“We have been amazed and impressed with the work that the Holy Child team has done to create a safe, challenging, fun environment for our daughter during these unprecedented times. We understand the amount of flexibility, creativity, and fortitude it takes to work through the problems that were in front of you at the start of this year. You have communicated beautifully asking for feedback and taking action on the feedback, resulting in the community feeling heard. You have brought together a staff of professionals that are thoughtful, caring, and understanding of our girls and the unique space that they are in at this point in their lives. While it goes without saying, this year has been beyond challenging for all of us, both professionally and personally, but you all should be commended and applauded for the job you have done. Holy Child has reminded us that there are brighter days ahead, that we can do hard things, and that we are supported and cared for.”

A NOTE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
Welcome to 2021! What a year it has been. We typically look to turning a page into a new year with some fondness for the year gone by and some hope for what is to come. I think, for many of us, associating the word “fond” with the year 2020 is quite a mismatch. While the year was filled with sadness and pain, I think it’s important to reflect upon – and be grateful for – the gifts the past year brought as well.
This issue has two themes, the first of which is teamwork and collaboration. On a global scale, teamwork and collaboration took center stage. The heroic efforts of the healthcare sector continue to be incredible to witness. The development of multiple vaccines for the deadly coronavirus in record time seems like a miracle, but it is a reality because of the hard work of scientists all over the world. People took care of fellow members of their communities who were ill, out of work, or grieving devastating losses. At Holy Child, the collaboration between faculty, administration, and staff has been nothing short of amazing. Like so many businesses and organizations, last March we had to stop in our tracks, reorient ourselves, and then reinvent how to deliver a Holy Child education in a completely new way. Every few weeks, it hits me how remarkable this is. Every single person in our institution rallied behind this effort and found new ways to work, teach, and create. I’ve been able to see firsthand the creativity and imagination of our community. In the face of such stress, not only professionally, but personally as we all coped with fears about the health of our own families, everyone who works at Holy Child united as a team and ultimately focused on our mission of educating young women. Never before has Cornelia Connelly’s instruction for her schools to “meet the wants of the age” been more relevant. When we look back on 2020, we will all remember not only a global pandemic, but a national reckoning regarding the systemic racism and oppression that continues to exist in the United States. Holy Child has been actively working to recognize, address, and eradicate all forms of racism and discrimination. Over the past few months, many community members have spoken up about the injustices, discrimination, and prejudice that they have experienced, whether on our campus or in our broader society, and they have called Holy Child to action. We are an anti-racist community and we reject all forms of racism and discrimination as a contradiction to our mission, vision, values, and goals. In addition to the new initiatives that you will see highlighted in this magazine, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) goals are infused throughout our Strategic Operating Plan, which guides our work throughout the year. By putting this work at the forefront of every aspect of what we do as a school, we position ourselves to be thoughtful about our actions, our biases, and our journey as an institution, and honor our commitment to revere the dignity and uniqueness of each person. This year, we will be commemorating the 175th anniversary of the founding of the Society of Holy Child Jesus under the banner – and the second theme of this issue - “To Love and Serve.” There will be a variety of events for this celebration, both in the U.S. and internationally, in which we can come together as a global community to celebrate and pray. The Global Sisters Report shared the following thoughts about this anniversary and draws some remarkable parallels: When Cornelia Connelly established the Society in 1846, England was a land of bitter divisions, hunger and disease. Cholera wiped out thousands of people, and in Ireland, a blight had almost destroyed the potato crop, causing the Great Famine. It was also an era of exploding scientific awareness and technological expertise. Alongside and evoked by this rapidly changing situation, there was much religious questioning. 175 years later, many of those descriptions can be ‘matched’ in all the countries where the Society is serving. We know the current times well ... and we also know that when Cornelia and the first sisters arrived in Derby (England), they ‘rolled up their sleeves’, literally and metaphorically, and got on with what God was asking of them in the situation. This anniversary year is an invitation for us to do the same, whether still shielding or in semi-lockdown or returning to work in schools and other ministries. I am so honored to be part of this remarkable community. I am grateful for the wisdom we have gained through shared adversity and am hopeful about what lies ahead in the year to come.

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT: NURSE GILLETTE BY NORA FITZPATRICK
Cindy Gillette reached a milestone anniversary last year as an employee at Holy Child. Gillette, or “Nurse” as she is affectionately called by students and faculty, celebrated her 15th anniversary as the school’s nurse in 2020. An alumna from the class of 1979, Gillette came to Holy Child after the physician whose practice she worked in as a nurse practitioner retired. Little did she know at the time that she would become a fixture in the life of the school and beloved to both the student body and her colleagues. Being a school nurse is so much more than administering medicine and providing minimal first aid. Gillette arranges flu shots for faculty, coordinates blood drives, and chaperones field trips. She is a passionate student advocate and an attentive listener. “I try to take a look at the whole student and help them get their needs met: mind, body, and spirit.”
Not one to sit idly by, Gillette is an active participant if the life of the school and volunteers for roles at Holy Child outside of the health room. In her role as the nurse, every student walks through her door at one time or another, so she is perfectly suited to be a part of so many of the other events and traditions at Holy Child. She has spoken at Ring Day and Baccalaureate Mass, and attended retreats including Kairos. “I was a group leader at Kairos numerous times and one year actually ran the whole retreat! I have been a chaperone on local field trips and trips to Philadelphia to see the Pope and to Italy on spring break.” Back in 2005 when she started at Holy Child, Gillette could not have anticipated the onset of a global pandemic and how it would affect our school and specifically, her role as school nurse. “Being a school nurse during a pandemic is nothing like anything I have ever done before,” Gillette says. She has taken on many additional roles while doing her best to take care of the students in front of her every day. During the summer, when she typically doesn’t work, Gillette was involved in establishing an entirely new set of protocols and procedures required to protect the Holy Child community during the coronavirus pandemic, including setting up an isolation room, obtaining hard to acquire PPE, and creating sanitizing protocols. Gillette adds, “It has been overwhelming to keep up with all of the changing information about COVID. It feels like I have participated in more webinars and meetings in the past year than in all of my nursing years!”
“I try to take a look at the whole student and help them get their needs met:
14
mind, body, & spirit."
In addition to all of the typical responsibilities of a school nurse, Gillette now manages the COVID symptom screening app that Holy Child uses. “Since August, I start each day by following up on any positive symptoms that are answered via app that parents fill out every morning for every student.” She also oversees COVID testing for the Holy Child community. “I follow up with the students that did not come for

the testing, follow up on positive results, answer parents' questions about the testing, contact the health department with positive results, and do contact tracing in conjunction with them.” These responsibilities required take up quite a lot of time outside the traditional school hours. “I spend several hours most weekends following up on the test results from the week before,” Gillette adds. Even typical visits to the health room have changed in the face of COVID. Gillette says, “Every student that comes to the health room gets asked COVID-19 screening questions and their temperature taken, and THEN I can ask them what they actually need! Some students just come because they need a break from class or are feeling anxious about the virus. I try my best to answer their questions as well as the questions of the faculty, staff, and parents.” In the face such a tumultuous year, Gillette still loves her job and says the best part of it is “without a doubt, the students. I love taking care of them and I learn so much from them.” They love her right back. Nora Rembold ’21 says, "Over the past three and a half years, Nurse has been one of the greatest support systems Holy Child has given me.
Dean of Students, Julie Connelly, can attest to how grateful we all feel that Cindy Gillette is on our team: “Nurse is a staple of the HC community and a valuable member of our team that keeps us functioning on a day-to-day basis. Like so many of us, her job saw several changes last March when the pandemic began, and she has not skipped a beat. She has done everything in her power to keep our community safe and has spent countless hours doing all she can to provide an environment safe for our students to thrive and our teachers to teach.” Thank you, Nurse. From all of us. We are grateful for you!
“
Nurse is the most wonderful, heartfelt, and caring person I have ever known. She was not just a school nurse but a friend, and a shoulder to cry on when I needed it the most. She cared for everyone, and she went above and beyond to do it. She still continues to ask me how I am, even though I graduated 3 years ago. I cannot thank her enough for all that she did for me! She deserves the world and more for who she is and what she does for others! Love and miss you Nurse, and thank you for all that you do! TATIJIANNA KLINK ENBERGH ‘ 18
“
“
Nurse isn’t your typical nurse who you find at any other school; she’s someone you can go to when you don’t just need help medically but mentally too. For that matter, I even had the privilege to have her as my Kairos leader junior year and right by my side senior year when I was a leader, too. That right there proves exactly the kind of person she is, and I’m so thankful to have had her help me grow as a student, friend, classmate, and person.
Whether it is to give me a band-aid, or significant life advice, she has been there unconditionally for me and is one of the most selfless people I know. As I approach my last lap of high school, I have come to see how much of a key piece of the puzzle she has been to my high school experience. Holy Child would simply not be the same place without her, and I am so thankful to have had the gift of getting to know her."

HYBRID LEARNING AT HOLY CHILD BY ZAC PETERSEN, US ENGLISH TEACHER & ENGLISH DEPARTMENT CHAIR
There is a lot that goes into making hybrid learning work. It is not just about classroom cameras, microphones, laptops, and a broadband internet connection. Although, these are important. Very important. There is also collaboration, trust, the joy of learning, the love of teaching, school pride, spiritual fortitude, and compassion for others. Luckily, none of these things are in short supply at Holy Child, even if hard rains do diminish slightly the broadband connection and the joy of learning. Technology functions to mediate all the wonderful qualities that Holy Child for so long has nourished. Indeed, technology even amplifies these qualities, accelerates them. Hybrid learning does have its challenges, no doubt. But it is through these challenges that our good qualities are drawn forth.
18
There are many innovative tools teachers use in their hybrid classrooms. Nearpod, for example, combines a traditional slideshow with real-time, interactive capabilities. Students love the “Time to Climb” activity, where they choose from an array of cute animal avatars before racing them up a mountain. The student who gets the most correct answers in the fastest amount of time finds herself alone at the summit. There are other important considerations to be had, though, like which student’s animal is the cutest, the best dressed, and why the penguin is at a natural disadvantage to the fox in running up a mountain. There is also Flipgrid, which is a video app that creates personalized student responses to a teacher’s discussion question. Flipgrid has the effect of a split-screen TV interview; both teacher and student share the extra concern of “looking good” on camera.
All teachers use Microsoft Teams to facilitate hybrid learning, and its “breakout room” feature— where students shuttle back and forth from the main virtual classroom to their own smaller group rooms—makes group work interesting and engaging. Breakout rooms are some of the best antidotes to students feeling left out in hybrid settings—groups are always comprised of members from both cohorts, so students at home occupy the same intimate space as their peers at school. Also, “breakout” rooms just sound liberatory in a way, like one could escape school at any time. But teachers can breakout as well. I am sure students are a bit wary of teachers “dropping in” at that inopportune time, which is why I always give them a gentle reminder of that possibility. When I do drop in, nine times out of ten students are working hard on the assigned task. One time out of ten they are rather engaged in what we call the “social-emotional” side of learning—asking each other how they are doing, cracking jokes, planning extra-curricular activities, complaining. I am careful at hiding my joy when I interpose on these social-emotional gatherings. I want them to know I am business. Shakespeare. Grammar. Serious stuff. But well-being is at the forefront of all teachers’ minds. Having a predictable yet differentiated day-to-day experience for students also makes hybrid learning work. Students recognize each of their teacher’s styles and personalities reflected in the way they spend the first five minutes of each class. Some play music. Some begin with prayer. The more organized of us will have projected the itinerary and goals for that day’s class. Others throw a low-stakes question in the chat so that everyone can immediately participate. Still others give a 50-point timed exam that determines whether the student will have a successful or failed future. Whatever happens in these first five minutes, students and teachers alike discover that this hybridized technological classroom brings out the best in us. My Humanities students know that the ancient Greeks conceived of technology differently than us—their word was tekhnē, which referred to a person’s skill or means in accomplishing an end. Technology wasn’t seen by the Greeks as an object. Today, we should view the technology associated with hybrid learning as a means. It is the means by which the joy of learning and the love of teaching are magnified.

Below is an excerpt from The Willow Holy Child’s Student Newspaper
By Pamela V. 22 On October 7th, 2020, I sent several teachers emails (from the safety of my room due to being in Cohort B) questioning how they felt about e-learning. Of all the teachers that responded, there was a similar answer in each one’s response. All felt that while e-learning was better than nothing and Holy Child was doing a wonderful job, it was extremely difficult to teach and to keep students engaged. As a student, I understood this. It is hard to stay engaged, especially in our homes, as we are surrounded by distractions. And sitting in front of a computer for seven hours? Exhausting. But what had not crossed my mind was how difficult it might be for teachers to not be able to do the job they love, and to see students possibly not feel that same kind of love or passion about the subject, all because we are sitting in front of screens rather than in a classroom.
It is very hard for teachers. We got into teaching because we are passionate about our subjects, but, also because we love sharing that excitement with our students, and we enjoy working with students. It is heartbreaking to see so many students who are frustrated, discouraged, and tired and know there is nothing I can do to help.” These two sentences really put things into perspective. Besides the obvious challenges in putting classes together and keeping students engaged, teachers must stand idly by and watch students lose a fire for a subject they might have loved just the year before. I never would have realized how hard this might be for a teacher whose job is to educate students and get them excited about what excites them.
As Ms. Tomon put it, “It makes me sad that students are not getting the same experience in science class as previous years ... Mr. Thomas Deutsch, Ms. Lauren Walter, and Mrs. Kelly Tomon
LOVE & SERVICE
Celebrating
BY CATHERINE EASBY-SMITH ALBORNOZ ‘98, CAMPUS MINISTER
17 5 YEARS O F TH E SOCIETY O F TH E H O LY C H ILD JESU S
On the most gorgeous October day, we gathered on the turf field for an outdoor Mass to celebrate Founder’s Day. It was the first time a full cohort of students (the half that are on campus that week) gathered all together in any way for many months, and there was a characteristic joy in the air. Our celebrant, Fr. Ebuka Mbanude, boldly proclaimed to our students that maybe in 175 years people would be speaking about them! That with a deep connection to God and the grace to “be yourself but make that self all that God wants it to be,” as Cornelia Connelly wrote, they could have a lasting impact on the world around them and create a legacy, as Cornelia did 175 years ago when she started the Society of the Holy Child Jesus. These words struck me deeply, as this powerful message made me consider what just one person, relying on God, can do. Venerable Cornelia Connelly has been an inspiration in my life ever since I was introduced to her when I was a freshman at Holy Child in 1994. Truthfully, my first knowledge of her was surface level – trying to memorize trivia facts about her for the annual Connelly Quiz. But evident in our school mission and halls, I experienced her vision of joyful, faithfilled, well-rounded education for young women. She was so ahead of her time, and her ministry has impacted generations of students. She left behind the amazing legacy of the Society, schools, and ministries to serve those on the margins. I wonder if she could have ever known all that the Society would grow to become! As I have come to know her life story more deeply as an adult, I remain amazed that she was able to accomplish all that she did, despite the barriers and tragedies in her life. She remained faithful to God’s desires for her and led with faith and joy. And as such, she is a powerful witness to all of us, from her
Sisters to each and every student who has attended a Holy Child School. “Love and Serve” is the theme that the Society has given for the 175th anniversary celebration. This is so fitting to represent her life and legacy, as well as the vision for our network of schools in the United States and around the world. I see my fellow alumnae acting out this legacy all around me, every day. We are women of faith and action who occupy every profession, lead our communities, care for our neighbors and families, support one another, and serve our wider communities. All the time, but especially in this of pandemic, I have been inspired to see alumnae stepping up, each in her own way, to love and serve. This love and service looks like medical professionals caring for those most in need, addressing food insecurity by creating new programs, participating in college service trips, offering direct and indirect service to organizations in cities across the country, teaching creatively in so many different platforms, and doing big and small acts of kindness, among others. Cornelia’s legacy is so evident to me every day at school, which I’m privileged to experience. On campus, even with restrictions and masks, our students are joyful, thrilled to be here and support one another. Their love shows up as they lead retreats, perform thousands of hours of community service on campus, off campus, and through innovative virtual service that puts them in encounter with others. As Campus Minister, I get to watch students’ journeys, as they seek deeper relationship with God, and as they grow in understanding of themselves, others, and the world around them. Some of my favorite Holy Child days are when we’re doing something like making sandwiches for Martha’s Table, assembling hygiene kits for women experiencing homelessness, or driving students to Washington School for Girls to help with the math club there on a Saturday. The spirit of Cornelia and the SHCJ’s love and serve is active and vibrant, and serves as an inspiration for so many of us, from our current students and faculty to all of us across generations. 21
LIVING A LIFE OF
ACTIONS NOT WORDS H O LY C H I L D ’ S CHRISTIAN SERVICE PROGRAM
BY OGECHI AKALEGBERE, CHRISTIAN SERVICE COORDINATOR
The Christian Service Program at Holy Child seeks to form students who live out our motto: “Actions Not Words.” This comprehensive program allows all grade levels to participate in service and reflection as a community. With the many changes and challenges of this year, we recommitted to rolling out this program this school year. Over the past several months, our Holy Child community has proven that a heart of service in action runs through the soul of the school.
pandemic meant a need to adapt to the changing needs and availability organizations had during this year. That has allowed us to rethink previous partnerships and develop new partnerships as well. In this year of pivoting, students have learned lessons in how to remain flexible, how to rethink situations, and how to prioritize the things that matter to them the most. Two hallmark programs students were involved in excellently highlight these lessons learned.
This program supports our Holy Child Network goals, pointing to the values of justice, peace, compassion, and a dynamic faith community. Students found ways to serve others in our wider community and to be innovative with new service opportunities while encountering people beyond their current circles of relationships. Service has always been integrated into the traditions and opportunities as a school, but through this program, students have the added ability to discover how they can best put their individual gifts and talents into action.
The first program was a new relationship formed with the nonprofit Empowering the Ages. Through their Sharing Smiles program, students created artwork and wrote inspiring poems and letters for senior citizens experiencing isolation. This then evolved into the Crossing Paths program that Holy Child students piloted over the summer and into the fall semester. Eight students met twice weekly with a group of seniors at the Byron House Assisted Living facility. The students learned about intergenerational communication and planned discussion topics in order to have fruitful conversations each time. One student who was part of this pilot group was Caroline. This summer, Holy Child established our Diversity Steering Committee to continue our work around diversity, equity, and inclusion. As our diversity statement says, Connelly School of the Holy Child is an anti-racist community and rejects all forms of racism and discrimination as a contradiction to our mission, vision, values, and goals. Our community is actively working to recognize, address, and eradicate all forms of racism and discrimination. Holy Child’s Board of Trustees, administrators, alumnae, parents, faculty, and staff are collaborating to end racial bias and any other form of discrimination and to empower our students.

I am a senior at Holy Child and I am a member of the Diversity Committee, the DEI Steering Committee, and the National
What keeps me connected to Holy Child are the students in the grades below me and future students. POC (people of color) Holy Child students keep me especially connected. I hope to make a change in the culture and environment at Holy Child to ensure that it’s a safe and inclusive environment for all. My main goal for the steering committee is to educate students at an age-appropriate level on what diversity, equity, and inclusion truly is by implementing it throughout the curriculum. With this implementation, I hope that we as a committee and community can minimize the daily microaggressions and social challenges that many minorities face throughout an average school day. My interest in DEI stems from my experiences as a Black woman in predominantly white institutions. My schools, both public and private, have always lacked diversity, equity and inclusion, which in turn, has a negative effect on POC. Speaking from my experiences as a Black student, it has been hard trying to both learn, deal with students and teachers making insensitive comments, stay positive, have a good attitude, play sports, and educate others on what is right and wrong all in the span of 7-9 hours.

HOLY C HILD SE N IOR
What is your connection to Holy Child? I am a current senior who entered Holy Child in the 6th grade. What keeps you connected to Holy Child? I have a great appreciation for the value of education, and Holy Child has done a great job of providing me with the tools to explore who I am as a student and what I would like to pursue in the future. For that, I am immensely grateful. What is your main goal for the Steering Committee? I would like to see systemic change occur within the Holy Child community. For far too long, DEI initiatives have been spearheaded by students and a few faculty members, but that is simply not enough. Because racism is deeply rooted in the United States' education system, Holy Child cannot truly become a place conducive for learning until it, as an institution, is actively working to be anti-racist and inclusive of all peoples. What are your hopes and dreams for current and future Holy Child students? I look forward to seeing a climate created at Holy Child where every student feels supported, not only as students, but as individuals, within the community. I hope that current and future students can find the confidence and feel empowered to be unapologetically themselves. Why are you interested in DEI work? Again, virtually every institution in the United States is rooted in racism and anti-Blackness, so not until these systems are either reworked or abolished altogether can true equity be obtained. I think DEI work in education is a needed step towards providing BIPOC students with the same access to education as their white peers.
What is your connection to Holy Child? I am an alumna, class of 2004 (go green!) What keeps you connected to Holy Child? It’s the echo found in the spirit song. “. . . But however far you wonder, you’ll hear it echo in your hearts . . .” The volume of the echo varies. Sometimes it’s ever so faint and other times it’s more pronounced. But we all hear it. Well, this past summer, we had an echo, and its soundwaves moved through Holy Child like water. It filled all the empty spaces, exposed the cracks, and moved many buried emotions to the surface. The echo was loud and resonated with everyone – alumnae, students, parents, and faculty and staff. Whether you experienced trauma or not, signed the petition or not, wrote a reflection or not, or attended the summer alumnae town halls or not, we all looked to Holy Child for a response – for action. We all felt this echo because we are Holy Child. We are a community. And when one person or a group of individuals is hurt in a community, the whole community is impacted. I heard that echo and it moved me like never before. I found myself in a peculiar position, returning to Holy Child, because I thought maybe now there was some space at Holy Child for me (us) to return. 26
(LESLEY BROWN CON’T FROM PREVIOUS PAGE)
What is your main goal for the Steering Committee? My main goal is for the Steering Committee to fulfill its role – “to create action items and access the outcomes of various DEI projects and initiatives.” In particular, I would like the committee to view DEI as a community value and not as an interest of an individual or specific groups. I would like for the committee to consider ways the entire school can participate in already established DEI efforts spearheaded by individual faculty and staff members and students. A few examples could include: implementing the Anti-Defamation League’s “No Place for Hate” program for schools; incorporating DEI elements to the core (not elective) curriculum; establishing clear provisions in the code of conduct to determine unacceptable behavior within a DEI context; and embedding DEI elements in established Holy Child traditions (i.e. adding a Woman’s World Empowerment Day to Spirit Week). I think that there are endless opportunities to showcase DEI as a community value shared by all, and the committee’s review of the findings and recommendations from the cultural audit conducted this school year would be another starting point for further exploration of these opportunities. What are your hopes and dreams for current and future Holy Child students? My hope is that every student feels valued for who she is and who she aspires to be from the moment she enters until the moment she exits the halls of Holy Child. Why are you interested in DEI work? I think I can provide a more fruitful answer if I rephrase the question from the perspective of why DEI work is important for all of us. We all seek to be appreciated, respected, and valued. Unfortunately, some of us do not feel this sense of belonging because of how we look, when we are born, what we believe, who we love, where we are from, how much income we generate, or due to any physical or mental challenges we may face. So, what do we do? We find ways to access and check our own implicit bias. We actively engage and include our peers. We realize that the sense of belonging we seek is the same sense of belonging we have the ability to provide. We take opportunities to live outside of our comfort zones so we can view life experiences through another’s lens. We dialogue. We love our neighbor. But those of us who live on the periphery cannot be the only ones carrying this responsibility. DEI work is a collaborative effort. We each share this responsibility and when we work together, we create the Holy Child community we want, and more importantly, we create the Holy Child community we need.
What is your connection to Holy Child? Alumna, class of 2008 DEVIKA keeps you connected to Holy Child? The community MAHONEY- What of strong and independent women, and seven years of fond memories and incredible friendships. NAIR ALUMN A ‘08
What is your main goal for the Steering Committee? The role of the Steering Committee is to hold the school accountable to its commitment to diversity work, in its promise to raise the bar in creating a safe and welcoming environment for students of color, supported by meaningful policy. I hope to move this work forward by facilitating conversations across stakeholders, taking a critical view, and representing alumnae of color to the best of my abilities. What are your hopes and dreams for current and future Holy Child students? I hope to see current Holy Child students across all walks of life helping to lead the change this Committee hopes to see. Oftentimes, we hear that the students have the vocabulary, the deep understanding, and the drive to advocate for change at the school. As the school takes further strides towards diversity, equity, and inclusivity, I hope Holy Child students are able to speak to their experiences and perspectives in this space (as well as listen to those of their fellow classmate’s). I truly believe this will help to build a more positive, nurturing learning environment for all students at the school for future generations of Holy Child graduates. Why are you interested in DEI work? As an alumna of color myself, I am personally invested in seeing DEI work move forward at Holy Child, given my own personal experiences with discriminatory and prejudiced behavior. However, the stories I have heard from black men and women, including fellow classmates, have affirmed my conviction that the work of racial justice is deeply necessary, and even life-saving. As such, I consider the values of diversity, equity, and inclusivity to directly align with my faith and this work part of an ongoing expression of those values.

Profession: Lawyer, independent political analyst, pundit and opinion maker, social critic, author, columnist, public speaker, principal of The Bernard Law Firm LLC and founder, president and CEO of the Bernard Center for Women, Politics & Public Policy.
What is your connection to Holy Child? My daughter, Avery Elizabeth Bernard Johns, started at Holy Child in 6th grade and is currently a 9th grader. What keeps you connected to Holy Child? There is an extraordinary sense of community, family, love, support, and commitment. For example, tragically, two years ago, my husband passed away during Christmas Break. The support our family received from Holy Child is something my family will never forget. Holy Child became and continues to be a support system that we didn’t expect and are so thankful for. Additionally, Holy Child’s reaction to the killings of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and others, and the statement from the Chairman of the Board where she spoke out against the “virus of racism and injustice that has long infected our nation” made me feel deeply connected to Holy Child. What is your main goal for the Steering Committee? My main goal for the Steering Committee is that we affirm our commitment to be an actively anti-racist organization, join the voices around the country and globe to proclaim that Black Lives Matter, and are dedicated to speaking out against all forms of discrimination. Additionally, it is my goal that the Steering Committee will focus its antiracism efforts on: Faculty Hires/Recruitment, School Curriculum, School Culture, Admissions/Recruitment, Student, Faculty & Staff Leadership roles at equity and justice programs like the annual NAIS People of Color Conference and Student Diversity Leadership Conference, Educators of Colors Conference, National Student Leadership Diversity Convention, and training student leaders in matters of diversity and social justice, Parent & Student Engagement, Board of Trustees Commitment What are your hopes and dreams for current and future Holy Child students? My hope and dreams for current and future students are that they are exposed to a variety of political and philosophical beliefs and for a Holy Child with a demonstrable commitment to racial, social, and gender justice. Also, I wish for current and future girls to continue to be educated in and surrounded by individuals who celebrate and applaud them for who they are, not who we think they should be. Why are you interested in DEI work? Among other reasons, my interest in DEI is primarily a result of me being the mother of two African American children and the America we live in today. From the 2012 death of Trayvon Martin, 2014 death of Michael Brown, and the numerous deaths of African Americans at the hands of police and others in recent years, including the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. There is not one day that I don’t worry about the world my children and the children of others face. Just as we are a nation of immigrants, we are a nation of diverse individuals and all of us are not only equal, but have an equal stake in America’s promise of life, liberty, and justice for all.

What is your connection to Holy Child? Parent to Olivia ’22 What keeps you connected to Holy Child? The community and the love and support they provide my daughter, our family and other families.
What is your main goal for the Steering Committee? To help strengthen Holy Child live out its mission of celebrating the uniqueness of all students, families, faculty and staff; and to embrace Cornelia Connally’s spirit, and commit to being an anti-racist institution. What are your hopes and dreams for current and future Holy Child students? That current and future students continue to learn in a compassionate and caring environment while learning about the world around them – one filled with unique individuals, different faiths, varying political views, and more. I hope the future generation of female leaders graduating from Holy Child learn to accept individuals for who they are and embrace those differences! Why are you interested in DEI work? It embodies the foundation of Cornelia Connelly’s teachings, benevolence, that is, disposition to do good. 28

Main goal for the Steering Committee: To collaborate on instituting best practices that ensure full support of all members of our community, especially our students.
SC HOOL COUN SE LOR
Hopes and dreams for current and future Holy Child students: That they enter the world of young adulthood self-actualized, confident in their whole selves, including all parts of their identities, and that they feel empowered to leave their marks on the world and move comfortably in a variety of environments. Why I am interested in DEI work: I’ve been involved in this work in one way or another since age 2, although the term “DEI” was not used then. That experience made entering into formal DEI work somewhat natural for me, not to be confused with easy. Students need access to opportunities and adults who will support their whole growth. This work pushes me to think deeply and courageously, to engage in constant education, and to collaborate with all school constituencies to ensure that I am centering students and supporting their growth.

What is your connection to Holy Child? I’ve taught at Holy Child the past 18 years! The first 14 years were solely in the middle school, but I transitioned to the upper school four years ago, and now teach Western Civilization.

What keeps you connected to Holy Child? I’m there – virtually or in person – nearly every day! What is your main goal for the Steering Committee? For all of Holy Child’s constituents to have their voices heard, be made aware of what DEI work is going on at Holy Child, and to have opportunities to talk to each other. What are your hopes and dreams for current and future Holy Child students? I hope that every Holy Child student will feel valued, seen, heard, and loved. I want each student to feel belonging and love at Holy Child, regardless of differing identities. Why are you interested in DEI work? I’m interested in DEI work because every student should feel that they belong at Holy Child. I love my kids, and it breaks my heart that some students haven’t felt that. On a grander scale, I firmly believe that everyone is equal and should have the same rights and opportunities, yet I have witnessed and heard about discrimination, racism, and prejudice, so I work for equality and equity within my larger community as well.
BEN HATTON TE AC HER
What is your connection to Holy Child? I am currently the AP Psychology and Honors Government and Law teacher at Holy Child. What keeps you connected to Holy Child? This is one of the best community of students, teachers, and administrators that I have had the pleasure to be part of.
What is your main goal for the Steering Committee? I want to help create both social and educational programs that increase empathy for others, inform students about the world at large, and creates a place where all feel valued, respected, seen, and heard. What are your hopes and dreams for current and future Holy Child students? I hope that future students find Holy Child to be a welcoming place. I hope that they receive an education (both academic, social, and emotional) that helps them be successful in whatever endeavors they pursue. Why are you interested in DEI work? I have been interested in equity since serving as a research assistant on Black Politics/White Power back in 1999. Spending a summer in Howard University’s library reading copies of The Crisis was really eye-opening to me. Since then I have taken every opportunity to receive DEI professional development as possible. There are so many marginalized voices in the world today and it is the responsibility of those everywhere but especially in education to make sure those voices are heard. 29

What is your connection to Holy Child? 11th and 12th Grade Counselor at Holy Child.
What is your main goal for the Steering Committee? My main goal for the Steering Committee is that we hear and learn from different perspectives, challenge one another to think critically about the injustices within Holy Child, and strategize solutions for breaking down barriers and creating a more inclusive environment for our students.
SC HOOL COUN SELOR
What are your hopes and dreams for current Holy Child students? My hope for current Holy Child students is that they continue to get involved in DEI work, get out of their comfort zones, and welcome those who are different than them with open arms and empathy. Why are you interested in DEI work? Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion work has been a passion of mine for quite some time. The work itself centers around one of the key pieces of my job as a school counselor: empathy. I am passionate about teaching others how to listen non-judgmentally and put yourself in someone else's shoes.

I am an alumna and have enjoyed working at Holy Child for just over 20 years, connecting alumnae to DIR EC TOR OF DE VELOP ME N T & one another and to our students. ALUMN AE R E LAT ION S What keeps you connected to Holy Child? It makes my day when alumnae offer to mentor young alumnae and talk to current students about the college they attended or their specific career path. Establishing those networking opportunities within both our alumnae community and expanding it via our Holy Child Network of Schools is important to me. What is your main goal for the Steering Committee? My main goal is for the Steering Committee to work together to provide ways in which all constituents will better understand, recognize, and embrace the diversity in our Holy Child community. What are your hopes and dreams for current and future Holy Child students? I would like to see our current and future students become confident women who respect people of all ethnic and racial backgrounds and demonstrate this in their lives as they go forth to shape a better world. Why are you interested in DEI work? I believe the time has come to ensure that our alumnae association articulates messaging to all alumnae that they are part of a network of diverse women who will support one another for years to come through networking channels and mentorship. I look forward to the programming that the Alumnae Council’s DEI committee is planning for our students and alumnae.

MULTICULTURAL DIVERSITY COORDINATOR
What is your connection to Holy Child? I am a mom of two alumnae, have worked at Holy Child in other positions for 7 years, and I believe that this community is caring and loving. What keeps you connected to Holy Child? My work and my passion in the belief that Holy Child will become a fully inclusive community.
What is your main goal for the Steering Committee? Having many voices in the room that will help with ideas and suggestions to move the DEI work forward for the good of our current and future students. What are your hopes and dreams for current and future Holy Child students? My hopes and dreams are that Holy Child becomes inclusive so that every student feels that she belongs in this community as her authentic self. We are a Catholic institution, and it was instilled in us by Jesus’ example to love one another as who we are. He also said that we should have “faith with work;” actions not words. Cornelia Connelly believed that education was best accomplished when each student was trusted and cared for. She also sought to live her life with joy and as “one continuous act of love.” We also want the students to be ready for college and, as a college prep school, we need to ensure that students are ready to confront the world as they leave Holy Child. The country is in a difficult historic time, and teaching our students how to understand those that are different from them will go a long way and will help them to succeed in life.

ALUMNAE COUNCIL LETTER Dear Holy Child Alumnae Community, Happy New Year, and welcome to 2021! Wow…well that year sure wasn’t expected. First and foremost, I want to thank all of you, our amazing alumnae, for supporting the school in such a trying year. Living through a global pandemic has been hard on everyone. I am so impressed by the school’s amazing success with virtual learning and their ability to make such a quick change. If you know me, you know I try very hard to keep things upbeat. So, I’ll start off by focusing on the positives. The Holy Child Network app is growing thanks to more of you, our alumnae, for signing up! It's not just a directory, it is so much more! It allows you to network with other alumnae in your area of expertise; it provides mentorship opportunities as both a mentor and/or a mentee. This Network is just one example of the many ways that Holy Child alumnae are women for others. Please see our ad in this section about how to sign up! Our Alumnae spotlights have continued to highlight the varied paths our alumnae have taken in their years since graduating Holy Child. This year we have shared profiles of a vice president of a large association, a financial services company, an IT firm, a director of design for a major clothing manufacturer, and our most recent Spotlight, a college student who wants to make a difference for the lives of alumnae and current students of color. Make sure to check all of them out! I am constantly impressed by our alums. As I mentioned in our summer/fall Connelly Contact magazine, the Alumnae Council added the DEI Committee giving the Council four working committees. While these committees have their own specific goals to achieve over the course of the year, they also collaborate on various initiatives. In November, the Networking & Events Committee presented another live, virtual panel discussion called "Health & Wellness in the Age of COVID 19," with four alumnae experts who provided suggestions on ways we can all try to de-stress and better deal with the frustrations and anxieties caused by the coronavirus pandemic. This event was so well attended. Thanks to quarantine, so many of you were free to join us from the comfort of your own homes! We look forward to hosting more of these discussions. The Archives Committee continues to scan photos, catalog events, and, with the help of alumnae who are also parents of current students at Holy Child, they will refresh the display cases in the hallway of the Main Building. Last year, our Alumnae Weekend 2020 celebrations were abruptly cancelled. But in just three short weeks a virtual storybook time, yoga/meditation session, and photo montage with a favorite song from the reunion class years were all presented on Facebook Live. This year we hoped to reconnect on campus, as we did in 2019, to celebrate Alumnae Weekend 2021. With the safety of everyone being our priority, we will be celebrating virtually this coming April. Plans are in the works for various "live" virtual events, including Career Day, Wednesday, April 21. We will recognize the milestone reunions of the 0s, 1s, 5s, and 6s, not just for a weekend, but over the course of the week of April 19! We plan to have daily virtual events for alums from all over to join in on. If you would like to know more about our planning process, or have a creative suggestion, please contact me!
I look forward to your participation, involvement, and support of our Holy Child community as we continue Cornelia Connelly's motto of Actions Not Words. May God keep you safe and healthy, and bless us all with a wonderful 2021. “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)

ALUMNAE SPOTLIGHT: TAHANA AUGUSTIN '16 BY LIS WARREN '08
People are like chemical compounds, complex combinations of atoms and molecules forged by their experiences and environment. In the words of Carl Gustav Jung, “The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed.” Tahana Augustin personifies this. Her experiences transformed her into a purposeful and empathetic woman and recently enabled her to encourage Holy Child to focus efforts on creating a diverse and inclusive community. And, literally speaking, she cultivated a love for chemistry which is guiding her career path today. As a young child, Tahana nurtured her curiosity by conducting experiments with household items and cooking ingredients. Tahana continued to tinker with chemistry in classes taught by Helen Place. Ms. Place gave Tahana true support, which was transformative for Tahana, boosting her confidence and interest in chemistry. This led her to graduate from Penn State University (Class of 2020) with a degree in Chemical Engineering. She is now studying biochemistry in a post-baccalaureate program and plans to combine her fascination with skin and joy of helping others into a Dermatology career. Her college experience transformed her further. Tahana befriended students of many ethnicities and religious backgrounds. This experience emphasized what she already knew to be true: diversity is essential to enriching our perspective on life and empathy for others. After the senseless murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and countless other Black Americans, Tahana was disheartened and enraged. She noted organizations and leaders vowing specific actions to fight racism and foster inclusivity. Tahana was looking for leadership and shared outrage from her beloved alma mater, but in June, didn’t see that. She shared this sentiment on Instagram and was astounded by the response: a flood of messages from alumnae of color expressing similar feelings and painful memories at Holy Child about microaggressions and unconscious bias. The stories fueled her into action. Tahana contacted the Head of School, Dr. Shannon Gomez, and urged her to engage in listening sessions with students and alumnae. These listening sessions, held in late June, provided first hand insight into many students experiences while at Holy Child, and were a wake up call for the school. Tahana’s courage ignited Holy Child to make the school’s existing DEI plan something that lives beyond paper and focuses on actions, not words. 36
Change, whether social or chemical, is always brought about by a catalyst. Our community is indebted to Tahana’s courage. Now, we all must do the daily work to hold ourselves and Holy Child accountable in creating a safe & inclusive environment and celebrating our differences. Read more from Tahana about her Holy Child experience: What was one of the most impactful moments in your Holy Child career? One of the most impactful moments I’ve had at Holy Child was getting the chance to tutor children at the National Center for Children and Families (NCCF) in Bethesda, MD. The center is dedicated to vulnerable youth and families of the DC Metropolitan Area. They serve to provide them with a healthy living environment, as they find ways to prosper in our society. Though coming from different backgrounds, these children and I were able to find common ground. I loved that I was not only able to boost their academic confidence, but also be someone they looked forward to seeing and getting to know a few times out of the week. This opportunity given to me by Holy Child made me realize that I have a love for serving others. What are a few things you hope Holy Child will improve over the next few years? There are a few matters I wish my alma mater would refine over the course of the next few years, such as enforced disciplinary actions, revamped mental health resources (especially for the Black students and other students of color), and an overall sense of transparency when communicating. What advice or encouragement would you impart on Black students and students of color? There seems to be this unwritten rule in high school, a status quo if you will, that encourages homogeneity in the way the young women express themselves. It enables the pretense that justifies the more one deviates from the “norm,” the less accepted one is. I wish to give the young Black women, along with the young women of color, advice that goes against this credence, advice I wish I had followed when I was a high school student attending Holy Child. No one’s narrative is the same, so do not let anyone dictate how you should write yours. Above all else, be unapologetically yourself and embrace all that you are. I noticed the more I tapped into the part of myself I repressed for so long, the happier and more confident I became. Uplift yourself, love yourself, stand up for yourself (because no one else will do it for you in the same way you can)! You won’t regret it.
Natalie Pascale Catliota’s story is a motivating one of what it truly means to rise to the top. Just as she did at Holy Child, Natalie has taken each opportunity presented to her and learned from it. Natalie, class of 2005, studied Toxicology at Clemson University, with the intention of being a research scientist. She’s not alone in that sometimes what you study in college doesn’t exactly match up with the opportunities outside of school. After graduating Clemson, she began working at the Maryland Department of the Environment, where she realized her passion was in experimentation, searching for solutions to problems, and not necessarily the science behind it. While working at a restaurant, Natalie waited on the recruiter for a small government contractor, NetCentrics Corporation, who offered to bring her in for an interview. She accepted a position working at the front desk as an Administrative Assistant, where she picked up lunch for employees, made copies, and performed other administrative duties. While she wasn’t very inspired by that work, she fell in love with the company. She took advantage of every opportunity she was given – offering to take notes at every meeting, asking questions every time she could, and learning everything she could about government contracting.

Natalie helped grow NetCentrics’ annual revenue to over $100M, and was named Chief Operating Officer. Life as COO was “a ton of fun and very dynamic,” Natalie said. “Every day was a new set of challenges. I loved the company building part.” Even though she loved everything about the company and her work, her passion was working with growing small businesses, so in February 2020, Natalie left NetCentrics to join a small company, GCyber, as VP of Operations. Natalie has been recognized by her industry as a finalist for WashingtonExec’s 2019 Pinnacle Awards Cybersecurity Industry Executive of the Year. She was also nominated for Women in IT’s Silicon Valley Business Leader of the Year and won The Golden Bridge Awards’ 2019 Woman of the Year in Business & the Professions. Noreen Miyake-Char, Holy Child Class of 1993, says she never sought out a career in the investment industry. Rather, the industry found her. After graduating from The George Washington University with a communications degree, Noreen was working at a temp agency. She talked about her career plans with the temp agency’s owner, who brought up an open position she knew of with her husband’s investment firm, American Asset Management Group, Inc. Noreen knew nothing about the investment world, unless you count the times at Holy Child she used to talk on the phone pretending like she was trading stocks.
NOREEN MIYAKECHAR
Two months later, she was offered the open position of Assistant Research Analyst. Noreen had hard work to do in order to go from a communications degree to the world of finance. After taking the position at AAMG after college, she enrolled herself in Accounting and other business classes at Johns Hopkins University. “A new and unfamiliar world opened up to me. I always wondered what business school was like, and I was excited to explore it,” says Noreen. She worked full time at AAMG and continued to attend evening and weekend classes, eventually graduating from Johns Hopkins with her MBA in Finance and completed the Graduate Certificate in Investments program. She also passed the Uniform Investment Adviser Law Examination.

Twenty years later, she is still with AAMG but now as the Director of Investment Operations, Portfolio Manager and co-owner. Currently, Noreen has a diverse client base, from individuals and families to organizations, non-profits and charitable foundations. As part of her position, she’s responsible for AAMG’s securities trading, portfolio reporting and portfolio accounting, which includes stock selection for clients’ portfolios and developing and maintaining several security databases. The Washington Post and Five Star Professional have recognized Noreen multiple times as a “Five Star Wealth Manager” for the Washington, DC area.

FRIENDS, We are living through an unprecedented moment in time, marked by events that will change the course of history. In the midst a global pandemic, when life as we know it has been turned upside down, what gives me hope is the promise of the next generation. The resilience our students will carry with them because of this trying time is preparing them to face the challenges of our ever-evolving world with confidence and grace. I cannot think of a more worthy cause for support than these talented young women. As the school shifted to virtual instruction last March, Holy Child’s parents, teachers, and administrators rallied together to ensure each girl continued to receive a well-rounded education. Whether we were together on campus or together online, this partnership has been our greatest strength. I wish to express my deepest gratitude to the many members of our community for such strong philanthropic support as we overcame numerous challenges in the 2019-20 fiscal year. I am pleased to report that, together, we raised over $1.6 million dollars in support of Holy Child. Each year, tuition alone does not cover the full cost of educating our students. Unrestricted gifts provide the highest level of financial flexibility for Holy Child, enabling school leadership to make strategic investments in the people and programs that bring the full Holy Child experience to life. In the last year, $860K in unrestricted gifts were donated to the Fund for Holy Child, a 23% increase over the previous fiscal year. This level of support directly impacted our ability to respond to COVID-19 and to provide emergency support for families experiencing financial hardship. Our Board of Trustees as well as the faculty and staff led by example with 100% participation in annual giving, along with 75% of our parents and 16% of our alumnae. This includes gifts to the Fund for Holy Child as well as special initiatives such as the Turf Rehabilitation campaign and the Sr. Connie Craig Endowment Fund. To all our parents, alumnae, faculty, staff, past parents, grandparents, and friends who have let us share in their generosity, I offer my sincere thanks. I hope every donor listed in the enclosed report senses the immeasurable impact of your generosity. Thank you for inspiring us and joining us in educating women of Actions Not Words! On July 8, 2019, Holy Child received a month’s worth of rain within one hour, causing extensive damage to our facilities and destroying the athletic turf field. In response to these events, Holy Child came together to rehabilitate the turf and enhance Neil T. Coakley Stadium. We are deeply grateful to the donors named below who answered the call to get our Tigers back on the field so our young women could continue to learn lifelong lessons such as sportsmanship, teamwork, and leadership. ENDOWED FUNDS We are extremely grateful and acknowledge those who established funds during the 2019-2020 fiscal year, as well as those who continue to generously support the already established endowed funds at Connelly School of the Holy Child. THE SR. CONNIE CRAIG ENDOWMENT FUND Few members of the Holy Child community embody Cornelia Connelly’s call to live a life of “Actions not Words” the way Sr. Connie Craig, one of the school’s earliest teachers and still one of its greatest supporters, does. A member of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus since 1959, Sr. Connie has engaged generations of Holy Child students through thoughtful and dynamic teaching. The Sr. Connie Craig Endowment is a continuing, sustainable commitment to the future of Holy Child. This endowment endorses Sister Connie's contributions and emphasizes the community’s determination to extend the legacy she has established. It will also support the next generation of women of faith and action by granting the opportunity for a Holy Child education through scholarship.
