letter from the PRESIDENT Dear Friends, It is sometimes said that people are born leaders, and while that may be true, I believe leadership is a skill to be learned. You learn through education, by watching others and emulating their leadership style while trying your best to avoid the mistakes they may have made. Believe me, no one in a leadership position can completely avoid making mistakes, but you own them, learn from them and then move on.

One of the greatest obstacles anyone in leadership faces is to effectively promote change.

Whether a club, a school, a business or even a country, the idea of change is fearful to so many people. It is the greatest impediment to change and it can be debilitating. Helping others overcome that fear is one of the most significant challenges any leader will face.

Recently, the Academy lost a good friend when Sister Pat Corbey, SNJM, a member of the Academy Board of Trustees, passed away. At 64 years old, Sister Pat was one of the youngest Sisters of the Holy Names. She was baptized on Christmas Day 1954, and she passed away on Easter Sunday morning 2019 — talk about a blessed life.

Sister Pat and my wife, Maureen, were lifelong friends. They met in elementary school and attended the Academy of the Holy Names in Silver Spring, Md. It was there that they developed a love for the Sisters of the Holy Names. Sister Pat ultimately entered the congregation and Maureen more recently became a Holy Names Associate. Sister Pat was the maid of honor at our wedding and godmother of our first child, Annie. Theirs was a friendship that stood the test of time and distance.

During Sister Pat’s professional career, she was a counselor who worked with adults, teenagers and children. She was a source of comfort, hope and compassion for all of them, and they, as much as anyone, are devastated by her passing. Fortunately for us, she left behind some of her thoughts in the following passage, which she wrote as she prepared to take her final vows in May 1990.

“The challenge for the future I present to myself and my Congregation is that we consciously and systematically work to eliminate fear. It is fear, I believe, that keeps us from moving forward, from taking risks, from facing the complex ecclesial issues that limit our lives and from living as visible lights of God’s presence in our world.

“This fear is located within us, and within our Church, culture and world. The fear I know in myself and in others prevents forgiveness, retains the barriers of class and allows us to look away from the needs and changes that are necessary to live in fidelity to God. “I hope that we can live unafraid, insecure and uncertain — except in the claim that God is in love with all of us.”

It sometimes feels as though our country is in the grip of fear. Fear of the unknown, fear of the other and sometimes fear of one another. It will take real leadership to break this circle of fear.

As I think about our graduates, I am comforted in knowing they have been cultivated as the leaders of the future. I have no doubt they have the strength and character to overcome fear and replace it with kindness and compassion. They have such tremendous potential and give me great hope for the future.

The model of leadership that has been presented to them, more specifically planted in them, is the Gospel image of Jesus washing the feet of his disciples. That of servant leadership.

True leadership is not preening. It doesn’t boast. It’s not petulant. It serves. We discover our greatness in service to others. In service to the idea that together we can be better, we can do better, we can make our world better.

Formal/ Expressive Intent: Our goal is to provide teens or anyone in need with an app that will protect them. With easy to use features that will allow anyone to let authorities know they are in danger without calling.

APP for That There’s an This spring, students from AP Computer Science Principles spent the semester programming and designing an application, or app, to present to local technology industry leaders. Working in groups, 25 students presented a total of 11 apps during the culminating Pitch Day at the University of Tampa Lowth Entrepreneurship Center.

Before the groups started building the final apps, the girls brainstormed ideas and teamed up according to interest. Within the groups, each student took a portion of the app and wrote the code to make it function using code.org. According to teacher Jessica Lamm, the students outgrew that platform quickly.

Some students designed the visual interface of their app, while others worked with students in the Art 2D II class, providing a cross-curricular angle. Visiting Artist Kathryn Reina A’06 (see page 36) guided the students on interface design, helping with the back-end elements of fonts and color schemes. Madeline Rodriguez A’21

assisted with the design of several of the apps, taking the computer science students’ vision and bringing it to life. For Rodriguez, working as a designer with a “client” made the experience richer and more applicable to real life. The groups had to offer and receive constructive criticism and refine their apps from that feedback.

Although learning to code came with its challenges, the students relished in their personal successes as well as those of their peers. Through the class, Amanda Rogas A’20 discovered she wants to pursue computer science in college. Her biggest takeaway? “The skill to problemsolve if something didn’t work the first time or if we had to make it more efficient.

Now, I understand why things, like buttons, work the way they do. I understand the functionality of everyday items. We can create something that will have a further impact on people.”

For the Academy, having an all-girls computer science program is breaking stereotypes. The school was recognized

by the College Board with the 2018 AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award for attaining female student representation in AP Computer Science Principles. Only 4% of participating schools worldwide received this recognition. The class is expanding exponentially. Next year, 20% of eligible students are enrolled in a computer science course: 58 students in AP Computer Science Principles and 11 students who will be advancing to AP Computer Science A. Caitlin Otte A’21 explains this growth with excitement. “Things that may not be considered ‘cool’ are celebrated [at the Academy]. In society, we are taught that girls are quiet and submissive. And in order to be well-liked, you have to do the norm. People are scared of a confident woman, but at Academy, there are a whole bunch of confident women, and it encourages people to open up to who they really are.”

And that is code for “Esse Quam Videri,” or “To be, rather than to seem.”

MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS FIND SUCCESS AT NATIONAL JUNIOR BETA CONVENTION In June, seven students from the Academy’s middle school traveled to Oklahoma City for the National Junior Beta Convention after receiving top honors at the state level. Seventh-grader Reese Edlund placed first in the state on the science test and second in painting, while 8th-graders Estella Colquett, Olivia Book, Olivia Lucas, Colleen Buckhorn and Lauren Wehling placed first in marketing and communications. Colquett also placed second in drawing.

The marketing committee’s leadership mindset program, Students Leading the School Step by Step, impressed judges and attendees alike at the state level.

The team repeated that success at nationals, taking the top prize! The group was tasked with developing a program for their school that incorporates leadership mindset and then had to present a two-minute pitch. The result was a threemonth program for students in grades 6-8. Meeting weekly, the sessions would include discussions from local leaders, communication and accountability skills, and the leadership qualities of integrity, delegation and empowerment. According to the group, “This club will teach students how to be responsible, accountable, to take initiative, and most importantly, guide them to becoming strong leaders.”

vision of the Academy for students to be leaders. We’re ultimately developing to be leaders in everyday life, not just in school. By implementing our club, we will give students the fundamental skills and qualities to apply to real life.”

When deciding on the framework of their pitch, the girls looked at the macroscopic level, as opposed to zeroing in on a specific issue. They realized students cannot be expected to solve community issues if they do not have a foundation in leadership skills. In order to test their idea, they polled Academy middle school students on their interest level in a leadership club, with a majority of the students showing interest. They even had former Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn agree to be the first speaker. “We’re proud of what it has come to. We put our all in it,” said Lucas. “We’re all so passionate about it.”

The students hope the Academy and other schools will consider launching their program. They envision older students taking over the responsibilities of planning schoolwide events like Community Service Day, pep rallies, fundraisers and more, while also mentoring younger students through tutoring and social activities. Speaking as a group, the girls said their overall goal is for students to discover something new about themselves, and become confident in knowing everyone is unique and can find the leader within.

CELEBRATING THE FUTURE On Wednesday, May 22, the Academy celebrated the 102 young women from the Class of 2019 at their graduation ceremony. Together, the class was accepted into 135 colleges and universities, served more than 25,596 community service hours and had 72 alumnae who graduated with honors, 52 who are members of the National Honor Society and three who are continuing athletics in college.

In total, 73% of the class was offered $12.5 million in scholarships, including 74% who qualified for Bright Futures. Five students were honored as Tampa Tribune Scholars, recognizing the top 3% of a school’s graduating class: valedictorian Lauren Dingle, co-salutatorians Sydney Lowman and Katherine Taulbee, Greta Dieck and Carly Finley.

Kathryn Taulbee was awarded one of the most highly selective merit scholarships in the nation, the University of Virginia Jefferson Scholarship, which covers the full cost of undergraduate tuition. Taulbee underwent a rigorous selection process, including seminar discussions, essay and math exams, and interviews. She is one of 38 students chosen from more than 2,000 nominees, and the first from the Academy. Jefferson Scholars benefit from a number of enrichment programs, including travel abroad, career networking, an outdoor challenge program, and a leadership speaker series. According to the university, “The Jefferson Scholars Foundation serves UVA by identifying, attracting, and nurturing individuals of extraordinary intellectual range and depth who possess the highest concomitant qualities of leadership, scholar­ship and citizenship.”

LINCOLN J. TAMAYO EMERGING LEADER AWARD

Chanita Belcher received the Academy Prep Center of Tampa inaugural Lincoln J. Tamayo (B’74) Emerging Leader Award, which “recognizes an individual who demonstrates leadership, dedication and integrity. This leader personifies character, perseverance and courage. ... The Lincoln J. Tamayo Emerging Leader Award recipient lives these leadership traits while lifting others through service to our community.” As Student Council president and Senior of the Year, Belcher regularly demonstrated her leadership skills at AHN and exemplifies the school motto, “Esse Quam Videri.” While at AHN, she was an integral member of POWER Club (Powerful Outstanding Women Encouraging Respect) and produced the Black History Month Music Through the Ages program. She will attend University of South Florida where she plans to study to become a history teacher.

“CATS” THRILLS AUDIENCE With a full complement of singing, dancing and technical feats, “Cats” elevated Academy’s theatre program to new heights. Not to be missed were the Broadway-caliber set design, makeup and costumes. Individual and small-group numbers highlighted an impressive vocal range and the unique personality of each cat.

Juliana Jett A’19 and Riley Schindler A’20 received the Straz Center’s 2019 Broadway Star of the Future awards for their outstanding performances. The Straz Center also recognized director Vivian Kimbler and assistant choreographer Elizabeth Edelson in the category of Outstanding Choreography. Bethany Masiello A’22 and Schindler both performed in the opening and closing numbers at the awards ceremony.

MS THEATRE PRESENTS

“Mary Poppins” Academy’s 7th- and 8th-grade theatre students offered three supercalifragilisticexpialidocious performances of “Mary Poppins” in May. Complete with English accents, the students sang and danced their way into the audience member’s hearts. The technical theatre crew worked tirelessly throughout the performance on lighting and set changes, bringing Disney’s most beloved governess to life.

For the third consecutive season and the third time in the program’s five-year history, the team qualified as a top-four seed and earned the right to compete in the Class 1A District 15 tournament.

Midfielders Ella Castellano A’20 and attackers Abby Crowther A’21 and Amelia Traviesa A’20 were named all-district second team, and midfielder Sophia Pyne A’22, defender Lilly Martinez A’19 and goalie Lauren Jones A’20 were name all-district first team. Maya Rhines A’19 and Katie Taulbee A’19 were selected to participate in the county’s senior all-star game.

The team earned the school’s third region championship in four years and advanced to the state final four for the third time in four seasons, led by Kareem Escayg, who celebrated his 100th win as the Jaguar’s head coach. Blakely Byrd A’19 and Emily Abdoney A’19 represented Hillsborough County in the annual Hillsborough versus Pinellas All-Star Game. Abdoney was also selected to the Florida Athletic Coaches Association All-Star state team, and she received the Janet Alvarez Award, given annually to the top female soccer player in the county. Started in 1985 by Jose Alvarez, the award “recognizes them not only for their playing ability but their abilities in the classroom, their leadership, and their social and community involvement.” Abdoney is the third AHN student to receive the award.

The team earned the title of Class 2A District 10 runner-up, with Alexa Fredericks A’20, Maddie Rodriguez A’21, Greta Dieck A’19 and Megan Hughes A’20 (4x800 relay), Jill Ledwon A’22 (high jump), Maddie Kurtz A’20 (shotput and discus), and Hughes (800m, 1600m) winning districts. At the Class 2A Region 3 meet, the team finished third and qualified 9 athletes for states, including Kurtz who set a new school record at the state meet in discus.

Hughes won the region in the 800m and the 1600m, and finished 5th in both events at states while resetting her own school records in both races.

The Jaguar tennis team had a dominant season in which each of the 10 members played a role in the team claiming the Class 2A District 10 championship and the Class 2A Region 3 championship, and advancing to the 2A State Final Four for the first time in school history. Individual district champions included Caitlin Neal A’19, Abby Neal A’22, Adriana James-Rodil A’21, Isabella Pearson A’23 and Caitlyn Asher A’19 in the No. 1 through No. 5 singles positions, respectively. The No. 1 doubles team of Caitlin and Abby Neal, and the No. 2 doubles team of James-Rodil and Asher also won. Caitlin Neal earned the title of 2A singles state runner-up, marking one of the finest seasons for an individual tennis player in AHN history.

The championship portion of the year began with districts in April with four boats earning silver or bronze, and the Women’s Second Varsity 4+ boat (Jayse Angel A’21, Gracesyn Moll A’21, Bella Salgado A’20, Stephanie Oehler A’21 and coxswain Asha Sneed A’21) and the Women’s Junior 8+ boat (Sophia Montero A’20, Reneé Rinderle A’20, Clare Mooney A’20, Adriana Seise A’21, Brooke Kubiak A’21, Grace Cronen A’21, Kailey McDonald A’21, Jessica Reynolds A’21 and coxswain Kara Kivenas A’20) earning gold. At the State Sculling Championships, the Lightweight Double rowed by Claire Sauter A’19 and Charlotte Carl A’19 earned bronze and claimed the Scholastic Championship in the event. At the State Sweeps Championship, the Junior 8+ boat (Eva Schillinger A’22, Cronen, Kubiak, McDonald, Reynolds, Seise, Montero, Mooney and coxswain Kivenas) finished 3rd in the state and 2nd scholastically, and earned a bid to nationals.

SENIOR ATHLETE OF THE YEAR During her time at AHN, Greta Dieck A’19 accumulated 15 varsity letters as a sixyear member of cross country, a five-year member of track and field and a four-year member of varsity basketball. She also earned the Three Sport Varsity Athlete Award from 9th through 12th grade. A gifted athlete and talented distance runner, she garnered numerous district championships, region appearances and qualified for states in every year of competition in cross country and track.

According to Athletic Director Kevin Vargas, “[Dieck’s] toughness, determination, leadership and grit were key aspects to her four seasons as a member of our varsity basketball program, and the word captain has become synonymous with her name across her three sports. … She has garnered the admiration of her coaches and teammates, and has been, and will continue to be, a leader and a role model for those who follow in her footsteps. The sky is the limit for her as she enters the next phase of her life.”

Dieck was also named the Dads Club Achievement Award winner, and was a recipient of the Heart of a Champion Award, an annual award and $1,000 scholarship provided to a senior student-athlete via Bob Griess’ You Can Change the World Corporation. The recipient is selected based on leadership, work ethic, dedication and desire to be the best that they can be.

Not only Academy’s top athlete, Dieck was named the 2019 FHSAA Ronald N. Davis Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year at the 25th Annual Florida Dairy Farmers Academic All-State Banquet, which honored the 24 members of Florida’s 2019 Academic All-State team. She earned a $6,300 scholarship with the recognition. All-State members were selected based on athletic participation, GPA, extracurricular activities, community service and essay. Dieck is the third student from the Academy to be selected to the team, and the second overall winner.

Athletics Hall of Fame Inductee

KIERSTEN DEHAVEN A’10 Kiersten DeHaven, center, at the induction with her brother Sasha, mother Candace, grandmother Mary DeHaven and father Eric.

In May, Kiersten DeHaven A’10 was inducted into the AHN Athletics Hall of Fame. Although she participated in several sports during her 14 years at the Academy, it was rowing in which she excelled.

While rowing for AHN, she finished 4th at the US Scholastic Championship in women’s single sculls, as well as 1st at Florida State Championship in women’s single sculls and in women’s four. As a member of the Tampa Rowing Club, DeHaven finished 6th at the Youth Nationals in women’s double sculls, and she finished 1st at US Southeast Regional Championship in women’s double sculls and at Florida State Championship in women’s four. She rowed the stroke seat. DeHaven was a member of the Junior National Team, attending the US National Team Sculling Development Camp and the US National Team Sculling Selection Camp for World Championship.

At the Academy, she was a member of the National Honor Society, Ambassadors and National Forensic League, and she served as a missionary to Ruskin, Mississippi and Appalachia. DeHaven matriculated to the University of Notre Dame, where she was a member of the varsity rowing team. She was a four-year Monogram Club member, a member of the Big East Season Championship team and a National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament participant. She was boat leader at the NCAA championships, helping the team to break Notre Dame’s school record. She served as the Notre Dame Athletics conference liaison to the Big East and Atlantic Coast Conferences, initiated the rowing team’s first charity event, the Erg-A-Thon, and she was the senior legacy campaign officer for the Notre Dame development office.

Upon graduating from Notre Dame with a degree in political science, DeHaven joined the Peace Corps, where she served in Western Samoa for two years as an education volunteer. She also spent time in New Zealand coaching before she enrolled at Georgetown University’s Walsh School of Foreign Service. DeHaven recently graduated with a master’s degree in global human development.

While at Georgetown, she worked for the Center for Social Justice as a graduate assistant. She also won the Entrepreneurship Pitch Competition, besting 86 other teams. Her pitch was for Kidame Mart, an Ethiopian social enterprise for which she now works.

Kidame Mart will use the $20,000 winnings to hire female refugees to distribute their products, including solar lamps, clean cook stoves and fortified nutrition products, within refugee camps. This will not only allow female refugees to gain employment and secure economic empowerment but it will also allow those within the camps access to affordable, high-impact products.

At her induction, DeHaven spoke about the potential sports have to empower women and advance them in leadership roles.

“Therefore,” she said, “I ask the coaches in the room that we teach these athletes how to lead. I ask the athletes in the room to support each other. I want to see more women supporting women.

We need each other as mentors and cheerleaders, supporting one another’s dreams. We are privileged to be a part of the Academy sisterhood and must seize the opportunity to help each other develop into leaders.”

WILLIAM “BILL” DEAN B’75 An AHN “lifer,” Bill Dean B’75 attended Boys Academy from 1st grade until graduating 8th grade in 1975. While at Boys Academy, he participated on all sports teams, including track, basketball (as captain), softball, swimming and football. Dean was a member of the Letterman’s Club and the honor roll, and he was president of Student Council in his 8th-grade year.

Dean attended Jesuit High School, where he was a four-year letterman in track and a member of the 1978 Florida State Championship mile relay team. He was a letterman in basketball, which he played for three years, and in cross country — becoming Jesuit’s first district champion his senior year. He continued to lead while

at Jesuit, as a member of the National Honor Society and as president of the student body.

After Jesuit, Dean continued his Catholic education, graduating with a degree in business administration from Georgetown University, where he was a four-year varsity letterman in track and cross country. He began his professional career as a licensed CPA with Price Waterhouse and then found his career in real estate.

Dean has served as vice president of real estate syndication at Pioneer Western Properties and regional vice president of Radnor Corporation. In 1999, he and a partner purchased IRP Realty. They recently joined forces with Willoughby Realty and Water Pointe Realty Group

of Stuart, Fla., where Dean serves as the managing broker of Water Point and is a broker/owner of the company. He has served on many committees and is past president of the Martin County Realtors of the Treasure Coast Association, and he was honored as the Realtor of the Year in 2017. Dean contributes considerable time to his favorite charities, including St. Mark’s Church and School and the Jupiter Tequesta Athletic Association, serving as a sports director and volunteer coach.

Dean’s nominator writes, “I taught Billy at Boys Academy, and he was the kind of young man who made others around him better. He was a natural leader and a wonderful human being.”

Feature STORY The Dads Club hosted its most successful golf tournament to date, raising more than $100,000 for the AHN Link Scholarship Program, the Parent Annual Fund, High School and Elementary School, mission trips, buildings and grounds, arts and athletics. RAISES $500,000 The Academy of the Holy Names annual fundraising gala, Black and White By the Bay, raised more than $500,000 for the school’s Annual Fund. Held at the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay on March 23, some 500 Academy parents, alumni, faculty, staff and friends donned their finest blackand-white (with accent colors of sea glass) attire to enjoy an evening featuring silent and live auctions, Wine Wall, fine dining, a specialty mini Bundt cake buffet and lively entertainment from the Funk Monster Band. For the second year, the chance drawing for a “Mystery Bag” (a high-end, designer purse) filled with swag for a total value of more than $2,000 was a tremendous success! New this year was the wildly popular “Heads or Tails,” an interactive game that involved lively competition for a grand prize of a $2,500 shopping spree.

The parteras (midwives) invited Reichert to wear their traditional clothing for formal events and presentations, including parades, government meetings and Reichert’s project presentations, because they saw her as a part of their organization.

It is a Friday in June, and Allie Reichert A’14 Skypes from a cafe in Quito, the capital of Ecuador. It’s the one day that week she has internet access. Reichert spent the past year in the country on a grant as a Fulbright Scholar, researching indigenous women’s access to health care. Reichert first discovered Ecuador during her junior year at Dartmouth, where she majored in feminist philosophy and minored in global health. She spent time in the country working with the Runa Foundation researching food security.

During her year as a Fulbright Scholar, Reichert worked in two towns. From September through January, she lived with a host family and worked in Otavalo at the Jambi Huasi clinic, which translates to Health House in English. Through an intercultural health care model at the facility, patients may meet with a biomedical doctor in addition to or in lieu of a shaman, who is viewed as a traditional healer.

In January, she relocated to Archidona, a town in the Napo province. There she worked for six months at a midwives’ clinic, AMUPAKIN (Associación de Mujeres Parteras Kichwas de alto Napo, or

Association of Women Midwives Kichwas of Alto Napo), which relied on plantbased medicine. Located in the Amazon region, Reichert lived in a cabana on the property. She shared cooking and farming responsibilities with the on-call midwives, learning to distinguish edible plants within the jungle. Reichert noted she was treated as their equal and part of the organization.

For the final month of her project, Reichert returned to Quito to write a research paper with her Fulbright Program sponsor, a professor at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito, whose focus is on health care for indigenous women. After collating her data, Reichert noticed distinct experiences in both areas. In Otavalo, the women felt comfortable and heard by both the western doctor and the shaman. The staff spoke the native language and the biomedical doctor respected medical traditions. In Archidona, women preferred the services of the midwives, but went to the hospital more often because government services were free.

Offering a voice for the women in Archidona, Reichert started working with the regional government in Napo to find funding for the

clinic. Because the Ecuadorian constitution says its people have a right to intercultural health care, Reichert is lobbying for financial support. She is hopeful she will be able to climb the bureaucratic ladder using her research as a foundation.

Reichert plans to move to Washington, D.C., and continue researching barriers to health care access for women. Her time in Ecuador led to the realization that she loves research, so she is considering a master’s degree in public health or a doctorate in medical anthropology. She would like to eventually return to Ecuador and continue her work there.

Drive is not something Reichert lacks, and her passion for her work is clear. It’s a passion she first found at the Academy while she was serving as a missionary in the Dominican Republic, an experience that started a desire to impact others. “It propelled me to look into women’s issues,” Reichert said. “It started my passion for global health and for women’s health. The Academy does a really good job of running the mission trips. They are a productive way to get girls out in the world and make a difference.”

Visiting Artist COLLABORATES WITH STUDENTS ON MOBILE APP DEVELOPMENT In February, the Academy welcomed the 15th annual visiting artist, Kathryn Reina A’06. Reina attended College of Charleston, majoring in arts management with a concentration in historic preservation and community planning. After college, she pivoted careers into front-end development, graphics and UI/UX design. Reina now lives in Los Angeles, where she has worked over the past few years in collaboration with the Oxford Exchange and Walter Sky apparel.

Her work with a boutique hotel, Villa Carlotta, was also featured in Vogue. She also partnered with Jesuit alumnus Ryan Lockwood to work on an app that helps manage student debt elimination.

Throughout her presentation, Reina described her educational background and project history, as well as advice on entering creative fields. As someone who did not figure out what career she wanted to pursue until after she attended college, Reina spoke of the power of persistence when discerning what makes one happy. She took time to directly address current Academy students, reminding them of the importance of sticking up for their beliefs and never being afraid to advocate for their ideas.

In addition to the Visiting Artist presentation, Reina worked with Academy students on a collaborative app development project. The goal of this project was for visual art students to design a UI (user interface) style guide (logo, header, colors, fonts, graphics, etc.) for an app conceptualized and programmed by AP Computer Science students (see page 4). The visual art students acted as the design

leads, collaborating with their clients, the AP Computer Science students, to bring their visions to life.

The girls participated in designer-client meetings where the AP Computer Science students explained the purpose of the application and their target demographic. The art students then researched design ideas and sketched concepts while the computer science students worked on the programming end of development.

The students came back together for final meetings, where logos, color schemes and style guides were presented. Reina worked closely with each group during the final designer-client meeting, offering them advice on how to improve their overall application and providing tutorials for designers.

Visual artist Lauren Lamoutte A’20 enjoyed the collaborative element of the project. “It made it feel real-life, and I think it was a great way to be exposed to how a true customer-designer meeting would go in the workforce,” she said. “I also thought it was a unique experience in that I was able to challenge my digital and drawing skills at the same time and bring them together into one piece.”

As a female in a predominately male field, Reina reminded the girls that sometimes it pays off to be a strong female force in the workroom, saying, “I always sort of like being the only woman.

Because then I get to come in and prove to them that I know what I’m talking about!”

COFFEE & ROSE Ceremony In May, 102 young women and their families enjoyed the Silver Coffee and Rose Ceremony, an 87-year-old tradition at the Academy. Attendees enjoyed coffee, tea sandwiches and sweet treats hosted by the Holy Names Alumni Association and the Mothers Association. After coffee, the seniors each received a rose and ascended the front staircase.

Following the Silver Coffee and Rose Ceremony, the seniors and their mothers proceeded to the Chapel of Blessed Marie Rose Durocher for the Alumni Induction Ceremony. Each senior signed the HNAA membership book and received a gift and certificate of alumni status.

Congratulations, Sister Mary Glavin!

It was a joyous occasion in April celebrating a special jubilee for Sister Mary Glavin with a High School Mass and reception. During Mass, the Sisters of the Holy Names and their Associates also renewed their vows. In her years as a Holy Names Sister, Sr. Mary has been a teacher, principal and counselor for engaged couples, and she is currently the head of the High School Guidance Department.

2009 Pete Alonso dove into his major league career by starting at first base for the New York Mets on MLB Opening Day in March against the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park. Alonso made the roster after an outstanding performance during spring training this year.

 Marianna Sotomayor was recently announced as a journalist in NBC’s 2020 embed class, a group of 10 reporters and producers selected from more than 300 applicants. Every four years, NBC networks pick a stable of young journalists who obsessively follow a campaign or move to an early voting state, racking up airline miles and hotel points while serving as the news division’s eyes and ears on the ground.

 Emmy Martin won the FSGA Women’s Amateur Championship in June. Georgia Ruffolo A’20, a Wake Forest golf commit, made it to the semifinal round — the only junior player to do so.

Martin recently graduated from Texas Christian University. She has started a nonprofit, Played With Heart, to equip young girls with all they need to play golf. She will compete in additional amateur tournaments over the summer and plans to pursue professional golf later this year.

Siobhan Lynch graduated from New York University. She is working as the executive agent assistant to the president of Artist Group International, whose agency represents artists and bands, including Neil Young, the Strokes, Elvis Costello, Cage the Elephant, Norah Jones and more.

Courtney Mastrorio graduated from the University of Florida with a bachelor’s degree in education. This spring, she was honored as the 2019 Outstanding Undergraduate for Unified Elementary Education ProTeach. She will attend graduate school at UF, seeking her master’s degree in special education.

Kierstin Mayor graduated from Wake Forest University. She is moving to Charlotte, N.C., to work as a strategic analyst associate at Red Ventures.

Julia Metzger graduated cum laude from Holy Cross with a degree in economics and French. After traveling over the summer, she hopes to move to New York City.

Natalie Smith graduated from George Washington University with a double bachelor’s degree in political science and statistics. She is working as an operations research analyst at Systems Planning and Analysis, providing the Royal Australian Navy with analytics and strategies to address the capacity and capability gaps of their fleet.

Kayla Rodriguez graduated from The University of Tampa. She is a registered nurse in the ICU at Tampa General Hospital.

Bahr says she feels she is serving others by capturing stories that give people hope as she writes about research and clinical trials that are rapidly saving people. “Being Catholic has always played a huge role in my life and was further developed at Academy,” she added.

Sister Pat served as a clinical social worker since 1977, providing psychotherapy services for children, adolescents and their families. Sister Pat served on the boards of the Academy of the Holy Names in Silver Spring, Md. (her alma mater) and the Academy of the Holy Names in Tampa. She entered the Sisters of the Holy Names in 1982. As an SNJM, she was a member of the Ministry Grant Committee, dispersing more than $100,000 annually to SNJM projects within the United States for marginalized youth and families. Her volunteer work included the Chaplains Ministry within DC Jail at Christmas, as well as board service for Nick’s Place Inc., a sober house for young men, ages 18-26, in Maryland.
