Principal's Message Holy Family Community, There have been plenty of challenges as we navigate through this school year but there have also been many unexpected blessings. In my 20 years in education I have never witnessed a student body so happy to walk into the school building. This school community remains a beacon of life. Holy Family's rich tradition of high academic success begins with our teachers, is due to the hard work of our students and would not be possible without the support of our parents. Thank you for your trust and confidence. Holy Family High School is a community of faith that is unwavering in its commitment to academic achievement. While the recent pandemic changed our lives, it did not change our mission. We continue to provide a Catholic learning environment that stresses academic excellence, fosters mutual respect, demands responsibility, and encourages self-growth. Every day, our students are led by faith-filled faculty members who are passionate about education and accomplished in their fields. They establish a faith foundation that ensures we have generations of strong Catholic leaders. Keeping Catholic education affordable remains one of our primary goals, but the reality is a Holy Family tuition does not cover the full cost of educating our students. The current gap between the tuition charged and the cost to educate is $3,500 per student. We are appealing to all our community members to help us bridge this gap. Safety Features

Holy Family implemented several safety features and protocols as we returned to in-person classes on Monday, August 17.

We were blessed by an incredible gesture from a supporter of Holy Family who made it possible for the school to install a top-of-theline bipolar ionization air purification system that actively filters out pathogens in the air.

Masks are required at all times and desk dividers were placed on desks and tables throughout the school to interrupt the spread of any respiratory droplets that masks do not contain.

Students are encouraged to have lunch outdoors or in the main gymnasium.

A thermal camera system was installed at the main entrance of the school that actively scans every person that enters the building and checks them for a temperature of over 100.4. Traffic in the hallways is one directional.

All class masses are held outdoors while proper spacing and capacity are observed in the chapel. Hand sanitizing stations were placed in every classroom and throughout the building.

We converted large spaces into classrooms including our cafeteria, library and even used outdoor spaces as classrooms.

Welcome New Faculty & Staff

Jack Assaf (Science, Math, Robotics) Jack received a B.S. (cum laude) in Mechanical Engineering from Notre Dame University. He also received an M.Ed from Notre Dame's ACE Teaching Fellows program. Jack comes to us from the Boys' Latin School outside Baltimore, Maryland, where he taught Physics and Honors Physics. He was also an assistant lacrosse coach and co-head coach of the Robotics team.

Meghan Reidy (World Languages/Spanish) Meghan attended Texas Christian University John V. Roach Honors College where she received her B.A. (magna cum laude) with a double major in Anthropology and Spanish & Hispanic Studies, as well as a minor in Writing. She then received her M.Ed from Notre Dame University's ACE Teaching Fellows program which sent her to St. Sylvester k-8 school in Chicago where she taught all levels of Spanish and coached the school's volleyball team.

Clare Nowak (Theology & World Languages/Latin) Clare received a B.A. (magna cum laude) in Music Performance and Theatre Arts from Benedictine College and her M.A. in Theology from the Augustine Institute. Clare comes to us from Frassati Catholic Academy where she most recently taught middle school Latin and English Language Arts. She also served as the middle school Speech coach.

Matt Sheber Howard (English) Matt received a B.A. in English and a B.A. in Spanish (summa cum laude) from Gonzaga University and his M.Ed from Notre Dame University's ACE Teaching Fellows program. The ACE Fellows program sent Matt to Mount St. Mary Catholic High School in Oklahoma City where he recently taught English and served as an assistant football coach and an assistant soccer coach.

Paula Colello (Art) Paula received a B.F.A. from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas and her M.Ed from Sierra Nevada College. She comes to us from the Clark County School District in Las Vegas where she most recently taught 6th grade Science. She is a two-time recipient of the Heart of Education Award and also a two-time recipient of the VFW Teacher of the Year Award.

Jenna Gallas (Volleyball Head Coach, Physical Education) Jenna received her M.A. in Elementary Education from Grand Canyon University and her B.A. in Exercise Science from Fort Lewis College. She most recently served as a Physical Education teacher at Bella Romero Academy in Greeley and was the assistant director and head coach of the Ballistic Volleyball Club in Broomfield.

Rebecca Cassidy (English) Rebecca received a B.A. (Summa Cum Laude & Honors) in Art and Architecture History and her M.A. in Teaching (AYA English/Language Arts) from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Rebecca comes to us from St. Agnes of Bohemia in Chicago where she taught English Language Arts and Social Studies. Prior to that, Rebecca taught English at Carl Schurz High School in Chicago and at Hamilton High School in suburban Cincinnati.

Matt McGuiness (History & Government) Matt received a B.A. in Philosophy and History from Metropolitan State University and his M.A. in Theology from Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio. Matt comes to Holy Family from Bishop Machebeuf where he taught Literature and History. During his 20-year teaching career Matt also taught at Nativity Faith & Reason in Broomfield. Matt served in the United States Army/ Army National Guard for 15 years prior to his Honorable Discharge.

Matt Petersen (English) Matt received his B.A. in English from Salisbury University in Maryland. He most recently taught English at St. John's College High School in Washington D.C. Matt began his career at St. John's as the Assistant Director of Admissions and also served as a coach on the baseball team where he primarily worked with the pitching staff. He has mentored 12 NCAA Division I pitchers and 3 MLB-drafted pitchers.

Steven Tarrant (Algebra, Geometry) Steven received a B.S. in Business Administration from La Salle University and his M.Ed. from Holy Family University in Philadelphia. Steven relocated to Colorado from the east coast to teach Algebra, Calculus and Advanced Math at Bishop Machebeuf and comes to Holy Family most recently from Arvada High School. Prior to his move, he taught Algebra, Geometry and Finance at Parkway Center City High School in Philadelphia.

Rhonda Lambrecht (Business Manager) Rhonda comes to us from DCP Midstream where she was involved in strategic financial planning and analysis, revenue accounting and performance improvement.

Karen Morrow, CMP. (Events Specialist) Karen brings more than 15 years of event, fundraising and donor relations experience from her time with the Archdiocese of Denver, Denver Art Museum and Alberta Development Partners. Karen will manage our special events such as the annual Tiger Gala, Tiger Fun Run, Tiger Golf Classic, and the Christmas Tree & Wreath fundraiser.

Jeff Beaton (Director of Communications) Jeff comes to Holy Family from Sprint, where he managed the companyâ€™s sports and entertainment sponsorships portfolio. He began his career at Sprint in communications and has also held public relations positions with the Kansas City Chiefs and the University of Nebraska Athletic Department.

Spirit Week & Homecoming Spirit Week and Homecoming weekend looked a little different this year but several Holy Family traditions still took place: Homecoming Court, Spirit Week themed dress days, a take-out chili dinner and even a virtual Homecoming dance. It was a week filled with school spirit. Lunch activities provided the student body with many fond memories and Holy Family’s cheerleaders and football team took to the field at Mike G. Gabriel Stadium for the first game of an abbreviated season. The game was also recognized as ‘Senior Night’ for our graduating student athletes.

2020 Tiger Golf Classic Holy Family hosted the 2020 Tiger Golf Classic on Saturday, August 8, 2020 at Colorado National Golf Club. 148 golfers enjoyed a beautiful day for golf and although we didn't have the opportunity to gather together following our time on the course, it was a successful event in raising funds for the Sr. Aline Dalton Scholarship Fund. The foursome of Daniel Ocel, Scott Rensch, Tim Hamersky, and Ben Rainey took home the first place trophy.

Megan Chavez won the women’s closest to the pin contest while Michelle Stevens won for women’s longest drive. On the men’s side, Kyle Helbig won both closest to the pin and longest drive. Driven by her passion to make Catholic Education available to any who desire to provide it to their children, Sr. Aline Dalton founded the golf tournament to raise funds for the Sr. Aline Dalton Scholarship Fund which awards

half-scholarships to deserving Holy Family students. Thank you to everyone who participated, volunteered and helped organize the 2020 Tiger Golf Classic.

4A State Softball Champions The Tigers started the season 2-2 against a gauntlet of fellow top-10 teams, then they went on a run for the ages. Holy Family reeled off 16 straight victories and not only claimed the inaugural Northern Colorado Athletics Conference title, but more importantly won their second Class 4A state title in three years. After the early setbacks to both Wheat Ridge and Mead in late August, the Tigers tightened things up and played great softball the rest of the way. A Tigers roster of just 12 players (due to the state restrictions during the pandemic) delivered a few lopsided results during the campaign. Perhaps none of those midseason results were more satisfying than a 15-0 shellacking of Mead that lasted just four innings. The Tigers welcomed in Silver Creek in the final regular season game of the year to determine the NCAC champion. It turned out to be the game for the ages. Holy Family senior Cassidy Chvatal and the Raptors hurler Maddie Kuehl dueled for nearly three hours, throwing well over 300 pitches combined and striking out 26 in a game that went 10 innings. The visiting Raptors took the lead 3-1 in the ninth, only to be answered by Carly Eldredgeâ€™s two-run home run in the bottom half of the inning. Holy Family would win it in the 10th and not only claim the NCAC title but earn a No. 3 seed in the state tournament.

The Tigers were down to their last out when junior Abby Edwards delivered a huge base hit that scored two and gave the Tigers the lead and propelled them to the championship game. In the title game, Edwards blasted a first inning grand slam that gave the Tigers a lead they would never

relinquish and behind the strong pitching of Chvatal and Jaelon Giron, Holy Family won the state championship 9-6. Holy Family Head Coach Moriah Nguyen was named the 2020 BOCO softball Coach of the Year and several Tigers were named to the All-Region team: Cassidy Chvatal, Abby Edwards, Carly Eldredge, Jaelen Giron, Ava Kuszak, and Tyler Whitlock. Chvatal, Edwards, Eldredge, Kuszak and Whitlock were also named All-Conference recipients.

Fall Athletics Recap Cross Country

Boys Golf

Cross Country looked a lot different in 2020. State and local regulations limited races to a maximum of 25 runners per race. Holy Family hosted five meets during the season.

Led by senior Jackson Grace, the Tigers had a successful rebuilding season. Grace would capture his first and only victory of his high school career in mid-September at a NCAC event in Longmont. Along with junior Ben Achziger and freshman Rudi Heitz, the Tigers had a trio that had a chance to make some noise at state.

The following week they would drop back down to 3A for the postseason, hosting the 12-team regional meet on their home course. Both the boys and girls won regional titles and a spot at the state meet. Senior Jack Culp would finish fourth and the girls placed all six of their runners in the first 11 spots. At the state meet in Colorado Springs, the Tigers saved their best for last. Culp, who had placed 37th and 14th in his two previous trips to state, shaved 17 seconds off his time from the season before and broke the 17 minutes mark. His time of 16 minutes, 59.6 seconds was good enough for a 10th place finish.

The girls had an even bigger day finishing second overall, despite not having a single runner in the top 20 of the race. Summer Norwell (23rd), Alyssa Wells (28th), Madeline Tapp (29th), Evie Boyd (30th), Elizabeth Boselli (38th) and Alyssa Jany (45th) were able to run together as a pack and brought home some hardware.

Under the direction of new coach Charles Shapiro, the Tigers got consistently better as the season went along and peaked at the right time. At the Northern Colorado Athletics Conference meet in Greeley, the boys finished fourth among a field of 4A teams and the girls finished second.

“They ran unbelievable and the reason why we did so well was because of our depth,” Shapiro said. “Madi, Alyssa (Wells) and Evie all ran together. Alyssa Jany had a tough start and she came on at the end and it was the depth. Summer ran outstanding, 20:46 on this course is incredible.

New Tennis Complex Inspired by their passion for the Holy Family tennis program, two generous donors have partnered with Holy Family to propel the tennis program forward by providing seed money for a new, outdoor tennis complex. Their commitment enabled us to move into the pre-construction phase in October. Additional fundraising is underway to keep this project advancing. Our goal is to have this impressive tennis complex completed by the end of Spring 2021. The new tennis complex is a first-ever concept of its size in the Archdiocese of Denver and it will feature seven new championship-quality outdoor tennis courts. The complex will provide our tennis program with a distinct competitive advantage and will be a valuable athletic resource for generations to come. The Holy Family girl’s tennis program is rich in tradition and has won the last three regional championships and is a perennial contender at the state tournament. The program is not only competitive athletically, but it is also frequently recognized with the Academic All-State Team Award as the program with the top cumulative team GPA.

This complex will be a game-changer for the Holy Family tennis program and will provide our school and students with a first-class facelift for the northeast part of campus, while providing benefits via the hosting of targeted athletic events. Currently, our student athletes face a safety risk as they travel over 4 miles for tennis practice and hosted competitions at an off-campus location. FALL 2020 | 13

Chaplain Spotlight Father Joe Grady

After school Father Joe can be found running with the cross country teams or at school events honing his photography skills – which are frequently displayed on the HF Campus Ministry Instagram page. He enjoys reading, hiking, CrossFit, and spending time with his beloved little pug, Doyle, whose picture hangs in the center of his office wall.

There’s a new Joe walking the Holy Family hallways, a path perhaps he's always been on. Father Joe Grady grew up in Broomfield the youngest of 3 boys to Holy Family Class of 1978 alumna Julie (Horvat) Grady and her husband, Frank Grady. His strong Catholic family was active in the Nativity of our Lord parish and he attended the parish’s school growing up, which he says planted the seed for his eventual vocation to the priesthood.

speaking in support of the land being zoned for the school, the land where we now sit.” Ordained in 2016, Father Joe spent three years at Colorado State University’s Catholic Campus Ministry, Ram Catholic, before receiving his assignment to Holy Family this past summer.

Holy Family High School has always been a part of him. “When I was just a kid, we would come to Holy Family’s original location to see my aunts, Chris and Katie, play basketball and volleyball,” Father Joe said. “I would watch for a while but eventually wound up playing underneath the bleachers.” But another of his vivid memories perhaps foreshadowed his path. “I was at a Broomfield City Council meeting with my mom who was there advocating for Holy Family High School to be built in Broomfield,” he recalls. “I was in grade school and I remember her FALL 2020 | 14

“I realized how special it was to be a part of this community and how deeply rooted I am here when I ran into Mike Gabriel Sr. and he told me that my grandfather was his high school football coach at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel,” said Father Joe. “I didn’t know that. It’s really amazing to think about.”

“The precise way Father Joe pursues expanding the spirituality and faith of Holy Family students is what sets him apart. He is a scholar, but he is also approachable, he is accessible,” said Holy Family Principal Matt Hauptly. “He is truly a chaplain for the students, we are lucky to have him.” Father Joe’s personality and sense of humor serve him well as he builds rapport with the student body. He has hosted games of Bingo during lunch that had the gymnasium sounding like the Tigers just made a game-winning shot. He’s always up for a game of spike ball and even recently arranged for Assumption Catholic School’s therapy dog, named Monsignor, to visit Holy Family. The memorable visit has students anxiously awaiting Monsignor’s return.

In addition to his mother, three of Father Joe’s aunts and one uncle graduated from Holy Family and two of his cousins are current students – senior Jack Culp and freshman Charli Culp. Students don’t have to search for Father Joe, he’s already a fixture in the halls and is easily found most mornings at the front school entrance greeting students as they arrive because, as he says, “all kids should have someone say hello to them every day.”

While he continues to find ways to connect with the students, Father Joe remains focused on delivering a faithfilled spiritual life on campus for both students and Holy Family’s faculty and staff. Respecting capacity limits, he offers Mass in the chapel and all class masses are celebrated outdoors or in the gymnasium. His homilies are geared towards the students, bringing a message that truly applies to them. He also expanded his availability to hear weekly Confessions.

Although the restrictions imposed by the recent pandemic forced the cancelation of the annual Kairos retreats, Father Joe and Mary Vulcani, Holy Family’s coordinator of Campus Ministry, delivered a series of day-long, inschool retreats. In October the seniors spent one day of prayer and reflection focused on discerning the future. The juniors have a similar opportunity with a day-long retreat in November. “Right now, the goal is to keep us afloat spiritually. We’ve all had a really intense several months, and I think everyone is just really happy to be back, to have a sense of belonging.” That desire to belong is something Father Joe is passionate about. “I was blessed to grow up with a stable FALL 2020 | 16

Church community that gave me a sense of belonging,” he says. “It’s one of those things that we’re born with. One of the deepest most important desires is the desire to belong to something. I think that what belonging is ultimately all about is loving something outside of myself.” “We belong, in a certain sense, to THE Holy Family. In Baptism, in Christ, we become adopted sons and daughters of the Father. We also pray daily to Mary as our mother, as Jesus gave his Mother to the Church from the Cross. So, if the Father is our Father, and Mary is our Mother, then yes, we are indeed also members of THE Holy Family.” “We’re made to belong to one another and to love one another. That’s what it means to be members of Holy Family High School and THE Holy Family. You love others, and you belong to others. There have been thousands and thousands of students taught in this school. Some just put their

heads down and got through, never really experiencing a belonging. Many others have really grown to love this place and love the community and love the great people here. Each individual person here can wake up in the morning and say, yes, today I will choose to belong to something bigger than myself. I choose to make a sincere gift of myself to others. Loving something more than yourself makes you fulfilled on a deeper level.” One thing is for certain, Father Joe Grady is making an impact on Holy Family High School – a path perhaps he started on when he was just a young child.

When Diana Ayala was a little girl, she would tell her parents that when she grew up, she was going to be a mermaid. In a way, she made that dream come true.

Diana, who graduated from Holy Family in 1992, opened her now popular Mermaids Bakery in Denver in 2008 in the heart of the recession and hasn’t looked back. “Before I opened the bakery, I had never baked a day I my life,” she said. Armed with little more than her great grandmother’s chocolate cake recipe perfected in Mexico and some of her mother’s hand-me-down recipes, Diana took a chance. She purchased an entire commercial kitchen and immediately began looking for commercial space. During her initial trip into the city to look at commercial real estate, she came across a great location on Champa Street. Rent was low and it was just the right amount of space - 600 square feet - to start her venture.

Drawing from the entrepreneurial spirit she learned while working at her dad’s autobody shop in high school, Diana began putting in 16-hour days at the bakery by herself, simply because she couldn’t afford to pay an assistant. The cakes were great, the cupcakes were fabulous, and she was selling out of her products on a daily basis.

I know I worked hard, but I don’t even know where it comes from. I had never baked a cake before starting the shop. It just comes out of my hands. Jesus loves me, this I know.”

However, after a year in business she came close to giving up. “I just couldn’t keep up anymore, I was alone, and I couldn’t afford to pay anyone,” Diana said. “I prayed for an answer, I remember that day well.” The following week she received a call that would change the fortunes of her business. Johnson & Wales University was interested in sending her a series of interns for hands-on experience. The initiative would allow her to train talented bakers and delegate some responsibility around the bakery.

Speech and Debate Speech and Debate in some form has always been a part of Holy Family High School, but it wasn’t until 2015 when Speech and Debate became an academic class offering that it really started a resurgence. Enter teacher Lisa Cillessen, who arrived at Holy Family that same year and took over the program and immediately began recruiting students. “Rebecca Barger (English Department Faculty) was instrumental in bringing Speech and Debate from an after-school club to an official academic class,” said Cillessen. “We are now at a tremendous advantage in the Speech and Debate community because of it.” Cillessen used her first year to identify students who might be interested in joining the program. Prior to it becoming an academic class, Holy Family had just two students involved. By 2016, there were 60 students – about the same size as the varsity football program at the time. “With the caliber of students we have here at Holy Family I knew we could be successful,” she said. “Theology teachers were already teaching argumentation, we have strong English and History departments and our Theatrical program is phenomenal – all of it helps in building skills for Speech and Debate.” There are currently 67 students on the competitive Speech and Debate team across varsity and novice levels. In addition, as a required class during their sophomore year, all Holy Family students are developing important skills in reasoning, speaking and listening, critical thinking, researching, problem solving and writing. “The reason I give up so much of my life to this program is that it imparts the skill of communication unlike any other thing students can take, or participate in, during high school. They learn how to talk, how to articulate what they think and that is like a super power. It enriches your life - in every part of your life.” Speech and Debate is unlike most school activities or clubs in that it provides many skills that can be used in everyday life. It helps students with their public speaking skills, thinking on their feet, and acting in a professional manner. The Holy Family team is a force to be reckoned with at competitions. Since 2016, Holy Family has qualified 27 students to the National Speech and Debate Tournament – the largest academic competition in the country. That accomplish alone places those students

in the top 3% nationally among all Speech and Debate students. The team typically competes in 15-18 competitions a year. Competitions are tough as many competitors have learned to find the weak points in opponent’s arguments. As in any competition, hours of preparation gives participants a distinct advantage.

Some Holy Family students spend as much as two hours a night in preparation – in addition to their existing workload. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced all events to be virtual this season, but that hasn’t stopped the Holy Family team from bonding. “On competition days there is a buzz that hangs in the air and they become a family,” Cillessen noted. “They rally as a crew to watch each other as they advance in the competitions. They support each other. They practice last minute with each other. They make relationships that cross a lot of divides that are normally present in any high school. You’ll see athletes being good friends with non-athletes, we also have a lot of students developing strong friendships with kids in other grade levels. For many students Speech and Debate is a safe home for them, it’s about being a part of a community where they feel comfortable.” Speech and Debate is a sanctioned Colorado High School Activities Association activity, however there are no official team rankings – although Holy Family is widely considered a top 10 team in the state. “I’m so proud of where the kids have taken this program," added Cillessen.

Speech and Debate Cillessen is quick to credit assistant coach and Holy Family alumnus Seth Willden ’10 on the program’s surge in popularity and success. “Seth is tremendous. I am so thankful he decided to jump on and become part of this. His dedication is remarkable. He is such a big advocate of the program, although he never was in Speech and Debate during his years as a Holy Family student.” “Holy Family Speech and Debate did not exist in the way that it does today. Knowing now about the program, what it offers to our students, and the skills it emphasized, it most certainly would have been my extracurricular home in high school,” said Willden. “My work today centers on creating a program that I would have wanted to be a part of as a high schooler.” The 2020-21 Holy Family Speech and Debate team is led by 4 senior captains: Mikey Dolph, Megan Smolky, Liam Slavin, and Brinley Erbsland. Their leadership has fostered a strong culture within the program that has been vital this season given the virtual competitions. There are three main types of competitive events Holy Family Speech and Debate team members participate in: Debate, Speech, and Interpretation of Literature. In Debate there are three categories: Lincoln-Douglas, Public Forum, and Congressional. In Speech events there are three categories: Original Oratory, Informative Speaking, and Extemporaneous Speaking. Interpretation of Literature offers: Poetic, Dramatic, Humorous, Duo, and Program Oral Interpretation. FALL 2020 | 20

High School Speech and Debate has become a measuring stick for students eager to get into colleges. Speech and Debate bolsters college applications as it is attractive for college admissions officers. Debating prowess shows intelligence, poise, and is associated with leadership traits. Speech and Debate is a valuable activity for students of all skill levels. Most obviously, students build confidence speaking in public and expressing their ideas eloquently. That comfort speaking in front of others is useful in so many areas of life, from interviews to school presentations to discussions in college settings. But the benefits of debating are not limited to the skills built while students are speaking—the preparation for competition teaches critical thinking and research skills, as well.

“Our students present Catholic social teaching and world-views to the larger Colorado high school community. We have the opportunity to interact with students and schools who differ from us and it gives our students the opportunity to practice empathy and understanding for others,” said Willden. “They study current events, acts of legislation, and speak on issues affecting the public. They tell important stories, and encourage others to do the same. In short, Speech and Debate offers our students entry into the public sphere, and affords our students opportunities to grow in speaking and listening skills. We prepare them for the college lecture hall. We prepare them for their professional futures. We prepare them to be active participants in representative democracy. We prepare them to be a voice for the disenfranchised. And it's fun!”

A Diaper Drive through Catholic Charities' Bottom Line Diaper Bank brought in a total of 13,938 diapers – nearly doubling our goal.

The Holy Family Fall Music Concert took place on October 22. The virtual performance was broadcast on Holy Family’s YouTube channel. Director of Choral Music, Talise Chandler, and Director of Instrumental Music, Laura Wiarda, overcame many challenges presented by this school year and found a way to prepare their students for an amazing performance.

Student’s in Mr. Montgomery’s Forensics class conducted mock crime scene hair and fiber analysis on October 21. The Broomfield Police Department helped to stage several outdoor crime scenes. A new plaque was unveiled in the main gym to honor former Holy Family student Colin Kostelecky. Colin passed away in 2019, but his strength in the face of incredible adversity touched so many of us. Colin's mother, Mona, and sister, Emma, attended the blessing.

With attendance at home football games restricted to a limited amount of family members, Holy Family games were broadcast on the NFHS Network. Seniors Liam Slavin, Jack Culp, Megan Smolky, along with freshmen Jack Flaherty, provided play-by-play and color commentary.

Health and Safety protocols prevented use of indoor locker rooms for home football games. Temporary tents were set-up outdoors serving as the team’s locker room.

Seniors Maddie Rutherford and Lauren Davis presented Michelle Gallegos from Marisol Health with baby blankets, clothing, and necessities that were collected during the diaper drive on October 15.

Planned Giving Father Jim Cuneo '55

Father James Joseph Cuneo was affectionately known as “Jimmie Joe” growing up and then, after ordination to the priesthood, as “Father Jim.” He attended Holy Family Grade School and graduated from Holy Family High School in 1955 and then immediately entered St. Thomas Seminary. After his ordination in May of 1963, Father Jim spent time at various parishes throughout Colorado. He had the desire to join the military in 1974 and received special permission from Archbishop James Casey to join the military for a span of 20 years. Father Jim became a world-wide chaplain in the U.S. Air Force. Following his time in the military, Father Jim came back to the Archdiocese of Denver until he retired on April 18, 2002 (his birthday). However, like most retired priests, Father Jim did not stop serving and continued helping people across the Denver area until his passing in 2019.

Father Jim had a strong love and devotion to the Lord and to his faith. He was truly a dedicated priest who helped all who came to him in need. He would tell his family often how much he loved being a priest. He loved his family. Father Jim thoroughly enjoyed family gatherings and officiated over many religious services for family members. “We looked up to him for wisdom, counsel, and guidance,” said Bob Cuneo, Father Jim’s brother. “He always seemed to have a way to put things in perspective and ease serious concerns or tense

situations. He had a certain calmness about him.” In addition, Father Jim loved his country and the soldiers and their families who were serving. “As a parish priest serving as a teacher at Cathedral and Annunciation High Schools, he had several of his former high school students die in the Vietnam War,” his brother noted. “These tragedies prompted him to receive permission to enter the military. He truly wanted to minister to the soldiers on the front line and to the families living on military bases.”
