hen I came to St. Michael’s in the Spring of 2004, one of my first lunches with a parishioner was with Bob Slaughter. He came by my house one day after the moving trucks left and helped us haul away empty cardboard packing boxes. I remember him flattening and loading the boxes into the back of his pickup truck. Shortly after that, he took me to get a hot dog and an orangeade at the little sandwich place on Oberlin Road. Over a few weeks, Bob had let me know that he loved St. Michael’s, and he said to me words I’ve never forgotten: “I need my church more than it needs me, but one day I would like to set something up which will help the church for years to come.” That summer Bob was busy as usual at the church, on the Vestry, helping the youth group mission trip, mowing the lawn, working in the garden. Then he got sick, was hospitalized, and I was called in to witness the signing of his will. He brought in a

number of people to witness his final wishes, and then he died. It was in October of 2004 when I buried Bob Slaughter, who was then just a few years older than I am now. Bob left the church somewhere in the neighborhood of $350,000. Very quickly, a handful of us got together to figure out the best way to establish a foundation in keeping with what we remembered Bob to had told us. We got the legal papers together and created a non-profit supporting organization for the sole benefit, and under the ultimate control of, St. Michael’s. The vision was that this would be a long-term repository of legacies and gifts, which would be invested in a common pool, under a unified investment approach and for a unified purpose. The foundation would not be a basket of many little funds and gifts, but would be a single foundation, with a See RECTOR on page 4

he St. Michael’s ECW raised $53,000 for the Camden Street Learning Garden during their Spring Garden Party May 12. More than 150 people gathered in the Parish Hall to enjoy an evening of fun and fellowship and lots of bidding! All of the proceeds raised will support the building of an outdoor kitchen and classroom at Camden Street. John Constance and Greg Jones served as entertaining auctioneers as parishioners bid on live auction items that included reserved Sunday parking for a year, a long weekend getaway to Figure Eight Island and the always popular dinner with Greg and Melanie Jones. Throughout the evening there was the opportunity to bid on Duke and UNC basketball tickets, original art by parishioners Liles Dunningan, Jimmy Black and Martha Crampton, gourmet gift baskets, a lottery scratch off “giving tree” and much more! The $53,000 will help raise the roof on the new outdoor classroom and make it possible for more families to participate in

gardening and learning to prepare healthy food. The Parish Hall was transformed into an inviting party space with beautiful floral arrangements designed by Katherine Poole and Liz Driscoll. In the spirit of the evening, many of the arrangements featured herbs and vegetables – even kale! The farm-to-table menu, provided by Lip Service Catering, a locally owned business committed to sustainability and supporting local purveyors, was delicious. Gazpacho, bang bang shrimp, kale salad and chicken with charred lemon fortified the hungry auction goers. The live auction was energetic with a bidding war between Bonnie Woodruff and Michele Murphy for dinner for 12 with Greg and Melanie Jones. In the end everyone came out a winner with two dinners being offered for $2,000 each! The highest bid was
