As we move through 2020, one thing is abundantly clear: this has been a year like no other. However, as you can see from the excerpt from the Academy Chronicles above, it’s not the first time the Academy has dealt with a deadly pandemic.

In 1918, the Academy shut its doors when schools were ordered to close. We were compelled to do the same in March. Within a few days, we began a distance-learning program for all our students from pre-K through 12th grade. Succeeding as well as we did is a testament to the fine work of our teachers and administrators, the resilience of our students, and the unwavering support of our parents. It wasn’t always easy, and not so pretty at times, but we carried it off as well as anyone.

Throughout the summer, we spent countless hours busily preparing for the start of what will be as challenging a year as any since 1918. In that year, the schools reopened for good after a few months.

In August, we opened our doors with approximately 85% of our students learning on campus. Only time and the course of the virus will determine whether we can keep them open.

Trying to sift through the recommendations from the CDC, the state and local governments regarding the protocols and procedures to put into place has been challenging, to say the least. It is clear that our parents wanted their children to return to school; 88% of them opted for in-person instruction.

This presents us with the challenge of keeping our students and their teachers safe. Given the number

of people in our building at any time, masks are mandatory for everyone. While we are working hard to provide social distancing, we understand that it will be difficult at times. Mask-wearing will be the key to our success. In addition, we have implemented enhanced cleaning and sanitizing protocols to create as safe an environment as we possibly can.

A MONTH OR SO AFTER THE OCTOBER STATEMENT ABOVE, WE FIND THE FOLLOWING ENTRY IN THE CHRONICLES:

“The dread disease has not passed us by.

Although every precaution was taken, already five of our boarders are stricken with the malady and owing to our limited space two others have been sent to a local hospital. We do not anticipate any fatalities as all are doing very well.”

As in 1918, we have taken every precaution possible while reopening the school, and even with new construction and renovations completed over the past several years, space remains limited as our school enrollment remains at capacity. We hope and pray that we come through this recent pandemic as those before us did in 1918, but it will take more than prayer to make it happen. It will take all of us—teachers, staff, students and parents—working together to the best of our ability to ensure we come through this difficult time with the most positive outcome possible.

THE ACADEMY’S RAPID SHIFT TO

Virtual Schooling

On Friday, March 13, Academy students walked the halls for the final time of the 2019-2020 school year. Only four days later, teachers and students were introduced to full-time virtual learning, not knowing that it would last for the remainder of the school year. Most did not expect this drastic change, but Academy administration and teachers immediately jumped into action.

make Wednesdays “flex days.” Students attended their regularly scheduled classes online from 9 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. (with an hour break for lunch and recess) on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Wednesday was used as a time for students to catch up and ask teachers questions during virtual office hours. This schedule seemed to work very well for middle school students.

On Monday, March 16, and Tuesday, March 17, teachers spent their time in professional development to prepare for virtual schooling to launch on Wednesday. Fortunately, high school students use technology every day and most of their books are already in a digital format. Other things took more time to prepare, such as making sure engineering students had access to computer-aided design (CAD) software and art students had to-go bags with supplies for unfinished projects.

Elementary School Principal Bridgid Fishman said her biggest challenge was finding the right balance in pre-K through 4th grade.

She refered to “Goldilocks and the Three Bears,” and explained that some families thought the schedule and amount of work were just right, while some thought it was too much or too little.

Though virtual schooling was challenging for lower grade levels, teachers kept connections with their students by maintaining morning meetings and prayer. It was also important to provide an atmosphere for expressing faith, so for the month of May, teachers shared a calendar with families that had things to do each day as devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

High School Principal Stephanie Nitchals said the biggest challenge was the speed in which teachers had to make the conversion from in-person to online teaching. Usually, there are 10 weeks over summer to plan for the next school year, but the “new normal” of virtual schooling gave them only days to prepare. The flexibility of her teachers impressed Nitchals the most. “They didn’t complain about it. They met the challenge. Our teachers put an incredible amount of time and effort into making sure the girls learned what they needed to learn to be ready for AP exams and to get all of the content needed for the next school year.”

With high school classes shortened to one hour, teachers adapted their lesson plans to make the most of their time. High school English teacher Melissa Cox explained, “It became a process of eliminating, simplifying and focusing on what mattered most. I overplan sometimes. I like to do a lot of activities in the classroom, but for virtual, I needed to make sure that the time they were spending with me synchronously wasn’t overwhelming.”

The unexpected switch to virtual schooling was not an easy undertaking for teachers, students or parents, but when faced with challenges, the Academy community always seems to support one another and persevere. Fishman said, “Who could have predicted this? Teachers and families have proven their flexibility, and kids are really resilient. We always say that, but they proved it this year.”

Academy parent and 4th-grade teacher Denise Cebollero phrased her experience perfectly:

“It takes a village. I can’t say that enough. The Academy family pulled together and made this happen to give our students a quick and nearly seamless transition. It wasn’t easy, yet we left it all at God’s feet and put in our faith. This process has made me recognize, even more than before, just how special it is to be an Academy Jaguar. In a time of uncertainty, I saw nothing but love, concern, faith and generosity come from our faculty, staff, students and families. Academy PRIDE: yesterday, today and forever in my heart.”

PANDEMIC INSPIRES

Desire to Serve Even in the midst of a global pandemic, Academy parents, students and staff were quick to aid those in need throughout Tampa Bay. With school moving online and social activities curtailed, members of the Academy community joined forces to donate much-needed time and resources.

Inspired by the Sisters of the Holy Names’ focus of service to people who are poor or marginalized, Sister Lisa Perkowski launched a mask-making campaign to serve health care professionals who were lacking necessary protective gear. Partnering with Hope for Tampa, Sister Lisa, along with 17 AHN parent, staff and student volunteers, donated more than 850 cloth masks to health professionals throughout Tampa Bay, including Baycare Riverview Hospital, Morton Plant Hospital, Home Instead Senior Care, and Integrity Senior Services. The Academy was also asked to sew masks for Saint Joseph’s Hospital and Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital using a breakthrough design from the University of Florida. For her work, the Super Bowl LV Host Committee recognized Sister Lisa with a virtual game ball!

Several students incorporated 21st century technology into their efforts to serve the community. Middle school siblings Avery and Jacob Judson used a Creality 3D printer to create face shields for health care workers locally and as distant as New York City. Using transparency films donated by Alex Llorente A’91, owner of Apex Office Products, the Judsons were able to print and assemble more than 300 shields, plus a batch of 40 for Academy faculty.

“It feels really good to know that I am making a difference in the outcome of this pandemic. I feel as if I am making my mark in 2020 and not letting it make a mark on me,” Jacob Judson said.

Ethan Wall, also in middle school, made 3D-printed face shields for TLC Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics and Sunshine SPOT home health facility, as well as 40 for Academy faculty. In the High School, juniors Laura Caroline Jung, Chloe Mintz, Jill Ledwon and Elizabeth McCree, along with Daniel Jung A’17, worked together—at a distance— to create 100 face shields for the staff and Tampa General and Morton Plant hospitals.

Laura Caroline Jung, who also made 40 shields for Academy faculty, wanted to help those who were helping the community. “In quarantine, I was quite attuned to the sacrifices health care workers were making. We were told that the most valuable first step in combating COVID-19 was staying home, but I knew I could do more to help those who were risking their lives for mine,” she said. “When Sister Lisa began spearheading Academy’s fabric mask collection, I finally found my way to get involved. My lack of sewing skills, however, led to making plastic face shields. … To quote many wise people throughout history, ‘If not us, who? And if not now, when?’”

Additional efforts included a technology drive for students in Hillsborough County who did not have access to a device for virtual schooling. In total, more than 21 devices were donated to Alexander Elementary and Egypt Lake Elementary. At the start of the quarantine, SAGE Dining, the Academy’s lunch provider, and the Dads Club donated all perishable food and concessions to Metropolitan Ministries.

Honoring Tradition IN A PANDEMIC

The Academy of the Holy Names has 139 years of rich tradition that has continually evolved, but no one anticipated how quickly the administration would have to adapt graduation traditions for the Class of 2020. As the coronavirus pandemic hit and the realization struck that the typical end-of-year festivities would not take place, Academy’s administration brainstormed innovative ways to celebrate the senior and 8th-grade graduates while following social distancing guidelines.

The seniors completed their final day of classes on May 1. A day on which they usually decorate their uniforms with their chosen college, run through the halls and jump in the pool, ending with a pool party. Instead, the Academy planned a car parade for the graduates. Seniors decked out their cars with paint, balloons, and college colors and regalia; they even wore decorated school uniforms. They drove several loops around campus, honking their car horns the whole way. Proud parents, siblings, and AHN faculty and staff made signs and cheered on the Class of 2020 during this special send-off. A couple weeks later, AHN’s 8th-grade class 8 FALL 2020

participated in a car parade as well. Parents drove as the students waved to family, friends and the teachers they’ve had over their years at AHN. The week of May 4 was designated as “Celebration Week” for the high school seniors and 8th-graders, and another creative plan was devised. Academy’s administration chartered a bus and surprised the graduates at their homes. AHN President Art Raimo, High School Principal Stephanie Nitchals, Sister Mary Glavin and several other high school faculty members presented the girls with caps and gowns, honors cords, yard signs, letters from teachers, and of course, a red rose. The seniors signed the side of the bus and left messages for their sisters.

Madeleine Gallagher A’20 felt heartbroken that the end of her senior year was not like she imagined it would be as a freshman, but she says the Academy went above and beyond to make her and her classmates feel special. “I’ve watched many of my friends be celebrated by their schools in different ways, but I did not see

a huge bus arrive at their homes with several faculty members to surprise them as AHN did. When I saw this, my heart was so happy that I was able to say goodbye one last time to some of my favorite faculty members. I was able to sign my name on the outside of the bus and even received a rose, in typical Academy fashion, as well as a large gift filled with several goodies. It was a day I will never forget and something that I will be eternally grateful for. “ After stopping by the homes of more than 100 seniors over three days, it was time to visit the 8th-graders. President Raimo, Elementary School Principal Bridgid Fishman and the 8th-grade teachers spent the next two days delivering goodies to the homes of their graduates, who also added their names and messages to the bus.

Though nothing can replace physically being with your classmates, teachers and family members to experience these special rites of passage, the Academy strived to honor the Class of 2020 in the best ways possible during these unprecedented times.

PERSPECTIVE FROM A GRADUATE SENIOR CLASS PRESIDENT TRESS JACOBS ON THE PANDEMIC

This worldwide pandemic seemingly came out of nowhere and took us all by surprise. It took from us some of the most precious moments one could ever hope to experience in their last year of high school. It’s because of this that I believe the Class of 2020 will always be remembered as the class that shone the brightest, even in the darkest of times. Throughout this unfortunate situation, my class has shown me time and time again that even though we weren’t able to finish out the year in person, we’ll always be family.

Due to COVID-19, my class and I unknowingly experienced a lot of lasts as seniors: our last school rally, our last tailgate, our last walk through the school halls. Despite this, we have also experienced a lot of firsts: our first virtual class, our first graduation parade, and our first outdoor socially distanced graduation. There are times when I get down about not getting my picture-perfect senior year. But any time I get even a little sad, my classmates are there to remind me that we are going through this together, and no matter what, we will persevere.

The sheer camaraderie between us as a class is honestly such a beautiful thing to see, and I am truly happy to know that I am a part of it. My classmates have gone above and beyond to be there for one another despite our current situation. This pandemic has taken a lot from us, but it’s also shown us that there is always more than one way to do something. It has brought out the more creative side of many of my friends. A friend of mine had a drive-thru birthday party, in which cars lined up with signs, party poppers, hats and plenty of confetti.

Each car drove by playing birthday music, while the birthday girl handed out cookies and stood for socially distanced pictures. It was one of the most creative and cutest ways I’ve seen someone celebrate their birthday!

Truthfully, I thought this pandemic was going to divide the class into cliques because we are no longer attending school together. If anything, it has done the opposite. My mom told me that most of the time the hardships that people experience together bring them closer to one another, and I can honestly say it’s true. During this pandemic, I’ve gotten to know some of my current and future classmates in ways I wouldn’t have been able to under regular circumstances. By that, I mean room tours, pet show-and-tell, family encounters, and so much more. COVID-19 is not something to play around with; it’s a very real issue with real consequences. Even so, I can’t help but be a little bit grateful for it, because amid all of the bad, it has helped the Class of 2020 realize that there will always be a bright side to things when we have one another.

On Saturday, July 25, after an extended delay, the Academy celebrated the 119 young women from the Class of 2020 at their graduation ceremony. Held on the AHN athletic field, the socially distanced ceremony maintained its beauty and honored tradition. While the 1st-grade flower girls sat the year out, faculty members Beth Chase and Jenny Van Pelt stepped in to hand out roses. As co-valedictorian Megan Hughes shared in her valedictory address, “The hand we were dealt had a major plot twist, but it didn’t stop us from staying connected to one another and seeing it through to the very end. And it won’t stop us from taking the next step into the rest of our lives, because the foundation of an Academy of the Holy Names education has shaped us into confident young women instilled with the grace and courage to make a positive impact on this world.

What I’ve come to realize is that while we cannot change the circumstances in which we’ve been placed, the decision to act boldly anyway is what makes all the difference. What never ceases to be within your control is how you choose to respond to adversity. I firmly believe that the Class of 2020 will not be remembered as the ones that graduated during a pandemic; rather, the ones that stared at defeat and found hope.”

Together, the class was accepted into 146 colleges and universities, served more than 33,750 community service hours and had 81 alumnae graduate with honors, 62 who are members of the National Honor Society and six who are continuing their athletics in college. In total, 73% of the class was offered $14.5 million in scholarships, including 70% who qualified for Bright Futures.

ATHLETICS OF THE YEAR During her time at AHN, Megan Hughes A’20 earned eight varsity letters as a four-year member of our cross country and track and field programs. A tremendous athlete and talented distance runner, she has garnered numerous district and regional championships across both sports and has qualified for states in every year she competed. Hughes has helped define what it truly means to be a student-athlete at Academy of the Holy Names.

To say that Hughes has rewritten the record books at AHN is an understatement. She owns virtually every distance record for the school in cross country and track and field, often by resetting her own records over the past two years. This past spring, for only the fourth time in our school’s history, the Florida High School Athletic Association named her to its exclusive 12-member female Academic All-State Team, where she was honored and presented a $1,700 scholarship.

Hughes’ academic resume is as impressive as her athletic one, with some arguing that it would fall short in comparison to her countless hours of community service. She has the honor of being named as the Class of 2020 co-valedictorian. Hughes will attend the University of Notre Dame where she will be a member of the cross country and track and field programs.

Caroline Lamoureux A’20 is this year’s recipient of The Heart of a Champion Award. This annual award provides a senior student-athlete a $1,000 scholarship via philanthropist Bob Griess’ You Can Change the World Corporation. Each athletic department in Hillsborough County selects three senior student-athletes to submit a short paper for review by a selection committee. Lamoureux earned The Heart of a Champion Award based on leadership, work ethic, dedication and her desire to be the best that she can be.

Athletics Hall of Fame Inductee JULIE JOHNSON NOHRA A’95 In February, Julie Johnson Nohra A’95 was inducted into the Academy of the Holy Names Athletics Hall of Fame. A four-year captain and member of the varsity basketball team, Nohra’s hard work, dedication and leadership helped propel the program to unreached heights while claiming individual accolades and achievements along the way.

Nohra became a member of the prestigious 1,000-point scoring club during her junior year, breaking the county’s all-time scoring record her senior year with 1,643 points, and finishing her career with 1,784 points. She was an all-county team member her sophomore, junior and senior years, and a first-team, all-state member her junior and senior years. During her senior year, Nohra averaged 15.6 points and 6.2 rebounds per game, and she helped lead the Jaguars to a state runner-up finish.

Nohra’s passion for education is evident in her career choice. After spending a few of her early teaching years at the Academy, she is currently in her 16th year of teaching at Carrollwood Day School.

According to Athletic Director Kevin Vargas, “On a personal note, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to watch Julie play in high school, and I was in Lakeland for the final game of her high school career. … I truly believe that the success and championships earned following [Julie’s] high school career would not have been possible without the four years she spent at AHN; the impact that she had could be felt in the accomplishments and accolades that followed her playing career.”

During her time at the Academy, Nohra also shined off the court. She served as president of the Ambassadors her junior and senior years, as the vice president of the Prom Committee, and a member of the S Club and the National Honor Society. She graduated from AHN with honors, and received the Dads Club Scholar-Athlete Award at graduation.

In her acceptance speech, Nohra credited the Academy with shaping the person she is today. “Basketball took me to the next level but the many lessons that I learned at AHN helped me to find success at the next level. The traditions and sisterhood shared here at Academy are truly unique and will stay with me forever,” she said.

Because of her academic and athletic accomplishments, Nohra earned the opportunity to attend the University of Tampa as a scholarship athlete. A member of the Spartans basketball team from 1995-1998, Nohra served as team captain her senior season.

THE SHOW MUST GO ON

When it comes to a celebration, where there’s a will, there’s a way. As the country sheltered in place and our social calendars were wiped clean, we quickly had to rethink how a gala could be adapted for the socially distanced. With less than two weeks to plan, the digitally savvy committee re-imagined a virtual Black and White By the Bay that still felt like an occasion our Academy community was a part of together.

Using social media, we were able to capture the spirit of Black and White By the Bay through fun testimonials, live chance drawings, flash sales, touching videos and even a guest appearance by our #1 auctionista, Sister Mary Patricia Plumb, SNJM A’55. Friends of the auction posted Facebook pictures of themselves bidding in their living rooms, backyards and poolsides dressed in everything from pajamas to black ties. In true Academy fashion, we rose to the occasion and rallied together in support of our beloved school.

With the support of 460 virtual bidders, the virtual event raised more than $344,000! We’re pleased to announce that through the donations to our Fund-an-Item program, $31,700 of that total will go toward the 2020-2021 financial aid budget.

The hard work of our creative and enthusiastic auction committee was not in vain as we utilized much of their good work for the online auction. A special thanks for the leadership of our amazing co-chairs, Lorraine Korb and Kerry Lather, during this unprecedented transition; we are forever grateful.

Alumni in HEALTH CARE RUBY DEHKHARGHANI A’04

As a surgical resident in Boston, Dehkharghani’s day-to-day schedule turned upside down at the onset of COVID-19. While her operating room reopened in July, she continues to catch up on delayed surgeries and has seen many of her pre- and post-op visits go virtual.

Though her routine in the hospital was impacted, perhaps more so was her desire to combine her love of politics with her medical background. Dehkharghani majored in biochemistry and math and minored in political science at the University of Tampa, leading to a health care analyst position with Congresswoman Kathy Castor and then an internship with former First Lady Michelle Obama. Dehkharghani worked her way up from correspondence to public affairs, and eventually researching the science behind obesity and how it impacts children.

Her love of Washington, D.C., kept Dehkharghani in the district for medical school at Georgetown University. In Boston, not only did Dehkharghani work on her residency but she also earned a master’s degree in public policy from Harvard Kennedy School. With a background in medicine and policy, Dehkharghani wants to inspire change through a political career.

“This public health crisis we are in right now has solidified that we need more scientists and physicians in the state, federal and local levels. … Prevention can be presented clearly through the eyes and knowledge of scientists and physicians. When combined with policy, this is a recipe for success,” said Dehkharghani.

Cardillo works as a registered nurse on the night shift at a hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. She describes her experience in the COVID-19 ICU the past few months: “There were times when our unit was full, but luckily, we never experienced the surge that was expected due to social distancing practices put in place in Nashville. There have been some hard shifts, but I have an amazing team of nurses around me. I also have a great support system at home, and I have received many sweet phone calls and texts from all my Academy sisters!”

JENNIFER GRIFFIN BUSH A’00

Bush is a nurse practitioner with Infectious Disease Associates of Tampa Bay. During the pandemic, her roles have expanded to visiting long-term care hospitals where people are recovering from the effects of COVID-19. Although the pandemic has created a new, hopefully temporary normal, she says it isn’t all bad. Bush explains, “COVID-19 has made everyone take a step back and realize that sometimes we need to reassess what matters. Maybe we shouldn’t be moving at 1,000 mph all the time. When most of us had to follow stay-at-home orders, we had a rare opportunity to spend more time with our families. Having those moments is truly what’s most important.”

AMANDA VALDES A’11

Valdes works as an anesthesiologist assistant on the intubation team at Medstar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. She and her team are responsible for placing breathing tubes in COVID-19 patients when they need to be supported on a ventilator.

Valdes says, “When I get to see some of the sickest patients recover and be discharged home to their families, it is a really inspiring feeling. I am so grateful and honored to play a part in the recovery process for these patients.”

Porter works as an electrophysiology and catheterization lab nurse in Tampa, Florida. In April, he transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan to aid in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. He was brought in as a cardiothoracic surgery ICU nurse, his original specialty prior to working as a cath lab nurse, and he has worked in several COVID-19 units with cardiacrelated care. Recently, Porter was featured on the “Today” show holding up signs with other traveling nurses.

Dr. Doerr is a pediatric hospitalist in Atlanta and shares some of her experiences adjusting during the COVID-19 pandemic after recently returning to work following maternity leave. “Having a child has made me more steadfast in trying to protect others, so as I go from room to room, I am so much more conscious of my gear, trying to ensure I keep every other child safe as well. It is a difficult time to be a first responder and a physician, but we can’t forget the reason why we chose this profession, to begin with; we want to help heal and help patients get better. It’s never been more critical to do this than it is now.”

In an effort to keep hospitals from being overburdened during the coronavirus pandemic, Anderson and Dr. Dillinger continued to care for emergency dental patients during the pandemic shutdown.

Gibbons is a registered nurse working in the medical ICU in Macon, Georgia. She never expected to be working in the ICU during a pandemic and was shocked at how critically sick her COVID-19 patients were as they needed a much higher level of care than a standard ICU patient. She says, “I think one of the best feelings as a nurse that I have experienced thus far into my career has been sending a recovered coronavirus patient home or out of the ICU!”

MAGGIE C.A. HOGARTH A’93 In February, the Academy welcomed artist and writer Maggie C.A. Hogarth as the 16th annual visiting artist. Graduating from AHN in 1993, Hogarth initially went to UF to study engineering. However, she realized that her true passion is art. Sister Mary Glavin told her before graduation that she wouldn’t be an engineer. “I should have listened to her because she was completely right. I walked into my first math class and realized, ‘Oh.’ It also doesn’t help that my senior year I didn’t take a math class,” said Hogarth, while laughing.

Before her presentation, art teachers Melissa Lima and Paige Rodriguez gave a brief introduction of Hogarth, describing the many clubs she was in while in high school and more about her life beyond AHN. “She has written over 49 books and has filled 186 sketchbooks. Also, she served as vice president of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America for three years,” Lima said.

Hogarth discussed what she learned during her time at AHN. Before the Bailey Center was built, art classes took place on the fourth floor.

Hogarth said while she didn’t have as many resources as students do now, she learned to feel validated in her art. “I was always asked to do little oddball jobs here and there, like designs for posters or flyers. There was never any question about what I put on there, and it was almost like they were saying, ‘Your work is OK, and we want it.’ I felt unjudged in my work while at Academy,” said Hogarth.

Hogarth showed some of her notes from high school, all of which were filled with drawings of jaguars, cartoons and other doodles.

She said how all of her teachers didn’t appreciate the drawings except one: science teacher Judy Perrella. Perrella explained to Hogarth that she was using the doodles as a memory device; she could see the drawings in her mind, and therefore, remembered the material better.

Reflecting on her time at AHN, Hogarth gave advice to the students about following their passions and developing faith in themselves.

“My time here has helped to make me who I am now; I learned the core tools of art. You have to believe in yourself and consider your art as your gift to other people.”

Hogarth was well received by students who attended. Students asked questions about messages in her art, her time in art school, and how she feels about self-expression in art. “I think of art as a vocation, which is a radical idea in this current culture. To think of what you’re doing as a service feels weird. Society tells artists that art is all about self-expression, and at a certain point, their art gets too self-centered, too internalized. Sister Mary Patricia Plumb Retires Over the summer, Sister Mary Patricia Plumb, SNJM A’55 announced her plans to retire — news perhaps more surprising than the onset of coronavirus. A member of the Academy community since the late ’40s when she arrived as a 4th-grade student, her name is synonymous with the school and her spirit a part of it.

At the age of 12, Sr. Mary Patricia felt her calling first to be a teacher, and then to become a Sister of the Holy Names. Sr. Laurent Marie, her teacher for four of her years at the Academy, was a friend and mentor to Sr. Mary Patricia. The two kept in touch even after Sr. Laurent Marie moved to Silver Spring, Maryland, and eventually to Africa.

After graduating from the Academy in 1955, Sr. Mary Patricia entered the novitiate and began her studies at St. Bonaventure University. She continued her studies at Barry University in Miami, and earned a master’s degree at the University of South Florida. She also took courses at the University of Florida and the University of Notre Dame.

Sr. Mary Patricia’s roles in education spanned many areas, beyond just the Academy. She also taught in Albany and Liverpool, New York, as well as St. Cecilia’s in Clearwater, where she was also a vice principal and principal. At the Academy, she served as a teacher, including at Boys Academy, vice principal and campus minister.

Though she loved teaching, Sr. Mary Patricia’s greatest passions were speech and debate — she earned seventh diamond as a National Speech & Debate Association coach and is a member of the organization’s Hall of Fame — and campus ministry. For those who were part of her NFL road trips, Sr. Mary Patricia is adamant that any rumors about her driving are not true. She recalls memories of students painting houses in Mississippi from the tops of vans because ladders were missing, and how she enjoyed seeing missionaries become friends with those they served.

Her love for the Academy will be part of Sr. Mary Patricia’s legacy. She credits the school for respecting students and meeting them where they are, and for not rejecting people based on who they are or where they came from. She says the Academy is a school where justice is the way to go, and she offers this advice for future generations: “Respect yourself and others. Live justly. Walk humbly. Get involved. Try something new. Don’t give up. The Academy has so much to offer.”

For those who worked with her, Sr. Mary Patricia’s emails will always be remembered — one knew she meant business if the text was all capitalized and in bold. So to you, Sr. Mary Patricia, WE LOVE YOU. BE GOOD.

Kerry Jennings Ostroski welcomed a granddaughter, Natalie Aurora, on July 25, 2018. Natalie’s mother, Krista, is a corporal in the Army and is currently stationed in Germany with her husband, Jose. Kerry’s second daughter, Becca, is also in the Army finishing basic training and advanced individual training schooling. Her first duty station will be the island of Oahu, Hawaii. Kerry’s youngest, Jessica, is currently a sophomore in her high school’s IB program.

Alexandra MacLeod was announced as a speaker for the 2020 FSU Sports Analytics Summit. MacLeod is in her fourth season with the Tampa Bay Lightning and serves as the market intelligence manager. She leads customer research efforts, analyzes data to determine market and business insights, and consults with departments across the organization to enhance the fan experience and provide support in creating strategies. Though a Tampa native, MacLeod joined the Lightning from Nashville, Tennessee, where she spearheaded the overall sports strategy for local, regional and national lines of business across the southern division of Comcast Spotlight.

Elizabeth Scarola was named to the 2020 Super Lawyers Rising Stars list.

She was also recognized in the area of health care law in the inaugural The Best Lawyers in America: Ones to Watch list.

Scarola is an associate at Epstein Becker Green in the firm’s St. Petersburg office.

2005 Jonathan D. Marks, M.D., graduated from the University of South Florida Health Morsani College of Medicine in May. Marks will be a medical resident in internal medicine at USF Health MCOM.

Khadeeja Safdar is a reporter for the Wall Street Journal, where she covers business topics, including big data, sports retail and corporate culture.

She previously covered the U.S. retail industry and was part of a team that was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2020 for its investigation into Amazon. She joined the Journal in 2013 after graduating from Columbia University.

Caroline Koch recently published an article on Texas’ unconstitutional policy of preventing Patrick Murphy from facing execution with the company of his Buddhist spiritual advisor. She thanks Sister Ann Regan for always providing her guidance and serving as an incredible role model in high school and inspiring her to write about injustices on death row. Her article can be read on the American University Law Review website.

An excerpt from her introduction reads, “I would also like to thank Sister Ann Regan and Professor Robert Johnson, who were instrumental in exposing me to the injustices on death row and teaching me the importance of advocating for the rights, and more importantly, the human dignity of every person.”

Allie Reichert was published on the Health Affairs Blog. Her article, “Toward Intercultural Health Care in Ecuador: A Roadmap for Equitable Reform,” draws on insights from her research in Ecuador and offers an overview of current successes and failures within the country to improve health care for indigenous groups.

2017 Lara Lontoc worked as a technology and design intern for a boutique branding company in New York City’s Tribeca neighborhood last summer.

She continues to work as a research assistant and teaching assistant at Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business.

Lontoc is studying IT management with a minor in collaborative innovation, a specialty of design. She was accepted to her dream internship this summer at a top digital strategies consulting firm.

While she had the ability to graduate early, she loves being at Notre Dame and is taking additional courses that will enhance her skill set.

Cole Mangan, Tyler Girsch and Carter Dill led a school supply drive for Potter Elementary School with local nonprofit organization Where Love Grows. The juniors were featured on “On the Record with Sarina Fazan” to talk about the supply drive and ways the Tampa Bay community can support the cause.
