Golden Times As each communicant approached the altar, my life passed before me. Could it be possible that I was attending the 50th anniversary of my alma mater, Holy Child Academy? Although sizes and shapes may have changed over the years, faces and smiles were still easily recognizable. Every hug and handshake brought back countless memories. I remember riding in the backseat of my parents’ 1959 Chevy on the way to visit Holy Child Long Island for the first time. Dressed in my Sunday best, with my white gloves, I was told to speak when spoken to, and I was most obliging. Both my mother and father were quite taken with Reverend Mother Gabriel, the school’s superior. There was no question that they wanted me, and eventually my siblings, to attend what was then named Old Westbury School of the Holy Child. Little did I know that this car ride was the beginning of my lifelong association with the Sisters of the Holy Child and my life as a student, teacher, parent and administrator in Holy Child schools. That October day last fall was filled with far more emotion than I ever expected. Across the aisle, about twenty Sisters of the Holy Child were seated, many of them my teachers in elementary school, high school and eventually, Rosemont College (also sponsored by the Society). Each one had made a difference in my life: Mother Joseph Ann taught me that nuns also like to play baseball and sail; Mother Mary Jane taught me grammar so well that I remain a stickler for usage. Mother Renata gave me the gift of reading for pleasure, and Mother Agnes was so kind to me in third grade that she inspired me right then to be a teacher. There were a number of my classmates present: Bobby, who had been my date for the senior prom (or was it the Christmas formal?); Alice, who rode the bus with me for twelve years, and Christopher, who remains one of my dearest friends. Now very elderly, past parents who chaperoned ski trips and ice skating parties and green/white play days on the field added a special touch to the festivities. And then there was my dad, who, with many other founding families, helped the Sisters with fundraising in those early years. Holy Child was our extended family for sixteen years, and it felt so good to be back celebrating Mass in a most familiar place. I had returned home.

These memories make me think of our own golden event. At this time next year, we will celebrate our fiftieth anniversary. Our legacy here in Potomac is equally rich in the tenets of Cornelia Connelly, as we educate our girls and continue to “meet the wants of the age.” It’s heartening to think about all that has been accomplished before and since my arrival in 1994. In 1989, an innovative middle school program was instituted followed by the addition of Connelly Hall, which houses our exquisite library, performing arts cluster, computer labs, a fitness center and classrooms. A few years later, a chapel was added to our main building, providing a lovely meditative spot for our school community. Beyond bricks and mortar, however, our commitment to community service, our interactions with Holy Child Schools both in the United States and in Africa, the addition of programs like the Math Lab, Writing Center and the Connelly Program, all enhance our uniqueness. This fall, when we settle in to our beautiful new stadium and cheer on our Tigers, we’ll be making those memories that will stay well past our big anniversary celebration. I can only hope that our teachers, students and alumnae will have the same life-changing experiences I felt on that moving October day. Maureen K. Appel Headmistress

Brave New Academic World Recently I found myself in a conversation about being a high school student in today’s world. The general consensus was that it would be very difficult to be in high school nowadays: for one thing, it’s nearly impossible to get into an upper tier college unless you have top grades, amazing athletic skills and/or impeccable recommendations. But after much reflection, I decided my peers were way off target. This would be an amazing time to take a high school journey. I’d start as a freshman tomorrow! I realize that our teens today do navigate in a very fast-paced world. Instant gratification is second nature to them—it’s microwave or nothing. Your own phone line in your bedroom? No, now you must have the latest iPhone or Blackberry and a rockin’ Facebook page. Distractions aside, though, student technology has advanced in very positive ways. When I sneak a peek at students in class, it’s not uncommon to see them taking notes on their laptops (a far cry from my staying up all night to type my copious scribbles from the day on my giant desktop computer). Smartboards and computer-aided graphing and microscopes make science and other classes come to life in ways we could only imagine.

Plus, students here at HC are especially blessed to have access to numerous avenues of support. Our wonderful Academic Support Team is available all day to help guide the girls through any and all disciplines, taking extra time to simply get a student organized or even set up teacher appointments on the student’s behalf. Need help with a paper? No worries, they can just head to the Writing Center: Mrs. Wells is ready, red pen in hand. Not only is she aware of all the assignments given to students, she will also nudge them over that writer’s block or help push through the procrastination stage. Maybe it’s math that’s challenging. The Math Lab is open during J block, with teachers ready to attack that Calculus or Algebra problem. Plus, any member of the faculty is always happy to assist a student; their schedules are all posted so free time is easily accessed. Our goal is for each student to find success, and our small classes allow for just that to happen. So perhaps you can agree that this generation has it pretty good. And there are even more positive things to come. Soon we hope that we can offer that elective course online, and maybe the girls won’t have to carry that huge backpack; textbooks will be on disks, or on our iPads. It is a whole new exciting academic world. Sign me up! Teri Boragno Head of the Upper School, Academic Dean

The Exciting Middle Ages I was so proud last September at our Open

House as I walked around Connelly Hall and heard the students tell their stories: They were explaining to guests how the Middle School program has helped them become excited about learning, how they have grown as students and as people, and how much they love their classmates and their school. Seeing 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade students dressed in their bright orange 20th Anniversary T-shirts, dancing and singing “Good Morning, Holy Child,” was truly inspiring for me and made me happy to be a part of the celebration and part of this special place. It was the fall of 1989 that Holy Child opened its Middle School, and I joined the staff just three years later. (I’ve been here for most of my professional career, seventeen years!) At that point, I was fairly newly married and had no children, and was teaching eighth grade. I eventually moved to teaching 6th grade, and was fortunate enough to take over as head of the MS in 2005. It has truly been my home. Holy Child has seen me through the birth of my two children, the death of my father, and many everyday joys and difficulties. On top of all that, I always had a wonderful supply of responsible and fun babysitters! Back in the beginning, the Middle School program was designed based on the cutting research of the day, and we continue in that vein—to stay connected with the needs of young adolescents with interdisciplinary, hands-on learning with real-life applications. Whether dropping eggs from balconies or bouncing balls in the halls or running a workshop on the special accomplishments of women (see pictures of many in the pages to follow), we are constantly changing our approach and our methods—because these 21st-century girls, with ever-increas-

ing technological and world knowledge, demand it, and respond to it with enthusiasm. Last year, we began a program through which our girls met one-on-one with their parents in student-led parent conferences. After much preparation and practice with their teachers, the students spoke about goal-setting and personal achievements. One of the parents commended his daughter on her presentation, saying “This is great practice for your future! It’s just how I get evaluated at work.” As Cornelia Connelly said, all the way back in 1846, it is essential that educators, “meet the wants of the age.” At Holy Child we will continue to innovate and meet the needs of our students as we look forward to the Middle School’s next twenty years. While our methods change, our goal remains the same to help our girls become effective high school students, business and community leaders, and caring women. Young adolescents are a joy to work with; their passion for life is invigorating. Middle School girls don’t do anything halfway, and our students are no exception. In a single day we go from tears to laughter and back again at warp speed. What impresses me most is the girls’ care and concern for one another and for their teachers. The friendships formed in Middle School are like no other. I saw my daughter graduate from our Middle School in the spring; she has taught me so much during her time here, although I’m a little sad to see her go. Now that’s she’s off to the Upper School, I say I’m the only one in the family still in Middle School. That’s okay, though. Holy Child Middle School is a terrific place to be! Happy Anniversary to MS It was a happy, very orange day in the Middle School last September 25 as Holy Child celebrated its 20th anniversary. Back in 1989, Mary Hopkins, now head of the MS, was just starting out, engaged to be married, and her mom, Mary Kosch, was Holy Child’s Director of Admissions. The idea for an interdisciplinary, thematic school for 6th to 8th graders was launched. Today, Mary and her team continue to evolve, strengthen, and keep amazingly current the curriculum for these energetic pre-teens. A scavenger hunt (Grace Pereles, Maria Berkowitz and Lilly McCormick with their booklets, above) and open house kicked off the anniversary festivities, field hockey and volleyball games ensued, and all wrapped up with a prayer service and fun community barbecue on the lawn. (Just ask Anna Brickman, Greer Gingery, Sarah Kern, Katie Rose Marvin and Emilie Signora, top right.) Orange power lives!

They were taking part in Bike to the Beach, a ride to raise money for the defeat of autism. After the 100-mile trek, the riders, their families, and Autism Speaks National Capital Area chapter volunteers (including the Caulfield family at left, and Maureen Appel, center) celebrated at North Beach Restaurant. 4

The slip and slide on the front lawn was the first clue; the cries of kindergartners in the halls and the mini-volleyball net in the gym told the real tale: Summer campers had taken over campus. Bar-T brought hundreds of children to Holy Child over eight one-week general sessions, adding to a host of other camps that made 2010 the biggest summer ever. Coerver Soccer (with Holy Child varsity coach Danielle Maligari in teaching mode) and HC varsity coach (and Team USA manager) Sarah Aschenbach’s lacrosse camp christened our new turf field (after a great UnderArmour weekend tryout finished up); Varsity volleyball coach Greg Norris added two week-long evening volleyball sessions. Bethesda Soccer and Math Tree were among other outside parties that decided Holy Child is the place to be, bringing the public at large and some great revenue to the School. —K.H.E. www.holychild.org

Babies and Bells Then-MS teacher Karin Wells and husband Kevin welcomed Matthew Marden Wells on June 7, 2010 at 1:01 a.m. at Georgetown Hospital. The 7-pound, 5-ounce baby boy is now gurgling and smiling, and Karin is already missing him as she comes in to work in the Writing Center.

Our Shannon Pitcher, alum of the class of ’97, and alumnae relations associate and assistant director of student life, became Mrs. Eric Van Why when she said her vows at a storybook wedding in Deep Creek Lake this past August. The joyous couple headed off to a fun honeymoon in Maine, hitting Booth Bay Harbor and staying on Diamond island, off the coast of Portland.

Tim and Karla Hester welcomed Margherita into the world last November 30– on Tim’s birthday! They decided to bestow the middle name Teresa on the 9 lb. 11 ounce beauty, after Tim’s twin sister (who was named after Mother Teresa). They call her Rita, after Tim’s favorite saint.

John Quigley, math chair, doubled the fun: His wife, Tinna, had twin boys the Monday after graduation, June 7. After Jimmy and Jack spent more than two weeks in the Holy Cross NICU, and big brother (by ten seconds) Jimmy having to wear an apnea monitor for a couple months, both boys are gaining weight and doing well!

Drinking It All In Jaws dropped in the Holy Child gym as twenty-something Danny McCoy shared the heart-rending story of how his choice to drive drunk caused a date he barely knew to lose her life when he passed out and hit a pole. His story was one of the many cautionary tales Holy Child students heard during “Drive to Stay Alive,” a powerful presentation sponsored by Holy Child’s S.A.D.D. (Students Against Destructive Decisions) Club. ABC News anchor Leon Harris moderated this hour-long talk on the dangers of distracted driving—from chatting, texting, and more in addition to the dangers of drinking—and how so preventable all of the resulting accidents can be. Alongside Leon Harris, a local police officer offered his real-life experiences, and several videos underscored the points, including hidden cameras in teen drivers’ cars. (Harris later featured this school gathering, “one of the most respectful audiences we’ve had,” he noted, on the Channel 7 evening news.) This assembly is just one of the actions Holy Child takes regularly to keep our girls out of harm’s way. The spring saw numerous class-appropriate “Conversations That Count,” a program sponsored by the Community of Concern, a consortium of schools developing programs to address nonacademic concerns. After a local expert offered some facts about drinking, drugs and the teenage brain, and a Maryland prosecutor (and alum) told of the stark legal realities, students and parents scattered to engage in roundtable discussions on the pressures of parties and staying safe. Or, in short, how to keep the conversation going. —Kaela Jeffers

Saving Our Ride It was a case of civics in action when more than two dozen Holy Child supporters entered the large cafeteria in Rockville, site of the March 1 hearing to decide the fate of the #36 Ride-On bus, the only commuter bus to stop at our school. Pernilla Mpasi takes it from Silver Spring every day (“I don’t know what I would do if it was gone,” she lamented); the sophomore was selected to testify, along with HC headmistress Maureen Appel, to try to save our bus. After a long night of speeches and days of waiting, word came down. The County Council listened to our arguments, and voted Bus #36 would keep stopping at our circle. At least for now. Class of 2010 Graduation Ceremony, Friday, June 4, 2010

Graduation week started with a

touching Baccalaureate Mass on Wednesday, a special mother-daughter brunch, then the day arrived: dressing in the library, the giggles and the tying of the bows, the march out to the new field for their official picture. This year’s graduation featured special remarks by alumna Jane Rosinski Grenier (’76), Executive Director of Creative Services for Condé Nast Digital. The ceremony rolled out on a lovely sunny day, matched by the bright words of senior class president, Brynn Mayo:

“As I look at my class now, I see a group of young women, absolutely beautiful, who exude confidence and poise. They need no explanation. My words are simply icing on a very delicious cake.” “By making learning interactive and engaging, our teachers taught us not only the facts, but also about ourselves. They have shown us that with hard work and perseverance, we should aspire to any goal and we should follow any dream. Like our parents, they’ve cheered for us in the classroom, on the field, on the stage. Some will stay with me forever because they showed me genuine kindness.” Fall 2010 - Connelly Contact

True Colors: The Blue/Gold Competition Sparkling gold lamé tights, extravagant blue feather boas, girls running

Two years ago, Holy Child decided to revive Blue/Gold, a tradition that ran strong in the seventies and eighties (blue is the new brown!), but fell out of favor. Though not nearly as

entertaining as Hogwarts’ Sorting Hat, each member, students and faculty alike, is presented their color when they enter the school. They’ll own it for their whole time at Holy Child. Blue has been the reigning champion the last two years (as you can see engraved on the esteemed glass trophy cup displayed prominently across from Billingsley Hall). But winning the competition was not just a walk in the park; they did it by racking up points from attendance at special events—senior sports games, musicals, bingo, making sandwiches for Martha’s Table, particular tag days and blood drives. Oh, yes, all in addition to those wild games in front of family and friends on the fine fall Game Day: flag football, MS soccer, even the alumnae get involved. “Purple Reign” senior entrance that is the kick-off to “Color Wars,” the highly anticipated culmination of Spirit Week the most coveted week of the HC school year. This February, as they have for years, classmates unite in an effort to rise above the other classes to be named Spirit Week champions. It’s four days filled with costumed, silly, and competitive events, from volleyball against the faculty to a pie-eating contest, the giggleinducing “tee-hee” game, and dozens more activities occupying these school days. On Disney Day, it wasn’t unusual to come across the Toy Story crew, Peter Pan, more than one dreaded villain named Ursula, even the ballooned house from UP. A Grand Old Day If it’s Thanksgiving, it must be time for Grandmom and Granddad to visit.

No, not for dinner, but for the annual tradition: come to Holy Child, and see what granddaughter is up to. This year’s morning coffee was standing room only, as more than ever made the trip to school. Many were impressed with the girls’ classes (Jessie Ely’s grandparents, Edna and Gene, got a dose of biology), our singing ensemble, and enjoyed the holiday liturgy. It’s always a heartwarming sight to watch the girls take care of their often elderly and not so old grands—Lauren Keeley was one of the smiling hostesses. It was a fitting lead-in to the family-filled holiday season.

Dads and Daughters Break Bread The Annual Father-Daughter Breakfast Holds Fond Memories As our daughter, Erin, embarks on the next chapter of her life and heads off to col-

lege, I find myself reminiscing about all of the wonderful experiences and memories of her time at Holy Child. One of the many wonderful traditions is the annual Father-Daughter mass and breakfast. It doesn’t seem that long ago that we attended our first event, when Erin was in seventh grade. Through the years, it became one of our favorites. Picture this: It’s a crisp and sunny fall day, and I get to spend some uninterrupted, quality time with my daughter, her friends, and their dads. We shared some laughs and enjoyed the food, but most importantly, each other’s company. All in a caring, nurturing and spiritual environment that, as a parent, I quickly learned is the greatest strength of the School. The leaves were changing, just as our daughters did from year to year. It was so gratifying and heartwarming to see them go from adolescent girls to beautiful young women in just a few short years. Every year Headmistress Maureen Appel would welcome everyone and ask who was attending for the first time and who for the last. I remember thinking that Erin was a long way off from graduation in those early years, but the time went by quickly. Enjoy the journey with your daughter and put reflecting during this wonderful event on your list. –Joe Kale, dad of Erin (’10)

Brunching With Mom The finals are done, graduation dresses bought, parties planned…let the graduation festivities begin.

The annual Mother-Daughter Luncheon, held on the day before Baccalaureate, is a chance to step back from the flurry and the stress, sit down with classmates in the library for one last time, and swap tales of the Class of 2010. Yearbooks were also swapped for signatures. Moms, like Pee Wee Kelly with daughter Kelly Whelan, and Dena Jacobs with Miranda, got some quality time with their college-bound gals.

Dancing to an African Beat Jenna Sutton, US Science teacher, is no stranger to the African continent, having grown

up in Zimbabwe. But this summer, she discovered new lands as she visited Holy Child schools and centers in Ghana and Nigeria. Four teachers from Holy Child schools in the U.S. joined her on this exploratory tour to see if students could make such a journey. They found different worlds from ours, with spare dormitories and short hair required, but still the infectious joy of teenage girls and boys. They saw the animals, including goats our girls had a woman, donated, at the Agricultural Centre, plus a health complex, a women’s vocational center, and the natural wonders that abound. Jenna even got out of her comfort nation.” zone and joined in the dancing. As she says, “You can’t know if you don’t go.”

“A Love Full of Action” in Lourdes Cornelia Connelly’s prayer was mine, too, this past spring when I embarked on my sixth pilgrimage to Lourdes, France, the sacred site where the Blessed Mother appeared to a humble, faith-filled young girl, St. Bernadette. I was participating as a member of the Order of Malta in our Annual Lourdes Pilgrimage with the sick (“malades” in French). It is a week dedicated to faith and friendship; we share a beautiful week filled with spiritual activities, such as daily Mass, visiting the baths and serving our malades and their companions. I was eager to share my experiences with my students, who were keenly interested, and very curious: “Have you seen any miracles?” they asked. I thoughtfully explained that I had witnessed many, but that not all were what we might expect. While 67 miraculous physical cures attributed to Lourdes are formally recognized by the Catholic Church, miracles of the heart and various healings attributed to Lourdes, too numerous to count, continue to occur since Our Lady’s apparitions in 1858. The girls and I visited the official Lourdes website (www.lourdes-france.org) before my trip; its live Webcam of the Blessed Grotto showed where we 16

would place the letters of petition they had written to the Virgin Mary. More than 200 pilgrims joined our group to France, a small bit of the tens of thousands who visited Lourdes that week. It was very cold and an icy rain was falling as we left the grotto, but no matter the weather, our hearts were warmed by the tremendous grace, love, and peace of Christ we were sharing with one another! —Chrissy Page, religion department (second from right, above) www.holychild.org

Jane Bandler has seen her share of the world, having lived overseas with her Foreign Service husband for 20 of their 38 years together. But this past summer, they embarked on a true “round the world in less than 80 days” journey, actually seven countries in seven weeks. The itinerary took them from San Francisco to Hawaii (Honolulu, Kauai) to Japan (Tokyo) to Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Terengganu, Redang) to China (Beijing, Shanghai) to India (Delhi, Agra, Jaipur) to Russia (Moscow, St. Petersburg) to Morocco (Casablanca, Fes, Marrakesh) to Portugal (Lisbon) to HOME! “We had the most fun in Malaysia,” she says, “because our son was living there at the time, teaching English on a Fulbright grant in a rural high school. All were amazing, but we loved India and Morocco the most!” The elephant they met at a favorite stop in Jaipur, India. –K.H.E.

Beating Poverty with South African Song To the audience, it was a heart-pounding, hand-clapping, musical performance that brought the

whole school population to its feet. To the students, it was so much more: a look into the lives of a dozen South African youth striving for a better future. In fact, the singers from the Bokamoso Center (Bokamoso means future), who traveled to the Washington for three weeks, taught the girls much about living in poverty. They come from Winterveldt near Pretoria, often in tin houses with no running water or electricity, battery-run B&W TVs at best, and are working their way up out of this scenario. The girls saw determination and perseverance in the words and the songs, and felt the joy of students who are not giving up on themselves. The MS sponsored a tag day for scholarships, as well as a drive to provide toiletries and other necessities for the group. Sister Connie wheeling the overflowing wheelbarrow to present the gifts was a special moment in the day.

This summer’s FIFA World Cup thrilled millions in all corners of the globe, but one HC middle schooler related more closely with the South African extravaganza. Caroline Stricker’s Falls Church U12 soccer team, Fusion, learned to do the “diski” dance, specially created for the quadrennial event; their video of it won first place in a contest sponsored by South African Tourism. Their prize: a trip to South Africa. Read all about the great trip around the world at www.myfoxdc.com; search for diski dance, and see the video of the dance as well! —K.H.E.

Helping others, improving ourselves

Summer in the City Summer camps are a dime a dozen, but for two Holy Child juniors, a week in New York City was much more than a walk in the park. Katrina Dzyak (’12) and Julianne Pearson (’12) (second and third from left) joined two students and an adult from each of the five Holy Child network high schools in a week-long session at the Cornelia Connelly Center for Education on the Lower East Side. This middle school serves girls from low-income families, and the ten counselors all worked with incoming

5th graders for a week in August, planning and implementing lessons and activities. Katrina speaks of the impact of her time there: “Living in the conditions these girls have lived in since birth was an inspiration…to understand their fear of whether they would ever have an opportunity to better their lives.” Julianne felt a similar gratitude: “This experience changed my life in such a great way, and even more, I

felt I was able to change the lives of others who were there.” Campus minister Jean Plummer accompanied the girls on this first camp experience, and hopes to expand the program in the future. It seemed to work its magic; as Katrina says, “I feel I have finally understood Cornelia Connelly’s emotions as she created her network bettering live to better the world.” We couldn’t have said it any better. —K.H.E.

We Got Their Goats The Middle School Service Buddies club,

along with advising teachers Ms. Cummings and Sra. Masson, is thankful to all of the families who have brought in their “Boxtops for Education.” Each $100 buys a goat in their “Adopt” an animal program. With thousands of boxtops from cookie and cereal and brownie mix boxes and more, we were able to buy five goats for our sister organization in Nigeria, the Holy Child Integrated Agricultural Center.

Walking in Their Shoes Strolling around the campus is an enjoyable thing, especially on a fine fall day with your friends

(from left: Mary Kate Virostek, Mary Goelzer, Jasmine Walton, Tricia Lynch, Taylor Baldwin). But our girls understand the importance of this annual walkathon, part of the Fannie Mae Annual Walk, which raises money for New Endeavors for Women and Bethesda Cares. They know that the money goes directly to these local groups, helping families negotiate homelessness and hunger. They may not walk in the literal shoes of the poor, but now they know a bit more about helping them. 18

Prayer for a New World Speaking to God is ingrained in all Holy Child days, but the Foundations class brings a fresh approach to spirituality. In this senior seminar on “skills for ministry” (the official title), the girls regularly plan the weekly prayer blocks and other liturgies, as well as retreats and service activities. Instead of just reading traditional tracts, however, the student body is more likely to see a moving slide show with contemporary music and personal quotes. With Ms. Jean Plummer’s guidance, the girls make videos about acceptance, assemble presentations on racism and hunger, create powerful Powerpoints on natural disasters and personal tragedies—all helped by our compassion. This year’s class created a moving living Stations of the Cross, marked by modern tunes and reverent portrayals; it was a tear-inducing, touching point in the Lenten season, one of our modern takes to ancient rituals. —K.H.E.

Hunger Up Close A Letter Perfect Day

It’s one of the more lively Holy Child traditions, as kids and moms and

dads flood the gym for the chance to holler out a ringing “BINGO!!!!” Held each year as a fundraiser for the Washington Middle School for Girls (who joined in, see above), this winter weekend outing is a hoot for the whole family: grandmoms are wielding their colored markers, classes are vying for the most wins, there are dozens of prizes and gift cards, popcorn and nachos. Mark your calendars: this year’s fun rolls out on February 26.

The lucky ones got a fancy hot meal, complete with table service. Most

(55 percent) got a bowl of rice, sitting on the floor, another third got actual beans with their rice. The Middle School felt the virtual pangs of hunger and poverty as they experienced the 2nd annual Oxfam Hunger Banquet last November, with the girls divided into groups just as hunger occurs in the world. This special event raises money for Oxfam America, part of an international relief organization that “creates lasting solutions to poverty, hunger and injustice” by dealing with the root causes of the problem. It gave a whole new perspective to Thanksgiving dinner. —K.H.E. Fall 2010 - Connelly Contact

finearts creativity in action

T

he arts are alive and well on the Holy Child campus, with more students than ever participating in showing off their theater, music, and visual arts talents. And yes, they’ll sign autographs, so enjoy these peeks of the rising stars, including some behind the scenes moments.

Lightning Strikes With Grease Hair gel and poodle skirts? Check. Thunderbirds and Pink Ladies? Check. A one-of-a-

kind musical put on by two talented Holy Child casts? Double check. The Spring 2010 Holy Child musical production of Grease took audiences back to a cast of characters eternally preserved in 1950s high school angst. As they danced to the tune of oldies but goodies, they switched romantic partners as frequently as dance partners. For this production of the original “high school musical,” director Patricia Budwig and student choreographer Michelle Famulare (assisted by Miranda Jacobs) created fantastic dance numbers that moved on and off the stage, even incorporating the audience. Our amazing stage managers, Mary Schwartz, Patty Yoritomo and Miranda Jacobs, led the two extensive casts during four months of preparation for the spirited show. Holy Child’s instrumental ensemble, supplemented by some local musicians, performed for all four performances under the direction of Elsbeth Fager, our Upper and Middle School musical director. By using two casts (titled “Rama Lama” and “Ding-Dong”), Ms. Budwig exploited the full range of Holy Child talent, with strategic assists from several male actors from nearby schools. Heroine Sandy was played in alternate performances by ZZ Krebs (’11) and Madlyn McAuliffe (’10). The cool and swift Danny Zuko was one of a small number of constants (mostly male, though I did have a fun turn as the almost as cool Vince Fontaine): Zack Gray of Langley High School captured Danny’s greased perfection in all performances. Rizzo’s gritty bad-girl charm was explored by both Katie Kress (’12) and Margaret Tomlin (’10). With double the talent of Pink Ladies and Thunderbirds, and four separate performances over a March weekend, Grease had all audiences humming, foot-tapping, and hand-clapping as everyone agreed that “Grease is the word.” –Catherine Fielding (’10) 20

The Play’s The Thing In March 2010, hot off their success in the

spring musical Grease, a busload of HC students headed to DC to tackle another tale of high school rivalry. The members of the Drama Club spent the day performing in the annual Folger Shakespeare Secondary School Festival. This annual showcase, held at the Folger Shakespeare Library, attracts acting talent from more than a hundred schools in Virginia, DC, and Maryland, performing over a span of two weeks. This year, Holy Child took home a group award for the risks they took in their creative montage entitled “A Tale of Two Schools” (written by Emily Heard, Sarah Freburger, and Mimi

Leiter). The setting is a high school dance sponsored by Capulet Academy and Montague Prep, and the attendees, in typical high school fashion, suffer from love triangles and brood over attending a dance when they would rather stay home. Hamlet, Romeo, Juliet, and Ophelia are among the mood-disordered students, while Polonius appears as a chaperone. Two HC cast members took home individual awards for their efforts: Senior Kelly Whelan won for “Killing Me Softly,” playing the mandolin while being strangled by fellow actor Catherine Fielding. Fielding won an award for “commitment to character”; she played a strong emo-like

Technically Speaking Surrounded by darkness, costumes, and clutter, I breathe in the particular scent of the theater: a combination of paint, sweat, and dust. This is the place where skills are learned, friends are made, and talents are found. As a freshman, the theater was an inviting, intriguing place where I made friends ranging from freshmen to seniors and learned how to use expensive equipment. Nothing was scarier than turning off the sound switch and dreading that telltale pop that implied you just ruined the entire system. On those never-ending tech days on Sundays during the winter, I learned more skills than I could ever imagine. I learned how to paint, to spray paint, use a staple gun, upholster, use duct tape to fix almost anything, and to wield a hot glue gun to fix anything duct tape couldn’t fix—all in service of building the stunning permanent set for The Utter Glory of Morrissy Hall. On a more technical side, I also learned how to use the soundboard and light board, enjoying the opportunity to move beyond tape and glue to more professional equipment. My sophomore year I became the Props Mistress, taking on more work than I could handle. Thankfully my fellow classmate Mary Schwartz (’11) came to my rescue and together we got through the prop heavy Alice/ Through the Looking Glass. Trips to thrift shops, lots of creativity, and helpful friends and parents made all of our wonderful, colorful props possible. Our then director, Ms. Carlson, used her connections to get hold

of two professionally made props, great flamingos/croquet mallets. So we techies took this lead and created two more out of papier mâche and balloons and paint and, of course, feathers. Last year, Meg Dean (’12) inherited the not-so-coveted job of running the sound board, infamously known for being temperamental, faulty, and unreliable. Meg and I learned more than we could ever imagine about the sound system from our director’s husband, himself a sound engineer. Mary and I became stage managers, entering a whole new world of managing. Together we made it through—Mary was backstage, making sure the props, and the actors, were in the right place at the right time; I was up in the booth, calling cues and enjoying the view. Doing tech at Holy Child has not only taught me how to paint and how to operate a spotlight, but also how to quiet a room of chatty students and how to solve problems under pressure. Participating in the tech side of the theater has taught me how to go with the flow and how to interact with people in high stress situations as well how to work as a team to produce the best production possible. –Patty Yoritomo (’11) Fall 2010 - Connelly Contact

W

ith strains of everything from Broadway to hip-hop, Disney and jazz classics, and the homegrown Cornelia Connelly theme song, the musical year at Holy Child was a vibrant one. And when the boys came to campus, well, the tones were even stronger!

Dance All the stretching and bar work and floor exercises paid off when the Dance Team showed

their grace and style at Fine Arts Week, the last week of April. (This year it’ll be over a month.) A stunning Varsity Dance team number, “Her Diamonds, “ choreographed by senior Michelle Famulare (top, far right), was performed by (from left) Fiona Tomlin, Katie Pritchard, Sophia Motta, Katie Thomas, and Caroline Chiaramonte; another floor number featured a large cast, including (from left) Ashley Terrell, Courtney Bratun, Katie Pritchard, and Maggie Dees. The Middle School provided a spark with “Fireflies,” with a dance troupe that included (far right, from left) Avery Luck, Maddy Hopkins, Celine Corbie, Lauren Smith, and (top right) Riley Fanning. “Jitterbug” got the crowd moving, with PE classmates strutting their stuff: (from left) Ren McFaden, Stefani Murray, Isabelle Tyshing and Lauren Anastasi.

The Boys Are Back in Town There was a bit of baritone in the house as “The Eye Street Boys” of Gonzaga High School joined our own Upper School Chorus and Vocal Jazz Ensemble in an evening of tuneful medleys at April’s Fine Arts Week concert. (The girls also performed at Gonzaga in their spring presentation.) The fellows brought some attitude and spirited choreography to their Temptations medley, and joined with the Camerata with a rousing “Africa” send-off. The Instrumental ensemble also contributed joyful Disney and Taylor Swift sets. –K.H.E.

History Runs Away to the Circus

Colorful and vibrant doesn’t begin to describe the recent

musical phenomenon that is the Connelly Music Circus. This year’s lively musical presentation, which features the entire Middle School in its cast, was again a history lesson with verve. Written and directed entirely by Ann Whiteley, HC’s musical director wonder, “Villains Rule” had 6th graders as everyone from Ursula to the Big Bad Wolf; “Good Morning, Rome” featured Caesar and a whole 7th grade supporting cast for a morning TV show; and “New York, New York” brought the Big Apple to life in the 8th grade embodiment of Broadway, models, even the Statue of Liberty and Chrysler Building. As its opening number announced, “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” and the cast and the audience surely did. —K.H.E.

Big College Men on Campus We know them as the Middlebury boys, but their official name is the

“Dissipated 8,” “Middlebury College’s premiere all-male a cappella group.” What the girls especially like is watching eight adorable college guys with more than a little personality, in their group numbers, solos, and afterperformance chats. It’s been a yearly visit, one of the highlights of the busy fall; the groups CDs are real hits. Sing on!

Torch Songs and More The year-end musical wrap-up, “Collaboration,” was a compelling display

of the vocal and instrumental talent of our solo and group performers. Sarah Pim, backed up by Maria Leyva, ZZ Krebs, and Hannah Gessler, belted out “My Strongest Suit” (from Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida); all were equally worth of that Broadway tryout. Fall 2010 - Connelly Contact

rt lovers, take note: There is talent lurking in the halls of Holy Child. Whether the intense and heartfelt self-portraits and lively wordplay of pen and ink or sculptures evoking Dale Chihuly, the works displayed during Fine Arts week transformed the halls into a high-class gallery, and continue to grace the display spaces throughout the library and beyond.

Whether oils, acrylics, pen and ink, or charcoal, the gallery shone as Fine Arts Week rolled out. Garlic never looked so good as in junior ZZ Krebs’ abstract rendition; geometric prowess was shown by senior Katherine Heinssen; our favorite annual project, wordplay in art, featured “Oxford” by senior Erin Kale. Portraits are a special part of the curriculum; Julia Langer did her friend in color, and Alicia Vidal won a competition (see story at right) with her self-portrait.

Making the Gallery Grade Our art department made a big splash this past spring at the 29th Annual Congressional Art Competition held at Strathmore Hall mansion in April. For this juried show, sponsored by Maryland’s 8th District Congressman Chris Van Hollen, Holy Child had four works selected to hang, among 84 pared down from more than 200 entries. Julia Langer’s pastel still life (bottom left), Shannen Quinn’s and Alicia Vidal’s self-portraits in pencil (graphite), and ZZ Krebs’ chalk pastel vegetables (bottom right) stood tall among the wide-ranging selections in everything from oils to digital photography. The excitement of the evening came first when junior ZZ Krebs received an honorable mention (there were five runners-up and six honorable mentions for the show). The last prize announced, the “Best of Show,” went to Alicia Vidal, Class of 2010. Alicia’s portrait will hang in the Capitol for a year along with the other selections from congressional districts across the country.

Chilhuly Two-dimensional art is the tradition, but more and more, sculpture is making its way into the work of the students. For years, Middle School has created bold oversize papier mâché items (from scissors to doughnuts). Now Ms. McClave is bringing the 3-D work into the 9th grade. This year, the girls “sculpted” their own echoes of the great glass creator Dale Chihuly, by melting plastic and using markers to make it beautiful.

Weaving A Natural Design In search of future designers? Look no further than our own 6th-grade crew, who last spring

vaulted into the pantheon of fabric mavens when they designed their own Lilly Pulitzer-type prints. MS Art teacher Cyndi McClave, ever in search of motivating projects, took the passion of her preppie tweens and combined it with their love for Lilly and the natural world (with a nod to Martha Stewart, who also showed how this could be done). The results were nature and fashioninspired artworks that not only found the artistic pitch of repeating elements, but caught the eye of the Lilly Pulitzer folks themselves. Much to the girls’ delight, the artwork was featured on the company’s national website! Fall 2010 - Connelly Contact

cially at this time of year. But this fall, our 7th graders will demonstrate once again that driving these conferences can be a learning moment for students as well. In October 2009, our Middle School turned the tables on these routine checkpoints, giving the 6th-grade girls the opportunity to explain to their parents where they stood in their classwork, how they got there, and how they could take steps to grow even more academically. It’s just one destination point on the multi-year project called The Learning Roadmap. This innovative idea engages the girls to take charge of their work by understanding their particular learning styles, their strengths, weaknesses, and particular challenges, both in class and socially. The project is rolling out throughout the school in many facets, from detailing the many extracurricular and service activities in preparation for college applications to workshops for girls to help dovetail their interests with academic excellence and personal growth. “Our job,” notes 7th grade teacher Ms. Kahan, “is to arm our girls with critical thinking, flexibility, and the ability to access information, not simply fill them up with facts. These conferences helped in their poise as well as the students’ understanding of their school work in entirely new ways.” –K.H.E. www.holychild.org

Clean Up Brigade With squeals of “ewwww” countered by the teachers’ “That’s why you’re wearing gloves!,” the Middle School girls of Holy Child fulfilled their Earth Day mission: to clean up our adopted portion of Bradley Boulevard. Armed with both trash bags and blue recycling bags, the girls picked up cans and bottles, paper and cups, and entirely too many beer bottles and cigarettes for any young girl to handle. especially in the world of AP History. And the living part of this class was in clear evidence as the class of 20092010 held an end-of-year “coffeehouse” to present the stories and the real-life counterparts of their work during the year-long oral history project. This year’s topic, researched and chosen by teacher Sharon Kenny, was especially personal, as the girls met and interviewed women religious in the area, most notably our own Sr. Connie (she’s been a nun for more than fifty years.) In detailing their extensive interviewing, using state-ofthe-art digital equipment, each girl told a piece of their process for capturing original voices that may otherwise Junior Carol Lucarelli with her interview subject, Sr. Janet be lost. Many of the interviewees were in attendance, Mock, CSJ. as well as alum Anna Palladino, who showed how the class actually led her into journalism. The students—juniors Sarah Allen, Luci Giorgio, Carol Lucarelli, Mel Mikus, Patty Yoritomo, and seniors Margaret Tomlin and Kathleen Willmore—discovered how these strong women had a huge leadership role at a time when women weren’t running much of anything, how sisters actually went up against major organizations to gain rights, how their work as teachers, nurses, administrators, college presidents and more inspired a whole generation. Sr. Theresa Kane has been a strong leader in her congregation (the Mercies), as have others, especially in the areas of education and social justice. As Luci Giorgio noted when Sr. Connie spoke to the class, “I was surprised to find out that they could not even speak unless spoken to.” They’ve come a long way, baby. Fall 2010 - Connelly Contact

An Ocean Adventure Graduation was done, and summer vacation had begun for the rest of the student body. But ten of us juniors from Ms. Sutton’s Oceanography class woke up the next day at the break of dawn to continue their studies of the ocean and its creatures. The thought of spending five days snorkeling in the clear, cool waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean thrilled us all. First came a tour of the Marine Lab in Key Largo. The day was hot and humid and we could not wait to jump in the water, even if it was just for our swimming test (which, thankfully, everyone passed). Over the next two hours, we discovered, with our instructor, the first underwater hotel and marine lab in the lagoon, and saw our first fish, several large green and blue parrot fish. We thought the lagoon was the coolest thing we had ever seen, but that was only the beginning. The exploring continued in our snorkeling trips in the deeper waters surrounding Key Largo, where we saw the diversity of ecosystems and organisms living there, especially the sea grasses teeming with sea stars, horseshoe crabs, and small fish. We explored the mangroves, those wondrous trees that create their own islands by growing roots to keep them afloat, allowing them to drink salt water but still function as safe shelter for fish. After long days of three snorkeling sessions, we dragged ourselves to classes; surprisingly, every instructor kept us awake, interested and learning until well after 9 p.m., with their passion for the ocean, their knowledge, and their jokes. We conducted numer-

ous labs, from testing water from around the world to shaking a rock to discover small creatures (like the “decorated crab” or sea stars as small as a quarter), and dissected sponges to look at their simple yet incredible tissues. But the ocean, with its coral reef, held even more incredible sights. We swam down to take pictures with Christ of the Abyss (a statue of Christ on the sea floor), paddled away from mean-looking yet harmless great barracudas, and glided through a school of glistening Sergeant Major fish. We were lucky enough to experience the presence of dolphins as well as several more rarely spotted animals: such as a nurse shark (not killers, they tell us), a huge loggerhead turtle, and a large spotted eagle ray. Our last day found us swimming in the open ocean at more than 300 feet in depth. The sensation of infinity when I looked down in the deep blue water was amazing. Peace and freedom filled our veins as we saw barracudas and jellyfish (also harmless) float by. On our way back to the dock, flying fish seemed to race our boat as we giggled and sang with the ocean breeze all around us. Daytime in the water watching amazing fish, nighttime on the boat looking up at the sparkling night sky, the evening after our class laughing and talking about the day with Ms. Sutton, Ms. Rathbone, and our fellow travelers this unforgettable Key Largo experience was surely worth getting up at 6:00 a.m. —Luciana Giorgio (’11)

studentachievements National Honor Society Scholars When seven Holy Child juniors and seniors lit their candles in the chapel on a fine spring day, they joined more than fifty of their classmates who previously entered the ranks of the National Honor Society for the school year 2009/2010. This number represents more than 50 percent of the junior and senior classes, and recognizes the four pillars of character, scholarship, leadership and service. In both cases, two ceremonies were held, one with classmates at a midday assembly in the gym, and a more intimate evening induction with parents and friends. There, previous inductees offered personal insights into the lives of their friends and how they warrant inclusion in this elite society. The girls also sign the official registry, a permanent record of the membership rankings.

The 2009-2010 slate includes the following:

Walking on Art

One of Mayfield Market’s successful vendors, selling her cool hand-painted casual shoes, was

one of our current seniors, Shannen Quinn. Shannen, who has received artistic kudos elsewhere (see Strathmore story on page 25) is now putting her efforts into selling her wares. CC: What is the coolest part about your business, Shoes by Shannen? It’s definitely the creativity that I am able to use. People trust me enough to say “Just go wild on this pair,” and I can make designs that I think suit my customer.

and asked to replicate it, but nothing can compare to my friend’s wild idea. She wanted a pair with Jack Bauer’s [from TV’s 24] face on the front. I did my very best to please her, and I must say that pair was definitely the most interesting and fun to do.

CC: What is the most important thing you’ve learned from running this business? Time management has really become my most difficult task ever since I started making shoes. I sometimes forget how time consuming one pair of shoes may be, and when a school assignment has to be done as well...It gets pretty sticky. I do think I’ve learned a new skill of organization that others may not experience in high school.

CC: When did you start your business, and what inspired it? I had seen custom shoes done before, and I just wanted my own pair! I believe it was July of ‘09 when I designed them. This whole thing was just a summer hobby that sort of escalated into Shoes by Shannen.

CC: What is the most unique design request you have received? I sometimes can be handed a unique pattern

CC: Is this something you plan on continuing? Expanding Shoes by Shannen is a goal of mine, so I definitely can see myself designing shoes throughout and after college. A B.S. in business will be very useful!

Maryland Stars Four of our talented artists shone in Maryland

Dragon Boat Champ You may think you know Sarah Allen (’11), the AP scholar/NHS member, heavenly piano accompanist, fine Holy Child citizen. Did you know she is a champion Dragon Boat racer? This past May, Sarah (third from right) competed in the 2010 Washington, D.C. Dragon Boat Festival as a member of the OCC Dragons, rowing on the Potomac River in those intricately designed and beautiful red dragon boats. More than 56 teams competed, and her team won the Government Division Challenge Cup (beating teams from the Federal Reserve, the Patent Office and the Taiwan Consular Affairs). The OCC Dragons also won Gold Medal in the “D” Division for the 500 meter and Bronze Medal in the “E” Division for the 250 meter. The Gold Medal was particularly sweet since the team was short-handed and had to paddle with only 16 people instead of the other boats’ full 20 people. Way to go, Sarah!

this spring as they nabbed Honorable Mentions in the Maryland Distinguished Scholar Talent in the Arts competition: Maria Leyva (voice); Sarah Allen (piano), Sophia Motta (dance); ZZ Krebs, Shannen Quinn (art). In the Academic Achievement category, Sarah Allen was named a Semifinalist, and Sonia Ahmed, Jessica Ely, Luciana Giorgio, Maria Leyva, and Patricia Yoritomo were designated Honorable Mention. The Maryland Distinguished Scholar Program is administered by the Maryland Higher Education Commission and annually recognizes the outstanding academic and artistic accomplishments of high school seniors who are Maryland residents.

Summer Vacation: Sisters Act Up For the Future Sophomore twins Kylah and

Kaylah Simmons have experienced many wonderful journeys, not the least of which was their move to Holy Child from our sister school, the Washington Middle School for Girls. But this summer was a special one for both. Kylah ventured to Colorado, specifically the University of Denver Medical School, for a six-week program for minorities interested in the medical field. (She stayed with a host family, and even camped in the Rockies.) In addition to courses on high school success, applying to college and getting certified in CPR and First Aid, she got a major view of the medical and dental school. “I examined dead bodies—cadavers… and got the opportunity to work with mechanical robot practice patients. I delivered a robot baby and did CPR on a robot man in distress.” She went on to shadow dentists and their assistants. She followed this up a scholarship to a biomedical program at Walter Reed, doing exciting experiments such as abstracting fruit DNA. 30

Connelly Contact - Fall 2010

One other special journey for Kylah was attending a conference of the National Stuttering Association in Cleveland, Ohio: “I met many teen stutterers just like me.” Sister Kaylah (at left) had a very different, but equally fascinating summer “vacation.” “I had the opportunity to live my dream of being an actress!” Her experience began at Brown University as part of a program called An Introduction to Directing for the Theater: A Laboratory for Young Directors and Actors. Over two weeks of living the day and life of a college student, she met others from around the globe. Next she headed to the USC campus in Los Angeles for a month in a three-credit course, USC Summer Theatre Conservatory: Musical Theatre. “I was able to explore a variety of movements, songs, and acting techniques, venturing around the city…including watching plays and musicals for my acting course (like South Pacific).” Then up to the California mountains to the Idyllwild Arts Academy, a performing arts boarding school. “During the course of my theater summer programs, I was able to get a better perspective of what theater really is. I was able to learn and improve on my acting, voice and dancing skills. Not only was I able to enjoy being an actress, but I also had a chance to live out loud as an artist!” —K.H.E.

facultynews Shining Science Star She’s not the most talkative member of the faculty, though her surprising turn

as “warden” during Spirit Week thrilled the seniors. What Kelly Tomon, physics teacher extraordinaire, has been is a favorite among the student body, and, evidently, with the administration as well—she took over the reins as chair of the science department this fall. And now, the public will see her in that light as well. Pick up the September/October issue of Bethesda magazine, and read of Ms. Tomon’s selection as one of the “Most Beloved Teachers” in the special fall education issue. Learn of the joy she finds in scientific endeavor, and how she imparts that to the girls: from blowing bubbles to shooting darts, dashing scooters down the driveway or clanging cymbals, physics has never been more fun. Great work, Ms. Tomon!

A Busy Summer For All

Sure, sure, those lucky teachers have the summer off. But many on our staff took full advantage of their professional development stipends to enrich their minds and their skills. Here’s just a sampling of “what I did on my summer vacation.” (See others on page 16, “HC Takes on the World.”)

Becky Antoniak, MS Latin

Leslie Whitaker, Physical Education

What: A whirlwind tour of Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland with three students and their parents. Discovered: a host of interdisciplinary links with her Latin curriculum, from mythological references and architecture/sculpture to music and religious traditions.

What: Lacrosse coaching certification, purchase of personal training and “hoop dancing” media. Discovered: The Maori skill of Poi twirling, a wonderful potential addition to our rhythmic section of the curriculum to develop coordination.

Heather Necomsky, US Fine Arts What: Photoshop 5 for her MacBook Discovered: Can still learn much close to home: took pictures during the snowstorm and found ways to teach the girls about finding composition in nature, using cropping, editing, and other manipulative tools.

Denise Stablein, Diversity Coordinator Sarah Willging, MS Religion What: Two-week trip to Poland, Germany, Amsterdam to become prime Holocaust Educators (related to the Bearing Witness program sponsored by the ADL). Discovered: The disorientation of a train ride through the countryside on the way to the concentration camps, the eerie scenes at Krakow and Auschwitz, with piles of human hair made into rugs and cloth, and the realization, at the training center at Saxenhausen, that people had to be taught evil like this, even being tested—they had to kill a dog to show their lack of hesitation.

Dale Cummings, MS Religion What: Nine-day tour of Israel as part of the 2010 Bearing Witness Advanced Program sponsored by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL); the trip followed introductory seminars (available only to those who had completed basic Bearing Witness course). Discovered: In addition to biblical sites (Garden of Gethsemane, Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Temple Mount, the Sea of Galilee), we met Hannah Pick, Anne Frank’s childhood friend, and traveled with a Holocaust survivor. “I had a very personal experience with Israel and gained a new understanding about the importance of the State of Israel to the Jewish people and the dynamics of the political realities which impact both the Jewish and non-Jewish populations.”

Mary Hopkins, MS Head What: “Online School for Girls,” a two-week online course on new classroom methods for online learning. (Also traveled to California for the Cornelia Connelly Curriculum project with fellow Holy Child administrators, above.) Discovered: Don’t use technology for technology’s sake, but new platforms such as Prezi (a nonlinear Powerpoint) and ScreenToaster (to present websites) can link to students in new and exciting ways, and even blogs give many in our classes a voice they may not have had.

Tim Hester, US Religion What: New MAC laptop; attended National Catholic Educators Association Convention in Minneapolis. Discovered: With laptop, experimented with uses of social networking for good, such as Twitter on world religions and liturgy. At convention found a new phrase for living, “With every decision we make and every word we speak…Does this bring glory to God?”

athletics Field of Dreams

Who thought that a rather ugly duckling of a rugged, oddly shaped sports field, unworthy of ISL tourneys and spurned by outside teams, could turn into a swan of a stadium with stateof-the-art scoreboard and regulation turf and a beautiful bleacher section? A strong core of donors and planners and designers and builders believed, and with the broad-based support of staff and the community at large, they have delivered a beautiful asset to the school, which will benefit all students in PE classes and attract both students and the public to the only turf field at a Catholic girls school in Montgomery County. Not to mention the possibility, dare we say it, for movie nights under the stars? It wasn’t an easy road; after fall permit delays (at least our championship soccer season got to have its home field!), our planned winter construction was hampered with numerous weather challenges. Who could have foreseeen three solid feet of snow, the worst in a century? The students, especially the seniors, endured bus trips to Avenel, a season without home games, far-flung practices, and parking lots dominated by backhoes and dump trucks. On a glorious last day of school, at long last, “Homeroom on the Field” settled in around the giant tiger paw in the field’s center, as fireworks sprayed across the scoreboard and students frolicked, and the entire school celebrated the new home of the Holy Child Tigers. —K.H.E.

athletics athletics reaches new heights

A

s the new field took shape, and the athletics department showed just what it means to be flexible, the whole range of teams nevertheless rose over and above the challenges to reach new pinnacles of success. Two championships and best-ever seasons across the board continued to prove that the future is bright for the Holy Child sports program.

Not Soft on Softball The cryptic code on the championship T-shirt says it all: FTG. Somehow, a gnome became the Varsity softball team’s mascot (thanks to one Caroline O’Donnell). The smiling statue begat a post-game tradition, and spurred the team on to win the ISL Tournament championship. Playing “For the Gnome” was their buzzword, and good will and cohesion helped them post a fine season. With sound pitching and big bats—and a great manager on the bench— they showed their mettle by coming back in the tourney to soundly beat (14-10) a Sidwell Friends team that had beat them by ten just days before. They were rewarded with the placement of two players on the ALL-ISL squad. Anticipation is high for a new start in the spring, on a fast turf infield. —K.H.E.

Jessica Johnston heads the Middle School team (far right); Varsity charges with Clare DeLaurentis (#13), Meg Dean (#21), Jessie Ely (#14), and ZZ Krebs (#3).

Soccer Strikes Gold Who knows what will happen when a new coach joins a squad? The Varsity soccer team, led by seniors Jessie Frech (now playing at University of Connecticut) and Clare DeLaurentis at midfield and Emma Vignali in goal, came up big. With former Freedom/University of Maryland player, now Coach Danielle Malagari, at the helm, the team delivered a solid record 6-1 in the conference, 7-4 overall. The team took the ISL A championship trophy for their coach’s initial season. A great start!

A Real Spike in Volleyball Our volleyball efforts were always valiant, with science teacher Oceanna Kuonen and enthusiastic players over the years, but our seasons, like too many shots, fell short. Then came longtime volleyball coach Gregory Norris, who had coached numerous high school teams, and run training camps for two decades. Norris came to Holy Child last fall, and managed to produce our most successful season in school history. We even had an All-ISL player, Mel Mikus (at right, honorable mention). This summer, he ran a volleyball camp on campus, and revved up enough enthusiasm that we now have a freshman team in addition to Varsity and JV, with solid squads across the board.

Cross Country

Field Hockey Field hockey had a rich group of seniors on the team (Kelly Whelan is playing for Rhodes College; others opted for lacrosse). Mary Kate Virostek played hard each and every game; indeed, it has been a united team effort to bring the program to where it is, as Coach Joanne Engstrom notes, stronger and stronger every season.

The 2009-2010 team was quite competitive over the course of the season, actually setting the tone for a rebuilding process in our cross-country program. Mary Katherine (MK) Green was our top performer (running in the lead at top), earning her rightful place on the podium by being selected as an All-ISL Cross Country Runner. The enthusiastic teammates are (top, from left) Charlotte Barry (’11), Katrina Dyzak (’12) MK Green and Erin Norcross (both ’10). Fall 2010 - Connelly Contact

Catch Me If You Can “Follow the bouncing ball” may sound like

Swim Although our aquatic center is not yet built (despite the seniors’ best efforts), and the girls have to travel to Holton, Georgetown Prep, and numerous other pools around the region, our team manages to compete mightily in meets throughout the year. Erin Kale (top) was often a strong contender, but everyone contributed. Freshmen Trisha Sobrino, Casey Gardella and Ashleigh Popera were often at the pool early and made a big splash throughout the season. Our dive team also did exceptionally well, and senior Abby Sanders is going on to dive for Fairfield University.

the familiar refrain of the late Mitch Miller, but to the girls carefully focusing—and bouncing exuberantly—up and down the halls outside the gym, it’s much more than a singalong. Bal-A-Vis-X a series of balance/auditory/ vision exercises dealing with rhythm and focus was developed by Bill Hubert in Wichita, Kansas, back in the sixties, but in the last several years, it has exploded as a tool in learning with everyone from special ed students to senior citizens and everyone in between. Not only has teacher (and dance instructor) Leslie Whitaker championed it for all of the HC phys ed classes, educators throughout the school have found it a valuable tool for predicting learning styles, cognitive development, and a host of brain functions. According to Whitaker, Bal-a-Vis-X, combined with Carla Hannaford’s Dominance Profile and Paul Denison’s Brain Gym (used by Kathy Famulare and others in the Connelly Program), gives the student a sense of self-knowledge and ownership in regards to their learning styles and needs. “The amazing thing,” notes Middle School head Mary Hopkins, “is that Bal-A-Vis-X test results have roughly equaled extensive outside testing done by expensive experts. And it’s fun!” –K.H.E. Check out a video of the girls with their bouncing balls at www.holychild.org/URL TK.

MJ’s Lax Awards Stack Up

Lacrosse Nets It Out Lacrosse had a banner year, with numerous individual

accolades, including Coach Sarah Aschenbach being named manager of TEAM USA U-18 squad, MJ Coyle’s recognitions (see sidebar, with coach) and four players going on to play in college. They had a tough last game in the ISLs, but still managed runner-up status as a follow-up to their 2009 championship. The JV team, however, bodes well for the future of the program—they were undefeated! Charging ahead are Cassie Tkac and Daniela Falcone (above), and Sarah Falk (’11) and Erica Vassos (’10) (at right).

Mary Jeanne Coyle (MJ), who is off to Georgetown University to play on its Division I Hoyas team, had a banner year playing lacrosse, garnering numerous national and local honors this past spring to top off her successful high school career. She was named to the prestigious UnderArmour AllAmerica team, playing for the South All Stars in the games over the July 4th weekend at Towson University outside of Baltimore. This select group of 44 high school senior girls (with an equal number of boys) is chosen by a panel of lacrosse experts at Inside Lacrosse magazine, with nominations from high school coaches and the public at large, and input from college coaches nationwide. This was in addition to her all-conference honors (see entire All-ISL slate on previous spread), and recognition by the Gazette newspapers, who selected her for the All-Gazette first team. She also received honorable mention All-Met by the Washington Post. MJ, we’ll surely miss your skills, not to mention your “We conquer” chant in the huddle! —K.H.E.

Parents in Action The Parents Club was reincarnated this spring as

the Parents Association, primarily to ensure that the entire parent community realized that they were members automatically. The association exists primarily to unite the parents and guardians, communicate the happenings of the school, and support its events and fundraisers. But more than that, it’s a place to meet those like-minded individuals who made the same choices as you—to send your daughters to a Holy Child institution! The 2009 President Mollie Prominski (this year’s co-President) was joined by moms Helen Jorgensen (whose husband re-started the Fathers Club, a member organization) and Cindy Troiano in our first day of school ritual: handing out goodie bags (with a little breakfast muffin and water) to those morning drivers getting back in the swing.

Food For Thought Between the cries of “What’s for dinner?” and “Do I look fat?” parents of teenage girls constantly grapple with the daily challenge of how to manage the whole eating scene in their households. So it was with rapt attention that a group of parents—from Middle and Upper school— listened to the experienced advice of Ann Gerber, a licensed and registered dietitian who spoke at a winter Parents Club meeting. Gerber, who works with doctors and individuals on everything from eating disorders to providing nutritional consultation with athletes, addressed the particular challenges of keeping girls healthy, both physically and emotionally. Offering concrete choices of what snacks to have around (if junk isn’t there, they can’t eat it!) and how certain foods react with our bodies, she also talked of how to encourage positive body image, and how we create subtle pressures with messages we don’t even know we’re sending. The questions were rapid-fire, the snacks were healthy (no chocolate chip cookies?!)—and the parents stayed long past the allotted time. We may have to invite her back! —K.H.E.

The Moms Were Bookin’

It was a cold and stormy night, but still more than thirty moms dragged themselves back to school for the first quarterly (we hope) “Book and a Bottle” event. Numerous new parents and a strong 7-th grade contingent settled into the library and enjoyed a lively evening of chat and getting to know one another, not to mention a glass of vino. And there actually was an inspiring conversation about the book selection, The Help by Kathryn Stockett. All were thrilled to be there at the beginning of this new tradition; look for notice of this fall’s gatherings…and send your book suggestions to Meg Mayo (mmayo@holychild.org). —K.H.E. You Can Go Home Again… Holy Child Students Are Reunited

1999

Classes young and not so young gathered to reconnect this past year, many of them right here on campus. The classes of 1969, 1979, and 1984 held cocktail receptions in McShain Library; the Class of 1989 opted for a family picnic on campus for their 20th reunion. Jessica Colburn welcomed the Class of ’94 to her home for brunch. Other classes ventured to local watering holes to raise a glass and find out the dirt on their classmates: Class of ’99 had a happy hour at DC’s Aroma Company, while the girls from 2004 headed to Ireland’s Four Courts, the James Joyce Room, in Arlington.

The Luck of the Irish As a junior at Holy Child, my world

consisted of AP English, homeroom in the gym, and dreaded runs up the Avenel hill for track practice. The farthest I had to travel was down River Road for a slice of Potomac Pizza, and of course, the beltway every day from Virginia. Little did I know that across the ocean, there was another fellow Holy Child student who lived in the same world. Only hers consisted of lessons in Gaelic, hot tea breaks, and umbrellas. Holy Child gave me the opportunity of a lifetime: to partner with another Holy Child student in our sister school in Holy Child Killiney, Ireland and spend two exciting weeks with her and her family. That

same student would later head to the U.S. and spend two weeks at my house. Dorothy Chestnutt (“Dot”) and I bonded immediately, and soon created many fond memories. Over the years, thanks in part to email, we stayed in contact, filling one another in on our new friends and college experiences. In my junior year at Catholic University, I was selected for an internship in Irish Parliament in Dublin, in addition to taking classes. I immediately called up Dot to tell her the good news. In addition to being a familiar friendly face, she turned out to be a godsend. I lost my luggage en route, so I arrived for a six-month stay without one item

of clothing. One tearful call to Dot was all it took, and she rushed over with toiletries, pajamas, T-shirts, and some much-needed Cadbury chocolate. Dot and I spent the next couple of months catching up and simply enjoying one another’s company. In April 2009, I was finally able to take my younger sister, Sinead (’02), on a week-long trip to the “homeland.” We toured the Guinness Factory, kissed the Blarney Stone, visited the house my grandfather grew up in, and, of course, saw Dot and her family for some delicious home-cooked meals. Much to our delight, Dot came to NYC on a special three-month work assignment this past January, so we

Sinead Dinkel (’02) and Siobhan Dinkel (’00) go abroad and reunite with Dorothy Chesnutt to visit Holy Child Killiney in Dublin, Ireland.

were once again able to connect during her time here. Despite the ocean that separates us, Dot and I have remained close friends for over ten years now. The luck of the Irish must be with us! —By Siobhan Dinkel (’00)

The Long Journey Home His name is Dat Nguyen, and most Holy Child folks know him as the father of Emily (’10), Clara (’04), Catherine (’97) and Martha Nguyen (’95). What they may not know is that he witnessed firsthand the horrors of the Vietnam War. This past March, he came to Sra. Meyer’s Senior Humanities class to share many of those remembrances. The soft-spoken yet strong dad shared candidly how he and his family saw their relatives and friends uprooted when the country was split in two, and saw violence up close when rockets blared down the valley from his school and children were killed on soccer fields. He spoke of the richness of the language, and how you can never fight a war without understanding the people and the culture. He told what some students characterized as a “harrowing tale” of escaping his fallen country just days before the Fall of Saigon, crouching in the belly of a C-130 with nothing but fear of the zinging bullets, and starting from rock bottom in his adopted “land of the free.” Patriotism shown in his eyes as he recounted the long journey to a new homeland, in what one senior called “the epitome of the American dream.” Luckily, Mr. Nguyen was reunited with his girlfriend, soon to become Mrs. Hai Nguyen. Together they had

one son and four daughters, all Holy Child graduates. The rest is Holy Child history. Spurred by the touching story of “Mother Connelly” and the spiritual tradition, the Nguyens chose the Connelly School for their first daughter: “We wanted The Nguyen Clan at Emily’s graduation last June. From left to right: Mr. Dat Nguyen, Martha to be cherished by such Clara Nguyen (’04), Catherine Nguyen (’97), Emily Nguyen (’10), Martha Nguyen (’95) and Mrs. Hai Nguyen a spirit of faith, of love and of hope,” and the rest followed on. Holy Child followed by a law degree from the Georgetown was a good choice for all, says Mr. Nguyen: “It University Law Center in 2003. She is now impacts each one of them in a very personal regulatory counsel for the U.S. Food and Drug way: it’s a teacher or a group of friends that Administration. Catherine Nguyen also went to they keep until this day, not to Georgetown (graduating in 2001), and followed mention a good education that it up with law school as well, at Catholic. She prepared them well for college.” is now an associate at the Reed Smith LLP/ Most recent graduate, Emily, Law Firm. Mrs. Nem remembers Clara well; her is heading to Catholic University more artistic side took her away from the legal this fall, continuing the hardworkpath of her older sisters. (Holy Child serves ing tradition of this longstanding many personalities.) She majored in Visual Arts Holy Child family. Her oldest at the University of Maryland, and is using her sister, Martha, luckily made it talents well as the visual manager at the stylish to Emily’s graduation celebraAnthropologie in Georgetown. tion; she delivered son James After getting her brood settled in school, Francis Wright-Nguyen just two Mrs. Nguyen went to work for the nonprofit weeks later, who joined big brother Luke, now organization Ten Thousand Villages; she’s now two years old. A Proud Family Tradition Top: The Bellino Legacy: Kathleen Bellino Hickey (’96), Marianne Bellino (’98), Kelly Bellino (’00), Megan Bellino (’02), Mara Bellino (’06) and Kerry Bellino (’10). Bottom: Meg Bellino (’02), sitting in front row on left, was a member of Mrs. Whitaker’s Middle School dance team back in the late 90’s.

When Kerry Bellino (’10) graduated this June, it marked the end of a remarkable eighteen-year run of a Bellino girl walking the halls of Holy Child. She followed sisters Kathleen (’96), Marianne (’98), Kelly (’00), Megan (’02), and Mara (’06): It was 1992 when Kathleen first enrolled in the freshman class and Marianne in the middle school. And the impact these young women have had on the Holy Child community is a lasting one. Intelligent, talented, and athletic, the Bellinos excelled in all areas of the school. Through industrious and vigorous efforts, the girls asserted themselves academically, and while they earned high marks and scores, their sincere desire to learn is what impressed their teachers the most. Four sisters were in chorus, and athletics especially benefitted from the Bellino spirit. Kathleen was a talented gymnast; Marianne, Kelly, Mara, and Kerry were swim and dive team members. Marianne and Megan also played lacrosse, and Kerry volleyball. Kelly was a standout catcher in softball, a challenging task following an All-Met pitcher. But it is their diligent and unrelenting drive to serve their community that truly distinguishes their Holy Child legacies. All took active roles in the faith life at school, active in and leading service

clubs. They made sandwiches for Martha’s Table and traveled with McKenna’s Wagon to distribute them; tutored at Ivymount, a school serving autistic students. The club Operation Smile had three Bellinos serve as its president. As a family and as individuals, the Bellino sisters embodied many Holy Child values during their time here; they routinely worked for justice, peace, and compassion. As Campus Minister Jean Plummer says, “With a Bellino around, you always knew you had someone to count on when a helping hand was needed.” The sisters continue to excel and serve in their post-Holy Child lives. A naval researcher, Kathleen still finds time to mentor in a Big Sister program and tutor in math. Marianne was selected as valedictorian of her class at Holy Cross University, an honor based on academic performance as well as embodying the values of a Jesuit education. Kelly, the proud mother of one-year-old daughter Nora, uses her degrees in social work and counseling at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. With her doctorate in physical therapy from Temple University, Megan works with patients with orthopedic and neurological injuries. Mara, who was selected by her classmates to speak at her commencement from James Madison University, is pursuing her master’s degree in special education. Kerry started her first semester at Virginia Tech this fall. The Bellino girls are people we are proud to say graduated from Holy Child. They are strongly focused on the things that matter the most in life: faith, family and commitment to serve others. Their dedication and presence will be sorely missed by all of us in the school community. As longtime phys ed teacher Leslie Whitaker says, “I have never known Holy Child without a Bellino. I used to get the girls’ names confused: As the years went by and I taught more siblings, I would tell tell them, ‘Be glad you are not a Bellino; if you are Kerry, you will have to wait until I get through all six before I get the correct name!’ ” —Stephen Wicker, English Department

Dressed For Success?

Career Gals Consultants and realtors and teachers, oh my. Once again, HC alums made their way back to their alma mater to share the wisdom of the working world. Career Day 2010, April 16, brought more than 40 working women back to campus to share their experiences, their advice, and some concrete information about jobs in a range of fields. It was a diverse array for this biennial event: marketing gurus for fashion and e-commerce; numerous lawyers, from both firms and government agencies; a range of creative types, from an artist to film production assistant to Web producer to the head of Condé Nast’s digital division; a police officer, a dolphin handler. The health professions were well-represented, starting with our own school nurse, a couple of physical therapists, a speech pathologist and clinical psychologist. Jennifer Girardi McClosky (’80), a motivational speaker by trade, inspired the Upper School girls and the visiting eighth graders to reach for the stars. See how all that studying paid off! —K.H.E.

Top: The Science Panel: Desiree Gavilan Speicher (’98), Megan Bellino (’02) and Cindy Comerford Gillette (’79). Middle: Keynote Speaker, Jennifer Girardi McCloskey (’80) and Heather Nemcosky enjoyed catching up with one another at Career Day luncheon. Bottom: Jane Rosinski Grenier (’76), Suzie Stinson (’76) and Mary Jean Schmitt (’76) catch up on old times before heading to the gym to begin Career Day.

When Caitlin (not her real name) came into her first therapy session wearing an oversized sweatshirt, baggy jeans, and baseball cap, I knew her outfit was merely a disguise to cover her history of trauma, poor body image, and feelings of inadequacy. For the first time in a session, I used a wardrobe as a tool to identify pain and help relieve it. As a psychologist at Mindwell Psychology, specializing in adolescent and adult issues, I bear witness daily to patients expressing their internal feelings in external ways, particularly through their fashion choices. Drawing on these clinical experiences, I went on to create my own business, InsideOut: The Psychology of Dress, using my clients’ styles to help them understand and enhance their internal self. I “diagnose” their wardrobe, identify the internal root of their fashion difficulties, and provide an external makeover, all in the service of helping them enhance their internal view. I reach many more with my writing for media outlets; I have a blog for Psychology Today (www. psychologytoday.com/blog/the-psychologydress), and do articles for magazines (Town and Country, Cosmopolitan) as well as the Maryland Psychological Association and Rachel Simmons Girls Leadership Institute. I’m in the middle of writing a book, You Are What You Wear, to help women look good on the outside and feel better on the inside. We all learned well that the spirit of Holy Child is rooted in Cornelia Connelly’s desire to help others with a “love full of action.” It was in the closet, amongst shelves and drawers, that I discovered my passion for service. Helping others has become the most “fashionable” thing for me to do! —Jennifer Baumgartner (’95)

Making Disney Magic It was on Spring Break of my

senior year at Holy Child that my parents and I went on another family vacation to Disney World. After getting over my initial upset from missing out on going to Florida with my friends, I got just as excited as ever, especially for the Keys to the Kingdom, a limited behind the scenes tour. It was there, in a brief conversation Piglet, aka Meredith, clowns with her supportive parents, John and Narcy Hickman. with our guide about how I’d love to work in Disney, that I found out about the Disney College Program. After fulfilling the requirements: at least eighteen years of age, with at least one semester in a two- or four-year college (I was at the University of Maryland, College Park), I couldn’t wait any longer and applied for the Spring 2009 program (January-May). With numerous work options, from running rides and attractions to character performing, I knew I really wanted to be a performer. The idea of being “friends” (Disney’s term, as are those quoted below) with such recognized characters as Mickey and Minnie Mouse, not to mention creating magic for millions of kids and adults every day, was something I truly wanted. I was thrilled when accepted, after applying, interviewing and auditioning, as a character performer! I would spend my time in Disney working as characters within my “mouse” height range of 4’10”-5’1”—such characters as Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Stitch, Piglet, and more, sometimes changing daily. I’d be in restaurants and on “set location” doing “meet and greets,” including pictures, signing autographs and interacting with guests. Each interaction was different and magical, from the 3-year-old boy who didn’t want to stop kissing and hugging Minnie Mouse, to the Make-AWish girl with cancer (with only a month to live) visiting Piglet at the Crystal Palace Restaurant. I couldn’t help but smile or even cry sometimes. I extended my stay there through the summer, allowing family and friends to enjoy great discounts; fellow Holy Child alumnae Sam Cooper (’07) and Ashley Benson (’07) were able to come visit. Ashley and I even took a Disney Cruise! I’m now the Program Representative at the University of Maryland, a seasonal employee, allowing me to return and work when available. My Disney internship offered more than just a great experience for any future employment, even if I didn’t get credit towards my major (Elementary Education Specializing in Science and Math). I did it for my love of Disney, and the opportunity to create magical memories for thousands of guests, as so many characters had done for me. –By Meredith Hickman (’07) 50

annualreport From the Headmistress “We never know what we can do until we try. Perseverance gains the crown.” —Cornelia Connelly Dear Friends, As we reflect on the events of the 2009/2010 school year, these words of Cornelia Connelly seem most appropriate. In spite of continuing economic challenges and the worst winter in history, the Holy Child community witnessed many successes. Like most independent schools, we are tuition driven. Consequently, our development efforts are vital to providing an optimum and teaching environment for our faculty and students. We are deeply grateful to all who gave of their time and treasure to: the Fall Classic, Gala, Tiger Shop, Mayfield Market and the Annual Fund. This report is dedicated to those named in this Annual Report. Of course, all of us take pride in the accomplishments of our students year after year. Once again, Holy Child’s reputation for academic excellence was evident in the accomplishments of the Class of 2010. Our graduates will be attending 52 colleges in 21 states and France. The list of colleges accepting our girls can be seen on the opening page of this publication. Moreover, the class of 2010 was awarded more than one million dollars in merit scholarships and a number of our graduates will continue their athletic careers at the following schools: Dickinson College, Fairfield University, Georgetown University, Gettysburg College, Lynchburg College, Rhodes College, Villanova University and the University of

Connecticut. We will miss these young women and look forward to welcoming them back as our newest alumnae. As a Holy Child school we are committed to the goals for Schools of the Holy Child Jesus. These goals articulate those of our foundress, Cornelia Connelly. Specifically, Goal Seven, “to plan for development of Holy Child education in the School,” calls us to have an updated Strategic Plan that is reviewed regularly. These are just a few of the strategic priorities that were achieved this past year: a 30% increase in our applicant pool, an enhanced academic support program and formalization of the Connelly Program, a new turf field and a significant increase to our financial aid budget. Our Strategic Plan is a working document. As we move into the 2011 school year, the Board of Trustees will identify new goals for the coming school year and share these with you in the months ahead. In closing, it seems fitting to quote the Middle States Validation Team, who visited last October. “Although Connelly School of the Holy Child is truly unique in many ways, its true uniqueness lies in the hearts of all its stakeholders.” As a recipient of this report, you are one of our stakeholders. Thank you for being a part of our present and a key to our future. With my gratitude and prayers, Maureen K. Appel Headmistress

Dear Holy Child Community, We enter the 2010-2011 school year welcoming our largest freshman class in four years. In spite of the economic challenges we all face, clearly parents recognize the exceptional environment and education that Holy Child continues to provide for their daughters. Our faculty and staff continue to impress with their dedication and commitment to do more with less, and to make sure we have the resources to provide financial aid to those families who need it. A brand new outdoor stadium greeted the students as they returned from summer break. Through the generosity of our donors, we now have a facility that is clearly the best of any girls school in the region. We expect that it will not only enhance our athletics program, but also provide increased enrollment. Indeed, we have already seen a boost in our numbers. Our Honors Programs, Advanced Placement Classes and the 52

Connelly Program, among other things, differentiate Holy Child as a small private school that can successfully educate a spectrum of students, from National Merit Scholars to those with learning differences. Like any other private school, development and annual giving are essential to our budget. Tuition does not pay all of the costs of operating our school. I thank you for your past gifts, and ask that you continue to make Holy Child a philanthropic priority. As a past parent, I know what a difference a Holy Child education makes for our girls. It is only possible through your generosity. With thanks, Patrick J. Caulfield Chair, Board of Trustees

A Cherished Friend Mr. Nelson E. Shawn, a cherished member of the Holy Child community, passed away on March 6, 2010. Nelson was known by all at Holy Child: students, faculty, staff and parents who got to know him during the ten years he volunteered at the School. Nelson was an amazing man. He was an All-American lacrosse player at Johns Hopkins University, where he also played baseball, football and basketball. He received his degree in Engineering and worked for the Bell Company for more than 35 years, never missing a day of work. His wife of 30 years, Mary Riley, passed away in 1980. Nelson’s beloved son-in-law, Col. Steven Fisher, preceded him in death last November. Nelson is survived by his daughter, Patti Fisher, grandson Patrick Fisher and granddaughter Riley Fisher (’07), and by countless friends in the Holy Child community and beyond. Riley (at right) stands with her granddad and 2008 classmates Kelsey Donaldson and Chen Elliot on Grandparents’ Day 2007. Nelson received a special award from Holy Child that day. www.holychild.org

Involvement in the arts and athletics is at the heart of Cornelia Connelly’s teachings. Every Holy Child student practices, plays or participates in PE on the School’s main athletic field. So to meet the needs of the age, Holy Child initiated the “Perfect Pitch” campaign to gather funds to construct an artificial turf field. Now that our beautiful green (and brown) turf is in place, we can finally host ISL tournaments on our regulation-size field, run concurrent Middle School practices with ease and seat our fans in comfort. But we can also attract the public at large to the only Catholic girls school in Montgomery County with an athletic facility of this caliber. This improvement will go a long way in enhancing our reputation as a school. It’s an amazing accomplishment that we kicked off this campaign just a little over two years ago; so many people worked tirelessly to bring in the bulk of the funds. We thank those who gave their unending time and their dollars (see the details below, and on the new plaque to be placed alongside the field). But we want you to know that the final touches are yet to be made, so there is still time to make your donation. Please contact Suzi Montes de Oca at smontes@holychild.org for information on how you can still contribute. Raising money, building community

A Big Hit Celebrating a decade of Holy Child golf and tennis, the

Annual Fall Classic (October 19 at Kenwood Country Club) proved once again that friendly competition is always jovial! The golfers provided their best ever efforts in the “Best Dressed Category” with teams consisting of board members (Casey Aiken, David Straus, Todd Brydges and Bill Brydges) and alumnae (Kay Kalhorn, Cathy Delahay, Liz Delahay and Barb Murray) winning prizes. The tennis players had the best showing of faculty and staff in the history of the tournament. The winners, however, were the Holy Child students: they reap the benefits of this tournament every year with proceeds going towards academic programs.

Shop ’Til You Drop Santa’s workshop is no busier or fun than Mayfield Market, our annual shopping bazaar named for the Holy Child convent in England. The weekend before Thanksgiving brings hundreds onto campus in search of gifts and personal items; this year featured jewelry aplenty, along with hand-painted ceramics, benches, and shoes; unique jackets and snuggly blankets; the requisite Lilly Pulitzer clothing and accessories; paintings and pen-andink originals; even newfound men’s items. Several alumnae came back as vendors, such as Paz Velasco-Galey (’82, at left) with personalized items from her local company Namedroppers. And our Tiger Bakery was sweeter than ever, with home-cooked goodies from fancy cakes to brownies for sale. What could be better, shopping for a good cause: our girls.

Flower Children for Holy Child Age of Aquarius turned out to be a theme like no other for the 2010 Annual Gala and Auction. Terms like “cool” and “groovy” peppered conversations, while music from the “decade of love” played in the background. Gala-goers got in the spirit of their inner hippie in digs of polyester, plaid and paisley, with sightings of Afro wigs and go-go boots everywhere in the transformed Congressional Country Club venue. The auction room was lively as good-natured and competitive bidding went on; the proceeds from this, our biggest fundraiser, went directly to educational funding for our students.

Gala 2010 returns to campus on April 9, 2011 Stay tuned for an equally fun theme!

Fun with the Sixties: (from top) Steve “Afro” and Joanne Virostek flanked by Stacey and Joe DeGiorgi; chair Joan Vassos and husband John; Rita Wooly Devine and John Hollingsworth; colorful bidding by Ali Bratun; Judy and Al Arcidiacono. Fall 2010 - Connelly Contact
