LETTER FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL “WE ARE EACH OTHER'S HARVEST; WE ARE EACH OTHER'S BUSINESS; WE ARE EACH OTHER'S MAGNITUDE AND BOND.” - GWENDOLYN BROOKS

At first blush, it might seem that unity is an ironic theme for a magazine issue published in a year that found the world in isolation. After all, it was just a few months ago that students, faculty, and staff hastily scooped up all their laptops, books, files, and potted plants thinking that the arrival of the novel coronavirus would prevent school from returning to session after spring break.

Set up at makeshift workspaces at dining room tables or at desks in their bedrooms, Holy Child students continued with their classes. Holy Child was not closed. Things were just different.

Our amazing faculty pivoted quickly to this new way of teaching, instructing students via Microsoft Teams, while staying mission-centered. Our student body demonstrated amazing resilience, remaining positive and engaged in their work, amidst the disappointment of the cancellation of spring sports, prom, and so many other Holy Child traditions. Our administration worked hand in hand with teachers to iron out kinks and make changes when something wasn’t working as well as it could.

Community is the heart of Holy Child. The isolation of the lockdown was difficult for a school that thrives on interaction, collaboration, and sisterhood. During this time apart, we looked to the stories of Cornelia Connelly’s determination and resolve to guide us through this challenging time. Even in a community like ours, unity is something that we have to work toward and invest in. It’s easier to feel unified when everyone is wearing the same skirt, playing on the same team, and praying in the same chapel. Virtual trivia nights and bingo parties, socially-distant surprise Ring Day celebrations, and musical performances delivered electronically gave us the connections we craved. We found new ways to pray together, celebrate together, and stay connected.

As the summer began, the country was reeling from the senseless murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and Rashard Brooks. The outrage felt across the nation was felt in our community, too. Alumnae reached out to share personal stories and current students rose up in support of Black lives everywhere. A new group, “Tigers for Black Lives,” participated in a caravan - organized by current seniors Jaden Faunteroy and Lola Hill in which dozens of cars traveled together from Bethesda to Potomac, displaying signs with messages of unity. The caravan concluded with a moving gathering on the turf field (you can read Jaden’s speech on page 28). Tahana Augustin, a member of the class of 2016, was instrumental in bringing together alumnae who shared their deeply personal experiences of microaggressions, code switching, and feelings of invisibility. Because of brave alumnae like Tahana Augustin and motivated students who spoke out, Holy Child is listening intently, learning, and committed to being an antiracist institution. I look forward to sharing all the great work our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Steering Committee (consisting of students, parents, alumnae, and faculty) are doing this year in our winter issue.

As I write this, it is the middle of summer, and the pandemic is still raging in many parts of the country.

Like all schools across the U.S., Holy Child is planning the start of our school year, contemplating the many variables and moving targets. In spite of so much uncertainty, I am confident in the unity of the Holy Child family. We will continue to be flexible, creative, and innovative in our instruction whether inperson or virtual. We will continue to find ways to stay connected, create bonds, and make memories.

We will be responsible citizens and respect guidance that will keep our friends and family safe, and pray in unison for the health and welfare of our community. It is because of bonds of our united community that we not only weathered the storm, but discovered strengths we didn’t know we possessed.

I am so honored to be a part of this incredibly special community.

LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR The challenges that this nation has encountered during 2020 have been unparalleled during the last 50 years and like so many different types of entities, have directly impacted the students, teachers, administrators, Trustees, and the families of the Holy Child community. Though the challenges presented

by COVID-19, and the ongoing racial prejudice and discrimination upon which the Black Lives Matter movement has focused our attention, along with various collateral diversity issues, are not easily resolved. It will take time, but it is critical that we recognize that now is the time to stand united as a community to battle for racial equality and to extend our hearts and hands to assist those suffering from COVID-19. Now is also the time to at least start down the path to find resolutions for these issues. The response of how to deal with these matters reflects upon the character and sincerity of any entity that encounters these issues, including the Holy Child community. From what I have witnessed, the Holy Child community, under the leadership of Dr. Gomez, has presented a united, caring, and professional approach to each of these challenges.

I can share with you that the entire Board of Trustees is very concerned about these challenges, and collectively, they have put in much extra time and effort to work with Dr. Gomez in finding the correct path to uncover appropriate procedures and resolutions. Several Trustees have also recognized that these challenges present the Holy Child community with the opportunity to generate new and positive approaches to issues that were not previously at the forefront of our concerns.

COVID-19 presents an ongoing challenge as to how to continue to educate the young women at the school to meet the standards of Cornella Connelly: educating the whole child. Prior to the COVID-19 outbreak, Dr. Gomez had already commenced looking into e-learning classes and how they would function from the teacher and the student perspective. As a result, Holy Child was recognized as having one of the best e-learning systems in the DMV. Parents have come together recognizing the challenges and have been very supportive of the approach put in place by Dr. Gomez. The e-learning program has not been stagnant, but has grown and improved by the faculty and administrators, all of whom will carry forward these new programs as alternative educational tools even after the resolution of COVID-19.

Much of these benefits have been the result of a united Holy Child community, students, families, teachers, and administrators coming together for the good all involved. A very positive product resulting from what was a very challenging situation.

Similarly, the racial prejudice issues highlighted by the Black Lives Matter movement and the various other collateral diversity issues, have resulted in vast protest across the country, staged to seek the Constitutional right of racial equality. Once again, Dr. Gomez took the leadership to commence a dialog regarding the issues as soon as they were raised by a group of Holy Child alumnae who supported the Black Lives Matter movement and brought with her to those discussions the basic Catholic principles upon which the Holy Child community is built. Jesus left us with two basic commandments: love God with your whole heart and soul, and love your neighbor as yourself. The latter commandment so often appears to be the more challenging of the two, but it is a major premise of the Holy Child education and community. Again, from my perspective, the Holy Child community has stood united to adhere to the love your neighbor commandment during these trying times. Loving in a united fashion does not require that all agree on all issues, but does require recognition of basic human rights such as racial equality.

The Holy Child community is a diverse one in terms of race, ethnicity, culture, economic status, and religious identity. Such diversity is a gift to all who participate in the Holy Child community and offers an opportunity to learn and gain a greater respect for each segment of that diverse community. Though love does not require agreement, it does require respect for all people and it is that level of respect that is at the root of the Holy Child education and promoted among the Holy Child community. As a united community, let us join together enthusiastically to support Holy Child in its unique position to identify and lead others down the path to discussions and hopefully resolutions of these issues.

CLASS OF 2020 C E L E B R AT I O N

When the Class of 2020 left campus on March 12th, they had no idea it would be the last day they would roam the halls of Holy Child together.

The onset of a global pandemic left many feeling unmoored. There was so much uncertainty, fear, and grief. As always, our community proved itself to be strong in the face of adversity. We righted ourselves, adapted to this new normal, and found a way to keep the spirit of Holy Child alive while the students worked and studied from their dining room tables.

Throughout April and May, there were days when the administration, parents, and students didn’t think graduation could happen. Yet, by the grace of God, we were able to come together one last time on Holy Child’s beautiful campus.

On Friday, June 26th under a clear blue sky, Holy Child celebrated its Commencement Exercises for the Class of 2020. Cornelia Connelly once said, “Remember that it is not sufficient to have begun well; you must also persevere with courage and finish with resolution.” No one who has ever walked the halls of Holy Child has ever lived up to this message more than the Class of 2020. Their resilience and optimism in the face of adversity demonstrated how prepared they are to take on the next chapter of their lives.

Senior Class President Kenna Brickman’s address to her fellow graduates recounted the joyful memories of four years of high school. Her speech also noted that Holy Child’s motto of Actions Not Words calls us all to take action and “work together to facilitate the change we want to see. Holy Child has shown us the value in each of our voices, so we must share them and speak out against injustice.”

On behalf of the entire Holy Child community, congratulations to the Class of 2020. We are so proud of your accomplishments!

Welcome faculty and staff, family, and friends, Dr. Gomez, Mrs. Jess Dillon Bieligk, Class of 2000. Thank you for joining us to celebrate our years spent here at Holy Child and all that we have accomplished.

While most graduation speeches would discuss the achievements of the graduating class, what makes us unique, and how we will be remembered, this year is different.

This year we have been called to do and be something bigger than ourselves.

What the class of 2020 has experienced is unprecedented. Our time together was cut short by a pandemic. We had little time to grab our things from school and prepare for weeks of shelter in-place. The pandemic upended life as we knew it for us and millions of people throughout the world. While we are all in the same storm, we weren’t all in the same boat. Healthcare workers and grocery store employees became essential workers. We adapted to online learning, cared for each other virtually, and assisted the underserved members of our community. The recent deaths of Ahmaud Arbury, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Rayshard Brookes and countless others have shed light on the police brutality and racism that has terrorized black communities for hundreds of years. We have grappled with the tough reality that life for our Black sisters and brothers is disproportionately harder in every facet of their life, even their experiences at Holy Child. In a time of fear, sadness and despair, the Holy Child community and the class of 2020 has demonstrated incredible resilience and strength. I’m very proud and honored to represent my class and speak to you today.

Reflecting on a simpler time, earlier this year I had some moments of senioritis: I slept through some alarms arrived late to

school a few times. Finally, I received an email with the subject line: Detention. That day, we were tasked with sorting pictures of alumni, looking at the dates on the photos and sorting them by grade. I studied every photo, trying to figure out where, why, and when it was taken. I loved seeing the Holy Child history, values, and spirit through these pictures, despite not understanding the context of the images. I began to consider how our class’s time here at Holy Child will be both seen and understood.

Suppose in 50 or 100 years from now, a grandchild, stranger, or even future Holy Child student, discovers the cherished pictures and videos from our four years here. What will they see? What will they learn about us, our time here, and what we have accomplished?

They might see pictures of us in sleeping bags throughout the school during our freshman retreat, or videos of everyone driving around together the night before the first day of school. A highlight could be the AP Statistics class playing basketball in the gym, competing against Mr. Rosenberg.

Pictures from Kairos would show only a glimpse of the class, united as one through prayer and reflection. Maybe they would see Mr. Hatton and his class dressed up as the characters of Pride and Prejudice, or us on the sophomore retreat chasing chickens around the farms of Calleva. The videos of dance parties in the Commons during senior lunches or the slounge with our entire student body would only be a snapshot of the joy we felt on campus prior to the pandemic. These are just a few of our most treasured memories.

Holy Child has provided us with shared experiences and a space to grow into the women we are today. We have created irreplaceable friendships and found mentors

in our teachers, faculty, and staff. We have been taught to engage in challenging discussions and listen to what each other has to say. Over the last few weeks our community and each of us individually has been called on to step up in the Black Lives Matter movement, and truly demonstrate what Holy Child has taught us, Actions Not Words. I am so proud of my classmates and fellow alumni who organize, protest, and work to make our community more inclusive and actively anti-racist.

As we leave here today, we must build on what we have learned at Holy Child and create a future that draws others into community. We need to remember to continue to take action. To listen to the Black voices in our communities, educate ourselves on the ways we perpetuate systemic racism, and work together to facilitate the change we want to see. Holy Child has shown us the value in each of our voices, so we must share them and speak out against injustice.

What a person of the future would surely recognize from photos and videos of this time in our lives is our perseverance. Our class adapted to the “new normal” sustained by a deep love for each other, our school, and our community. We have demonstrated an unwavering spirit. I am confident that this spirit will be evident to the future observers, and will transcend visual imagery. I believe that the 49 of us will continue to evolve and persevere in our everchanging world. We are resilient. We are women of faith. We are women of action. Thank you.

2020 GRADUATION GUEST SPEAKER Holy Child friend introduced me to my husband.

Needless to say, the Holy Child spirit and community has been a critical input to where I am today.

In the spirit of our alliteratively named founder, Cornelia Connelly, I’m going to share three C-words that I think best embody the Holy Child experience. Celebrate, Curiosity, and Courage.

Hopefully you can channel these words and the meanings behind them forward as you embark on this next step of your journey, keeping these elements of Holy Child always with you. With that in mind...

Hello everyone! First of all, I’m so happy to be IN PERSON with other humans who aren’t related to me.

Congratulations to the parents and loved ones out there. You’ve certainly played a big role in giving these young women all you have to date, most especially making it possible for them to have the foundation of a Holy Child experience.

Class of 2020 - in attempt to get to know you a little better, I surveyed your teachers and loved some of the words they used to describe this class - words like strong, kind, empathetic, undeterred, spirited, and bold.

While I’m sure it’s disappointing that some of them can’t be here, please know their thoughts and input have been woven into my remarks.

Even at the surface level, one Holy Child friend introduced me to the founder of the company I’m now helping to build. Another

This word certainly defines a big part of what I remember of my Holy Child experience and, based on some videos I’ve seen of this class, that has been consistent for you. By celebrate, I certainly mean the rituals of Ring Day, Spirit Week, and Holly Ball that yield smiles and memories. More importantly, I think about celebrate in terms of how Holy Child celebrates every girl who chooses to spend her high school experience here. Holy Child celebrates who you are as an individual, does not expect - in fact, actively fights against - you conforming to any particular mold. In living up to the words of Cornelia Connelly: “Be yourself and make that self all that God wants it to be” The Holy Child experience I remember was one that, through that celebration of me, helped me discover depths of my potential and interests that I would have never previously imagined. For me, that meant being able to be an academic, an athlete, and an actress, but also discovering - and being okay with the fact that I wasn’t that into art and, as fascinating as the realities of chemistry were, sitting in a lab wasn’t my thing.

In this class, I’ve heard stories of your academic and athletic feats, your scientific research, your global travel for service, and your spirited embrace of both authorized Holy Child traditions like Spirit Week but also the unauthorized traditions of a messy senior lounge and maybe some questionable driving skills.

One of your classmates shared with me about how every single person in your class has a

role, that everyone mattered to make your class what it is. I challenge you to channel this sentiment forward into your life ahead - see and be the best version of yourself and celebrate and elevate others to reach their own potential and acknowledge the important role every human plays in making our big world so great.

Okay, so word one - CELEBRATE. C U R IO S ITY I watched a video of your yearbook editors describe the theme of the book - Reading Between the Lines - and was struck at how profound that was and how perfect it is for the time we’re living in. I loved this call to action to be curious, to not take information or people at surface value - dig deeper, get to know others beyond their exterior and think critically about what you see in a headline or read in a book.

As you move to this next phase of your life, embrace your curiosity to push conventional thinking but to also indulge yourself. Steve Jobs always talked about how if you find something you love, it will never feel like work. I like to think that if you love being curious and love learning new things, any new challenge you take on can become something you love.

Okay, so CELEBRATE, CURIOSITY. C O U RA GE While you’re set up with the right foundation, that doesn’t mean it will be easy. Sometimes, it will be really, really hard. You are all smart, super talented young women and, as a result, will have the great problem of being presented with lots of different opportunities and experiences and sometimes you’ll need to make trade-offs.

A year ago, I left a very safe career at an established company because I wanted take on something more entrepreneurial while having more flexibility to be with my children and to engage in my community. Flash forward a year and I’m now helping to build a company with a mission I believe in, while also wanting to be the best mom, wife, daughter, and friend.

It’s fun and it’s 100% more aligned to what I had decided I wanted, but it’s also scary, really exhausting, and hard because there are days when I feel like I’m crushing my job but failing as a parent and friend and days when the inverse is true.

That said, my ability to draw back to the courage I gained at Holy Child - the reminder that I can do hard things, that hard times will pass, that I will make mistakes but can bounce

back - always bring me back to the belief I have in myself that powers me through whatever obstacles present.

I’ve heard you all sometimes give the administration a hard time about the Believe slogan. That is no joke - Holy Child believes in you and in your time here, whether you realize it or not, has helped you learn to deeply believe in yourself so that you’ll have the courage to take a risk, to try new things, to make mistakes, to adapt, and to chart your own course for a fulfilling life ahead.

Okay, so we covered the C’s - Celebrate, Curiosity, and Courage. Those are all incredible capabilities that will serve you well in your life ahead. Now, one for extra credit - a D-word: DO. Our girl Cornelia said it best - Actions Not Words. If you all can channel this into your life, you will always differentiate. I remember this being drilled in almost every aspect of my Holy Child experience - certainly through acts of service, but even in academic subjects like writing. In fact, I have a vivid memory of being in the Writing Center working on how I needed to “show, not tell” in my writing.

You will encounter lots of people who will tell you how important they are or talk about all the things they’re going to do. That’s great, but always remember to channel what you’ve learned at Holy Child and be a woman of action.

Walk the walk and show the world what you’re capable of. Don’t sit on the sidelines, get in the game, create the game, change the game.

You have the tools to do it so put them to good use. And, remember, you have a community of people behind you, celebrating you, and cheering you on. Most especially me!

EIGHTH GRADE PROMOTION Although we couldn’t celebrate the accomplishments of our 29 wonderful 8th grade students in person, we were extremely proud to promote them to our upper school through a virtual ceremony.

Our 8th grade students used their time in Holy Child’s middle school to grow, learn from mistakes, make great strides, and evolve into more strong, confident young women, ready to take on the challenges of high school. It has been an honor to watch our students’ journey so far. Their future is bright and we look forward to seeing where it takes them!

Good Evening, my name is Avery Johns and I am the Middle School Student Council President.

Last year my class selected the verse, Luke 1:37, “For nothing is impossible without God.” To reflect upon this quote, I listened to several motivational speeches, I listened to those who looked the impossible in the eye and beat it. As we face the pandemic and as my generation takes a deeper look at racial inequality in America, I wondered... Will I beat this? Will my generation overcome? Will we make the change? I sat there for a moment, sulking in victimhood letting my scars open, until a fragile voice whispered in my ear “Yes.” I recognized, I was put on this earth for a reason, my generation will be the voices of those who feel voiceless. I was gifted with free will by my creator, yet God always makes the grace in my mind louder than the obstacles before me. I believe the fire to fight inside me, inside us, is greater than any hellfire before us. Every human built by God was made to adhere and adapt to the anguish before us. We were built to beat adversity. I’ve realized a lot of people don’t recognize that, a lot of people let the feeling of powerlessness over power the potential of true greatness. I realize a lot of people are not privileged enough to be born and cultivated into atmospheres that create strong minded women.

I truly disbelieve many people my age have this knowledge of spirituality, I doubt many have had the privilege to be educated in an environment that creates this kind of knowledge. Holy Child has truly been monumental to mine and many other girls spiritual awakening. They say greatness is measured in those around you. Once you become a Holy Child girl, you develop the Holy Child mindset, eventually all obstacles that dare to face you run away and hide. I believe Holy Child breeds this kind of courageousness. God gifted us with free will and the staff gifted us with the knowledge of how to live it just right. I believe that’s' why we’ve been exceeding during this time of anguish.

Holy Child girls throughout this time have treated each other like we are – sisters. A lot of us thought quarantine would be much different, that we might drift apart. Would our days at the camp site laughing to pieces ever be the same? Would we still make stupid little jokes in class?

Would we still have hysterical moments in homeroom like we used to? Would we still feel the fullness our physical atmosphere planted in us? Well, in layman's terms, yes. Through cheeky smiles, a myriad of squeaky laughs combining in just the wrong way, and accidentally leaving our microphones on at rigorous academic moments, I've learned that graceless moments created a paradox in just the best way. Our connection is too strong to have any physical limitations. I truly believe if we were worlds away we could never forget the look on Ms. Davis’ face when I carried Jessie through the obstacle course. Or that time Ms. Pablo’s homeroom dressed as the Grey's Anatomy cast in Spirit Week. And one person had to wear BRIGHT yellow scrubs amongst the six other blue. The point is, wherever we go, we’ll always remember the fullness of our hearts at Holy Child; the love will never die.

With the end of this middle school experience, I know we will miss all of these things, but in the eyes of adversity our love always wins. The power of our hope and love exceeds the impossible.

Holy Child taught me to believe, I believe glory relies on one's mindset. Those who are great know they are great and excellence will begin to drop out of their pores like the sun rises. Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate, our fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. For my sisters, don’t change for anyone, recognize your potential and become it, be a Holy Child girl no matter where you go.

ATHLETIC AWARDS It was another successful year for our teams. Six of our student-athletes were selected to the All-ISL team and two AllMAGHL for Ice Hockey. We have seven talented athletes who will be continuing their respective sport at the collegiate level.

It was certainly a challenging and atypical year for us, but many memories and highlights were made. Our Varsity Ice Hockey team made it to the championship of their division, falling just short. Cross Country continues to grow and was able to place in all meets. Our Swim team broke five school records this season. Varsity Field Hockey had one of the best seasons yet – with 3 players earning All-ISL. Tennis continued to improve and added a freshman to the All-ISL team. Varsity Volleyball earned their first home playoff game in many years. Junior Varsity Basketball had a huge home win over Stone Ridge in a packed gym, showing our school pride.

Our middle school teams worked hard all season with our Soccer team winning the Norwood tournament, our Field Hockey team added many new players who made an immediate impact on the field, our A Basketball team finished 8-1 and our B Basketball team continued to get better each game while building team chemistry.

We would like to thank all our studentathletes, managers, coaches, and parents.

We could never have predicted the year we would have. We are extremely humbled and proud to be part of such a supportive, loyal, and resilient community.

CAMPUS NEWS

Our community joined together for a beautiful Epiphany Mass. After Mass, students from the Foundations of Ministry class performed the living Nativity Tableau.

Holy Child hosted a Diversity Day with the theme of “Promoting Healthy Conversations Around Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.� Students and faculty held workshops about various topics. We welcomed guest speaker Kaliq Simms, founder of the Higher Learning Group, to help kick off the day. Learn more using the code to the left!

This year marks the inaugural year of the Cornelian Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society with our first eleven members, who were inducted during a beautiful ceremony in the Chapel in February.

Donors joined our students and faculty for a special blessing and dedication of our new Hanley Turf Field. Thank you to all who helped make it happen!

Students took us to Sweet Apple, Ohio for three special performances (with an additional sensory friendly show!) of Bye Bye Birdie on Holy Child’s stage! See this year’s Cappies review using the QR code on the left.

This year at our annual Blood Drive hosted by NHS and Inova, students, faculty, and parents collectively donated 34 units of blood, potentially saving 102 patients with 3 lives per unit.

This January, a group of juniors and seniors were inducted into the National Honor Society.

The senior NHS members shared the values of the Society and helped to induct members in a private ceremony in the chapel.

Students joined their dads and special guests on campus for Mass and breakfast. The morning was a great way for students and their special guests to spend some quality bonding time and reflect on their relationship with Christ.

Holy Child’s Girl Up Club hosted a SoulCycle charity ride to raise money for the Girl Up program that is an initiative that encourages girls to stand up for, support, and empower other girls across the world. This organization is helping the hardest-to-reach girls living in places where it is hardest to be a girl by changing policies and raising funds to improve their lives.

Holy Child students showed their class pride during Spirit Week festivities. This year, the students participated in Movie/TV Day, USA Day, Group Day, and Color Day. The seniors came out on top in first place!

Our community celebrated Black History Month with many celebrations including a special dance performance by junior Elyse Miller, famous Black and African American homeroom door competitions, and presentations hosted by students and faculty on various topics on contributions of the Black community in pop culture. Presentations included topics such as sports, cultural appropriation, hair, fashion, music, Black Christians, movies, and media. Artwork by Aurora Chen ’21

Our Girl Up Club hosted a special Women’s History Month presentation by asking their peers who their girl hero is and why.

Parents celebrated the Holy Child spirit by sporting their daughter’s class color at this year’s Gala, which was thoughtfully planned out and run by the Gala Co-Chairs and two Holy Child parents, Maria Covell (Kiki ’20, Caroline ’23) and Meghan O’Boyle (Maggie ’23).

Art III students created unconventional dresses based on song choices of Holy Child seniors.

Students worked in teams to research, design, and create the dresses through a process similar to a fashion designer.

Members of our community donated over 12 feet of hair to the Children with Hair Loss organization that gives hair to children and young adults facing medically-related hair loss.

Our seniors had some time off-campus as part of the Senior Retreat to reflect on their years at Holy Child.

Students participated in the student exchange program with the Holy Child School in Killiney, Ireland.

Students and faculty adjusted to a new way of learning due to COVID-19. Each member of our community rose to the occasion when completing the 2019-20 school year virtually from late March through the last day of school in May. Our annual Actions Not Words Day were split into two days to highlight the many ways our community gives back.

On our first day on April 21, we recognized members of our community and their work during this time. Staff and students interviewed alumnae and other students about their respective work during the pandemic.

Dear Holy Child Community,

June 2, 2020

The difficulties of the past months have strained and burdened all of us, especially, those members of our communities who have had the virus themselves or within their families and those who grieve the loss of a loved one. We support and pray for each of our Holy Child families.

These last days since the unconscionable death of George Floyd have opened a societal wound that has besieged our country since its beginnings. The societal, legal, economical, medical, and educational inequities suffered by our communities of color are very real and harmful to black and brown people, but in the end to all Americans who desire a country built on justice, equality, compassion, and wise leadership.

We certainly look on with horror at the looting, fires, and violence on our city streets across the nation. But we must also look with open minds and hearts at the anger, fear, and pleas of the peaceful protesters. With them let us hope and pray and act (Actions not Words} to move down a road of honest dialogue and social/political change.

Let this be the time we condemn the violence, but hear the outrage and injustice.

Let this be the time that racism and discrimination are held up to God’s healing grace and we move forward in actions for the common good of all our Americans.

May calm and peace come with truth and justice.

On June 15th, students Jaden Faunteroy ’21 and Lola Hill ’21 along with other members of our student Diversity Committee, organized a special caravan protest for the Holy Child community to participate in. With over 100 participants from alumnae, current students, faculty, staff, and parents – it was a beautiful protest starting at Bethesda Elementary to Holy Child’s campus.

CARAVAN PROTEST SPEECH B y J aden F auntero y ‘21 For over four hundred years, we (Black men and women) have been fighting for our freedom and for our rights, but we are not done yet. We will not rest until justice is served, and we are truly free. We will not stop fighting until we are judged by the content of our character, not the color of our skin.

Our ancestors have instilled within us an unmatched resilience and strength that cannot be tamed. We will continue to protest and speak out until they feel us, until they can understand and recognize the pain in our voices, the pain in our eyes, and the pain that weighs heavily on our hearts.

As we, people of every race and culture, stand 10 feet apart yet still in solidarity, I realize that we must find a way to come together in order to change the world around us.

We are tired. Every single one of us is tired, but we have to keep pushing. Each generation has fought their own battles. This is our fight now, and we mustn’t succumb to the daily fear of standing up and speaking out because Black lives depend on us.

Whether you are protesting or simply challenging the racist comments and people that sit at the very same dinner table, do not be silent. If you choose to be neutral in times of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. You are either with us, or you are against us.

To my fellow high schoolers, we have to step up. Soon we will be the politicians, lawyers, police officers, doctors, and businesspeople of this world and country.

We must be the change we want to see. Hold each other accountable, have those difficult conversations, stand up against injustice, especially in times of discomfort. Sign petitions, pick up the phone, and check up on your Black friends and family. You are not alone in this fight.

We will continue to say their names. We will be heard!

Justice will be served, and BLACK lives do MATTER! Rest in everlasting peace, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and sadly, many others.

BEING BLACK AND CATHOLIC “If I love you, I have to make you conscious of the things you do not see.”

- James Baldwin My very existence lies at the intersection of being Black and Catholic. An intersection that means my heart skips at the sight of an officer while on my way to Mass, or I experience racism right before teaching catechism to middle school students. In this intersection of faith and race, the burdens I carry and offer up to the cross are also related to the color of my skin.

In recent months, I have been through a roller coaster of emotions. I have experienced fear, despair, anger, hope, doubt...deep doubt and joy. With each news story, each life lost turned into a hashtag, or picture of a woman that could very well be me now a troubling statistic, my emotions grew deeper. It was in that longing that I realized that I do not have Black Catholic peers in my immediate circle. My Catholic circle was more homogeneous than I would like.

This revelation shook me. I needed the safety and commonality of others whose existence also laid at the intersection of Black and Catholic.

The many years bearing witness to countless Black men and women lost disproportionately at the hands of those who are sworn to protect, seeing devastating statistics of Black female

mortality rates after childbirth, or watching the number of Black individuals who identify as Catholic dwindle over the years were beginning to add up.

What does it mean to be Black and Catholic?

For me, there is strength and power in embracing both identities. To be Black and Catholic means to add to the rich tapestry of the Catholic faith. In my praise there is an echo of my Nigerian ancestry, in my worship there is a depth that has roots in emotion and honor, and in my oration is the whisper of stories told and untold. To be Black and Catholic is to join the richness of my experiences and being with the graces of the sacraments.

Sister Thea Bowman, Servant of God, answers it best in this quote.

“What does it mean to be Black and Catholic?

It means that I come to my church fully functioning. That doesn’t frighten you, does it?

I come to my church fully functioning...I bring my whole history, my tradition, my experience, my culture, my African American song, and dance and gesture and movement and teaching and preaching and healing and responsibility as a gift to the church.”

Now, what if that sting came from the church she so loves? There was a time when we were not allowed to even take part in Catholic rituals and sacraments. Serving at the altar or receiving Communion was was either segregated or not allowed. Times when the leaders of the church were on the wrong side of justice when it came to race. Or more recently,

if you bring up current topics that affect Black Catholics uniquely the issue is brushed away, or worse, ignored?

In my Black Catholic experience on any given day, I am on the receiving end of countless microaggressions which pick apart my humanity.

I am always keenly aware that for many people their experience with me will be one of few they might have with a Black person, and I hold a responsibility to represent not only myself, but my Blackness well. That juggle of self chips away at a person’s sense of self. My desire to be more palatable took away the richness in flavor of who God made me to be. My Black experience must include the whole of me.

It is not enough to be a diverse church if members of that church do not feel welcome to be and bring all that they are. Their burdens, their traditions, their voices, all in gift to the church, all woven into the body of the church.

In faith, there may be moments where we lose hope, but by faith, we know that that hope will come again. That flame is never truly extinguished.

The beauty of connecting with true allies towards justice and new Black friends of faith quenched the desert in my soul.

Allies who have truly listened and relieved burdens by educating their fellow non-Black Catholics, new Black friends who share similar experiences, emotions, and desires for their church.

"THE DEVIL DOES NOT NEED AN ADVOCATE; I AND COUNTLESS OTHER BLACK CATHOLICS DO."

Unfortunately as of late, I have found little solace in sharing my experiences with my non-Black Catholic brothers and sisters. I am met with “what abouts” and “the past is the past” or “perhaps…”'. I have never encountered so many ‘devil's advocates’ as I have recently with people of faith. The devil does not need an advocate; I and countless other Black Catholics do. I have reached out in conversations to be a bridge-builder, but as author Austin Channing Brown states, “The role of a bridge-builder sounds appealing until it becomes clear how often that bridge is your broken back.” Having to share personal trauma in order to validate my anger or sadness about the fact that black lives once again are not seen to matter is back breaking work. I tell you at that intersection of race and faith stands a Black woman disappointed and weary. Disappointed but hopeful, weary but persistent.

In the Sacrament of Reconciliation, we start in prayer and in an examination of conscience.

As individuals who make up the body of the church, we must examine our conscience as it relates to social justice. This includes telling the full story of the role the Catholic Church played in it. As Shannen Dee Williams writes for the National Catholic Reporter, “The historical record is inundated with gut-wrenching examples of Black Catholic faithfulness in the

We must encourage each other and our parishes to continually engage in discussions on issues that deeply harm and affect communities of color. Issues that are not easy to talk about.

Issues like police brutality, mass incarceration, inequity in leadership in our parishes and dioceses, or personal biases. Including Black Catholic history, Saints and stories into main Catholic education will help create a more diverse and rich story of the Catholic experience and provide a narrative of faith that allows for better representation. Invest in saving AfricanAmerican churches and audit leadership to include positions that focus on inclusion across various races and backgrounds. Solidarity must be built by celebrating the richness of cultures Black Catholics bring to their faith along with highlighting those experiences.

DISRUPTIVE INNOVATION; CHANGING THE WAY WE APPROACH EDUCATION Education is an ever-changing landscape.

Educators often say that if you wait long enough the new educational practices or pedagogies that are popular now will come back. In many cases, they are right. Schools educate in a manner they believe works. If students do well on tests and go to good colleges then we are doing well. We, as educators, develop our programs based on research, brain science, and educational leaders who identify the best practices for teaching and learning. So how does educational change happen in a way that the pendulum moves forward and doesn’t swing back?

Simple…Disruptive Innovation. A transformation that results from a new development that dramatically changes our structure and how we function as a school. Some examples of disruptive innovations that forever changed the way we work, learn, and play are the computer, the internet, portable devices, and cell phones.

What is another type of disruption? A pandemic.

It's not the type of disruption that you would see coming or would slowly adapt to or read books about. It’s the type of disruption that pushes you forward, forces you to think creatively, and collaborate on solutions that meet the needs of the current situation. Last spring, the COVID-19 pandemic thrust our school into a virtual setting with little notice.

Although disruptive, it was a managed shift in the delivery of our high-quality educational program. We relied on the foundation of our 1:1 device program and the technology integration tools that have become key to the teaching andlearning at Holy Child.

This foundation gave us the springboard to better deliver learning at a macro level - big ideas - to the micro level – the skills needed to 32 support it.

Disruptive innovation in a classroom is student-centered and personalized through intentional implementation of technology.

This shifts teaching and learning from a traditional, lecture style to an innovative and collaborative learning environment. Learning changes from something that can only happen in a classroom to something that is integrated into all aspects of our world. Think about the accessibility we now have by using webcams and Microsoft Teams. Our students will not only just learn in our classrooms, but they can learn from other places beyond our campus walls. Teachers can invite scientists, innovators, government leaders, and philanthropists to discuss ways to improve our world through collaborative discussions and authentic learning opportunities.

Through OneNote, teachers and students can collaborate and share feedback dynamically.

Other educational technology applications such as Flipgrid and Nearpod increase student engagement by allowing students voice and choice in how they express their understanding, ideas, and reflections. Teachers utilize the benefits of these tools to help them see and know every one of their students — see how they learn and who they are as individuals.

Thrively is a program that inventories students' strength, learning style, and interests to help us better understand how our students learn, help them grow, and guide their future aspirations.

Using innovative technology to know the uniqueness of each student and challenge them to grow into who they are called to be is a perfect example of how Cornelia called us to fulfill her mission by “meeting the wants of the age.”

To meet the wants of the age is to challenge what we believe about learning, collaborate with diverse people to come to new ideas, and experiment and connect insights to change the way we teach and learn. It is safe to say our world is changing and will continue to change, but it is through this unexpected disruption that lasting innovation occurs. This will change teaching and learning in ways we never expected, but will prepare our young women to be woman of action, ingenuity, and innovation.

MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE Holy Child’s 8th grade science class with Olivia Hogan utilized Microsoft Teams to interview Katherine Weiss, a wildlife ecologist who specializes in urbanization's impact on mammal communities, species interactions, and human-wildlife conflict. The students asked her about her research on the effects of urbanization on mammal communities (specifically coyotes) in Phoenix and LA; about invasive species and their impact on ecosystems for their projects; and also about women in STEM and pursuing a career in the science field.

Katherine said of the 8th grade students, they were “a great group of engaged, respectful, and kind students who asked great questions!”

UPPER SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION Holy Child Athletic Trainer Cara Lewis-Roy, M.Ed., ATC, LAT, CSCS taught her 9th grade physical education class on Microsoft Teams. Scan the QR code to see freshman students in their PE class doing circuit training with Ms. Lewis-Roy.

MIDDLE SCHOOL ENGLISH In 8th grade English, students used the theme of “Finding Your Path” to focus on analyzing the purpose of the authors they are reading. They studied a condensed version of the fictional novel “Bronx Masquerade” by Nikki Grimmes. While reading this selection, the focus was on structure analysis and characterization. Students worked on recognizing character development through both direct and indirect clues. They demonstrated their understanding of the text by highlighting their analysis in an oral response of the selection through the video application of Flipgrid. Students demonstrated their creativity and understanding of poetic form through the writing and recitation of their own identity poem. Scan the QR code to see more.

CELEBRATING MS. K

For the past 17 years, Ellen Kumm has been the face of Connelly School of the Holy Child. She greets every visitor, whether a student, parent, vendor, or client, with a warm smile and cheerful demeanor. Ms. K – as she is affectionately known – is always willing to help, whether that is helping direct visitors or assisting faculty and staff with projects big and small. She has been known to leave sweet notes in her co-workers mailboxes, put surprise gifts on desks, and lend support when someone is having a bad day. Ms. K is first in line to dress up for Spirit Week and festoon the front desk with colorful decorations for every holiday.

As much as Ms. K is loved by her co-workers, she is adored

by Holy Child students. Ms. K has been a constant in all of their lives, always at her post to offer a band aid for a paper cut, lend occasional index cards, and provide encouraging words when a student is struggling. Her motherly nature, openness, and radiating kindness has made her a treasure in our community.

ALUMNAE COUNCIL P R E S I D E N T L E TT E R Dear Holy Child Alumnae, As I start to write this letter, I realize how much I need to thank our alumnae community. So, as you read this, please consider this a thank you letter more than an update, and accept my deepest gratitude for so many of you who have shown support to the school and the rest of our alum network these past several months. When you saw my last letter in winter 2020, we had hopes for an exciting and promising year ahead. Little did we know that a global pandemic was brewing, about to throw everything off course.

In March, Holy Child moved to e-learning and all in-person activities were cancelled for the foreseeable future. We had to postpone our Alumnae Weekend to next spring 2021. But the school got creative! Holy Child had several online events – like our BINGO game nights, that have been met with lots of excitement. In a time when life outside our homes has been scary and uncertain, it is important to keep up a sense of normalcy through virtual happenings. I know many reading this have been directly affected by COVID-19. I want to give a huge thank you to all our Holy Child alumnae first responders and essential workers – doctors, nurses, physician assistants, medical care givers, hospital workers, and so many others. I am so proud of the work our alums are doing, especially now. We have so many alumnae who are teachers who have had a tremendously difficult job teaching during this pandemic. Thank you! It has been beautiful to see so many alumnae encouraging their fellow classmates.

As we moved into summer 2020, our alums came together again in support of Black Lives Matter.

An entire movement for racial and social equality was started at Holy Child by fellow alumna Tahana Augustin '16. I want to thank each and every alum who spoke up and shared their personal experiences with the Holy Child community. Thank you for your bravery, for sharing your truth, and for using your voice to make a difference. While there is still so much work to be done to create lasting change at Holy Child, it has been incredibly inspiring to see so many alums step up and actively work with the school. The Alumnae Council has formed a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee which will have members who are a larger part of the Holy Child Community Diversity Steering Committee. Please be on the lookout for future events and ways to support in the coming months. We are very excited and have been brainstorming better ways to connect with ALL our alums.

When we started the Alumnae Council a few years back, our goal was to create a greater Holy Child alumnae network. In order to make it the best it can be, we need to show Christlike love and support to every student who has walked through Holy Child’s doors. I am a huge believer in learning from others’ experiences and I know we can learn so much from our BIPOC and LGBTQIA alums. I am hopeful that going forward we can have many alums come back and share their experiences with other alums and current students so that no one feels alone. I hope you all will work with me and the rest of our alumae community to make our network great.

Currently, she works as a policy researcher within UVA’s Biocomplexity Institute. She has authored an open-source software package and enjoys her role as a community organizer and mentor in the data science community.

She seeks to amplify voices and stories from minority communities and advance meaningful policy to effect equity and inclusion at Holy Child.

MIA SIMMS '08 is currently working as a Vehicle Operations Analyst and Auditor at Volkswagen Group of America. When not enjoying the great outdoors and curating her lifestyle blog, she cherishes spending time with friends, family and the warm furry friends she volunteers with at Montgomery County Humane Society, a local animal shelter.

ASHLEY WILLIAMS DUNN '08 is a veteran English educator and Diversity and Equity advocate. She is currently an English Content Specialist overseeing the secondary English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum for Montgomery County Public Schools. Ashley is an experienced classroom teacher and school leader. She has degrees from Dickinson College (B.A.), Notre Dame of Maryland University (M.A.), and McDaniel College (PBACC). Recently, she was a keynote speaker for the Dickinson College Education Department, and a professor intern in the Excellence in Equity graduate program through McDaniel College. She looks forward to engaging the Holy Child community in this important work.

SISTER CONNIE CRAIG

A 60TH JUBILEE CELEBRATION

As a member of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus since 1959, Sr. Connie Craig shared her joyful energy and selfless dedication to teaching generations of students at Holy Child Potomac. One of the school’s earliest teachers and still one of its greatest supporters, few members of the Holy Child community embody Cornelia Connelly’s call to live through “Actions Not Words” like Sr. Connie. Current and former faculty and staff, parents, students, alumnae, and friends gathered on a chilly morning in January to celebrate together.

A record number – more than 400 people - packed the gym for the Feast of the Epiphany Mass on Sunday, January 5, 2020. The celebration began with a Mass of the Epiphany and commemorate Sr. Connie’s 60th Jubilee. Twelve fellow Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus attended, not only to show support to their fellow “sister,” but to renew their vows with Sr. Connie as all Holy Child nuns do around the world at the Feast of the Epiphany Mass.

After Mass, guests gathered in the newly renovated Connelly Commons to enjoy brunch and a special surprise announcement. After months of meetings and collaboration, the Sister Connie Craig Celebration Committee led by Beverly Billingsley, announced not only did Holy Child endow a scholarship in Connie Craig’s name; the school will also be naming the Chapel for Sr. Connie as a sign of our gratefulness to her, for all she has given back to Holy Child over the years. The Sister Connie Craig Celebration Committee which included former faculty and staff, and alumnae collaborated to show the Holy Child community that we have a a very special nun, who began at Holy Child in 1964 and, for all but a few years, spent the bulk of her life educating, encouraging students and following the educational vision of Cornelia Connelly.

Throughout her tenure as a nun and teacher, Sr. Connie always believed in creating access for young women of all backgrounds to receive a Holy Child education. Her dedication to opening doors for deserving students will live on in perpetuity through the endowed scholarship established in her name. When you include the Sr. Connie Craig Endowment Fund in your charitable plans, you will help produce scholarship funds for young women who otherwise could not afford full tuition.

To fully honor Sr. Connie’s legacy as a pillar of our community, Holy Child’s goal is to grow this fund from its current $150,000 level to $1 million so that an annual grant may be made to a freshman in the amount of $40,000 ($10,000 each of her four years). WOMEN & INVESTING ALUMNAE PANEL REFLECTION The Alumnae Council hosted its first educational panel in January in Bethesda, MD on Women and Investing. The discussion featured three panelists: Giselle Cruz Colavita ’96, Sarah Novak Nesbitt ’00, and Jaci Appel ’00 from different industries including financial planning & investment, family law, and real estate. Liz Palka Minukas ’04, did an excellent job posing questions to initiate an engaging discussion.

IMPORTANT TAKEAWAYS FROM THE PANEL: 1) INVESTMENT & FINANCIAL PLANNING

a. Let your money work as hard for you, as you work for it.

b. Investing doesn’t need to be complicated and there’s no better time than now to have a blended portfolio.

c. If you’re interested in getting started in investing your money, look for a firm like Charles Schwab who employs salary-based financial advisors.

2) FAMILY LAW

a. There are three documents everyone should have today regardless of your age:

i. Your will would make it faster and easier for your family to gain access to your assets upon your death. A will can start as general and get more specific over time.

ii. A living will (now known as “Advance Medical Directive”) is necessary in case something happens that requires someone else to make a medical decision for you. The living will can incorporate a decision maker, specify consultants, and specific treatments you may want.

iii. A power of attorney when you are unable to make decisions for yourself, this allows an individual to be appointed you guardian and have access to your accounts and assets.

3) REAL ESTATE

a. Is putting down 20% a myth?

i. Putting down 20% for a house is obviously great but it’s not required.

b. If you’re getting ready to purchase a house, start with understanding how much you can afford and go see multiple lenders. You’ll want to see who has the best products/loan to offer. Seeing a lender is a necessary step so that the real estate agent can show you homes that you can afford to buy.

ALUMNAE Alumnae SPOTLIGHT KRISTEN DANLEY ’04

When choosing a career path, Kristen Danley’s advice is simple: listen to the part of you that gets excited. The Holy Child Class of 2004 alumna speaks from experience after many a 24-hour shift at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

For the last three years, she has served as a primary care attending physician at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) Karabots Pediatric Care Center. The clinic provides well child care, sick visits, family planning visits and social work services to an urban population with high medical and socioeconomic needs in West Philadelphia.

Kristen is not just a pediatrician, but an educator as well. Karabots is also a teaching clinic where Kristen trains medical students and pediatric residents from the University of Pennsylvania and CHOP. As she says, she’s helping to instill future doctors with empathy and compassion for their patients in addition to clinical knowledge.

ABOUT KRISTEN Kristen became interested in medicine during high school but didn’t know any doctors.

USING THE QR So, she started speaking up and asking who might be able to help her gain experience ABOVE! in the field. Opportunities presented themselves like attending a high school science conference at Georgetown University and shadowing at an infectious disease clinic at the National Institutes of Health. Those first forays into the world of medicine solidified her decision to study pre-med at Bucknell University. Kristen then took a year off after college to work as a clinical research assistant before going on to medical school at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and her Pediatric Residency at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

MARGUERITE BOTTORFF ’06

Some of the best memories stem from sitting around a table, sharing a meal with friends and family, talking about your day, or telling a funny story. Class of 2006 alumna Marguerite Bottorff said this kind of joy began for her at Holy Child during lunchtime with friends and has stayed with her as she launched her catering business more than 10 years later.

Marguerite is the founder and head chef at Silver Spoon Catering Company, which covers the DMV. Drawing on her own experience of developing Celiac Disease, she had the idea for an allergy-friendly catering and personal chef company. Now she regularly appears on local news segments, serves and hosts parties for embassies, receptions for galleries, and private dinners for some of DC’s most elite.

Marguerite’s journey to opening her own business has taken many turns, leading her to work with some of the biggest names in the food industry. While she initially attended The University of Mississippi, her Celiac Disease diagnosis took its toll, forcing her to move home. But Marguerite didn’t let her situation get in the way of pursuing an extraordinary opportunity. She reached out to an acquaintance with the Food Network and ended up landing a job working with Chef Bobby Flay’s production company, Rock Shrimp Production.

From there, Marguerite moved to Charleston, SC, where she worked at several restaurants and large catering companies, all while earning her degree from College of Charleston. She eventually moved home to Washington, DC, experimented in teaching, and even tried opening her own baby food delivery service. She always worked multiple jobs, including developing recipes at Whole Foods, serving as sous chef at Mikko in Dupont Circle, and then the secondever female chef in 27 years at Jaleo. All the while, she was trying to grow her own catering business.

As of September 15, 2019, the dream she worked so hard to achieve came true when she officially began working for herself.

MEG ZARAGOZA VELLECA ’98

Her passion for clothing design began at the young age of four, and never stopped. She started drawing dresses; she loved textiles, color, and clothing, and knew that she was destined for more. Class of 1998 alumna, Meg Zaragoza Velleca, says that her parents played a huge role in her journey to becoming successful in the clothing design industry.

Meg is the Senior Design Director of Childrenswear at Vineyard Vines, focusing her attention on boys, girls, and baby products for Vineyard Vines, and has been with them for over 8 years.

Meg attributes a lot of her success to the support of her parents, and the opportunities they gave her to learn to sew, read books on designers, and taking drawing and painting classes. Meg went to Florida State University where she majored in Apparel Design. The weekend of her graduation, her dream of moving to New York City came true.

Meg started her clothing design career as the second-ever employee at CK Bradley in New York, serving as the production manager and designer. After spending a lot of time in New York City’s garment district, she learned where she wanted to go next – a more designfocused job. From there, she moved to Milly NY, spending over 8 years as the lead designer and the founder’s first assistant.

After Milly NY, Meg went to Vineyard Vines, where she has had held numerous positions, including the head of women’s design and men’s design, before landing the Senior Design Director of Childrenswear.

One of the most rewarding parts of her job, Meg says, is seeing someone walking down the street, in the grocery store, or at a party, wearing a piece of clothing that she designed.

Alumna Nicola Whiteman (Class of 1991) is at the center of affordable housing and sustainability discussions in Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia. She is the Senior Vice President of Government Affairs for the Apartment and Office Building Association of Metropolitan Washington (AOBA.) The membership and lobbying organization represents owners and managers of commercial and multifamily residential properties, as well as companies that provide products and services to the real estate industry.

Nicola is AOBA’s chief advocate, which means she helps shape its position and policies as a regional leader on multifamily and commercial real estate issues. She’s been with the organization for 15 years and has been recognized for her work along the way. Nicola was a 2017 Excellence in Advocacy Awards Nominee and was awarded the 2009 Professional Women in Advocacy Conference Golden Best Award. She also serves on the Board of Directors for the Golden Triangle Business Improvement District, which represents the Northwest DC neighborhood stretching from Pennsylvania Avenue to Dupont Circle.

Besides her work with AOBA, uplifting women is close to Nicola’s heart. In fact, providing opportunities for other women to succeed is what she is most proud of. Nicola says her racially and gender diverse advocacy team at AOBA, which is comprised of three African American women, one Pakistani woman, and an African American man, is one of the most diverse in the region.

9 Jennifer Baumgartner Royse was featured on Holy Child’s social media

during Women’s History Month in March. Jennifer is a clinical psychologist specializing in the treatment of anxiety, mood, and drug and alcohol use disorders. Currently, she works with veterans who are suffering primarily with PTSD at the VA in Pennsylvania. In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Royse specializes in the psychology of dress, examining internal reasons for external choices and authored the book “You Are What You Wear: What Your Clothes Reveal about You.” Prior to this work, Dr. Royse was a science and math teacher for Holy Child’s upper school and counselor for the middle school.

2005 Noreen Ahmed earned her Master of Public Policy from UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs, Los Angeles, CA in June. Noreen was the 2020 Department Leadership and Service Award Recipient. She was a Board of Directors member and Personnel Committee Chair of Associated Students UCLA. Noreen was one of four graduate UCLA representatives to serve on board for 1500-person nonprofit that operates UCLA’s student services. She lead monthly Personnel Committee meetings to discuss efforts to engage ASUCLA employees. 15 Meghan Karanian Sindall and her husband, Mike, welcomed their son, Lochlan John Sindall. Laetitia N'Dri received a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Maryland (Baltimore) in May 2019. She is doing a 2-year post-doctoral fellowship in Health Economics & Outcomes Research (HEOR), sponsored by Novartis Pharmaceuticals. Lucy Gilak recently graduated from University of Pennsylvania with BAs in Neuroscience and Nutrition Science, and minors in Law & Society and Chemistry. She started a new job on June 1 with Amarex Clinical Research, an NSF International company based in Germantown, MD. She helps write protocols/reports/other documentation related to clinical trials of new drug products. Lucy stated, "It is a good way to merge my interests in science and writing! I'm definitely lucky to have found a job when the market is in this state." Carly Soistman made the Fall 2019 President’s List at University of Alabama with an academic record of 4.0. She graduated from Alabama in May. Catherine Altemus was featured on our Actions Not Words Day for her work in raising money and awareness for the Save the Children and No Kid Hungry Foundations. Catherine, who, after the Charlottesville marathon, she had been training for was cancelled, decided to raise money and run it while social distancing in DC. Amiri Hill is a Government and Politics Major at the University of Maryland, College Park. Amiri serves as the historian for the University of Maryland, College Park Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). In addition, she is an active volunteer with the Community Action Council of Howard County, where she volunteers to help Howard County residents navigate the Food Bank. Moreover, during Winter Break 2020, Amiri traveled to Havana, Cuba where she studied Foreign Policy decision making and U.S./Cuba relations. Amiri was a Summer 2020 intern in Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke’s Washington, D.C. office where she learned more about the legislative process. In addition, Amiri is a summer 2020 Congressional Intern with the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation. Looking into the future, she will intern in the University of Maryland Undergraduate Student Legal Aid Office during the Spring 2021 semester and will be graduating May 2021. 25 Justine Verheul was the Choreographer and Assistant Director on Holy Child’s production of Bye Bye Birdie in February.

Jackie Keeney joined Suzi Montes de Oca for lunch at the University of Miami in February where she is majoring in exercise physiology with a minor in biology and Spanish.

Jackie recently made the Dean’s List and the Provost’s List. She plans to be a physical therapist.

She also works part-time as an equestrian instructor. Kendall Soistman was named to the College of Charleston Fall 2019 President's List. Kendall is a communication major.

Students at Holy Child learn early on about Cornelia Connelly’s motto, Actions Not Words. Many continue living out that saying in the careers they choose to pursue. We have seen and heard about our alumnae in the medical field (doctors, nurses, and first responders) who continue to make a difference each day, especially since the outbreak of COVID-19 in the United States. ALUMNAE WEEKEND

There was disappointment in our community that Alumnae Weekend 2020 did not take place in person due to the coronavirus pandemic. Holy Child's Communications and Alumnae Relations Departments collaborted to creatively present enjoyable Facebook Live experiences on April 24 and 25. Friday evening, classes scheduled to celebrate milestone reunions were treated to a video that recognized each of the “0” and “5” years with photos and a song from that “era.”

Alumnae gathered for virtual happy hours and shared their screen shots.

Saturday morning alumnae ABOUT OUR GIRLS NIGHT IN! enjoyed two Facebook Live events: first, Kerry Flanagan Nicolardi ’00 read "Room on the Broom" to children and grandchildren of our alumnae, followed

by Lauren Mills ’03 who led a yoga and WATCH OUR meditation session.

STORY TIME! Both of these virtual events were organized

by Neda Ghassabeh ’03 and were so well received that requests were submitted to include these two events during our SEE OUR YOGA SESSION! April 23/24 Alumnae Weekend 2021 lineup.

We will also celebrate the milestone reunions of the classes of 0s, 1s, 5s, and 6s.
