… Mother Marie-Rose, mistress of formation, revealed in this crucial role some of her most beautiful virtues: justice, charity, and a sense of discernment. With what wisdom, she knew how to remind them that, although the call comes from God, the response had to come from the one called. She added that listening and prayer were two paths that favored the blossoming of a vocation. (pp. 44-45)

Reflection:

St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit Fathers, taught the importance of discernment in our spiritual lives.

He reminds us of the need to pray to the Holy Spirit and reflect as we struggle each day between good and evil choices. Ignatius’ spiritual exercises teach us to pray the daily examen, and cultivate a habit of reflective awareness of the presence of God. In the letters of Blessed Marie-Rose, she always discerned in prayer with the Sisters before making important decisions.

In one event, a sister from another religious order wished to enter the Sisters of the Holy Names. In response to the sister, Marie-Rose wrote: “Since the step you are considering must be inspired by God, I urge you to pray to Our Lord, rather, let us pray together that He Himself will deign to aid and guide you” (Longueuil, 1847).

In my own choosing to be a Sister of the Holy Names, I was inspired by the joy of the Sisters. They followed all of our sports in the school gym and encouraged us in countless ways. Sister Ellen Mary, my sophomore teacher, taught religion with the book Jesus by Russell. Sister showed us the real Jesus, instead of “good ole plastic Jesus”.
