The Case for Scholarships Young people come to Holy Cross College for a host of reasons. Many of them are attracted by our well-deserved reputation for personalized academic attention. Others look forward to playing on one of our NAIA athletic teams. Still others are enticed by the rich lineage we share with Notre Dame and Saint Mary’s and the social and learning opportunities that our proximity to these larger schools entails. our goal is always to prepare them for a rewarding career by educating the whole person, mind, body, and spirit. Before this can occur, however, we must ensure that any deserving student — regardless of his or her circumstances — can afford to attend college. four-year private colleges in the United States — roughly $6,000 less per year than the national average — students and families still struggle to fit college tuition into their financial realities.
More than 90% of Holy Cross students receive institutional scholarships and tuition grants, 75% of which are need based. At the same time, students are leaving Holy Cross with substantial loan debt. The class of 2013 graduated with over $29,000 in educational debt per student. This limits their career options and post-baccalaureate opportunities. For first-generation college students especially, this level of debt can be a particularly daunting obstacle.

How You Can Help The cost of a college education should never stand between a deserving young person and a bright future. The Residence Hall Scholarship Initiative is an ambitious drive to generate awareness of the need for and to increase giving to the college’s foremost funding priority through expendable and endowed support.
With a commitment of $50,000 or higher, spread out over five years, both endowed and expendable scholarships will be created and named at the donor’s behest. The annual expendable scholarship will be of immediate assistance to current students. The endowed scholarship will provide aid to students in perpetuity and may be designated for any one of three financial aid priorities: general need, merit academic achievement and leadership potential, and athletics, either for a specific sport or more broadly.

Scholarship Initiative How It Works With a commitment of $50,000 ($10,000 per
year), both an endowed and annual expendable scholarship will be created and named at the donor’s behest. • $25,000 will be utilized to provide an annual
$5,000 scholarship to a student in the donor’s honor through a membership in the Driscoll Society at the Scholars Level.
• $25,000 ($5,000 per year) will be used to establish a named endowed scholarship (projected to generate a $1,000 annual scholarship).Beginning in 2017, gifts of endowment to Holy Cross College will be managed through the Notre Dame Endowment.
Recognition and Stewardship • Membership in the Driscoll Society at the Scholars Level ($5,000) for five years. • Named endowed scholarship that will live on in perpetuity. • Personalized plaque displayed outside a North Hall residence room.
