"Toxic" seems to be one of those words that gets thrown around a lot lately So what exactly is a toxic relationship?

Some indications a relationship is toxic could be that you leave family gatherings feeling hurt, angry, or exhausted

Maybe, you feel consistently disrespected or feel a toll on your selfesteem over time. In some cases, you feel like you are not your best self when you are around these people, or maybe you feel as though you have to walk on eggshells.

How do we handle these relationships?

You have no control over someone else's behavior, but you can work on your own reaction to it

Setting healthy boundaries and using assertive communication will be key in these relationships

When going no-contact isn't an option that you're willing or able to choose, we must set emotional boundaries. Limit the time you are around them, if possible.

If you find yourself in conversation, work to not be emotionally hurt by their actions or words. It is not an easy task, but will get easier with practice Understand that they will say what they will, but work to not take it personally and refuse to engage in their toxicity, arguments, or drama. Focus your attention on healthy, loving family members

Sometimes it is hard to talk to family about family and this is where a good therapist can help. If you feel as though you need an unbiased third party to help you work through some difficult relationships, give us a call! We are here to help you!
