A MESSAGE FROM TOM LENGEL P’12 Thomas G. Lengel P’12

Dear Friends and Supporters, Saint Thomas Aquinas said that there are three ways we can incur the sin of anger: the first is excessive anger, the second is misdirected anger, and the third is deficiency of anger. I am writing this in mid July, while the country struggles to deal effectively with the COVID-19 virus, and with how best to support people of color, for whom “liberty and justice for all” has never been consistently enough part of their lived reality.

I hope and pray that we do not suffer from a deficiency of anger in our response to either of these issues, especially regarding the systemic racism that people of color have had to endure.

We held two virtual town halls in early July—one for past parents and alumni, and the other for current parents. Many people of color participated and shared both their positive experiences at Holy Child School at Rosemont and ways that we fell significantly short of treating them with “dignity and respect.” When we recite the Confiteor at Mass, we ask forgiveness “for what I have done, and for what I have failed to do.” Those words resonate with me as a Christian and as Head of School. The opposite of racism is not “not being racist.” It is being anti-racist.

In order to better support our children and families of color at Holy Child, past, present, and future, I need to be more intentionally “antiracist.” I invite you to join me in that journey, to reaffirm our belief that each of us “is made in the image of God” and thus to help all of us “be our best selves” as Cornelia Connelly enjoined us to be.

We very much were “our best selves” last spring, when we invented and implemented our distance learning program, HC@Home. The faith and support of our school community allowed this program to have the dynamism that it did. This issue of Cachet centers around community and how our strong community here impacted not only, HC@Home, but also other important areas of our school as we dealt with (and continue to deal with) this pandemic.

Lastly, Cornelia reminded us that “generosity, generosity, generosity, must be the beginning and ending of our life.” This issue of our Cachet magazine includes our Annual Report, and that Annual Report bears witness to the extraordinary generosity of this Holy Child community.

We simply could not Nurture Excellence in [this] Joyful Catholic Community as effectively as we do without your support, especially in the midst of a pandemic. Please know how grateful I am for your largesse, and how much it impacts the children entrusted to our care.

ADMISSIONS CORNER

FINDING STRENGTH IN ADVERSITY Christine Dymek Director of Admissions and Marketing

Long-ingrained in my mind are the words of my father, who paraphrased Greek philosopher Epictetus in saying, “Difficulties show a person’s character.” A large part of my personal ethos, this mindset has guided me through most of life’s obstacles; a reminder that while I may not have control over the things happening around me, the ability to manage my response is my one great superpower. In the face of every difficulty is choice, and it is here that I have the opportunity to reflect, learn, and grow.

In the past few months, I have been immensely touched to see this personal principle mirrored in the response of the entire Holy Child community as it navigated the unprecedented string of events that have shaped 2020 to date. I have witnessed proof that difficulties show not only a person’s character, they reveal, too, the character of an institution and its entire community. And never have I been more proud to be part of the Holy Child family.

As I write this, seven months into a global pandemic and following a series of tragedies that have sparked a societal movement to engage with and address issues of racial injustice, I reflect on how Holy Child has risen to face these moments with unity, courage, compassion, and commitment. There have been difficult decisions and hard, honest conversations over these past few months, but I know that we have emerged with a wisdom and strength that will elevate both our program and community in the years ahead.

With the forced closing of our school in response to COVID-19, I witnessed the relentless commitment of our teachers as they adopted new delivery mechanisms, accommodated lessons to a virtual learning environment, and quickly mastered unfamiliar technology— all while tending to the emotional needs of their “classroom kids” (because they are so much more than students). Equally impressive was the tremendous resilience and loyalty demonstrated by our families as their own lives were turned upside down. We called upon them to support their child’s virtual learning (often while juggling their own work demands) and in the hallmark style of a Holy Child parent, they responded with absolute commitment, understanding and support. Behind the scenes, the staff that runs the business of Holy Child pivoted in a day’s time to move their offices online; and through months of closure they supported the day-to-day operations of the school without missing a beat.

Together we thrive, and in a year where other schools are challenged by declining enrollment, we look forward to welcoming more than 50 new students and 30 new families to the Holy Child community. I have no doubt that the 2020-2021 school year will again be one for the ages, but I have faith that it will be more greatly defined by our growth, strength, and unity than the challenges we face. Enjoy the stories in this issue of Cachet, as we celebrate this very special community we are blessed to call our own. D

Navigating Unprecedented Times Through Faith and Community

“First to bear adversities with endurance —then with willingness—then with joy,” urged Cornelia Connelly, Foundress of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus. Never did these words prove truer than in the moments following the governmentmandated shutdowns of March 12, 2020. How would our vibrant, interactive school community weather this unprecedented storm while apart? After much careful planning and consideration, Holy Child School at Rosemont launched our distance-learning program, HC@Home, and while virtual school required a significant pivot, through faith and the strength of our faculty, staff, and families, we were able to not only retain the inherent sense of nurturing community, but also to strengthen it during this difficult time.

Gone were in-person assemblies, field trips, and yearly traditions, but adversity gave birth to creativity. Grade 2 hosted a grade-level virtual prayer service, Falcons visited a classmate’s animal farm through Google Classroom, and Middle School competed in a virtual field day in their Advisory groups. Morning prayer, project presentations, and classroom routines lived on, albeit in Google Classroom versus our Academic Building. Holy Child parent Natalie Hoffman P’25’27, whose daughter Matilda was a new student last year, was impressed with the transition from in-person to distance learning. “We really appreciated the efforts the school made to help the kids feel connected. Matilda was new last year, so this was especially important to us. She loved Community Time with her seventh grade buddy. Matilda also did a collaborative story writing project with a classmate that involved lots of extra planning sessions and out-of-class fun.” Head of School, Tom Lengel P’12, is also

proud of the overall HC@Home experience that Holy Child was able to provide. “I couldn’t be more proud of our teachers and Division Directors. There was no playbook for this. Within two weeks, we had invented a brand new way of teaching and learning. We tweaked it along the way, but in typical Holy Child fashion, we rose to the challenge and delivered a great experience for the children.”

With effort and ingenuity, traditions such as our Student Council speeches and a paired down version of our Middle School Musical High School Musical Jr. took place digitally and new opportunities for mingling arose such as the virtual Parent Happy Hours and community prayer. While providing a strong academic program was the primary aim of HC@Home, maintaining the strength of community was of equal importance. “I was so incredibly proud of the way everyone came together to maintain the sense of family and connection that is so unique to Holy Child,” said Director of Admissions Christine Dymek. “I spoke to so many community members who were dedicated to maintaining our ties to one another; parents who went above and beyond to work individually and with the school to host events and fun activities that would allow our kids and families to connect. They say that true character is revealed during moments of adversity, and never have I seen a greater display of loyalty, hope, optimism, and compassion.”

We had a number of positive experiences. Mrs. Gambescia did a wonderful job of quickly training the kids and techchallenged parents like me on the new platform so that we could get back to learning. But I think what was most touching to me, as a parent, was her availability to help or just to chat with Matilda in office hours. It never seemed like a burden even though I can only imagine how much extra work the transition to virtual learning demanded of her and all the other teachers. We loved Mrs. Stuart’s book club. We loved collecting the necessary household supplies for Mrs.

While strength of community was fostered through the programming we offered (see the list on page 7 for just some of those opportunities), it was the faculty, staff, and parent community that maintained virtually what we formerly had in person. As alum and PreKindergarten parent Persia Ali ’96 P’30 explained, “Our parent community got closer as well. We would check in on each other to find out why a child wasn’t in class or did Google Meet troubleshooting.

Even though we were virtual, I bonded with many moms that I might not have been able to had the kids been in the building.”

As months passed and academic lessons concluded, we were able to safely continue our milestone celebrations of Commencement and First Holy Communion in person. Once again, with the support and creativity of our faculty, staff, and families, our students were able to experience a year that, while different, was a testament to the power of what a community can do when they persevere with faith and a shared vision. Once again our Foundress’ wisdom rang true, “Remember, of yourselves you can do nothing, but in God and for God and with God you can do all things.”D

I think the biggest positive for me was being able to see how much London had learned during the school year as I oversaw completion of her assignments. I was extremely impressed and grateful to the teachers for setting her up for success in and out of the classroom.

Colin and Fiona did still feel very connected to Holy Child last spring, despite not actually being there! They seemed to really enjoy the Advisory sessions, which gave them a chance to talk with the other kids about everything going on around them. I particularly loved hearing them laugh out loud about whatever was happening on the screens! Holy Child did a really good job of keeping them accountable to their education, while being very sensitive and aware of what an extraordinary situation the kids—and the whole world—were in. The pivot to being online was pretty seamless, and we didn’t experience any issues with

Campus Expansion SUMMER 2020

Thanks to the generosity of our community, we have successfully completed the first stage of our campus expansion by renovating our Kindergarten classrooms and creating a Lower Patio walkway and seating area. To increase the size of our two Kindergarten rooms and to move the students closer to the Falcons and PreKindergarten classrooms, our Schneider Library has been moved to the Lower School hallway and the Kindergarten classrooms have moved to the previous location of the library in Broderick Hall. The Kindergarten Suite includes an ante room at the entrance of the suite (to ensure space between Broderick Hall and classrooms to minimize noise distraction), a designated restroom, a room with a sink for projects, and two designated Kindergarten classrooms. The classrooms offer high ceilings and windows to ensure the spaces are bright and spacious.

Our new Lower Patio walkway connects the Cafeteria and Early Childhood playground with the Lower School playground. Brick and stone walls form a seating area on either side of the staircase. Our students love using this area during recess and outdoor activities! D

Celebrating the Class of 2020 in Unprecedented Times

On Thursday, May 28, twenty-nine Grade 8 students received their diplomas and became Holy Child School at Rosemont’s newest alumni during a drive-up style outdoor graduation ceremony on Holy Child’s campus.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Class of 2020 did not end their eighth grade year as the graduates before them, but Holy Child was determined to make the yearly in-person traditions the students missed equally as memorable virtually. Our students were honored during a virtual Honors Convocation Assembly; the students enjoyed the Grade 8 Prayer Service with their parents as they were welcomed into the Alumni Association; a condensed version of our Spring Play, Snapshots from High School Musical, Jr., premiered on Facebook in the beginning of June with performances from our students in the comfort of their homes, just to name a few special moments.

To give our students the opportunity to graduate together as a class, while still following safety guidelines, Holy Child held their 65th Commencement as a drive-up style graduation ceremony in the Broderick Hall parking lot. The commencement was live streamed to the community and included both live and pre-recorded videos, which our graduates and their families watched from the safety of their vehicles. Some of the pre-recorded videos included messages of congratulations from our younger students and a short service performed by Reverend Robert Murray O.S.A. Head of School Thomas G. Lengel P’12, Associate Head of School, Diane Hren, and the two Student Council Co-Presidents, Isabella Casey and Jack Gallagher, spoke live during the event.

“For many years at Holy Child, our class has been so close.

We have countless memories together and have made so many friendships that will last lifetimes,” Co-President Isabella Casey said as she addressed the Class of 2020. “Each of us has made a difference at Holy Child, whether we’ve been here for 10 years, three years, or anywhere in between.”

On behalf of her classmates, Isabella thanked the faculty for all they have done for the students over the years, especially during their eighth grade year. “They have taught us life lessons that we each value every day. We have learned to be hardworking students and loyal friends. We have learned to follow our dreams, and to make the right decisions. To respect others, and to have faith during hard times.” Isabella continued, “They have worked so hard to give us the ending of the eighth grade year we had all been hoping for. Even though we weren’t physically together in school for the end of the year, we have been given numerous opportunities to virtually spend time with our classmates.”

Applause during the ceremony was replaced with the enthusiastic sound of car horns and cheers. The students sat on chairs in front of their vehicles while they waited for their names to be called to receive their diplomas. After receiving their diplomas, three of the graduates were recognized as receiving scholarships to area high schools. At the end of the ceremony, our sixth and seventh grade students continued the yearly tradition of wishing the graduates well by virtually singing “Peace My Friend.”

During his remarks, Co-President Jack Gallagher reflected on how the class has always lived up to every challenge that came their way and how they have always persevered. “This is the reason that I would compare our class to the Dream Team. We have our Michael Jordans, our Magic Johnsons, and our Larry Birds. The talent and potential inside of this parking lot is astronomical. This is why I have

so much respect and love for this class and that I am beyond sad to leave this class and this place.”

Jack continued, “I think graduation should not be looked at as much as the ‘final goodbye,’ rather we should look back on our time together,” Jack said as he reflected on the special moments throughout the years, such as the sacraments they received in Grade 2, their field trip to Citizens Bank Park for a Philadelphia Phillies game in Grade 3, and the Greek operas they wrote and performed in Grade 6.

While reflecting on her time at Holy Child, Isabella expressed her gratitude toward her fellow classmates. “Thank you to the eighth grade class, for making my 10 years here so special. Though we will go our separate ways next year as we move on to the next chapter of our lives, we will forever keep our friendship and never forget all the special times we spent together.”

After a virtual recessional at the end of the ceremony, the students and their parents drove around the school and the surrounding neighborhood in a car parade to celebrate the new graduates and say their final goodbyes as Holy Child students.

“We always pushed each other to be better. We always held each other accountable and we were there for each other,” Jack said. “So to my Class of 2020, let’s go take on the world and all the challenges that come with it. I am so thankful to be part of such a great class!” D

First Holy Communion:

Celebrating the Class of 2026

The Class of 2026 received the Sacrament of First Holy Communion on Monday, July 13, 2020 during a Mass held at Saint Thomas of Villanova Rosemont Chapel, presided over by Reverend Robert Murray, O.S.A. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the ceremony, traditionally held in the spring, was postponed until the summertime. Grade 2 Teachers Mrs. Cassidy and Mrs. Murphy prepared the students to receive First Holy Communion through virtual practices, beginning in April. The students performed their duties flawlessly, leading those present in song, readings, and prayer, without having any in-person rehearsals.

Grade 2 Teacher Judy Cassidy ’59 P’85’86’90’93 has been preparing our students for First Holy Communion for over 40 years. Since she

will be moving to a new part-time assistant position in Grade 1 this year, Judy received a standing ovation from our community during the Mass to thank her for all that she has done for the Grade 2 students over the years and to celebrate her final First Holy Communion as a Grade 2 teacher.

First Holy Communion marked the second of two sacramental milestones for the Class of 2026 during the 2019-2020 school year; the students received the Sacrament of First Reconciliation in December.

Although the students were physically distant from one another during the Mass and were required to wear face masks, the sense of community and the joy exuding from the students and their parents was truly present. D

A Farewell to

Lynn Gosnell P’00’02’05’06 If you’ve been a part of the Holy Child School at Rosemont community in the past 35 years, you probably have encountered Lynn Gosnell P’00’02’05’06.

Lynn began teaching in our Middle School and spent nearly 25 years as a first grade teacher. Since the beginning of her career, Lynn has run her classroom with a specific philosophy in mind. “I wanted to make learning fun,” said Lynn. “That has been my goal since I went to college.

If learning is fun, you’re halfway there.”

Her philosophy was evidenced in her love for dressing up each Halloween as a different witch, in starting what is now our after school club Sports, Fun, and Games, and in choreographing the dancing for the Christmas Concert for many years.

Additionally, Lynn initiated and coached our school swim team and established both what is now our Diversity and Inclusion Committee and Service Learning Committee—the latter which she continued to

coordinate through the 2019-2020 school year. Lynn was drawn to Holy Child by the charism of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus. “The Holy Child Sisters taught that you learned from your mistakes in a gentle and kind way and I loved that,” said Lynn.

“There was always true love and care at this school, always.”

While Mrs. Gosnell’s last year ended through our distance-learning program HC@Home, the first grade class planned a car parade that drove past her house to celebrate their teacher. Lynn views her years at Holy Child with great fondness and is looking forward to staying in touch with the Holy Child alumni community.

While Lynn may have moved on to other things, the programs, relationships, and traditions she established here will be a testament to her commitment and love for the Holy Child community for years to come. D

Jacky Hunt Jacky Hunt has been a teacher at Holy Child School at Rosemont for over 35 years. She started at Holy Child as a gym teacher and coach, fulfilling her childhood dream of teaching PE and coaching. “At Holy Child, I always felt from day one that the kids felt comfortable and supported, but they are free to go in their own direction,” Jacky said. “I came from a public school where that wasn’t the case. It was more, ‘Sit in your chair, and don’t get up.’

It was very orchestrated. When I came to Holy Child, and I saw how things worked and the way classes moved along, I was captivated. I thought this is education done right.”

Throughout the years, Jacky has taught multiple grades and subjects, including Grade 3 reading and math, Grade 1 social studies, and Grade 4 math. Since 2008, she has been in Early Childhood teaching science and gym and incorporating mindfulness.

WHAT IS YOUR TEACHING PHILOSOPHY? The one thing that sticks in my mind always is to introduce big ideas to small children. That is my umbrella. Under that, I always think, “Make it interesting, make it fun, and let them run with it.” See where they go and not where you’re thinking they’ll go.

DO THE STUDENTS GENERALLY SURPRISE YOU WITH WHAT THEY COME UP WITH? Always. For each child, you get a little bit of a different thought, a different interest, and I think it also pulls the other kids into that. “I didn’t think of that” or “How about that?” When you pull all of the ideas together and let them look at what they all think, it really makes them broaden their minds and gives them a little extra.

WHAT HAVE THE STUDENTS TAUGHT YOU? The kids have taught me a lot. I would say resilience. If you try something and it doesn’t work, you rework it. You rethink it. You try it in a different way. You present it in a different way. You don’t get bogged down in one mindset. You have to think to yourself that everyone learns in a different way no matter who they are, so how can you facilitate that learning? How can you make it important for them?

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONE WHO IS TRYING TO BE MORE MINDFUL? I would say to them that to be really happy, you have to have gratitude. In your life, you have to think to yourself, “What are the things that I have that I am grateful for?” For me, it starts with God and then it comes down from God’s blessings to the people that you love, your family and your friends, and I think once you adopt that grateful feeling it makes you feel the goodness of all the things that you have—not

the things that you want necessarily, but the things that you have right here and now.

Once you hone in on that, it lets you figure out for yourself that, “Boy, am I blessed.”

WHAT DO YOU HOPE STUDENTS TAKE AWAY FROM YOUR CLASSES AS THEY MOVE ON? There are three words that always resonate with me. I put them up in my office. I think of them often and I follow it. These three words are play, passion, and purpose. I still think of the things I love to do to play. I still think, “What is my passion? What are the things that draw me and pull my heart and make me want to jump into it with a full ‘yippee’? What is your purpose? What are you doing and trying to achieve? Are you being successful with those things? What am I doing in each part of my life that makes me feel like it is important to do?”

WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE MEMORIES AT HOLY CHILD? I have so many. In the gym, I love doing our mindfulness. From the very start, we incorporated the yoga poses with it. My favorite part of that is when we put all of the yoga cards on the bleachers and had a kid pick a yoga card one at a time and then go into their part of the gym. Together they reenacted and coached each other. We put Kindergarten with second grade or PreKindergarten with third grade and it was magical. These kids were so enthralled to have the big kids as their coaches. I think that has been my recent favorite—the interaction with the gym class, the yoga, the mindfulness, and then we play games together.

JACKY ON EDUCATION: “I just think of school as the Exploratorium, a place for adventure and really discovering what it is you like to do and learning about the things you maybe thought you knew or didn’t like and it pulls you along.”

“I think it was Albert Einstein that said, ‘Imagination is more important than knowledge.’ I always think of the imagination part of learning.”

JACKY ON MINDFULNESS: “Mindfulness has been wonderful.

I really think giving little kids the skill [of mindfulness] is an investment in their future and also in their present. It gives them tools that they wouldn’t have had to really figure things out. We need it more than ever. It can really just develop a child’s feelings of goodness of themselves, their family, and the people around them. I think it makes for a wonderful way of looking at life.”

The McGowan Family:

WHY WE ARE A HOLY CHILD FAMILY If you have attended a swim meet, Auction, Spring Musical, or Parents’ Auxiliary event during the last several years, you would probably have run into parent volunteers Alicia and Peter McGowan P’18’21 and somehow benefited from their humble service to Holy Child School at Rosemont. Since joining the school in 2013, when daughters Annelise and Cara were in grades 4 and 1, the couple has happily shared their time and talents with a variety of committees, sports, and classes, but also in very quiet ways. Alicia has been a Library volunteer for over four years and spent hours creating costumes for our Spring Musical, while Peter has constructed the musical sets and stages for the past four years, with Alicia joining him in painting the sets.

Alicia and Peter would simply say they enjoy assisting our school community; the truth is, they can’t be thanked enough. “Throughout our years at the school, we’ve made great friendships with the other families at Holy Child. When our children are involved in a sport, a play, or an academic project, we naturally come out to help with whatever the school needs to make it a success. And honestly, it’s just a lot of fun being involved,” said Alicia. Added Peter, “We really are in a partnership with the school and the other families in educating and raising our daughters. We enjoy each other’s company, we enjoy being a part of our children’s school lives, and we know that this time with them is precious and short.”

While the McGowans were initially attracted to Holy Child after Annelise expressed how advanced the classes were during a visiting day, what struck the McGowans is deeper than curriculum. “It wasn’t just the amazing academics,” said Alicia. “The overall environment and the outstanding teachers attracted us to and has really kept us at Holy Child. The faculty and staff have truly taken a vested interest in helping our girls grow into the confident, articulate, and grounded young women they are. Looking back, it absolutely was the 16

best decision to send them to, and keep them at, Holy Child.” Peter agreed, “In the end, the whole decision to send our girls to Holy Child was validated by how well Annelise transitioned to high school. Her placement in the advanced high school classes showed that she was well prepared at Holy Child.”

The girls followed their parents’ example, and immersed themselves in the community, volunteering as altar servers for school Mass, taking part in sports, the Spring Musicals, community service, and Student Council, and serving as Student Ambassadors in our Admissions Office. Both girls voiced that their participation in the Spring Musical and the class trips are some of their most memorable and influential Holy Child experiences.

With this being the last year at Holy Child for Cara, and Annelise now in her junior year at The Baldwin School, Holy Child’s influence is more evident than ever for the McGowans. “The impact of a Holy Child education is seen not only in how well prepared they are academically, but also, or what really stands out, is how well they present themselves,” said Peter. “Holy Child graduates have a respect for others; they’re confident and they’re comfortable advocating for themselves and communicating with teachers, staff, and other students. When you’re at Holy Child, you just assume that this is how all kids are. But they’re not. The culture and teachers at Holy Child truly encourage and nurture this life skill. It’s pretty amazing to see.”

Cara will receive her diploma next spring, but thankfully, the McGowans plan to stay connected to the community they’ve so generously served the past eight years. “We both strongly feel that, while we and they will always come back and be a part of the alumni events, these Lower School and Middle School years really have been special and fleeting,” said the McGowans. “We’re truly grateful that our girls, and our family, were able to spend them at Holy Child.” The gratitude is mutual. Dr. Brian McDonough ’72 P’06’08’10 is an alum of many interests and accolades. You may recognize him as a Medical Editor on KYW or from his 20 years in broadcast on Fox News. During the global pandemic, he’s been sharing his wisdom through his popular “Coronavirus Today” audio podcast and YouTube channel, all while working on the front lines as a Chair of Family Medicine at St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware.

He also recently accepted a position as Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic Regional Medical Director of Informatics. What’s unique about Brian is that he has found a way to merge his interest in English, medicine, and technology into a career that he not only loves, but also that impacts his practice, this region, and, potentially, the nation.

Some of Dr. McDonough’s interests were first fostered at Holy Child School at Rosemont. “At the time, we had this advanced English course with a teacher named John McGarry. We were reading books by Albert Camus or the book Jonathan Livingston Seagull— books that were way beyond what you’d be reading in seventh grade.

That started my lifelong love of literature.” This love of literature continued all the way through college when Brian attended LaSalle University as a biology major and then switched to a double major of biology and English. In medical school, he began to see all the pieces come together. “When I got into medical school, I was working really hard on the science, but what I started to like was all the communication parts—that was the family practice in me.

I just looked at family practice and said, ‘Wow! This is everything I like in English, and literature, and communications, but in the medical world.’” By sophomore year, Dr. McDonough knew family medicine was his concentration, and he also began to see more that his genuine desire to know and truly listen to his patients’ stories

“I went into [the field] with academic curiosity and ended up finding the perfect career for me.

Family practice has never let me down because every patient you see is another story. It’s like reading a book. When you meet a patient, they have their masks off, they’re not trying to impress you. When people are sick, they are who they are. You meet real people; it’s a real gift that I get to meet people when they drop all the stuff around them,” said Dr. McDonough.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, spending a large chunk of time with sick patients carries the risk of exposure. However, this challenge has spurred Brian to use his love of informatics and technology to impact the healthcare system. “Sometimes you experience a tough situation like we are in the world, and it makes you more inventive,” said Dr. McDonough. Now on top of seeing patients, he is using his talents to alter processes that will influence his hospital network.

Dr. McDonough has spent the past decade working on converting the doctors’ patient information systems from engineering terms into “conversational doctor talk.” He’s also been integrating telehealth into hospital rooms so isolated patients can communicate with their doctors. “What we’ve done in the 92 hospitals of my healthcare network is start using iPads and other devices. Every patient gets one so that doctors can check-in through a HIPPA-protected way from outside the room, so the patient has someone to consistently communicate with even though they’re in isolation,” said Dr. McDonough. As for what’s on the horizon, Brian also serves as the Chairman of Pharmaceuticals and Therapeutics for all the 92 hospitals in the network. The hospital system is evaluating how to be innovative either through such measures as saving patients money by buying in bulk and viewing data from doctors across the board and using that information to inform treatments and improve patient care. Brian is heavily involved in this process. “It’s taking what we’re doing locally, and using it regionally and nationally,” said Dr. McDonough.

In addition to all of his work as a doctor, Brian and his wife Diane have three children who also attended Holy Child—Ashleen ’06, Brian ’08, and Cristin ’10. “The reason my wife and I sent our kids to Holy Child was because the school makes everyone feel like they have to contribute to the world in some way; it’s expected of you. They build confidence in you that you have a talent and you have to use that talent to help other people.” With his patients, through educating audiences with his podcasts and videos, and in utilizing technology to influence the medical field, Dr. McDonough is definitely using his talents and doing just that in our world today. Through fundraising events such as the Tennis & Paddle Outing, Holy Child Shops, and the Auction Tribute Book & Sponsorships, volunteers helped raise $150,000 for Holy Child School at Rosemont. While we were unable to host our Roaring Into the ’20s themed Auction in April due to the health pandemic, we want to extend a special thank you to the 2020 Auction Co-Chairs, Michelle Aitken, Nicole Linehan, Jessica Shorten, & Anne Schoemaker Vazquez ’95 and their committee members for all the work that they did to prepare for the event. Frank R. & Christopher C. Clarke Scholarship Fund Established in 1989 in memory of parent Frank R. Clarke, and later in 2011 in memory of his son Christopher C. Clarke ’82, the proceeds from this fund are used to help provide a Holy Child education for a child who has lost a parent or a child from a single parent family.

Joyce Ann Daily Sports Fund Established in 2001 in memory of Joyce A. Daily, VMD, Class of 1978, the proceeds from this fund benefit the Athletic Department.

The Outstanding Female Athlete Award is presented each year to a member of the graduating class in Ms. Daily’s name.

Charles and Elizabeth Luttrell Middle School Play Fund This fund was established and fully funded in 2016 by Stephanie Luttrell Stanko ’86 and her husband Steven Stanko to honor the memory of Stephanie’s parents. The proceeds from this fund provide financial support for our Middle School Spring Play, a Holy Child tradition near to Stephanie’s heart and family.

Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement (EITC) and Opportunity Scholarship (OSTC) Tax Credit Programs Holy Child School at Rosemont is grateful to the corporations and the Holy Child community members who facilitated these donations through Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit and Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit programs.

Since 2003, Holy Child has raised over $6 million and helped to educate over 120 students. Without this support, the school could not continue to help its students obtain an exceptional Holy Child School at Rosemont education.
