Cheeseburgers for the Homeless

On his commute home from work, Ian McBride ’98 was struck by the circumstances of two homeless people. So he stopped and bought them two cheeseburgers. The next day, McBride bought 25 burgers and drove around the area, handing them out to anybody who looked hungry, and his “Cheeseburgers for the Homeless” charity was born.

R

ay Glemser and I were Holy Ghost Prep Class of 1979 classmates with so much more in common than just the same first letter in our last names. We both served on the Firebird Yearbook, played soccer, and are willing to admit that we attended HGP dances in the late ’70s!

We have remained friends since graduation, as so many Ghost alums do. I’ll never forget Ray telling me the story of how he and his wife, Sue, brought home their two adopted children from Russia, somehow managing to survive their flights on Areoflot and navigate their time at the Russian orphanage. I often thought about the enormous love and commitment that Ray and Sue wanted to share with children of their own, and it was now going to be possible.

In this, our second Giving Issue of Holy Ghost Prep Magazine, the cover story is titled “The Ultimate Gift” and chronicles how adopting a child can be the ultimate gift a person can give. In the cover story package, we profile a current HGP family (the Featherstones), two alums (Dr. jerry Margiotti ’74 and my old high school buddy, Ray Glemser ’79), and two longtime employees (recently retired Beth Vilsmeier and Terry Kudla), all of whom have adopted children, and we look at the life-changing impact it has had on their lives.

The other major features in this issue all illustrate HGP’s giving nature—from features on Holy Ghost Prep students Philip Lee ’21 and Zach Posivak ’20, who through the generosity of others were both scholarship recipients here at Ghost, to a feature on Ian McBride ’98 and his “Cheeseburgers for the Homeless” initiative to feed homeless people in Philadelphia, to a story on the unforgettable “50 Years of Forensics” celebration and how HGP donors are ensuring the next 50 years of this signature program, to a feature on HGP icon Marie Bliss, who gave 46 years of science teaching excellence to this school.

This issue also includes a two-year reporting of donors. The generosity of the individuals and organizations listed in this annual report has literally changed the face of this campus, allowing us to build our state-ofthe-art STEM Tower and the magnificent Holt Center. Your giving nature has also provided much needed scholarship support for deserving students and helped fund our other Vision 2020 initiatives.

We still have some fundraising to do in the next couple months to reach our final Vision 2020 campaign goals. But I am confident we will reach the finish line because of the giving nature of the HGP community highlighted in this issue of the magazine. Thank you for being such a wonderful member of this family we call Holy Ghost Prep.

he mother was crying. The doctor was sobbing.

The translator was weeping.

And all because of a simple question.

When Peggy Featherstone took her newly-adopted Chinese son, Andrew, to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for a preliminary examination of his cleft palate, the doctor asked Andrew—through an interpreter—if he had been experiencing any sleep difficulties. Andrew acknowledged that he had been having nightmares.

“You know you have a father and mother you can go to when you have bad dreams,” the doctor said.

Andrew thought about that and then addressed Peggy Featherstone: “Does that mean you consider me to be your son?”

Featherstone couldn’t have answered “Yes!” any more quickly. Andrew was indeed her son, just as the other three Chinese youngsters they had adopted—and the one they would adopt later—were her children. Just as her three biological sons and her daughter were her children.

Featherstone and her husband, Mark, had wanted a big family. By adding five Chinese newcomers to their original quartet, they had their wish. And they had received the opportunity to give better lives to five young people who are now thriving and part of a raucous, rollicking family unit.

“The biggest thing about adoption is that we are all challenged, and we are all called every day to do small or big things,” Peggy says. “You have to trust God will give you the courage to do it, and then you have to do it. You can’t be afraid.”

The Holy Ghost Prep community has been blessed in many ways by its families. The Featherstones, who have put three children through HGP and have a fourth boy, Danny, who is a junior at the school, are tremendous examples of how people can give of themselves in many different ways. By adopting their five children, they have bestowed their gifts of time, money, patience, support and especially love on people who needed them. Their story—and those of the four other Ghost families chronicled in this issue—are examples of how we are capable of impacting others through our generosity of spirit.

The Big Red Van It has become a fixture throughout Newtown. The Featherstones’ 12-seat van has barreled around town with any and all combinations of parents and nine children for 15 years.

“Everybody knows it,” Peggy says. “It looks like it’s going to fall apart, but somehow, it doesn’t.”

That’s how it is with big things, like families. At times, they seem to be careening out of control, but something always holds them together. The Featherstones each came from a family of four, but they wanted a bigger grouping when they got married.

Peggy was in her mid-30s when she had the first of their four biological kids—Maggie, Thomas ’14, Mark ’17, and John ’19— but that wasn’t enough.

So, they adopted Anna, who is now 20. That started it. “They say one adopted child brings another,” Peggy says. So, the Featherstones added Danny. They were told they could only adopt children with special needs, and that’s how they ended up adopting five children, four of them with cleft palates and lips.

“When we went to get Danny, he held onto me in the orphanage,” Peggy says. “He was two years old, and he was afraid I was going to take him to another orphanage. He was one of 100 kids hoping to be adopted. When we left with him, I knew we would be going back again.”

Keriann was next, and that was supposed to be it. Life was good with seven children.

Except…

“I knew my heart had room for two more,” Peggy says.

So, Andrew and Emma joined the family. At first, it was a bit rocky. The Featherstones’ six oldest children were teenagers, and they wanted life to be simple. Bringing in new kids who didn’t speak the language and had special needs wasn’t exactly the best way to create a smooth, easy atmosphere. “But we realized 4

they wouldn’t be teenagers forever,” Peggy says. The newcomers were eventually accepted, and now it’s just one large, ninechild family with kids ranging from 14 to 25. It’s not easy. Both Featherstones work, and putting the majority of their children through Ghost and other independent schools hasn’t been cheap.

But the payoff has been huge, and now the family is providing advice to other area families about adoption.

“You can’t be afraid,” Peggy says. “It’s not going to be easy, but the joy is tenfold.”

From Russia, with Love Ray Glemser ’79 expected something so much more antiseptic.

Perhaps he and his wife, Sue, would have to field some yes-or-no questions—Soviet Union style—and then they could leave with their two new children.

But the women at the adoption agency in Murmansk, the most populous city above the Arctic Circle, wanted more. If they were going to let Nadezda and Adil go to another country, the women wanted to know about the Glemsers. What was their house like? What would happen to the children if Ray and Sue died? What was Pennsylvania like?

“It was an entirely opposite experience from what I thought

it would be,” Glemser says. “I felt that we had Russia’s future in our hands. We take that very seriously.”

The Glemsers brought home “Nadia” and “Adi,” and renamed them Julie and Raymond. At the time, Julie was three-and-ahalf, and her brother was a year younger. They are now 23 and 22. And a couple that had married in their late 30s and were not able to have children of their own had an instant family.

It’s not like this was a completely different experience for the Glemsers. Ray’s brother married someone who had been adopted. Sue’s father was adopted. Her cousin had adopted children from Chechnya.

“We had a good feeling in our families about adoption,” Ray says. “There was no reason it couldn’t work for us.”

They worked with an agency that connected American families with Russian children and were soon off to Murmansk to meet their children, who were two of a family of seven kids.

They didn’t know what to expect at the orphanage, and they had no idea what lay ahead of them once everybody returned home.

“I describe the transition as hysterical in the sense of being funny and in terms of being crazy,” Ray says. “We had two fully formed children speaking Russian who were very active. It was all about containment. Just getting things to calm down was tough.”

Julie and Raymond spoke Russian to each other and couldn’t understand why Ray and Sue didn’t know what they were saying. They didn’t respond to their new names and resorted to speaking slowly and loudly—like laughable American tourists in a foreign land—in an attempt to communicate. Eventually, the two “couples” finally connected. Now, Julie and Ray speak fluent English, to the point that when their parents show them videos of them singing Russian songs as youngsters, they can’t understand the words. But that doesn’t mean they don’t feel a connection to their homeland.

“To this day, it is important to them that they are Russian,” Ray says. “They like the idea of being from there. They identify with that.”

People also identify the Glemsers’ two children with them, telling Ray and Sue that Julie and Raymond “look just like” them.

“I think it’s wonderful,” Ray says.

All in the Family It took two days for Patricia and Jerry Margiotti ’74 to go from crushed to thrilled.

They had learned on a Wednesday that the birth mother of a baby they had adopted 45 days earlier had changed her mind.

She wanted her child.

“I called seven lawyers, and luckily for us, none of them wanted to take our case,” Dr. Jerry Margiotti says. “Legally, she was within her rights.”

By not making legal trouble, the Margiottis went to the top of their agency’s list. That Friday, they received word that Michelle was available. Two years later, they welcomed Gerard to their family. Then came Christina and Matthew. Over 12 years, the

family had adopted four children. The first experience stung, but after that, everything was perfect for Patricia and Jerry, a 1974 HGP grad. Their son, Jerry III, is also an HGP alum (Class of 2013) and is a partner with his dad in a successful Bucks Country pediatrician practice.

“Even though all the kids have blue eyes, and [Patricia] and I have brown eyes, people still think we look alike,” Margiotti says.

As a pediatrician, Margiotti was able to use his connections with other physicians to find children he and Patricia could welcome in their family. And when Christina got married a few years ago and was unable to get pregnant, the Margiottis helped her adopt Mark in the summer of 2017. And as so often happens after events like that, “she got pregnant four months later,” Margiotti says.

Margiotti insists that he and Patricia were always extremely honest with their children about the fact that they were adopted and answered all of their questions directly. Their childhoods and adolescent years were filled with the same highs and lows as any other children. “Nothing that happened to them had to do with adoption,” Margiotti says. He tells the story about the time Christina was five and angry at her parents during a car ride home from Sea Isle City. She said, “You’re not my father!” Margiotti pulled the car over and asked if she wanted to get out. Understanding the severity of the moment, Christina backtracked and promised “never to say that again.”

She never did.

“I think the best thing we have done was to be honest,” Margiotti says. “There is an acceptance of the fact that this family came together by adoption. We answered questions openly. If our children want to try to find their birth parents, we’ll be supportive.

“We want them to be happy. We were very fortunate.”

Journeys of a Lifetime

s every parent knows, the decision to start a family is the beginning of a journey, one that includes both enormous sacrifices and humbling rewards. But for Terry Kudla, Holy Ghost Prep’s college guidance coordinator, and Beth Vilsmeier, recently retired music director, that journey involved something more.

Both Terry and Beth and their husbands, Mike Kudla and George Vilsmeier, decided to have children through the process of international adoption. Each couple’s story is the story of a journey through a complex set of bureaucracies, with the ultimate goal of somehow forming a family.

International adoption presents couples with a number of unique challenges.

Prospective parents must abide by the regulations and demands of many different entities at once, from the adoption agencies from each country, to the state where the couple lives, to the specifications of the countries themselves.

Managing so many expectations requires a significant amount of time, patience, and resources.

For the Kudlas, starting a family also included a 10-day trip to Russia, where their daughter, 10-month-old Megan, was born in 1998. Working with World Child International, the Kudlas first completed a massive amount of paperwork. Visits from social workers and trips to Harrisburg for the necessary documentation were part of a long and difficult process.

The adoption also required a significant financial investment. Countries who participate in international adoption know that in giving up their children, they are giving up their most important resource, and they expect something in return. Per Russian specifications, the Kudlas brought with them onto the plane $15,000 (in $100 denominations), along with seven suitcases full of humanitarian aid, most of it clothing the Kudlas had bought on shopping trips with their nieces and nephews. “Ok, we’re

going to buy things for Megan’s friends now,” Terry would tell them all before they entered the next department store.

Terry and Mike flew to Samara, a tiny shore town on the Volga River, about 500 miles southwest of Moscow. Samara was “very pretty,” Kudla remembers, “but also very poor.” It looked like a town one might find at the Jersey shore—if one were visiting the Jersey shore in the 1960s.

Both the town and the orphanage confirmed for the Kudlas that they would be able to provide Meg with resources that Samara could not. The Kudlas stayed with a host family in a tenement building, in a one-room apartment with a single twin bed.

The orphanage was clean and well-kept, but the facility was old and underequipped.

Cribs and playpens accommodated up to six children.

A fractious relationship between Russia and America didn’t help matters. Russian medical reports on Megan were full of false information. Before a judge made their adoption official, representatives from the court observed Terry and Mike while they played with Megan, to make sure that they seemed like fit parents. “I had 11 nieces and nephews,” says Terry. “I knew how to take care of a baby. I was asking myself, why do I feel like I’m on display?”

All of the sacrifices paid off, however, when their adoption of the baby the Russians at the orphanage had nicknamed “American girl” was finalized. “Megan smiled the first time she saw us at the orphanage,” Terry recalls, “and she hasn’t stopped smiling since.”

Their return to the United States became a celebration for the whole family. Flying into Kennedy Airport in New York City, they were greeted by all 18 members, many of them holding red, white, and blue balloons and waving American flags. A rented limo bus drove everyone back to Philadelphia, in a mood similar to the bachelor and bachelorette parties such limo buses are known for. “It was awesome,” Terry remembers.

Awesome might not be the first word the Vilsmeiers would use to describe their

first encounter with their two South Korean children, who also came to America through Kennedy Airport, 40 years ago.

Unlike the Kudlas, Beth and George Vilsmeier were hoping to adopt more than one child. They were also prepared to raise school-aged children rather than a newborn.

The adoption was facilitated by Welcome House, a foundation in Doylestown created by the writer Pearl Buck, who made the adoption of Amer-Asian children her mission.

After many stops and starts, as well as the same sorts of regulations the Kudlas had encountered—fingerprints with the FBI, visits from social workers, a file of paperwork 4-5 inches thick—a representative from Welcome House called to ask if George and Beth were ready to welcome a 10-year-old girl and her sevenyear-old brother into their family. Unlike the Kudlas, the Vilsmeiers would not need to travel to their children’s country of origin to adopt them.

There was only one problem. After being told they would be given months to prepare for their children’s arrival, they received a phone call from Welcome House on a

nothing happened … and nothing happened,” remembers Beth. “And then off they came— kicking and screaming.”

A Korean minister was on hand to translate: “These are your parents. Goodbye.”

Terrified by the sudden changes, the two children kicked and screamed as Vilsmeier’s husband and father carried each of them to the airport parking lot, and throughout the two-hour drive back to the children’s new home in Northeast Philadelphia. A semblance of calm wasn’t restored until the children arrived at their new home.

“When they walked into the house,” Vilsmeier remembers, “my daughter looked around and nodded”—her first sign of approval about her new living situation.

When Vilsmeier offered her daughter a new nightgown, she took off the clothes she had worn on the flight over and threw them in the trash. “And I thought, this kid’s smart. She knows she’s got a good deal here.” When they went shopping for clothes the next day, Danielle picked the most

The entire Vilsmeier clan descended upon Beth and George’s house. Bedrooms were painted and furniture assembled. By the end of the weekend, the children’s new home was ready.

Except that the children themselves were not necessarily ready for their new home. As the Northwest Orient flight from Seoul disembarked, the Vilsmeiers watched as babies and toddlers, escorted by Korean babysitters, were united with their ecstatic new parents. The Vilsmeiers waited for their children to walk through the gate. “And

expensive dress in the store, a memory that amuses Vilsmeier now, since in terms of Danielle’s tastes, “she hasn’t changed any in forty years!”

Challenges remained. The children needed to learn a new language, and not every school was capable of helping them become more proficient in English. “School was a nightmare,” says Vilsmeier. Many teachers were less than accommodating about her children’s language barrier.

“People don’t get it about international students—they don’t understand half of what you’re saying.”

But happiness and success eventually

followed. Danielle and Paul assimilated over time. “They don’t speak about Korea,” says Vilsmeier. “They see themselves as Americans.” Correcting other people’s misconceptions about their identity was an occasional source of amusement for the Vilsmeiers. “I’m his mother,” Beth would respond to questions about her relationship to Paul. “Doesn’t he look like me?” When people would ask her where she was from, Danielle would tell them she was Irish. Both children are now parents themselves; Paul is a father of one and Danielle the mother of three.

For the Vilsmeiers, the experience of adopting children has been a gratifying one, but not in the way that people sometimes assume. “People are always telling you how wonderful you are for adopting children,” she says, “but you don’t feel that way. You just think that this is what you always wanted to do.”

The joy and satisfaction of having a family has been just as true for the Kudlas.

A graduate of Nazareth Academy and a student at Bucks County Community College, Megan works as a teacher at a daycare center in Warminster. While international adoption had its challenges, Terry will always be grateful for its rewards.

“For a long time,” she says, “we just wanted a baby. I always wanted to be a mom. And Megan completed our life. She’s the best thing that ever happened to me.” 2 Matthew Jordan teaches English and writing at Holy Ghost Prep and is a frequent contributor to Holy Ghost Prep Magazine.

An Extended State of Bliss

Well, Bliss planned to go to medical school. Thank goodness for Ghost she never made it there.

“She was kind and gentle,” says Mike Jacobs ’01, a teacher and the director of information technology at Holy Ghost since 2006.

“No matter how crazy the kids would get, she always kept calm.

She explained things in ways we could understand. She was really good at reaching kids.”

Bliss was a junior at Holy Family College when the school’s academic dean asked her to head over to Holy Ghost to speak with Father Hanley, then the head of school, who needed a stopgap teacher. Bliss was adamantly against the idea. She still had schoolwork to do. “I said, ’No way.’ I didn’t have the time,” she says. But Sister Florence wouldn’t relent. She told Bliss to consider it a chance to gain some life experience. Not one to anger nuns or priests, Bliss went to visit Father Hanley. That was a rainy Friday. The following Monday, she started teaching.

“Father Hanley rearranged the schedules of students taking biology, so I could run from my classes at Holy Family, teach two classes at Holy Ghost, and go back,” Bliss says.

Marie Bliss remembers seeing Holy Ghost Prep students hanging out in the hallways and wondering why they didn’t have anywhere to go in between classes. That was too bad, she thought. There should be gathering places for them to study or rest or socialize.

She laughs about it now.

It was supposed to be temporary. And in Bliss’ mind, it was.

But every subsequent year, she came back, hoping to get a little better. After a while, there was no question about what her vocation was. The medical field was losing a potentially great doctor. But generations of Holy Ghost students had gained a remarkable instructor and mentor. Mike Pappadakis, who worked with Bliss during two stints as a physics, mathematics, and mechanical design teacher—in the early 1970s and then from 2004–17—experienced her commitment daily.

“Marie was very, very devoted to her students,” Pappadakis says. “She would stay late to help students, even those she didn’t teach.

“Her classroom was like a living room. She had curtains on the windows and a lot of plants. But it was a very educational environment. She brought the outdoors indoors. It was a comfortable, homey space.”

It wasn’t a case of the school’s neglecting its students. It was that there was no other female at Holy Ghost Prep when Bliss started at the school nearly 50 years ago, and the students were loitering in the hallways to observe the young college student who came to Ghost to do a favor for the headmaster—and ended up sticking around for 46 years.

was all set to head to Germany for a one-month trip his junior year. He was excited to work on his language skills and experience the culture. But he had a cash flow problem. He could take the trip, but he was going to struggle with any expenses that arose while in Europe.

“I was a spectacle,” Bliss says. “The priests didn’t even know how to talk to me. I was so uncomfortable; I didn’t even go into the lunchroom to eat at first.”

“She made sure I had funds, and she gave them to me out of her pocket,” Crenshaw says. “She knew my financial situation, and she made sure I had enough money for the trip, so I wouldn’t be poor.”

Times changed, but Bliss’ commitment to Holy Ghost remained the same: rock solid. When she finally retired at the end of the 2016-17 school year, she had taught biology for 46 years, impacted the lives of thousands of Ghost students, curated an in-school “zoo,” and brought an unparalleled love of nature and animals to the HGP community. There’s an old saying about how those who want to make God laugh should tell Him their plans.

Enter Bliss.

Crenshaw is a PennPORT fellow in the Developmental Neurobiology Department at the University of Pennsylvania and credits Bliss as “one of the reasons I am a scientist.” When he started at Holy Ghost, Crenshaw didn’t know many scientists, but as he progressed in Bliss’ class, he developed an interest in the scientific method and how it enabled people to test their

hypotheses and theories. “I still like that about science,” he says.

Even though he only earned a B in the class, Crenshaw was hooked. By the time the class ended, he thought he wanted to be a veterinarian, which made sense given the menagerie of animals in Bliss’ classroom, but he ended up a researcher. He enjoyed exploring science in her classroom and speaking with her about various subjects, both related and unrelated to school, during his free time.

“She made complicated topics very easy to grasp,” Crenshaw says. “She was always fair, and she listened to our opinions and encouraged dialogue. She wanted the students to drive how the class went.”

Bliss’ love of animals was legendary at Holy Ghost, and she had quite a collection in her classroom over the years. There were the usual suspects, like gerbils, hamsters, rabbits, mice, and guinea pigs. But there were some more exotic creatures, like a ball python and a Colombian boa constrictor. There was a tarantula named Morticia after the Charles Addams character, some ferrets, chickens, and a rooster. There were piranha and a pair of three-foot-long iguanas—Liz and Dragon Boy. Liz was “personable,” but Dragon Boy liked to escape his cage and force Bliss to form a posse charged with returning him to his home.

Eventually, liability concerns forced her to shut down the ersatz animal shelter, but plenty of students were able to benefit from the wildlife that surrounded them as they learned.

“I didn’t feel like she was teaching a class,” Jacobs says. “I felt like she was giving us a lesson in respect for animals and all living things.”

Nine years ago, Bliss started her own animal rescue, out of her minivan. “Four the Paws” has since helped place nearly 1,000 creatures in good homes. Bliss works throughout Bucks County, a pursuit that keeps her even busier than when she taught at Holy Ghost Prep.

“It’s a whirlwind,” she says. “What can I say? I thought when I retired, things would become easier.”

Her husband, Greg, wants her to get a truck, but Bliss has so

many things in the van that help her with her pursuit—cages, crates, forms, etc.—that she doesn’t want to surrender it. “I’m usually working in an emergency situation,” Bliss says by way of explaining how she comes upon the animals she rescues.

Both of her sons, James and Thomas McGoldrick, are in their 40s and are graduates of Holy Ghost Prep. James is a business manager and Thomas is a research scientist. If the craziness of her shelter pursuits ever slows, Bliss will spend more time with her family. For now, she will continue to help those unfortunate creatures find homes by continuing her care and concern for them that she developed as a youth and that only grew during her 46 years at Ghost.

What began as a one-off, a favor that wasn’t going to last all that long, grew into an avocation that influenced countless people.

Bliss clearly holds a unique and important place in the school’s history, and she doesn’t regret where her path took her.

“I can’t say I would change anything,” she says. “I came to the realization that [Holy Ghost] was where I was supposed to be.

From that point on, my story continued to unfold.”

And what a tale it was. 2

H

oly Ghost Prep senior Philip Lee’s plate is full, between an AP-laden course load, a time- and energy-consuming varsity sport in swimming, and his involvement in mock trial and Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics, and Science (TEAMS) competitions.

But despite the many demands on his time, Lee excels at everything he attempts.

“Philip has an amazing energy and passion for learning that is really contagious,” says Justin Goulet, the English department chair who has taught Lee in two classes during his first three years at Holy Ghost. “He never backs down from a challenge. Philip always puts forth his best effort in and out of the classroom.”

Lee, a Maguire Scholar who carries an overall 4.0 GPA, successfully navigated four AP classes (biology, calculus A/B, English, and U.S. history) and two honors classes (physics, Spanish 3) over the course of his junior year. What’s his secret? He simply models the work ethic he sees every day from his parents, who are caring for both Lee’s grandmother, who suffered a stroke in her native Vietnam back in October of 2018, and Lee’s sister Savannah, who has autism.

“My parents are amazing,” says Lee. “Whether it’s feeding my grandmother or simply giving them a break by spending extra quality time with my sister, I just try to help them in any way I can.”

Lee truly personifies the Maguire Foundation’s “Six Steps to Success.”

He is not only making an impact in the classroom, on the swim team, and in several clubs, but he fully understands the importance of setting goals and then employing discipline, passion, and preparation to achieve them.

“Philip is a very engaged student,” says Beth Bruno, the science department chair at Holy Ghost Prep. “In his biology classes, he is an excellent planner and executes his plans for optimum results.

He is always interested in all topics involving biology.”

His success isn’t limited to the classroom. Lee swam 2020 PIAA District 1 qualifying times in two individual events (100 breaststroke, 200 IM) and as part of the 200 medley relay, along with HGP teammates Patrick Lichtner, Fred Li, and Liam Farrell. And when the Holy Ghost Prep mock trial team needed someone to take on two roles, Lee stepped up and took on the heavier load.

“He has performed double duty with mock trial, taking on two witness roles. He also was a top-notch student in my AP United States history class,” says Tom Eckerle, the faculty moderator for Holy Ghost Prep’s mock trial team.

“He brought his skills at argumentation that are obvious in mock trial into his history essays, making his historical arguments powerful and persuasive.”

Much like he does academically or while on the blocks poised to enter the pool, Lee had a game plan when choosing his extracurricular activities at Holy Ghost Prep.

Zach Posivak ’20

rom a distance, you can’t really tell. It’s when you come closer that you realize what you’re seeing is really a drawing— not a picture. Even so, they all speak.

The frustration of a last-second miss comes through in Ben Simmons’ bowed head. The exhilaration jumps out in Joel Embiid’s flexed biceps, and the intensity of Brandon Graham’s eyes cuts through as the Eagles’ defensive end hunts for another quarterback.

Being able to dramatize those moments and athletes is a magic that Zach Posivak possesses.

What started as an escape, a hobby to get his mind off another trying test, has emerged into a real, bona fide talent for the Class of 2020 HGP graduate.

Posivak’s sports renderings have certainly grabbed a select group of fans—including some of Philadelphia’s best pro athletes themselves.

Hanging on his bedroom walls are his autographed works of Malcolm Jenkins, former Syracuse basketball player Malachi Richardson, and a signed football from Graham sitting in a display case that says, “Thanks for a great drawing.”

Posivak’s cultivated a passion at Holy Ghost Prep, transforming pictures into paintings and sketches. In early 2020, he was working on a portrait of Embiid in the hopes of getting it signed by the 76ers’ star center. Posivak, a recipient of Holy Ghost Prep’s prestigious Frank J. Marx V Memorial Scholarship (named in memory of Marx, a 2000 Holy Ghost Prep graduate who died tragically in 2004), produced the Embiid picture for a St. Andrew’s grade school student taught by Frank Marx IV’s second wife.

Posivak started drawing when he was a 12-year-old sixth grader at St. Gregory the Great in Hamilton, N.J. “I found out that I liked drawing and it was a good escape to decompress from a science or math test,” recalled Posivak, the valedictorian of HGP’s Class of 2020 who is now a freshman biology major on the pre-med track at Villanova University.

“I had art built into the curriculum and it allowed me to just sit and relax for 45 minutes. I was in sixth grade when I began drawing on my own. I would say that’s when I took more of an interest in art.

“At first, I didn’t think anything of it. I just liked it. I didn’t think I was any good; it was just something to do.”

A friend of Posivak’s older brother happened to be a cousin of then-Eagles kicker Cody Parkey. Posivak drew an image of Parkey kicking a field goal.

That started his sports art connection.

“It was the first thing I did, and it’s terrible when I look at it now, from an art standpoint,” said Posivak, who carried a weighted 4.4 GPA at Holy Ghost Prep.

“We gave Cody the picture, and I have a copy of the image myself, which he signed that says, ’Fly Eagles Fly.’ It’s funny, because Cody has become my favorite player through time. He’s really a super, super person.”

“I am interested in pursuing a career in engineering, law, or medicine,” says Lee. “So my participation in TEAMS has given me a better idea of what being an engineer entails. Joining mock trial has taught me what being a lawyer will be like. And I’ll pursue something related to medicine before I graduate from Holy Ghost Prep.”

Lee is one of 16 students attending Holy Ghost Prep through the Maguire Independent Schools Scholars program and is thankful for the opportunity.

“Without the Maguire Foundation, I wouldn’t be here at Holy Ghost Prep and wouldn’t have met all of the incredible people or had the great experiences I’ve enjoyed both inside and outside of the classroom,” says Lee. “I’ll be forever grateful to them.”

Holy Ghost Preparatory School is a partner with the Maguire Foundation, a philanthropic enterprise founded

by James J. and Frances Maguire in October 2000 that focuses its resources on education. The Maguire Foundation provides grants to grade school, high school, and college students so that they have an opportunity to benefit from a quality education. As part of this exceptional program, Maguire Scholars are required to achieve benchmarks in academics, class attendance, and community service.

The 16 Maguire Scholars currently attending Holy Ghost Prep are: seniors Ruben Aguilar, Philip Lee, Syed Naqvi, Tomas Vallejo Gutierrez; juniors James Corbett, Conner Gallagher, Mike Georges, and Corey Hecdivert; sophomores Joseph Conner, Jamal Lindsey, Damien Moore, and Emiliano Salazar, and freshmen Brandon Beatrice, Timothy Devine, Juan Perez Caicedo, and Logan Peterson.

“We are so grateful for our relationship with the Maguire Foundation,” says Holy Ghost president Gregory J. Geruson ’79. “Their philanthropy has allowed 16 tremendous young men to be a part of and thrive within our Holy Ghost Prep community.

We are looking forward to awarding the next four Maguire scholarships.”

draw, and most of the time he’s right,” Posivak said. “This past summer, my mom and my sister were pushing me to sell some stuff on Etsy (a website for amateur artists to sell their work). I don’t want to draw to get paid. I would put way too much pressure on myself, and it would become more work than leisure for me.

“I don’t want to take requests and stress myself out over it. Art and drawing is still fun for me.”

One of Posivak’s best works is an image on plywood of Los Angeles Dodgers’ shortstop Corey Seager hitting a home run. It’s so refined, it looks like a picture. Posivak gave it to one of the baseball players Zach coaches. Jonathan even approved.

For his birthday, he presented Jonathan with an image of himself.

Jonathan liked that one, too.

So super that Posivak has a replica Parkey jersey of every team the former Eagle has kicked for, from Auburn University to the NFL. “My dad rolls his eyes every time I buy another one,” said Posivak, who scored some key goals as a member of the 2019 Holy Ghost soccer team that reached the state quarterfinals last fall. “That was the first time. The picture isn’t very good, but as a kid, I thought it was pretty cool that here was this pro football player who liked my art. That started it. From then, I never stopped.”

Posivak’s process in finding a picture he wants to draw can be time-consuming, simply because he’s looking for the ideal scenario in his head. He prefers using teams’ high-quality images on social media for ideas. He carries a mini–sketch pad that he’ll draw an outline on, then convert that to an 18-by-24-inch sheet of paper.

He prefers to work with graphite pencil, then graduate to paint markers.

Most of his Eagles’ drawings are in Micron pen. Last Christmas, he received an iPad with an Apple pen. With the application called Procreate, which is a digital sketch pad, it allows Posivak to

zoom in and out, giving him varying perspectives of a sketch.

“The biggest challenge I think is seeking out an idea, and the patience of going over it,” Posivak said. “I’ll see a face and when I originally do it, it wasn’t what I expected. It doesn’t look good, so you have to have the tolerance of going back over and making sure that it’s accurate.”

Posivak actually sold a Justin Verlander piece.

Though, presently, art remains a fun diversion for him. He wants to keep it that way. It’s why he rarely takes requests or money for his work.

His truest evaluator, he says, is his 11-year-old brother Jonathan. If Posivak has any questions about a piece, he’ll ask him.

“I can show Jonathan a picture, and he’ll tell me the nose is wrong, or it doesn’t look like the guy I intended to

Ian McBride ’98

Cheeseburgersfor theHomeless

here was no revelation. No moment of great clarity. Ian McBride ’98 was simply driving home from his job as a salesman at Kennedy Ford in Jenkintown one year ago when he noticed the same two people who had been in the background of his commute for some time.

There was the man at Bustleton Avenue and Red Lion Road in Northeast Philly and a woman at Red Lion and Roosevelt Boulevard. They were homeless. Struggling.

Living minute to minute in an urban landscape that reduces people like them to wallpaper and takes away their dignity.

That was it. The skies didn’t part, and the angels didn’t sing. McBride was touched by their circumstances and decided to do something. He directed his car into a nearby McDonald’s and bought a couple cheeseburgers that he handed to the hungry souls. He didn’t blow a horn or look for an attaboy. He spent a few bucks and gave two people something to eat.

“When I gave it to the woman, she started to cry,” McBride says.

The next day, McBride bought 25 burgers and drove around the area, handing them out to anybody who looked hungry. He posted his efforts on Facebook and described it as an easy way to help those in need. A GoFundMe page followed, as did about $300 in initial donations. “Cheeseburgers for the Homeless” was born.

“It’s not something that’s major,” McBride says.

There have been no blaring headlines, although 6ABC did a spot on the program, and it was picked up by other ABC affiliates across the country. McBride enjoys the individual connections he makes when he hands out the burgers and other items—thanks to a variety of

donations, he can hand out bags that include clothing and other food—to people in need. What began small has been growing.

“Giving those first two burgers made me happy,” McBride says. “I could make people’s days a little better.”

McBride graduated from Holy Ghost in 1998, and four years later earned a degree in communications and marketing from West Chester University. He is a lifelong native of the Northeast, and still lives in the Parkwood neighborhood where he grew up. He started at Ghost after finishing grade school at St. Anselm. He remembers his time at HGP as one that included plenty of service and the knowledge that it is important to think of others.

“We did a lot of things for others there and learned to give back to people,” McBride says.

After his efforts received local media attention, McBride started hearing from all sorts of people who had been moved by his story. Suddenly, this was about more than just buying cheeseburgers. People started donating socks—which are reported to be the most important items the homeless need—hats, scarves, toothbrushes, and various food items. McBride is still buying the burgers, but now he is able to provide care packages that include a variety of items.

His GoFundMe page began with a modest goal of $300, but by February 1, nearly $1,500 had been donated, and the figure is climbing. McBride works in the poorest parts of Philadelphia, including occasionally Kensington, which has been devastated by the opioid epidemic.

“You see a lot of interesting things in the city,” he says.

Mostly what he sees are people in need of help. They’re

hungry. They lack clothing and basic supplies. McBride knows that he is making but a small dent in a gigantic problem, but he also knows that many good things begin small. If he can inspire people to donate or even get into the community themselves to help out, he will have made a difference. Because we don’t often spend the time to understand what those less fortunate are enduring, we don’t realize how smaller gestures can mean a lot. The experience has taught McBride that no matter what is happening in his life, he is pretty lucky.

“Every day we wake up, and everybody has struggles,” he says. “But they are usually nothing compared to what these people are going through.”

McBride plans to continue his efforts and hopes to gain more attention and support. He welcomes monetary contributions to the GoFundMe page, and he can connect with those who want to make donations in kind through the “Cheeseburgers for the Homeless” Facebook page.

He has already had visits from people he’s “never met before” who want to drop off bags of food and clothing, and he believes there are plenty of others out there willing to help him make a difference. It’s somewhat surprising to McBride that what began as a small gesture to two people is growing to impact so many others. But he isn’t focusing on the process. McBride is interested in the positive outcomes he can affect.

“I want it to get bigger and bigger,” he says.

early 300 HGP alums, including a few from Europe and many from all over the United States, came home to Holy Ghost Prep to celebrate 50 years of HGP forensics at the Holt Center on November 16, 2019.

The event served as a celebration of the school’s signature program and allowed the alums in attendance to raise a glass to the program’s two architects, John Buettler ’64 and Tony Figliola (the latter retired during the 2018-19 school year).

Expertly emceed by George Graffy ’82, the night began with a “50 Years of Forensics” tribute video. Following the video, a pair of alums, Dan Polsenberg ’75 and John Rodden ’74, offered heartfelt tributes to Buettler, followed by some remarks by Buettler himself. Mike Dahlgren ’10 and Jim Frawley ’97 offered recollections and warm thanks to Figliola, who then spoke passionately about the program and the forensics alums that he proudly called “my family.”

Buettler and Figliola both received Bensalem’s “Dedicated Service” award and citations from the Pa. State House of Representatives from Bensalem councilmen Ed Tokmajian ’94 and Jesse Sloane.

Campus news Decades of Excellence at HGP

Cindy McDonald and Karen Iuliano both retired at the end of the 2019-20 school year after enjoying distinguished careers in Holy Ghost Prep’s Admissions and College Guidance offices, respectively.

McDonald joined the HGP Admissions Office in 1999. She began in an administrative assistant role, but her energy and enthusiasm for admissions enabled her to dramatically expand her responsibilities to include school visits, teacher and principal engagement, running key admissions events, and parent/student recruitment—to name a few.

In addition, she renewed the HGP Educators’ Symposium, which brings many area elementary and middle school teachers to campus each year for professional development and a deeper understanding of Holy Ghost Prep.

“Cindy was one of the first people that every current HGP family encountered during the admissions process, and she always showed how our HGP Spiritan values align with how we respond to and care for our incoming families,” said Holy Ghost Prep president Gregory J. Geruson ’79.

Ironically, Iuliano’s career in college guidance began with an assist from McDonald. Iuliano had been working at Holy Ghost Prep in 2000 on a volunteer basis, when McDonald gave her the heads-up about a job opening in the College Guidance Office.

The rest is history.

“Karen leaves her position as associate director having literally helped 1,000-plus Holy Ghost Prep students and their families navigate through the critically important process of finding the right-fit college,” says Geruson. “Her counsel and candor were key in her efforts to make a difference for every student. Of particular note was her expertise in working with our students to secure appointments to the service academies.”

Both McDonald and Iuliano continued serving in their roles until the end of the school year.

McDonald, who was replaced by HGP alumni parent Kim Massari, helped finalize the Class of 2024. Iuliano completed all of her Class of 2021 recommendations, ensuring a smooth transition for new College Guidance employees Grace Opdyke and Joe Dembik.

“Karen and Cindy each have had two sons graduate from Holy Ghost Prep and have seen them use the lessons and values they learned at Ghost to start and build successful careers,” says Geruson. “Please join me in thanking Cindy and Karen for their decades of excellence at Holy Ghost Prep.”—Bill Doherty

Finding Our Niche For a second straight year, Holy Ghost Prep was named the No. 3 “Best Catholic High School in Pennsylvania” and received an overall grade of A+ from Niche, an organization that reviews and ranks schools nationwide.

Holy Ghost Prep received A+ grades in academics, college prep, clubs and activities, and sports. In addition to being ranked third among the 75 Catholic high schools in the state in Niche’s 2020 rankings, HGP was rated the No. 4 all-boys school in Pennsylvania and the 87th best Catholic high school out of the 1,158 schools profiled in the United States.

Making Sweet Music Eleven different HGP students received All-Catholic music honors and were chosen to appear at the Concert of Excellence on April 21, 2020 (the concert was cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak).

The number of students that HGP was able to successfully cyber-educate during the COVID-19 pandemic last spring.

Ghost Has It Covered Holy Ghost Prep’s highly effective College Guidance approach was the cover story of the October 2019 issue of Suburban Life magazine.

The College Guidance process begins when students are sophomores at Holy Ghost Prep, giving the counselors ample time to really know the students and their hopes and dreams. In addition, the College Guidance Office offers college tour trips each spring for current sophomores and juniors and also hosts a slew of coffee talks and information sessions to keep HGP families informed throughout the process.

This detailed approach works: Holy Ghost Prep currently has 10 students at the University of Pennsylvania and has other young men at some of the nation’s best schools.

The cover of last fall’s Suburban Life featured nine of the 10 Penn students (the 10th, James Nycz, was studying at Cambridge for the fall semester). The nine HGP alums pictured at the Ben Franklin statue in the heart of Penn’s campus were: freshmen Matthew Burst, Tom Forkin, and Albert Johnston-Ramirez; sophomores Eric D’Angelo and Matt Hoffman; junior Nick Posivak; seniors Gibby Brook and Joe Iwasyk; and Ezekiel Crenshaw ’04, a PennPORT Fellow in Developmental Neurobiology.

Seven Students Receive National Merit Recognition Seven members of Holy Ghost Prep’s Class of 2020 earned recognition in the 65th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

Colton El-Habr was named as a finalist for the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program. High school principals are also notified and provided with a Certificate of Merit to present to each finalist. El-Habr qualified for finalist recognition based on his 2018 PSAT results.

Van-tastic Support The Mothers’ Guild’s Annual Craft Show raised a record-setting $51,000 for Holy Ghost Prep. The money was used to help buy two new nine-passenger vans to help transport HGP students to the school’s signature events (i.e., forensics tournaments, robotics competitions, service trips, retreats, etc.) and to athletic competitions.

“The Mothers’ Guild works tirelessly year after year to make the craft show one of the premier events of the school year,” said Holy Ghost Prep president Gregory J. Athletic news Declaring Our Athletic Independence “We explored numerous options, and playing an independent schedule for the short-term future provides us with the best of both worlds—allowing us to remain in the PIAA District One and state playoffs while building more competitive schedules in each sport. In addition, being independent gives us flexibility to continue to investigate several new league possibilities in what is an ever-changing Philadelphia area athletic landscape,” says Holy Ghost Prep president Gregory J. Geruson ’79.

Declaring its athletic independence is a bold move for Holy Ghost Prep. The idea of going independent was discussed with every Holy Ghost Prep varsity coach, and all are in agreement that this is the best strategic move for the school at this time. Every Holy Ghost Prep coach is confident in his/her ability to build top-notch schedules that will have HGP student-athletes regularly test themselves against quality opponents all over the area.

After a thorough, yearlong analysis of Holy Ghost Prep athletics— which included input from HGP student-athletes, the entire coaching staff, current and alumni parents, several HGP alumni representatives, and with authorization from the school’s Board of Trustees—Holy Ghost Prep left the Bicentennial Athletic League (BAL) at the end of this school year and began to play an independent schedule starting in the 2020-21 school year.

Holy Ghost Prep was a proud member of the BAL since the 1970s, and the school greatly appreciates its longtime partnership with the league. With the recent departure of Devon Prep, and with both Lower Moreland and New Hope-Solebury slated to leave the BAL for the 2020-21 school year, all involved were in unanimous agreement that it was time for HGP to make a change as well.

“All of the coaches are really looking forward to this new opportunity for Holy Ghost Prep athletics,” says legendary Holy Ghost Prep basketball coach Tony Chapman ’71. “I am excited to work with our AD Craig Conlin to put together a top-notch schedule for our basketball program.”

Six of the school’s varsity sports were already competing outside the BAL (ice hockey, lacrosse, swimming, rowing, indoor track, and ultimate Frisbee) and all six of these programs are thriving. Starting this fall, the other sports followed suit.

“At the end of the day, this decision is about what’s best for Holy Ghost Prep and our student-athletes,” says Geruson. “Playing more competitive schedules will continue to raise our profile throughout the tri-state area. It will help make our student-athletes more accomplished players and will also help them develop their grit and a team-first mentality that will not only serve them well on the playing field, but also in life.”

HGP’s Next King of Swing Holy Ghost Prep, a school with a rich history of producing top-notch golfers, has its next swinging star on campus in junior Calen Sanderson, who has already verbally committed to play college golf at the University of Notre Dame.

Introduced to golf at the age of 8 by his father, Colin, a former golf pro in South Africa, Calen is currently the No. 1 ranked junior in the state of Pennsylvania in both the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) and Junior Golf Scoreboard (JGS) rankings, and had five top 10 finishes in AJGA tournaments in 2019.

“Calen’s ceiling is the top floor of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai,” says Holy Ghost Prep golf coach Mark Walder ’02, who was recently recognized by Golf Digest as one of the magazine’s “Top Young Golf Teachers in America.”

Blessed with the ability to pulverize the ball off the tee and an excellent iron game, Sanderson was the 2019 Bicentennial Athletic League Most Valuable Player as a sophomore last fall and tied for second at the PIAA District One Class AAA championships last October. The strong finish at districts qualified Sanderson to compete at states, but he had a conflict with an AJGA tournament and chose to play in the all-important junior tourney instead.

He isn’t resting on his laurels. Sanderson once again finished second in the 2020 PIAA Class AAA championships, qualifying to compete for a state title.

Once there, Sanderson wouldn’t be denied. He made eight birdies, including three consecutive on the 16th, 17th, and 18th holes, to win the 2020 PIAA Class AAA state title. Sanderson is the third HGP golfer to capture a state title in the last six years—joining Steve Cerbara (2015) and Liam Hart (2017).

In addition to Sanderson’s individual success, the Firebirds were one of the area’s top golf teams in 2020. They finished in fourth place at districts, thanks to the efforts of Sanderson, Cole Apeldorn ’22, Ryan France ’21, Tyler Schmidt ’21, and Nick Henn ’22.

“What impresses me the most about Calen is his ability to play well under pressure. He has played so many high-level tournament rounds that postseason golf is just a walk in the park,” says Walder. “Calen is the leader of the team, but he gets along with all of the other guys and is always looking to help them improve their skills.”

Big Man on Campus Next spring, Holy Ghost Prep’s first-year athletic director Craig Conlin will become one of 12 new inductees into the City of Philadelphia chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.

Conlin, who has already made an impact in just over a year at Holy Ghost Prep, certainly deserves the call to the Hall.

He had a stellar hoops career at La Salle College High School, where he was named first-team All-Catholic for three straight years and became the second leading scorer in school history with 1,202 career points. Conlin went on to La Salle University and starred on two NCAA tournament teams (1988, 1989) and another team that reached the 1987 NIT finals. He also scored over 1,000 points and is still the leading field goal percentage shooter in school history. After graduating from La Salle, Conlin played five years of professional basketball and taught in Cyprus and Ireland.

In addition to his bachelor’s degree in secondary education from La Salle, Conlin earned his master’s degree in sports management and athletic administration from Temple University in 1997.

Following years of teaching and coaching at Germantown Academy and The Episcopal Academy, Conlin began the next chapter of his career last summer. He is shepherding the Holy Ghost Prep athletic program in its final year of BAL competition before becoming an independent in 2020-21, a move that has kept Conlin quite busy as he teams up with the HGP coaches to build top-shelf schedules for next school year.

There are days when we head into work hoping the clock will move quickly, and we can get to the end of the shift. Everybody has that experience, no matter how much they may love their job.

Pat McFarlane is no different. Eight-plus hours of crunching data to find out how to position the left fielder against a particular hitter can get a little tedious.

Until…

“Sometimes you get to the ballpark and work on a project and see the results on the field that night,” he says.

The 2010 Ghost graduate is part of the Philadelphia Phillies’ analytics team, performing quantitative analysis and baseball research for the team he grew up cheering for. How great is that? As it turns out, pretty darn great. Though McFarlane once saw himself working for a defense contractor, he has taken his math and science background to the big leagues and is entering his third season with the Phils, helping a club that every year devotes more and more resources to gaining an edge through data.

Before the pandemic hit, McFarlane would follow up a day of poring over the numbers by stepping out into Citizens Bank Park to watch the game.

“It makes working a long day worth it,” McFarlane says. “I don’t have to go home. The ballpark is right outside my office door.”

McFarlane developed his love of baseball early on. He played the sport as a kid, and

his father was usually the coach. “That helped give me an appetite for the game,” he says. After completing grade school at St. Andrew’s in Newtown, he followed his brothers—Sean ’03 and Ryan ’06—to Ghost, where he bowled and played second base for four years. Oh, and he studied. A lot. Math and science, for sure, but also baseball.

around that might be related to a particular game. Or it could help inform a trade or other personnel decision. The exciting parts for McFarlane involve the people with whom he works, as well as the Phillies’ growing commitment to devoting the resources necessary to make the department as forward-thinking and successful as possible.

“The strategy and rules were enjoyable,” he says. “I enjoyed the physical part of playing, but I also liked to think through the strategy and nuance. That made it more interesting than other sports where that wasn’t as evident.”

“In the past, everybody had just about the same information,” McFarlane says. “All the teams had Statcast [an automated tool that measured players’ movements and abilities], but we’re starting to go away from established trends, especially in player development, and are investing a ton in information. Some teams have access to different kinds of mechanisms and data that are not ubiquitous across the league.

Some teams do have different data, just because they invest more in new technology, relative to other teams.”

McFarlane graduated in 2014 from Notre Dame with a degree in aerospace engineering—thus his feeling he would end up in the world of defense—and headed to MIT to study aerospace, aeronautical, and astronautical engineering. While there, he tackled a research project that required significant statistical work. He also read Moneyball, Michael Lewis’ paean to the data world of baseball—“That resonated with me,” he says—and decided to combine his two loves of baseball and numbers.

In the summer of 2015, he landed an internship with the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets, at a time when advanced metrics were just taking hold in that league. He earned his masters from MIT in 2016, and after spending some time doing research for MITRE, a global aviation safety firm, and Bloomberg, he heard about a job with the Phils and applied. He was hired in January 2018 and has spent the past two seasons with the club.

“The best way to describe the mandate of our department is to provide baseball operations, scouting, and the front office with research for data-driven decision making,” McFarlane says.

McFarlane loves baseball, but that isn’t the only thing in his life. Prior to COVID-19, he reported a pretty good pickup basketball culture” existed at the Phillies, and he was often found at 18th and Wallace Streets in Philadelphia—he lives in the city’s Fairmount section—taking it to the hoop.

He has also begun reading as much history and classical literature as possible. In early 2020, he was plowing through Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, which he often cracked open on the subway, creating quite an interesting look. While others were adhered to their phones or (maybe) reading a newspaper, McFarlane was following the exploits of Anna and Count Vronsky.

“It was a little bit of a different look,” he allows.

But not a bad way to get ready for a day at the ballpark.

Record-Setting Giving Tuesday

Food for Thought Thanks to an effort spearheaded by students and a pair of HGP alums-turned-faculty members Justin Goulet ’99 and Mike Jacobs ’01, Holy Ghost Prep delivered 634 pounds of food to Preston & Steve’s “Campout for Hunger” last December, benefiting Philabundance.

The group has already set a goal to bring at least 1,000 pounds of food to next year’s “Campout for Hunger.”

Another Successful Golf Outing On September 21 at the Spring Mill Country Club, nearly 100 golfers participated in the school’s 2020 HGP Golf Classic. Thanks to the generosity of the golfers and the tournament sponsors, the event raised $37,000 for Holy Ghost Prep athletics.

Holy Ghost Prep enjoyed a record-setting Giving Tuesday, raised over $40,000 from 136 donors on November 3, 2019. This school year’s Giving Tuesday campaign surpassed last year’s amount by almost $20,000. In addition to setting a record for dollars raised, the total number of donors (136) was also an all-time Giving Tuesday high.

In just its eighth year of existence, Giving Tuesday, a daylong giving campaign on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, has grown into a global movement of fundraising for nonprofit organizations.

This school year’s Giving Tuesday generosity allowed HGP to fully fund the following faculty-staff wish list needs: mission trip scholarships, a new crucifix for the Spiritan cemetery, an alto saxophone for the music department, and it raised nearly $9,000 toward the Holy Ghost Prep Annual Fund. In addition, Giving Tuesday gifts help partially fund the purchase of four additional microphones for our student actors, new hymnals for the Chapel, and four E-Sports gaming consoles for the school’s new E-Sports Club.

“Our goal was to reinforce that gifts of every size really do help support today’s students,” says Jackie Gear, director of annual giving and alumni engagement. “This year’s Giving Tuesday success was possible thanks to the generous nature of our alumni, current families, and friends, who are always willing to lend their support to Holy Ghost Prep.”

Tapping into the HGP Network Holy Ghost Prep hosted its annual Alumni Networking event on January 23 in the Holt Center.

More than 20 HGP alums came back home to Holy Ghost to mingle and connect with fellow Ghost grads.

A Trip Down Memory Lane Holy Ghost Prep held its annual class reunions in October 2019. A total of 86 guests were in attendance as HGP celebrated the graduating classes ending in 4’s and 9’s.

Those in attendance enjoyed the evening on campus, reminiscing with fellow alumni.

From walking down old hallways to visiting new and improved spaces, the evening seemed to rekindle some memories and the attendees left prouder than ever to be HGP alums.

Creating His Own Calling Card

Ed Wasser ’89

T

here are the bright lights of Broadway and the crimson carpets of L.A., and then there are the gray, gritty streets of Philly, where Ed Wasser ’89 has chosen to launch his filmmaking career.

So far, it’s paying off.

Wasser’s most recent short film, titled Gun, won Best Short of the Year (2018) at the Independent Shorts Awards (ISA) Festival in August 2019 in Los Angeles.

The international film festival, sponsored by the online industry database IMDb, received 5,000 submissions in Wasser’s short film category. These were narrowed down to monthly winners—Gun won Short of the Month for September 2018—and then to three semifinalists for the annual award.

In that final round, Wasser’s film was up against a German film and a British film; the latter’s cinematographer had been Stanley Kubrick’s director of photography and owns a “fistful of Oscars,” according to Wasser.

The 30-minute film, which focuses on two men struggling with their sexual identities and the intolerance they face, has garnered 10 best picture awards from film festivals around the world. John McNulty, one of the stars of the film, also earned the best actor award at the ISA Festival.

For Wasser, who has been pursuing an acting career for 25 years, the plaudits have come as somewhat of a validation.

Though he graduated from Barry University in Miami with a business degree, he was bitten by the acting bug during a class he took on a whim. In 1999, he moved to New York City to chase his dream.

“And I’m thinking, that was more than 20 years ago and you haven’t advanced?

And it was just so demoralizing. Is this what I really want to be—a guy who walks in the background all the time?”

So after five years, Wasser picked up and moved back to the Philadelphia area, intent on pursuing more theater and taking a real “nuts and bolts” acting class. He ended up at the Playhouse West Theater in Philadelphia, which changed his life, he says. The theater’s artistic director, Tony Savant, encouraged Wasser to kick down the door himself and create his own content.

“It just became clear to me, like Dustin Hoffman said on Inside the Actors Studio, ’If you’re going to wait for a job, you will die.’ You need to create your own stuff, your own calling card,” Wasser said.

In 2012, he took an online screenwriting class with Savant and a seminar with Alex Dinelaris, who won a screenwriting Oscar for Birdman in 2014. Dinelaris also happens to be Wasser’s former college classmate.

“The first movie I did was called Mad City, it was super ambitious and, now that I look back on it, was really bad,” Wasser said. “Now there, you can go one of two ways—you can say, ’Forget it, I’m done,’ which is what I would normally do. But

Wasser followed up with a short comedic film called Dog and then in 2016, the 13-minute Contrition, centered on a grief-stricken man against the backdrop of the September 11 attacks.

In 2018, after two years of writing, filming, and editing, Gun debuted at the Playhouse West in Los Angeles. Wasser casts himself in every production and goes by the professional name Edward William Wasser.

Although he likes being an “architect” of the work, Wasser said he considers writing to be a bit of a necessary evil to ensure he keeps acting. “If you want to act, this is the way you act a lot.”

His tenacity would likely be unrecognizable to some of his former Holy Ghost Prep teachers, he noted. “The easy way out academically is always the way I used to do things,” Wasser said.

He recalled English teacher Michael Ditchkofsky as someone who placed high expectations on his students, which annoyed the then-teenage Wasser. “Looking back, he was one of the best teachers I had, but of course I didn’t appreciate that at the time.”

Ditchkofsky passed away in early 2019, but Wasser had gotten back in touch with him before he became ill and sent him his work. “I’m so happy he got to see Gun before he died. He was effusive with his praise, which meant a lot to me,” he said.

Wasser is currently working on another short film, titled Leopards, which tells the story of an addict who gets out of rehab but “things don’t go well,” he explained.

Wasser’s films tend to be grim.

“It’s just that I don’t like a lot of happy endings. I don’t like unrealistic endings,” he said.

In his own life, Wasser is hoping for something a little brighter: “You’ve got to get excellent first and then things will start happening. I’m just trying to get to excellent.”

Anthony Palumbo is in the midst of his third year as a biology and physical science teacher at Nazareth Academy. Ironically, both Holy Ghost Prep and Nazareth Academy were recognized as among America’s best STEM schools by Newsweek.

2013 Kevin Malley is an engineer in the design department at the Philadelphia Water Department. He lives in Center City and is in the process of getting his master’s degree in environmental engineering at Villanova University.

Michael Gabrieli, a senior accountant at the public accounting firm Citrin Cooperman & Company LLP in Philadelphia, recently became a licensed certified public accountant.

He is a board member of the Bensalem Planning Commission for a four-year term and is the Deputy Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus Council #4279 of Saint Charles Borromeo. He also serves as chairman of the Finance Committee and board member of the Saint Charles Borromeo Elementary School’s Board of Limited Jurisdiction.

Two former Holy Ghost Prep lacrosse standouts, NJIT’s Grant Toller ’15 and Siena’s George Rusnak ’18, competed against one another on Feb. 29 at NJIT. Rusnak’s Saints took home a 12-5 win over Toller’s Highlanders.

Tim Brennan continues to ascend as a starting pitcher in the Texas Rangers’ organization.

A seventh round pick in the 2018 MLB draft after a successful college career at Saint Joseph’s University, Brennan was a combined 11-6 with a 3.84 ERA,82 strikeouts, and just 14 walks with two different Class-A minor league teams in 2019.

James Nycz, a senior at the University of Pennsylvania, studied at the University of Cambridge during the fall 2019 semester.

Capital and Endowment Giving Profile

+ The Holy Ghost Annual Fund is the yearly fundraising effort that runs from July 1 to June 30.

Capital giving and major gifts are dollars raised for a specific project or need that requires funding beyond operating dollars.

+ The Holy Ghost Annual Fund has a goal of raising $750,000 ($600,000 in restricted giving, $150,000 unrestricted giving) this year from alumni, parents, and friends of HGP. + The Holy Ghost Prep Annual Fund sustains every aspect of the Ghost experience and provides the elements that make HGP an extraordinary place for our students to learn and grow.

Endowment gifts are restricted funds that provide investment income to support scholarships and certain school programs.

Into Scholarship Assistance

The Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program is quickly becoming a popular way for many Holy Ghost Prep families and businesses to contribute scholarship dollars to our school. In the past few years, Holy Ghost Prep has gone from $50,000 in annual EITC support to over $400,000 in the current fiscal year. Individuals have taken advantage of this opportunity by making a direct donation to a Holy Ghost Prep Special Purpose Entity (SPE) created for this program. Donor families will receive 90% credit for that donation toward their annual Pa. tax bill. Holy Ghost Prep may then use those dollars to provide scholarships to students with financial need and/or students living within the boundaries of an underperforming school district as determined by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
