We invite you to come experience Academy’s Art Programs and see the meaningful work of our students. They are reaching greater heights than ever before, at the Academy and in our community. Your support encourages and inspires them to reach their potential.

Our Fine Arts division is growing and developing to meet the needs of our students through our innovative arts curriculum and the introduction of new programs at the Bailey Family Center for the Arts. We are reimagining our future with bold changes where our students have state-of-the-art resources to hone their talents.

We are building on our history of preparing today’s artist to shape tomorrow’s world. It is an exciting time to be a part of Academy’s Arts Program as we pioneer a new path for artistry, scholarship and faith.

The Bailey Family Center for the Arts features a 350-seat theatre and a state-ofthe-art teaching and learning environment. The new facility provides a dedicated space for the arts, allowing the school to enhance its offerings and honor the Sister of the Holy Names’ longstanding devotion to art, music and theatre. We offer courses in visual art, dance, voice and instrumental music, as well as acting and technical theatre.

Professional Development

Education is a never-ending process. It doesn’t stop after earning a degree and starting a career. Through continuing education, our teachers can constantly improve their skills and become even better at their jobs. Professional Development, helps to ensure the best learning outcomes for our students. We are constantly discovering new teaching strategies and enjoy bringing them back to the classroom. This past summer, our Arts Faculty spent over 300 hours attending workshops, seminars and travelling to bring new and exciting ideas to the Fine Arts classroom here at the Academy.

From New York City to Paris we bring innovation and creativity to everything we do!

France: Paris & Provence, June 2019

Explore the history, culture, and highlights of France. This program, open to high school students, has a strong emphasis in the arts. Students need to have taken one year of a visual arts course by the end of the 2019 school year in order to be eligible.

Activities & Attractions:

n Visit monumental structures like the Eiffel tower

n Explore tons of museums with famous works of art!

n See the house and garden where Claude Monet spent the last 40 years of his life!

n Take a tour of the Palace of Versailles and learn the history of the French Monarchy

n Explore Catacombs underneath the city

n Visit the French Countryside and it’s medieval architecture

Kindergarten Presents...

Bugz! is a musical for young voices. The story is about all sorts of different bugs who are planning a picnic. The Lady Bugs are in charge of proper etiquette. The rapping Army Ants are in charge of security. The Praying Mantis is full of wisdom and says grace. All of the bugs get along with each other but no one is happy about the Stink Bug. The Butterflies enter and sing a song of encouragement and relay to the Stink Bug how things change. As a solution, they offer all the other bugs a flower so that the Stink Bug can join the picnic. The musical teaches the young students an important lesson about inclusion. Also, that being different creates beauty and uniqueness.

New Orleans Swinging Gypsies

The New Orleans Swinging Gypsies embody the spirit of gypsy jazz, traditional jazz and swing evolving into a form of punk rock jazz.

This high energy group is influenced by jazz legends Django Reinhardt, Duke Ellington and Jelly Roll Morton to name a few; music genre’s include jazz from the 1920’s-1950’s. Tap dancing provides percussion for the band and vintage jazz movement (charleston, lindy, swing) provide a visual of improvisational wizardry linking live jazz music to jazz dancing. You can feel this band’s vibrational force seeping through the streets of New Orleans French Quarter and Frenchmen St., encompassing a rich rhythm of unique sounds that swing with a passionate flare. You’ll often find swing dancers cutting a rug to this delightful band, merging music and dance as one!

Director’s Choice

Cal Morris

Cal Morris is a classically trained violinist and musician who splits his time between both coasts, and his childhood home, Oklahoma.

His music displays a deep love of symphony orchestra and cinematic soundtracks, mixed with modern millennial and current music. Cal taught himself how to play the piano with his twin brother at the age of six and immediately fell in love with the magic of music. At age 13 they decided to pursue violin and a few months later Dr. Hong Zhu from the University of Central Oklahoma heard them play. He wanted to take them on as classical students, and they wanted to learn as much as they could. Five years later they were offered full-ride music scholarships to the university--which they declined in order to start a long-time family business venture.

Nearly a decade later the love for music and happiness while playing hasn’t waned, and has become the focus of his current career. After nine years investing in the family business, Cal returned to music and performing and has never looked back!

Cal is happily married and the proud father of a five-year-old son and two-year-old daughter.

BROADWAY WORKSHOP has spent close to a decade inspiring and educating young artists through original, theatrical programming. In all that they do, they value professionalism, creativity, self-expression, inspired learning, transformation and fun.

They develop and produce educational workshops, summer theater camps, private and small group trainings and full-scale productions in New York City and across the country. All of these programs are designed to offer theater-loving kids a challenging yet supportive environment to explore their creativity and perfect their craft in acting, singing and dance.

Broadway Workshop’s programs are taught by working professionals, from Broadway stars to casting directors to seasoned Film & TV actors who share their knowledge, enthusiasm and joy with students of all ages and skill levels

Students from Broadway Workshop have appeared in many TV and Film projects as well as the Broadway productions of Dear Evan Hansen, Matilda, School of Rock, Anastasia, Miss Saigon, The King and I, Fish in the Dark, Mary Poppins, A Christmas Story, How The Grinch Stole Christmas, Sunday in the Park with George, Les Miserables, Annie, West Side Story, Kinky Boots, The Addams Family, Billy Elliot, The Color Purple, Elf, Newsies, War Horse, Shrek, Gypsy, Evita, Bye Bye Birdie, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Act One, Big Fish, Bullets Over Broadway, Waiting for Godot, People in the Picture, Chaplin, Ragtime, The Lion King, and Once.

Artist Guild 2019 Workshops

Visiting Artist Kathryn Reina A ’06

The Fine Arts Department welcomes creative designer and AHN alumna Kathryn Reina A ’06 as our guest artist for the 15th annual Visiting Artist event. Please join us on Thursday, February 7, 2019 in the Michael & Candace Valdes Gallery, Bailey Family Center for the Arts, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. for a reception, presentation and gallery viewing.

After graduating from Academy of the Holy Names in 2006, Kathryn attended College of Charleston, majoring in arts management with a concentration in historic preservation and community planning. After college, she pivoted careers into front end development, graphics and UI/UX Design. Kathryn now lives in Los Angeles, where she works with technology startups, celebrity and high-end luxury real estate clientele.

Kathryn recently collaborated with Jesuit alumnus Ryan Lockwood to Launch spared.com, an app offering common “cents” for managing student debt elimination.

Kathryn will have the opportunity to visit several high school classes during the week, giving tutorials and sharing her experience in digital media and web design.

Instrumental Arts

The students of the instrumental music program at Academy are rooted in their love for music and a passion for learning. As a result the instrumental classroom is naturally an artistic environment as well as a place for students to “belong.” Whether you want to learn how to play an instrument for the first time or you have already begun your musical path and would like to be a part of an ensemble, there is a place for you. We are all “musicians” and this is our common bond.

Two-Dimensional and ThreeDimensional Studio Art, Photography, Digital Imaging and Desig n

Our visual arts program embraces and challenges students to develop their artistic voices within the spectrum of traditional and contemporary art media. Beyond a foundation in design, drawing, art history and art analysis (2D Art I), students can delve into specific media, such as drawing and painting, sculpture and ceramics, photography, digital imaging, and graphic design through Yearbook Journalism & Design. Through theme-based units, critical analysis of master and contemporary artists, and design and concept-based problems, students hone their skills as they learn to navigate the formal and expressive qualities of the materials and design issues they employ.

Students advance to AP Studio Art where they can choose to concentrate in the Drawing, 2D Design or 3D Design portfolio and rigorously develop a unique and highly competent body of work for exhibition. Other students mastering visual communication and writing skills seek leadership opportunities as editors of our Gold Crown Medalist yearbook, Echoes. Students can also deepen their historical and critical understanding of art and culture by taking AP Art History. Our visual arts program provides many avenues for students to advance themselves in meaningful arts practice applicable to the real world.

Blessed Marie Rose

Blessed Marie Rose with Children is an oil painting intended to convey how the charism, the unique spirit of mission which filled the foundress of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, carries on through the students and faculty of Academy of the Holy Names community. Blessed Marie Rose fervently pursued forming a congregation to educate children in the faith, and she did so both didactically and affectionately. The young girl cups her own hands around the boy’s hands in a prayer position, implying the triangular shape of the trinity. The gesture is symbolic of passing on the charism and the faith to all who enter this school.
