A LETTER FROM DR. GOMEZ

Dear Holy Child Community, Cornelia Connelly founded her first Holy Child school in 1846. Always ahead of her time, her approach to education was innovative for its time. After seeking the counsel of an American Jesuit, she was led “to the vision of a new religious order, free of the restrictions of strict cloister, that would ‘meet the wants of the age’ through direct action with people in need.”

As Holy Child grows and evolves, Cornelia’s vision helps to guide us with our mission of educating young women. The phrase "meet the wants of the age" is one that we reflect on often. We treasure the time-honored traditions of Holy Child, and they are valued as part of our daily lives and history. However, it is important to be agile and adaptable so that we can best serve our students as the demands of our society evolve.

In the fall of 2018, we were proud to unveil and open our new community spaces on campus.

The design of these newly innovated areas allows for flexible learning environments that provide students and faculty opportunities to collaborate. Students at Holy Child have the opportunity to work together in the classroom to problem-solve, communicate, and build their creativity skills through engaging discussion, research, and debate. They can also utilize one of our Innovation or Study Rooms to work on a group project or study independently for a test. Each space is uniquely designed to allow our girls an opportunity to learn in their own way.

This personalized learning experience for our students is the hallmark of a Holy Child education and aligns with Cornelia Connelly’s vision. Now that we have specially designed spaces that are flexible and collaborative, teachers can integrate 21st century skills and abilities into each and every lesson by facilitating student-led discussions, debates, and more, allowing our teachers to make learning more engaging. The adaptability of these innovative spaces - from the classrooms, to the study rooms, and even Connelly Commons - allows our students to experience instruction that is consistent with the future demands of the changing workplace.

As we highlight in our strategic plan, Holy Child “embraces the individual talents and passions of its students, uses research-based strategies, provides cutting-edge technology and resources, instills a joy of learning, and inspires young women to make a difference.” We will continue to keep Cornelia Connelly’s words of wisdom close as we prepare our students to go into the world as women of faith and action.

FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES CHAIR

Dear Holy Child Community, Our good friend Merriam Webster defined the word innovation as, “the introduction of something new." But I was also cautioned early in my career that not everything new is good for the particular situation into which it is brought. No worries about that happening with the completion of the Innovate the Space capital improvement project. It was innovative, it was cutting edge, and it was great for the Holy Child school and community.

On October 14th, members of the Board of Trustees attended Father Bill Byrne’s blessing of the various capital improvement facilities which were executed under the Innovate the Space project. This was a three year campaign to bring classroom facilities into the 21st century, far ahead of any other schools within the area, and to bring a new common room, study rooms, and athletic training/treatment facilities to Holy Child.

Successful innovation also tends to take time and the efforts of many dedicated people at various levels, as we saw with this project. The creative concept of the project by Dr. Gomez and the Board, the budgeting, architectural designs, construction planning, creative strategy, implementation, and the resounding fundraising commitment from countless people in the Holy Child community, were all required elements for this successful project. Though I was present on October 14th for the official ceremony, as the current Chair of the Board, it was Sean Glynn and Nancy Binnie, my predecessor Chairs, who led the navigation through the numerous Board discussions, budgets, fundraising, and creative components of this project. Please accept my sincere gratitude to both of you for all of your leadership, efforts, and dedication to this most successful project.

The success of the Innovate the Space project underscores the need for the forward thinking that is a prime objective of any Board of Trustees. We manage the present but need to be on the forefront of looking to the future of the school. To that point, this year the Board is asking each of the various Board committees to take a deep dive into what they would like to achieve during the next 5, 10, 15 years. It is my hope that this will generate new thoughts, approaches, and visions for Holy Child. Innovation starts with ambitious ideas that can be realized, with dedication and support, at all levels for the good of the entire Holy Child community. Thank you, as always, for all of your support of Holy Child.

Campus News Written by Cara Price '19

GEORGETOWN MEDICAL SUMMIT: Holy Child students attended the Advanced Medical and Public Health Summit at Georgetown University this past summer. They spent the week learning about the four most prevalent diseases in the developing world: malaria, typhoid fever, acute respiratory infections (ARI), and nutritional anemia.

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL: The most exciting day in September began with seniors welcoming all of the Holy Child students back to campus. With the campus decked out in a Big Blue Wave, the class of 2019 danced and played music to get all of our Tigers pumped for the new school year. Time for class!

OPENING OF CONNELLY COMMONS: After months of renovations, the Tigers have a new cafeteria and community space. Students are found eating, hanging out with friends, studying, or grabbing a hot cocoa in this newly remodeled space. With a wall of windows and a room full of chatter, light fills the space!

TIGER TROT: The 8th Annual Tiger Trot 5K was held on September 23rd. Despite the heavy rain, the Holy Child community came out for a fun run and family activities, as well as Mass in the gym afterwards.

BLUE/GOLD: September concluded with another fantastic Blue/Gold Game Day. The intense, yet good-natured rivalry took center stage during the afternoon games, leading into a great party for our community under the lights.

WALKATHON: Holy Child students, faculty, and staff participated in our annual walkathon to support New Endeavors by Women! A beautiful day to be outside combined with a beautiful organization to support homeless women getting back on their feet. Big thanks to New Endeavors for their wonderful work!

FRESHMEN RETREAT: A big welcome to the class of 2022! S’mores and fire dancing kicked off the annual ninth grade retreat, followed by a praying of the Rosary in the Chapel and a slumber party in Connelly Hall. With peer groups led by seniors, new students had the opportunity to connect with upper classmen and participate in ice breakers to get to know one another better.

FALL RECITAL: This event is an intimate and outstanding performance by our Arts Department. Students sang and played their instruments, and there were special faculty guests who performed for the audience as well!

HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH SPEAKER: Stephanie Valencia, former Special Assistant to the President and Principal Deputy Director of Public Engagement with the Obama Administration, spoke to students about her educational journey and her time in the White House. She also provided background to her book, "West Wingers."

MIDDLE SCHOOL MUSICAL: The Mad Hatter paid a visit to Potomac in a magical performance of "Alice in Wonderland, JR" by our middle school!

With all the classic characters brought to life on our own stage, it was a day to remember.

Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah!

GLOBAL EXCHANGE PROGRAM: This fall, Holy Child students participated in an exchange program by hosting a Spanish student for a few weeks from Monaita, a Catholic school in Granada, Spain. The visiting students were immersed in the American experience by living with a Holy Child host family, taking classes with their host student and visiting museums, monuments, historic sites, and more!

GRANDPARENTS' DAY: Grandparents and other special guests joined their granddaughters on Grandparents' Day for lunch, classes, a campus tour, and a special prayer service before starting Thanksgiving break.

STUDENT DIVERSITY LEADERSHIP: Holy Child's Student Diversity Committee attended the AIMS Baltimore Student Diversity Leadership on November 10th. At the conference, Holy Child students hosted a workshop on immigrants at the United States’ border.

CAMPUS BEAUTIFICATION: Holy Child students and parents braved the cold to plan for warmer weather. Holy Child Dad Marc Duffy (Claire ’21) organized a tulip planting project to plan for spring. Students and parents planted over 1,000 tulip bulbs to beautify our campus!

MOAS VICTORY: A group of students attended the Model Organization of American States (MOAS) in December. MOAS is an opportunity for students from many schools around the nation to collaborate and create resolutions on real-world issues in the Americas, which are later debated. At the end of the threeday conference, students voted on a new president for the national organization, and Holy Child junior Frida Perez won the election. Congratulations, Frida!

SHIFTING THE LANDSCAPE SYMPOSIUM: Jaden Faunteroy '21 attended the National Museum of African American History and Culture for the Shifting the Landscape Symposium.

The symposium specifically focused on black architects and planners from 1968 to now.

AWARD-WINNING TEACHERS: Two of our faculty members received the Catholic High School Teacher of the Year awards from the Archdiocese of Washington. Social Studies Teacher Ms. Craig received the Veteran Teacher of the Year Award and Math Teacher Ms. Jama received the Novice Teacher of the Year Award.

VETERANS DAY: In honor of Veterans Day, our sixth grade invited a few parent veterans for a special presentation where the students read poems and stories of gratitude for serving our country. It was a morning of inspiration and celebration for all attending.

BASKETBALL IN THE BAHAMAS: Our varsity basketball team traveled to Nassau, Bahamas over Christmas break. They had a great game, defeating a talented local Bahamian team, and had a fun dolphin experience while they were away. Before the trip, parents, players, and coaches collected towels, wash cloths, and vitamins that were then delivered to a local orphanage on behalf of the team.

CHRISTMAS CONCERT: Holy Child’s annual Christmas Concert showcased singing, dancing, and the best holiday cheer to brighten up exam week! A mixture of classics like "Christmas Canon" and "The Christmas Song" warmed the atmosphere, while an appearance of our very own Santa Claus filled the room with laughter and joy.

MAYFIELD MARKET: Mayfield Market, in its 15th year, with more than 60 vendors, welcomed hundreds of shoppers over the course of the weekend. Jen Ralston Kress ’85 (P ’12, ’17), who initiated this amazing Christmas shopping event, ended her reign as Chair, and handed over her duties to Yvonne Russell (P ’16, ’18). This year, six of our vendors were either alumnae or parents of alumnae, and more than 100 alumnae attended Mayfield Market.

BEST BUDDIES CHRISTMAS PARTY: Once again, we were thrilled to partner with Potomac Community Resources (PCR) and host the annual Best Buddies Christmas Party.

Holy Child values the uniqueness and dignity of each person, and this holiday celebration is a wonderful way to celebrate the season and be reminded that different is not less.

1. Carla Nally '04 is a new sixth grade teacher. Prior to her arrival at Holy Child, Ms. Nally worked at Stone Ridge in Bethesda. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in American Studies from Dickinson College and her Master in Education in K-12 Literacy from The University of Pennsylvania.

2. Molly Argersinger, Christian Service Coordinator and JV Field Hockey Coach, was born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She graduated from Georgetown University with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Classical Studies, and a minor in Theology. Prior to Holy Child, Mrs. Argersinger worked at Georgetown University’s Office of Advancement on the Annual Giving team.

3. Dani Perraut DeWitt, Chief Advancement Officer, has most recently served as the Associate Director of Development at Georgetown Prep. Previous positions include her roles as Development Director for the Order of Malta and Director of Marketing and Communications for the National Foundation for Cancer Research. Mrs. DeWitt is a graduate of Loyola University in Baltimore.

4. Mark O'Dea joins the Religion Department as the 8th and 9th grade religion teacher. Mark earned his Bachelor of Philosophy and Theology from the University of Notre Dame, and recently completed his Master in Education at Providence College.

5. Sarah Kelleher joins the Academic Support team as a learning specialist. Before her arrival, she worked with students in grades Pre-K-8 in Westchester, NY while completing her graduate degree at Fordham University.

6. Chip Comstock joins the Math Department as a geometry teacher. Prior to working at Holy Child, Mr. Comstock had been a math teacher and Assistant Principal for Fairfax County Public Schools (retired) and Montgomery County Public Schools.

7. Alex Barr is the new middle school social studies teacher. Before Holy Child, Mr. Barr taught in Washington, D.C. and with Creighton’s Magis Catholic Teacher Corps. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame and has his Master in Secondary Education from Creighton University.

8. Sue Anna Clark is happy to be teaching Advanced Placement Psychology at Holy Child this year, following a 35-year career with Fairfax County Public Schools. In her final 12 years with FCPS, she introduced AP Psychology to Oakton High School students, where it quickly became the most requested AP course.

9. Audrey Schultz is the upper school English teacher for 9th and 11th grades. Before joining Holy Child, she worked as a Google Expeditions associate. Ms. Schultz has a Bachelor of Arts in English and Political Science from Ohio State University, and a Master in English from Georgetown University.

10. Olivia Hogan joins the Science Department as a middle school science teacher. Olivia graduated from Providence College with a dual degree in General and Special Education, and worked at Commonwealth Academy in Alexandria, VA before joining the Holy Child community.

11. Amanda Colburn is the upper school science teacher. She is pursuing her PhD in Science Education at George Mason University, and graduated from American University in Washington, DC with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. Prior to Holy Child, Ms. Colburn worked at Oak Ridge in Baltimore.

COUNSELING REIMAGINED Written by the Counseling Department

Effective school counseling programs are a collaborative effort between the school counselor, parents, and other educators to create an environment that promotes student achievement.

HOLY CHILD DELIVERS A COMPREHENSIVE COUNSELING PROGRAM that promotes the academic and social/emotional achievement of each student. Adopting appropriate components from the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) model, the Holy Child counselors have established the following standards: • Academic Counseling Standard: Students at Holy Child will demonstrate self-advocacy skills by applying time management, decision-making and problem-solving skills.

• Personal/Social Counseling Standard: Students at Holy Child will demonstrate positive attitudes towards themselves and others as unique and worthy individuals as measured by self-reflection.

• College/Career Counseling Standards: Students at Holy Child will understand the relationship between educational achievement and college/career success by demonstrating the following school and workplace behaviors: dependability, responsibility, punctuality, integrity, and effort. Additionally, students will increase their ability to demonstrate personal skills, abilities, and school/workplace behaviors.

In an effort to work towards realizing these standards, the counselors at Holy Child have developed direct student services (based on ASCA) that incorporate the following: a core counseling curriculum to include targeted instruction and group activities, individual student planning including evaluation of interests, abilities, and skills, advising on goal setting, and college/career options. Additionally, the counselors have established responsive and crisis services for individuals or small groups of students and/or families. These services will provide planned, short-term, goal-focused counseling, and navigation of emergency situations.

Through consultation and collaboration, the counseling team will provide indirect services by sharing strategies that support student achievement with teachers, parents, other educators, and community organizations where appropriate. The counseling team will offer referral information in support of students and families for any additional assistance on an as needed basis.

Specifically, the delivery of these services will include: a comprehensive orientation program, individual/group counseling, classroom guidance lessons, student success meetings, teacher and parent consultations, parent workshops and speakers, course registration advising, and college counseling.

As a team, their goal is to provide maximum student support, with a focus on improving student academic achievement and social/emotional development throughout each student’s Holy Child experience. Holy Child’s comprehensive counseling model ensures that every student has access to academic, personal/social, and college/career services that are both preventative and responsive. They work with students via classroom lessons, small groups, personal counseling, and school-wide events to develop strategies for managing their challenges and capitalizing on their strengths. Ther counselors also stay directly involved with academic interventions and course registrations, allowing the team further insight when working individually with students.

In its entirety, the comprehensive counseling model ensures that the counselors provide essential life skills to each student that support her academic success and enhance her personal growth, resulting in a comprehensive picture of each student as a whole and unique individual.

Social Entrepreneur Program

The Junior Entrepreneurship Program provides students in the 11th grade with real-world, hands-on learning experiences.

Students learn how to successfully identify problems, needs, and opportunities; test ideas that address those opportunities; and turn those ideas into products, services, and solutions that benefit society. The focus of the program is on innovation, leadership, and group work. Culminating in a “Shark Tank�-like presentation on a morning in late May, each group presents their product and business model to a panel of experts.

THE ENTREPRENEURSHIP PROGRAM WAS SOMETHING I MOST LOOKED FORWARD TO my junior year, and I was excited to take part in it. At the end of the year, juniors are split up into groups based on their Myers-Briggs personality test. The students are then given a task to create a product or service, which is then presented to the judges at the end of the week. This past year, the program evolved into a social entrepreneurship with a task to identify a problem, need, or opportunity in our community, and create a product or service that addressed that issue and benefited society.

The last week of May rolled around, and it was time for the program to begin. Each day, we dressed as if we were going to work and were treated as business professionals attending a conference. Every day was exciting and different. We had guest speakers all throughout the week: a psychologist who helped us to understand our MBTI- personality type; a college professor giving us tools to be good leaders and teammates; business women highly experienced in PR and marketing, one of whom was alumna Katie Tyson (pictured on the previous page); and a successful entrepreneur who was also one of the judges. Attending workshops and ultimately learning what it takes to start and maintain a successful business was fascinating and motivated us to come up with a great idea. We were placed into real world situations and our abilities and skills were tested and improved by learning to work cohesively with one another, deciding on concrete ideas, doing extensive research, and producing a final product or service.

Eager to jump into the program, my group came up with “Glam for Good,” a nonprofit service project designed to help long-term hospital patients build confidence and lift their spirits by providing self-care services including: makeup application, hair styling, manicures, pedicures, and more. Our goal was to help patients feel beautiful inside and out throughout their hospital stay.

Excited to have come up with an idea of which we were proud, we spent the week reaching out to makeup companies to sponsor us, creating a website, and designing our publicity materials. We received a full line of makeup from a company called Thrive Causemetics, who makes nontoxic makeup specifically made for cancer patients. We also decided “Glam for Good” would make prominent use of the color pink in our materials, paying homage to Breast Cancer Awareness.

On the morning of the presentation, nerves were high, but excitement and pride were higher.

As each group presented on the stage, it was clear everyone worked their hardest. No two ideas were the same, highlighting everyone’s creativity and uniqueness. It was my group’s turn and our hope was to be enthusiastic, positive and fun; the way we would be when travelling to the hospitals to deliver the services to patients who deserve it the most. We got up on stage and everything just clicked into place. Our nerves calmed, and we just had fun up there presenting the project about which we were so passionate.

Our hard work paid off! To our surprise, we were fortunate enough to be the winning team! The entrepreneurship program fostered our organization, and interpersonal and public speaking skills, challenged us to think outside the box, meet deadlines, and manage our time effectively, all while participating in a meaningful and unique program.

HOW THE PROGRAM STARTED Written by Kim Hogan, Director of Teaching & Learning, and Mary Hopkins, Former Assistant Head of School I N T H E S P R I N G O F 2 0 1 6 , M A R Y H O P K I N S , the then Assistant Head of School, proposed the Junior Entrepreneurship Program at Holy Child for Spring of 2017. The goals of the program would focus on helping students develop 21st century skills emphasizing critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication, and problem-solving. The program was developed in consultation with Marc Steren, author of The Student’s Guide to Entrepreneurship and an entrepreneurship teacher at Georgetown University and the Bullis School. Mr. Steren developed a method of teaching the fundamental tenants of entrepreneurship called BACCA or Belief, Association of Teams and Design Thinking, Canvas, Customer Development and Analytics. Using his model for teaching entrepreneurship, Holy Child launched its inaugural Junior Entrepreneurship Program. The program ran for two weeks in May, with each day focused on topics including: team-building activities, team challenges, field trips to small businesses, and guest speakers. Teams of students worked together to create innovative products and services using a business plan that included branding, market analysis, financial planning, and development of prototypes. The two week Entrepreneurship Program ended with a "Shark Tank"-like competition. All teams presented to a panel of judges made up of faculty and alums with extensive business acumen. The pitches themselves were innovative and exciting as teams made use of videography, audience participation, and demonstrations. Products included a phone case that functioned as a fidget to help with focus and attention, and an app to monitor homework assignments. The prize of $2,000 was awarded to the winning team members (Class of 2018's McKenna Gazdag, Eliza Caldwell, Geritza Carrasco, Olivia Welsh, and Audrey Fishbach) to be used towards launching their own company. The winner was "Lend Your Look," a website to facilitate dress exchange (similar to Rent the Runway) among Holy Child girls for dances and other significant events.

Following the important first year of the program, the administration and faculty took time to evaluate and reflect, and they decided that, rather than just developing marketable products, the Junior Entrepreneur Program needed a social component to match more closely with the school’s mission and beliefs. Led by Kim Hogan, Director of Teaching and Learning, the program was refocused to require the students to innovate a product or service to solve a real world issue and improve the lives of others. Eleven teams worked together over two weeks to research challenges in the areas of health care, education, agriculture, transportation, social services and safety and security. Each team identified a problem; they imagined ways to reframe the problem and create solutions using design thinking. Some teams created apps to provide information about services for the homeless, gun violence, drug safety, and education.

Other teams envisioned an educational kit for young children that would make them more active and a soap dispenser machine that would reduce the amount of plastic used for detergent. The winner was a non-profit company called "Glam for Good," that would provide makeovers for long-term hospital patients. This company proposed a partnership with area hospitals and a make-up company that specializes in make-up for cancer patients.

Looking forward to our third year, we hope to build on our success and to continue to develop our students into design thinkers who make a difference in our world.

About the Entrepreneur Program Judges Alexandra Patterson is a graduate of Holy Child's Class of 2010. Upon graduating from Holy Child, Alex continued her education at Virginia Tech. Alex is currently a System Engineer for Booz Allen Hamilton within the company's Defense and Intelligence Group where she provides software solutions to clients within the United States Intelligence Community.

Jennifer McCloskey graduated from Holy Child in 1980. She was the Lead Civil Engineer in the office of Environmental Management (EM), lead the seismic analysis of the largest construction project in the world, the Waste Treatment Plant in Hanford Washington. She was the feature of a CBS Evening News story on women in non-traditional roles as well as the subject of several newspaper articles highlighting her career in three different states.

Barry Rosenberg has been a teacher in our Math Department for the past eight years. He has a degree in Electrical Engineering and an MBA. Prior to coming to Holy Child, he was a Partner at Deloitte Consulting from 1990-2004 and then started an outsource advisory consulting firm, which he sold in 2007. His company helped Fortune 100 companies negotiate outsourcing deals with offshore service providers and major suppliers among other things.

Senior Internship Program

The internship program is designed to give seniors an opportunity to explore their career interests and gain experience working in a professional environment. It is a graduation requirement for each senior and must consist of a minimum of 30 hours or 4 work days performed onsite at a business or non-profit organization. Internships are unpaid positions and intended as a learning opportunity. This year, all internships must be completed between May 28th to June 4th, 2019.

AS DR. MARISSA BULGER CHATTED WITH HER AP LANGUAGE STUDENTS, she realized that, as teenagers today, they are facing a lot of stress and anxiety in their lives. They and their friends (at a variety of schools in the area) are staying up late to complete their work, trying to manage their own and their parents’ expectations, managing and curating their social media profiles, attending sports and/or play practice, and balancing work and community service. Despite this reality, teenagers are so often told that they are “just teenagers” and their stress isn’t “real” stress. They are feeling frustrated and overwhelmed.

Being the dedicated and innovative educator that she is, Dr. Bulger wanted to look for current research about how to help reduce adolescent stress and anxiety within her English classroom, but she found there wasn’t enough out there to tackle what she wanted to accomplish. So, Dr. Bulger asked herself, “Why shouldn’t I be the one to do the research?” and enrolled in the doctoral program at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Education.

Three years later, Ms. Bulger is now Dr. Bulger after completing her course work, conducting research, and successfully defending her dissertation in August 2018. Dr. Bulger developed a program with her Holy Child students in mind. She targeted her study on our ninth grade students, “since transitions can be especially stressful in adolescence.”

Through a needs assessment, which surveyed over 180 students and two key staff members, Dr. Bulger found that “many students experienced stress and anxiety, and were worried about disappointing themselves, their peers, their parents, and their teachers.” Through her research, Dr. Bulger learned about adolescent development and neuroscience. She took her newfound knowledge and made thoughtful, intentional, and innovative updates to her curriculum and instruction. Her most fruitful research came from working directly with her students. With each curricular and instructional decision she made, Dr. Bulger had students in mind. She invited their voices into the conversation. Dr. Bulger met with students in focus groups “to understand their reading experiences and [to analyze] their writing to gain insight into their thinking processes.”

With her students’ needs in mind, Dr. Bulger made professional decisions as an educator that she hoped would “reduce students’ stress and anxiety, increase their sense of autonomy, and alleviate their fears of failure.” In her ninth grade English classes, Dr. Bulger “drew from the research literature of bibliotherapy and reading for pleasure to implement a program in which students read self-selected young adult (YA) novels independently and a teacher-selected YA novel as a class community.

Students processed their reading in large group discussions, small group discussions, and reflective writing.” Dr. Bulger found her students to be interested, open, and generous in both sharing their thoughts and supporting her work.

As a result of her interventions, Dr. Bulger discovered that “students do not only develop their sense of self as they read, but they take the perspectives of others, a process that develops empathy and understanding of others’ struggles.” In today’s ever-connected, ever-diversifying world, it seems more important than ever for “students to connect to those who may not look like them, pray like them, or love like them.” The findings of her study convinced Dr. Bulger that “reading is one way that students understand our shared humanity.” In reading about diverse experiences, students gain the ability to connect to and respect others’ differences while also valuing their own uniqueness.

Cornelia Connelly would be proud to have such an enlightened and innovative professional as an educator in one of her schools. Dr. Bulger is an educator who is truly “meeting the wants of the age,” a key tenant of Cornelia Connelly’s educational philosophy. Dr. Bulger is a devoted professional whose expertise has enhanced the life of each student who has graced her classroom.

ON THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL, all of the students and faculty were ecstatic when they laid eyes on the new spaces. Every day, girls enjoy their lunches in the Connelly Commons. Winnie Beaudet (’19) says her favorite part about the Connelly Commons is that “there is always uplifting and fun music playing inside the commons.

I love looking around and seeing girls singing and laughing while they eat lunch. Also, when it is nice outside, we open up the Connelly Commons’ doors so that students can sit in the Hanley Courtyard.”

The Tiger’s Den is filled with girls from every grade socializing with their friends. The study rooms are the perfect spot to study in a quiet space or collaborate on a group project with your classmates.

These new spaces encourage the social and intellectual growth of each student.

Personally, my favorite space is the new Senior Lounge. Every morning, I walk into the Senior Lounge and see 52 girls laughing and conversing with one another before classes begin for the day.

We are all so grateful to have a space where we can bond and make memories as a class during our last year at Holy Child. Each new space has so much to offer!

New Athletic Facilities Written by Bailey Skeeter '19

I AM A STUDENT ATHLETE HERE AT HOLY CHILD, and when I heard we were creating new athletic spaces, I couldn’t have been happier.

For my final seasons of field hockey and basketball, I would be able to use the new fitness center, athletic training room, and team room as well. I have participated in sports during my entire time at Holy Child, but the addition of these new rooms has made me appreciate more of what Holy Child has to offer me as an athlete.

Just this year, I have been able to watch our athletic trainer, Mrs. Lewis-Roy, move into a huge space, located right beneath the gym, which is stocked with everything from foam rollers and bio-freeze to a state-of-the-art whirlpool. With this new space, she is able to work with student athletes to treat their injuries and begin rehab throughout the school day. Plus, the fitness center is right next door, which is even more convenient in helping athletes get back on the field or court. The layout is genius! Each room complements the other, and they are all accessible from the field and gymnasium.

Our basketball team (pictured above) has benefitted from pre-game team meetings; we get pumped up in our new team room with an amazing surround system. The huge white dry erase board allows our coach to draw up plays or explain the offense during halftime.

Holy Child Receives National Athletic Trainers’ Association Safe Sports School Award Holy Child has received the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Safe Sports School award for our Sports Medicine Program. The award champions safety and recognizes secondary schools that provide safe environments for student athletes. The award reinforces the importance of providing the best level of care, injury prevention, and treatment.

Our Athletic Trainer, Cara Lewis-Roy, is quoted saying: “Holy Child is honored to receive this 1st Team recognition from NATA, and we remain committed to keeping our student athletes safe during physical education classes, team practices and games so they can accomplish their own goals of great competition, winning records, fair sportsmanship and good health.

Our goal is to lead our athletics program to the highest safety standards for our players."

"We remain committed to the health and welfare of young athletes in competitive sports,” says NATA President Scott Sailor, EdD, ATC. “This award recognizes the contributions and commitment of schools across the country that are implementing safe sports policies and best practices to ensure athletes can do what they love best and have the appropriate care in place to prevent, manage and treat injuries should they occur.”

Teaching Students

for the 21st Century Upfront by Kim Hogan, Director of Teaching and Learning Article by Steelcase OVER THE PAST THREE YEARS, HOLY CHILD HAS BEEN COMMITTED to the innovation of our learning spaces to support our students and teachers by creating dynamic learning environments that are flexible and collaborative. Our first step was to implement two Steelcase piloted classrooms with Ms. Ida Pablo and Ms. Kaitlyn Valis. After receiving positive feedback from the students and teachers about the benefits of flexible seating, we began our Innovate the Space campaign with a commitment to innovate all our classrooms within three years using Steelcase furniture.

The next step was to learn how to design spaces that would impact a students’ learning environment and build a positive and dynamic learning experience between student and teacher in the classroom. A small group of teachers and administrators were sent to attend the Harvard Institute: Learning Environments for Tomorrow.

For three days, this leadership team worked through team-based design activities that looked at five areas: the needs of people, design principles, program goals, plans, and prototypes. We learned that furniture and design can create a sense of connection, create natural and spontaneous learning both in and out of the classroom, and foster collaboration through flexible room design.

We are thrilled to partner with Steelecase, a company that has done tremendous research in the area of 21st century school design. They have provided the research and design options that make our spaces dynamic learning environments where our students can prepare for the future ahead. The following article from Steelcase showcases how another school worked closely with the company to implement a 21st century design using Steelcase furniture.

SETTLED IN THE INTERNATIONAL HUB OF GENEVA, SWITZERLAND,

the Institute International de Lancy (IIL) is a school at the forefront of change. With students who represent over 90 nationalities and span from 3–18 years old, 80 percent of whom are bilingual, IIL brings a new meaning to the term diversity. Beginning as a small French-Catholic school, the school has transformed its curriculum, campus and philosophy to become a thought-leader when it comes to the future of education.

“The traditional lecture-style classroom with a blackboard and the teacher up front leaves little room for creativity. Creativity needs space and mobility such as you might find in a start-up or modern office building,” says Norbert Foerster, General Director of IIL. As a trained child psychologist, Foerster has had a successful tenure promoting this bold vision for IIL. He implemented the school’s English international section, advocated for technology to be woven into IIL’s DNA and pushed for the necessary evolution of the campus to teach 21st-century skills such as creativity.

“We wanted to move away from the traditional classroom set-up,” notes Foerster. When initiating change he and his staff comprehensively researched potential partners. The school realized that to prepare the students of today for the workforce of tomorrow, the classrooms needed to be redesigned.

“That’s where Steelcase came in,” says Adrian Hirst, a robotics and coding teacher at IIL. “The kind of furniture and the design of spaces to which our students now have access to in the Steelcase classrooms are well adapted to the types of task they are asked to carry out, these being independent, student- driven, student-centric challenges.”

These challenges are steered by the school’s desire to mirror life off campus and to encourage students to practice skills like collaboration, critical thinking and digital citizenship, which is hard to do in the traditional learning environment. “In a traditional classroom with traditional furniture, unfortunately, it’s very difficult to break out of the mold of a traditional teaching style,” describes Hirst.

“We’re moving further away from a traditional school setup and into a realistic, collaborative and productive environment where students are working towards goals which are relevant to them in the real world.”

A significant influence at IIL is the permanence of technology. IIL was the first Apple Distinguished School in Switzerland and implemented the first one-to-one iPad program in the country. Each student has their own mobile device and technology is fused into the way lessons are structured. Hirst says integrating technology is vital to IIL’s success because “as a school, we are obviously expected to prepare our students for the real world. If we are not reflecting that, we are left behind. That’s why we made these decisions as regards to furniture and the way the spaces were designed. They allow students to perform in a completely different way.”

The integration of technology at IIL, coupled with a variety of spaces to study, meet and collaborate outside of the classroom, is what makes the entire campus an immersive learning experience.

Students are encouraged to use the diverse mix of spaces and choose a place between classes and during breaks that best suits their needs. Learning is fluid, emulating the real world as Hirst describes.

With mobile devices, mobile furniture and the choice and control students have to explore an ecosystem of spaces, ILL fosters teaching and learning beyond the formal learning environment.

This emphasis on a dynamic and flexible environment is critical to the classrooms’ updated design. The Steelcase Education Node chairs, now used in many IIL classrooms, were a deciding factor for IIL. The chair’s mobility and personal worksurface allow teachers to practice an active learning pedagogy where technology seamlessly blends in. Teachers take on the role of a coach with their students, which is central to IIL’s philosophy towards education, by guiding them towards autonomy and allowing them to manage their devices.

Caroline Duret, a teacher at IIL, describes the Steelcase Education classrooms as the third teacher, a theory that emphasizes the major role space plays in any learning environment.

“Here learners do not turn their backs on each other. They can talk and communicate as they wish. The classroom is also decentralized, the teacher is among the students,” which Duret notes is how she often teaches, sitting side-by-side with her students in a Node chair. Another highlight for Duret is the rhythm of learning that the classroom fosters, which she says keeps students engaged. “This rhythm of learning is very important; students are more active, they get less bored, they get up and move. When I see smiling students who are happy at school, they don’t need to tell me they enjoy learning, their body language speaks for them.”

A clear sign of success that the classrooms are effective is the reaction staff get from students. “Students are completely at ease and have adopted the classroom as their own,” remarks Foerster. Instead of rushing out to leave school, he says that students are specifically asking if they can stay and continue working well after normal school hours. Hirst seconds Foerster, agreeing that students use the classrooms in ways they didn’t predict. “This is a great sign that things have worked and will continue to evolve almost by themselves in a very organic way.”

As early adopters of technology in the education environment, IIL believes it will play a significant role in the future of education, a future where learning is more personalized and teachers coach students to discover and acquire new skills and knowledge for themselves. The future is impossible to predict, but Hirst knows change takes an open mindset and that’s what the school is creating in their own revolution. As he says, “Education needs to change. We’ve been doing our best to follow the evolution of education but has been said many times before; we don’t need an evolution, we need a revolution.”

A LETTER FROM THE ALUMNAE COUNCIL Dear Holy Child Community, Our Alumnae Council has had another successful year! As President of the Council, I would personally like to thank each of the 25 alums we have serving on our Council. Each woman has dedicated her time each month to further the goals of the committees and our Council, and I cannot thank each one enough. Many of these alums have also been a huge help in putting together our list of Class Representatives. Thank you to our current Class Reps who help us on the Council and at Holy Child to disseminate information to our alum community. Our Council is evenly split into three committees: Alumnae Recognition and Outreach, Archives, and Network and Events.

The Alumnae Recognition and Outreach Committee has put together Alumnae Spotlights you may have seen throughout the year. These pieces are writeups carried out by our committee, spearheaded by Committee Head – Liz Palka Minukas ’04, that highlight one alum each month.

These Holy Child alumnae are leaders in diverse fields - business women, doctors, advocates, and athletes. We are so proud to share their stories! So far, we have spotlighted the following alums: Jennie Trocchio ’01, Niya White ’98, Ginger King Shaw ’94, Theresa Gartland ’99, Beth Spencer Collins ’80, and Jessica Dillon Bieligk ’00. The Archives Committee, led by Julia Murphy '08, has been extremely busy. Together they have been sorting through the Holy Child archives – old yearbooks, photos, letters, papers, artwork, and all sorts of treasures – and organizing them for the school. They have used many of their findings for displays throughout the school during different events. Each display has brought smiles and memories back to alumnae, and helped us identify many unmarked photos. The committee is also currently working on a pamphlet detailing the history of the school, as well as the story of Cornelia Connelly. These pamphlets can eventually be used as a mini guide to the history of Holy Child, a great tool for incoming students!

Lastly, our Network and Events Committee has been working hard on finalizing our list of Class Representatives. With the help of the Alumnae Recognition and Outreach Committee, the Network and Events Committee has been able to fill in many gaps that the school has had in their Class Reps list. The Committee now can work with Class Reps to keep alumnae informed about upcoming events and reunions. The biggest event on the calendar is the Alumnae Weekend and Reunion that will be on Holy Child’s campus April 26 - 27, 2019. The Committee’s larger, long-term goal is to provide more opportunities for Holy Child alumnae to network, reconnect and continue to grow together as a community.

These three committees have worked together beautifully, and it has been such an amazing sight to see their goals come to fruition. Thank you for your continuous support of Holy Child!

Santa Project Provides Pajamas to Washington School for Girls Our Santa Project has just wrapped up, and Alisa ’80 and Robin ’86 Marino happily delivered 130 Christmas presents to Washington School for Girls. Many thanks to all who contributed! A special acknowledgement to Connie Coakley Caulfield ’82 who provided gift bags and Caulfield Provisions Hot Sauce to the faculty and staff at WSG. Class of 2018 Share their College Experiences with the Class of 2019 Members of the Class of 2018 returned to Holy Child in January to speak to our seniors and provide insight about their first semester of college. The conversation included their decision to attend a large university vs. a small college, what extracurriculars they are involved in at school, and how well prepared they were academically for the rigors of their college coursework. They emphasized how they were comfortable self-advocating and talking with professors. Our current seniors felt relief about their upcoming college choices after hearing reassurances from the college freshmen that Holy Child prepared them to handle any challenge they may face next fall when they venture off to their new campuses.

Holy Child Alumnae Attend the Gonzaga Business Network Career Fair Alumnae from the classes of 2004-2018 attended this annual event to meet prospective employers and explore internship opportunities.

Hosted at Gonzaga College High School, alumnae from numerous Catholic schools in the DMV had their resumes reviewed, took part in mock interviews and met representatives from over 80 businesses, government agencies and non-profits.

JENNIE TROCCHIO CLASS OF 2001 JENNIE TROCCHIO’S FASCINATION WITH AUTISM and learning approaches began while teaching special education in Miami-Dade County Public Schools. She tells us she immediately saw past the behavior autistic children often exhibit and into the brilliance they have locked inside. After years of schooling, including earning her Ph.D. and starting the first school in Florida that offered the successful DIR/Floortime approach, Jennie is now an expert in the field of autism education.

Jennie, class of 2001, says Holy Child ignited her passion for special education. Her introduction to the experience was volunteering for Best Buddies. To this day, she is close with her “best buddy” Kate, who she still gets together with regularly. Kate was even a bridesmaid in Jennie’s wedding! She credits former Athletic Director Sheila Wooters for encouraging her to try things that pushed her outside her comfort zone, including heading up a soccer program for children with autism while she was a student at Holy Child.

Today, Jennie is working to spread the DIR/Floortime approach to kids, families, and anyone who might benefit from it. This model views each child as an individual and uses a child's strengths to promote development. She is an adjunct professor at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida, and also develops and presents full day, autism-based workshops for other professionals in the field across the country. Most recently, Jennie created ‘Autism Family Field Trips,’ where she gets families together for fun enrichment activities which helps to unite the autism community at the same time.

What is one of your favorite memories of Holy Child?

“On my first day of Holy Child, I remember turning into the driveway, ready to begin the 7th grade, and the entire campus had been toilet papered. I was giddy with the silliness of it all and knew Holy Child was going to be a great experience. My father was less entertained, but it felt like a warm welcome to me. There are many other memories, but this one takes the cake!”

Does one teacher stand out to you during your time at Holy Child?

“The one teacher that really shaped my entire experience at Holy Child was undoubtedly Mrs. Wooters. She was the one who initially suggested the school to my parents and hooked me on the idea of switching to an all-girls school. Year after year she guided me, watched out for me, kept me on my toes and involved in sports. When I wasn’t interested in playing basketball, she made me the mascot (for a few games at least!) When I didn’t make varsity soccer, she made me the captain of the cross-country team and then the track team. More importantly, she didn’t blink an eye when I told her that if I was going to be the captain of the track team, I wanted to try hurdles and the high jump. (She didn’t see it as a problem that I was only 5’2 with no experience.)”

Is there anything about your Holy Child experience that continues to guide you today?

“In my experience, too many schools these days focus only on academics. Don’t get me wrong - academics are important. But, Holy Child taught me that the real magic happens when we aren’t seated at a desk. At Holy Child, we were often given time to come together as a class, grade, or school for fun and meaningful activities (including but not limited to: school wide weekly meetings, making sandwiches together for soup kitchens, retreats, and Spirit Week). These were the experiences that allowed us to apply what we were learning, to connect with others, to figure out who we were, and to come together as a community.

Likely because of these experiences, I am constantly reminding schools I work with that the most important lessons can’t be taught from a textbook or while sitting at a desk, that academics are important but not everything, and emphasize the importance of connection and community.”

What is your biggest piece of advice to a Holy Child student or alumna pursuing her career?

“Find and follow what excites you, what motivates you and what leaves you wanting to know more. Follow that wherever it takes you. Once you have figured out what your passion is, create goals for yourself. Stay focused on what you want to accomplish and work hard to get there. Ignore anyone who doesn’t believe in you and cling tight to those who do. Never stop learning and continue to be curious.

YOU’RE CRUISING THE AISLES AT YOUR LOCAL GROCERY STORE. You come to a halt because you’ve arrived at the refrigerated display with rows of bright colored kombucha bottles. A few years ago, you might not have thought twice about kombucha, the effervescent fermented tea with the funny name chock full of probiotics. Daina Slekys Trout, Class of 1999, co-founded Health-Ade Kombucha in 2012, “with a tiny credit card and a big dream: to brew the best tasting and highest quality kombucha you can buy.” She started brewing kombucha in her apartment with her husband, Justin Trout, and her best friend, Vanessa Dew. Now the Los Angeles-based company has grown to more than 200 employees. The drink is carried in more than 16,000 stores nationwide and is considered to be one of the fastest growing and top performing national brands in the marketplace. Not only that, Daina, who is Health-Ade’s CEO, was named one of Food & Wine Magazine’s 2017 “Most Innovative Women in Food & Drink.”

While Daina has always been passionate about nutrition, health, and real food, something else drove her to start her own business. She says she, Justin, and Vanessa were unfulfilled in their previous career paths.

“We wanted to prove we could run our own business, be our own bosses, make our own rules, and build a company and impact on the country we could be proud of,” Daina says.

But success didn’t happen overnight for Health-Ade. Daina will tell you that launching a business and building a company meant navigating a long road of non-stop hurdles where the buck stops with you. She says the secret to winning depends on how hard you’re willing to work for it.

“You have to believe in yourself, grow and develop 10 times faster than normal, and run faster and harder than everyone else around you,” explains Daina. “All that said, if you’re called to do this, because you just KNOW you need to do this, my advice would be: JUMP IN. The sooner you do, the sooner you win.”

If you’re looking for one more secret to Daina and Health-Ade’s success, look no further than the kombucha bottle itself. Each one says, “Follow your gut!” After all, that’s their tagline for a reason.

What are you most proud of when it comes to your company?

“The thing I’m most proud of is actually my team. I have 200 soldiers that go out every day and give their all for Health-Ade. It’s an incredible feeling to have attracted such superstars. We wouldn’t be where we are without them.”

Where do you see your company going in the future?

“I’d like to see Health-Ade Kombucha as the modern soda, replacing sugary carbonated drinks in every fridge in America. I’d also like to expand into other healthy real food categories. No matter what, we always want to totally win - that’s our whole culture.”

Tell us about your favorite Holy Child memory or class.

“I loved the games, art class, dances, and Spirit Week. So many teachers stand out in my memory. Mr. Woodard I have to thank the most. He made me a better writer. Yes, he was a history teacher, but he was the one who would give me a ‘C’ on a paper because it wasn’t written well enough. I still think of him every time I rewrite a speech to make it that much better."

What is your best piece of advice to a Holy Child student or alumna who is pursuing her career/ dream?

“Just do it, girl! Believing in yourself is the FIRST most important step that needs to be alive throughout the whole journey. You already have what it takes to get started, and you will get everything else you need along the way if you just keep going. FOLLOW YOUR GUT!”

1974 REUNION YEAR Joan Shea Ross (1) is delighted to be a grandmother of twin girls! Colleen Jones Johnson and Jen Ralston Kress ’85 recently had a mini reunion with Sr. Connie Craig and Mary Shields, former Holy Child trustee and teacher.

1977 Shana Gaultney Elliott (2) is a dentist and an associate with the Alpharetta, Georgia dental practice of Stone Stone & Elliott.

1978 The Class of 1978 (3) recently reunited to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their graduation from Holy Child. The day started with a prayer service in Holy Child’s Chapel, then a student-led tour of the school, followed by dinner at the home of Tricia Boland Jones where they Skyped some alumnae out of towners to include them in the festivities.

1979 REUNION YEAR Laura Whalen Aram is pleased to report that her youngest son, Nicholas Perry Aram, is a rising Sophomore at UMBC, studying International Business, Voice and German.

1982 Elise Sluger Ravenscroft, owner of SpotOnEvents, completed the successful coordination of the GBN Career Fair in January, attended by young alumnae from various Catholic high schools in the DC area, including Holy Child.

1985 Pam Burns, owner of PamShops4you, was highlighted in the Washington Post Express in December.

1988 Dr. Janet Foley (4) founded Sonoma County Mobile Veterinary Hospital in 2014, in Occidental, California. It is a full-service hospital on wheels. Juliana Slye (5) is the founder and CEO of Government Business Results, that specializes in government go-to-market strategy and enablement for technology firms.

1992 Christy Weschler Scango (6), with her husband Chris, opened Capitol Hardscapes, custom tailoring outdoor spaces for your home in the DMV area.

1993 Heather Crosby, owner of YumUniverse, was highlighted in the Thanksgiving issue of the O. Oprah Magazine.

1997 Carolyn Scott Giammarinaro (7) welcomed her fourth son, John Scott, born October 19, 2018.

2001 Erica Tokar (10) and her husband Matthew Stone shared the good news about the birth of their daughter Madeline ("Maddie") Mae Tokar Stone on August 1. Maddie's aunt, Tricia Lynch ’11, also attended Holy Child, as did her cousins, Mackenzie Myers ’18 and Catherine Altemus ’16.

2002 Heather Knighton-Brush (11) announced that her family has now grown in size with the birth of her 3rd child on March 30, 2018. Her name is Brianna and she has a 7 year-old brother, Bryson, and a 10 year-old sister, Baylee.

Celine Tobal Bryan is a Project Manager with HNTB, a company that delivers a full range of infrastructure-related services. Celine is participating in Cycle for Survival to honor a relative who died of peritoneal cancer in 2018. Cycle for Survival raises money for rare cancer research where 100% of donations fund research led by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

2004 REUNION YEAR Christine Colburn recently completed her M.A. at the University of Denver with a concentration in humanitarian logistics. She spent the summer interning with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. She is now working at McMurdo Station in Antarctica as an air cargo load planner.

Her husband, Mike Lucibella, has worked with the U.S.

Antarctic Program for nearly four years, so she is thrilled to join him at McMurdo. Devon Dow is Director of Global Strategy for Mailman Group, which is a cuttingedge content strategy and digital marketing company that specializes in sports and tourism.

Alexi Noelle O’Brien-Hosein is a Senior Producer in Washington, DC, for TRT World, an international broadcast company based in Istanbul. Marguerite Bottoroff appeared on Good Morning Washington in January for a food segment.

2008 Teran Huguely is an Account Manager with Amify, an internet marketing company based in Alexandria, Virginia that develops and implements tailored marketing plans. Stephanie Ramdat graduated from UNC School of Law in Chapel Hill, NC, in May, and passed the North Carolina Bar Exam. In November, she accepted a position as an Assistant District Attorney with the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s office in Charlotte, NC. Hillary MacInnes (16) married Scott Galey September 1, 2018. Mary Jeanne Coyle (18) is studying to earn her Family Nurse Practitioner degree at Georgetown. She plans to graduate in May, 2020. Miranda Jacobs (19) married Lenny Taylor December 29. Meagan Glynn attends George Washington University Law School and is on the Law Review. KT Prominski received her doctorate of Physical Therapy at Columbia University in New York, and is a Physical Therapist at Washington Wellness. Anabela Esteves is a medical scribe at Sibley Hospital. She graduated from George Washington University with Pre-Med and Biology majors, and received her Master in Anatomy.

2012 Kaelynn Serena is taking courses at Georgetown University to receive her Certificate in Health & Wellness Coaching. Maggie Farr is a Senior Business Intelligence Analyst for RSA Security, a division of Dell Technologies. Katie Kress is an Insurance Broker at First Financial Group in Bethesda, MD. 2015 Holley Hickman graduated from Ohio Wesleyan this past December with a Bachelor of Arts in Politics and Government and Women’s and Gender Studies. She will be attending law school in the fall. Cece Garner is graduating from College of the Holy Cross with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Education. She is currently applying to graduate school for school counseling.

A Letter from the

Former Chair of the Board of Trustees Dear Friends of Holy Child, As I reflect on the 2017-2018 year and the many accomplishments our community has achieved, I am reminded of how many hands and hearts are committed to our students’ success and Holy Child’s future.

This has been a milestone year with a focus on improving our physical spaces to create innovative, dynamic learning environments that foster collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. With your help, we raised $1.4 million in just 12 months towards phases two and three of the Innovate the Space Campaign.

Additional classrooms were renovated over the summer, thanks to the generosity of our Holy Child community. As the parent of an alumna and a part of the Holy Child community since 1995, I could not be more excited about the future of our school and that of the students.

While the physical environment is important, the learning experience the faculty provide each day is the transformative core of a Holy Child education. The value of a Holy Child education resonates beyond our own community. While our students receive an excellent well-rounded education during their time on campus, we are unceasingly proud that our students take with them the values of learning, action, and faith into the world.

This Annual Report reflects the vision of Dr. Gomez, our Board of Trustees, and the many ways our dedicated and passionate community support Holy Child. Campus maintenance uses 13% of the budget and 16% is used for administration.

2017 – 2018 REVENUE Investments & Auxiliary $519,015 Tuition & Fees: $9,541,920 Fundraising: $1,439,545 Although tuition and fees are the bulk of Holy Child's revenue, donations are also necessary to cover expenses and provide the signature Holy Child experience. Philanthropic gifts made up a critical 13% of revenue in 20172018 and provided the resources to cover the true cost of a Holy Child education.

The Fund was established by Mr. Forry Norton in memory of his daughter, Jan, who died unexpectedly during her sophomore year at Holy Child.

Karen Noonan Fund The Karen Noonan Fund was established to honor the memory of Karen Noonan, a graduate of the Class of 1986. Because of Karen’s desire to become a teacher, gifts endow a fund for faculty education and enrichment.
