Located in the grandeur of Grauman’s Ballroom in the TCL Chinese Theatre 6, the Media Welcome Center featured an array of exhibits on Hollywood and interview opportunities from entertainment insiders for credentialed media.

Attending press hailed from all over the world – ranging from Mexico to the United Arab Emirates. News outlets included KABC-TV, KNBC, the Associated Press, KTLA, and Univision. Over 75 media representatives attended, representing outlets such as NBC News, Associated Press, Wire Image, KABC, ORF Austria, Dubai TV, DPA German Press Agency, TV Azteca, ABC TV Australia, and EPA Europe, just to name a few!

Fariba Kalantari to Lead Hollywood Chamber in 2016-2017

ariba Kalantari, DDS, the owner of Famous Hollywood Dental Care, has been elected to lead the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, beginning in April. She will be installed as Chair of the Board, along with other Chamber officers and directors at the Chamber’s 95th annual Installation & Lifetime Achievement Awards Luncheon, on Thursday, March 31st.

In addition, actress Marilu Henner will be presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Chamber.

The day will begin with a reception at 11:30 a.m. at the Universal Hilton Hotel, 555 Universal Hollywood Drive, followed by the luncheon at noon. An award-winning dentist with a 24-year track record, Kalantari is well respected in the field of dentistry. She was the youngest graduate in her class at Columbia University’s School of Dental and Oral Surgery. She completed her post-Doctoral residency at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital and has been awarded fellowships from the Academy of General Dentistry and the International Congress of Oral Implantologists.

In 2014, she received the L.A. Top Rated Doctor and Dentist Award. She is the past president of the California Dental Forum and of the IranianAmerican Dental Association. She was recently inducted as vice president of the Los Angeles Dental Society.

Kalantari has been a Chamber Board member since 2008. During that time, she has co-chaired the Chamber’s Healthcare Committee. She has also chaired the Chamber’s membership committee. She is the first dentist to lead the Hollywood Chamber.

erving as Chamber Board Chair this past year has been a powerful and enthralling education in the mathematics of volunteerism and “the sum being greater than its many parts.” It’s been an extraordinary lesson in participatory democracy.

More than ever, I stand reaffirmed in the inherent power of community engagement, and in awe of the passionate commitment of those who serve as the volunteer leaders of Hollywood’s business and residential stakeholders.

During this year, I’ve repeatedly witnessed visionary and courageous action from these local volunteers, our political leadership, and our non-profits. There are myriad ways that many of us “Hollywoodians” express respect and generosity on a daily basis.

The event kicked off with a special wax figure unveiling by Madame Tussauds of Oscar® winning actress Kate Winslet to celebrate the spirit of awards season. Variety, the entertainment industry’s leading publication for the most comprehensive and in-depth information, offered copies of their awards season edition of the magazine, while exhibitors such as the Hollywood Museum in the Historic Max Factor Building offered invitations to a VIP Oscar® Viewing Party for media.

Gubler spoke about the history of Hollywood and the current revitaliza-

tion taking place, including the more than $4-billion worth of investments in the pipeline. Emmy award-winning producer and creator of America’s Funniest Videos, Vin Di Bona, was on hand to talk about his latest projects on Animal Planet and his own connection to the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell of Hollywood’s 13th District discussed his efforts in making neighborhoods safer and opportunities for more affordable housing, as well as bringing jobs back to Los Angeles.

Actor, comedian, director, producer, philanthropist, Eugenio Derbez,

one of Mexico’s best-known stars, shared his thoughts on his lengthy film and television career, and talked about his upcoming film, “Miracles from Heaven”. Alan Puana, Director of Sales for Universal Studios Hollywood took interviews regarding the exciting plans for the new The Wizarding World of Harry Potter attraction at Universal Studios Hollywood, while Ana Martinez, Producer of the Hollywood Walk of Fame, shared her unique experiences about this famous landmark which recently celebrated its 55th Anniversary.

M·A·C Cosmetics offered complimentary makeup applications and gift bags while Top End Constructors, Hollywood Walk of Fame star makers, gave out pieces of official Walk of Fame terrazzo.

TCL Chinese Theatre IMAX and TCL Chinese 6 Theatres had a display which showcased their movie premieres, and the iconic forecourt of the hand and footprints, where celebrities have been imprinting their

hands and feet in cement since 1927.

Weary camera operators were treated to chair massages and gift bags from Bliss Spa located at the beautiful W Hollywood Hotel, while New York-based Hollywood Confections offered designs of delicate, handmade gourmet chocolates presented by celebrity Chef Kurt Ehrlich. The historic Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, home of the first Academy Awards in 1927, showcased photos of newly renovated rooms while offering press samples of their famous kale salad.

Proud suppliers of the Academy Awards® red carpet, 204 Events had a display highlighting their successful rental business and smothered the press in Southern hospitality, while Pink’s Hot Dogs served their delicious dogs while talking about their “Celebrity Wall of Fame” where stars have written about their love of Pink’s.

Hard Rock Cafe on Hollywood Blvd, long connected to the music world, enticed the press corps with their delicious Rock n’ Roll brownies while Gaelyn Whitley Keith, author of “The Father of Hollywood” shared insights on the early years of Hollywood and gave autographed books to the media. Tinhorn Flats Saloon & Grill, Hollywood’s only authentic western-themed restaurant, provided delicious spinach quesadillas while discussing their daily-fresh menu and one-of-a-kind décor while Sprinkles Cupcakes offered press samples of their unique treats, in delicately designed boxes while sharing their story on how they revolutionized the cupcake industry. Monster Energy Drinks kept the momentum strong with their famous beverages given out to all press and exhibitors throughout the event.

Your Community First Town Hall Held on Help Prosper: Register to Vote!

he first Town Hall meeting on the proposed Neighborhood Integrity Initiative was held last month at Emerson College’s new Hollywood campus. Sponsored by the Hollywood Studio District Neighborhood Council, the meeting drew a capacity crowd to the Feb. 23rd gathering.

Proponents of the initiative included columnist Jack Humphreville of Citywatch L.A. and attorney Grace Yoo, a former executive with the Korean American Coalition.

Spokespersons for the opposition included Hollywood Chamber President & CEO Leron Gubler, Mark Edwards of MRE Communications, and Luke Klipp, a resident of Los Feliz.

Gubler pointed out that general plan amendments, or “spot zones” as the initiative proponents call them, are often required of projects. He noted that the beautiful new Emerson College campus would not have been allowed had the initiative been in place, because the land had previously been zoned for industrial uses. Given a choice, he said most people would want the award-winning college campus versus an industrial building on the site.

He also stressed that the initiative simply goes too far. The moratorium would impact virtually all projects of any size in the City, including schools, hospitals, parks, Metro projects, airport expansion, harbor development,

and even a wetlands project in South Los Angeles.

One little known facet of the initiative is that it requires onsite parking for all restaurants, which would prevent older buildings without parking from being used for future restaurants.

This would result in many more empty buildings within the community.

Another aspect of the initiative is that it will subject every building permit to discretionary review. This would impact not only developers but also homeowners. It means that even fences, plumbing replacement and small home additions could be stopped by any neighbor who files an appeal.

He also pointed out that the initiative actually bans planning. It has a clause that does not allow any future community plans to increase density beyond what is currently built within a quarter mile of a project. That would freeze forever what is in place in the City and would not allow communities to designate areas for increased density. It would make it impossible to increase density around mass transit stations, thus negating the whole purpose of investing in mass transit.

“I’m leery of new initiatives because they almost always create more problems than they fix and this one is no exception,” concluded Gubler.

Even more important are the final days to register to vote. All registration material must be postmarked or submitted electronically by May 23rd for the Presidential Primaries and by October 24th for the General Election. This year, there are several important propositions and initiatives that could impact local businesses and the Hollywood community. Your votes on these issues are of utmost importance to the community as a whole. “We are fortunate enough to live in a country where voting is not only a right, but it is also a privilege,” said Nicole Shahenian, Vice President of Public Policy. “Register now to vote!”

Registering to vote has become easier and more readily accessible, with the option to submit a traditional paper application or to register online. Simply go to the California Secretary of State’s Voter Registration page at www.registertovote.ca.gov.

Paper applications are also available at any Department of Motor Vehicles office, some post offices, public libraries, and government offices. Applications can also be mailed to you by contacting your local county elections office or calling the Secretary of State’s number: (800) 345-VOTE(8683).

Hollywood Chamber Continues to Press for CEQA Reform C

ontinuing its efforts to press for reform of the California Environmental Quality Act, better known as CEQA, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce met with California State President pro Tempore Kevin de León in February.

“The CEQA law has done a lot of good in preserving California’s environment since it was approved during Ronald Reagan’s administration as Governor,” said Chamber President & CEO Leron Gubler. “However, CEQA abuse has grown in recent years as people have manipulated CEQA for purposes that have nothing to do with the environment.”

Gubler pointed out that CEQA-based lawsuits can delay or stop projects for years. “The Sunset-Gordon project is a great case in point,” he continued. “The original GerdingEdlen developers won court cases every step of the way, but the plaintiffs managed to delay the project for more than two years resulting in the developer losing the property. The system is broken when cases are allowed to drag on practically forever. That is a miscarriage of justice.”

The Chamber urged the senator to use his leadership post to press for change.

“The meeting was very worthwhile,” said Bill Roschen, who chaired the Chamber’s Major Businesses Task Force that worked on the effort. “I think the interest level from the Senator and his staff was very high. I believe he is open to opportunities to improve CEQA.” He noted the Chamber’s interest is not in gutting or voiding CEQA. Rather, the Chamber wants to see reforms that will create a more even-handed approach in dealing with CEQA applications.

Gubler said that an analysis of all published court decisions from 1997 to 2012 in which a development project’s Environmental Impact Report was challenged revealed that 59 percent of challenged projects were identified as either infill or greenfield and more than a third, 36 percent, of projects challenged involved public works projects. The most commonly-challenged types of projects involve public infrastructure and mixed-use developments.

In a well-documented case in San Francisco, anti-abortion activists filed a CEQA lawsuit against a Planned Parenthood clinic, alleging planners had not taken into account the environmental impacts – specifically the noise and traffic disruptions caused by the activists’ own protests.

The San Francisco Chronicle editorialized that “we can now add women’s health services to the toll of public goods that have been stymied by the California Legislature’s refusal to stand up to the interest groups who seem to think CEQA should remain carved in stone.”

The amount of CEQA abuse has finally begun to get attention in Sacramento. Last year, in the report “California High Housing Costs Cause & Consequences”, the California Legislative Analyst Office (LAO) cited CEQA as a major impediment to building enough housing in the state. The LAO said that CEQA is a factor in California’s lack of housing supply, which leads to higher

housing costs that burden working families and low income residents, and serve as a drag on our economy.

“Obtaining reasonable reforms to CEQA has been a major priority of our Chamber for several years. We look forward to working with Senator de León and other legislators to achieve that end,” concluded Gubler.

Chamber Delegation to Meet with Local Members of Congress to Advocate Hollywood Interests

A

delegation of representatives from the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will visit Capitol Hill April 25th to 28th to advocate issues of importance to Hollywood and the greater Los Angeles region. The Chamber’s delegation with be joining forces with Access DC, a group of over 200 members of the greater L.A. business community, led by Mayor Eric Garcetti. The group will be in Washington to educate local members of Congress on such issues as transportation and infrastructure funding for Los Angeles, housing and homelessness initiatives, education and work-force development, and other issues integral to the regional economy. This year’s Hollywood Chamber delegation to DC will include: incoming Chair of the Hollywood Chamber, Fariba Kalantari, DDS, boardmember Beth Marlis of the Musicians Institute; boardmember Donelle Dadigan of the Hollywood Museum; boardmember Susan Cabral-Ebert of IATSE Local 706 Makeup and Hairstylists; and Chamber Vice-President of Public Policy, Nicole Shahenian.

Bankers Get Tour of Hollywood

“The Chamber’s annual advocacy trip offers our Chamber members the unique opportunity to meet with their elected officials on the national level to discuss issues of importance to the Hollywood Business Community, and to demonstrate the overall importance of Hollywood as part of the greater Los Angeles regional efforts to get the L.A. economy moving again,” stated Leron Gubler, Hollywood Chamber President & CEO. “With so much at stake for the business community in Hollywood and communities throughout Southern California, it is important that we can show Congress that Hollywood is serious in its efforts to bring about much-needed economic recovery to our businesses.”

Fifty bankers attending the National Interagency Conference in Los Angeles in February received a VIP walking tour of Hollywood, led by Hollywood Chamber President & CEO Leron Gubler. The conference drew bankers from across the country to discuss the Community Reinvestment Act, which requires banks to assist borrowers and finance projects in all segments of communities. A “Hurrah for Hollywood” tour was arranged for bankers wanting to learn more about reinvestment in Hollywood and West Hollywood. Gubler pointed out projects that have helped to revitalize Hollywood and those with affordable housing included as part of the projects. It was a great opportunity to meet with financiers who provide the capital for projects such as those underway in Hollywood.

he Hollywood Chamber has been involved with the East Hollywood BID (EHBID) since its founding and is currently helping to establish the Hollywood Western BID The East Hollywood BID (EHBID), founded in 2007 and covering the Vermont Avenue corridor of East Hollywood, has been consistently providing services to improve their district. In addition to the projects mentioned above, the EHBID has made progress coordinating with Metro to develop landscaped medians within their district.

Efforts for establishing the Hollywood Western BID are underway, with the steering committee having met and sent out all of the petitions to businesses in the districts. The Hollywood Western BID would cover Hollywood Boulevard between Van Ness and Edgemont, and also Western Boulevard between Franklin and Santa Monica Boulevard.

Property-based Business Improvement Districts (BID) are self-imposed and self-governed benefit assessment districts that finance enhanced services. By collecting assessment fees from the businesses located within the district, BIDs are able to fund several projects to help clean and maintain the beauty of each neighborhood. Some of these projects include trash pickup, graffiti removal, street and bus stop cleaning, planting trees and flowers, and even repairing damaged sidewalks. Chamber Committees Focus on Issues T

he Hollywood Chamber of Commerce continues to focus its efforts to facilitate communication between member businesses and the Hollywood community, and to empower the voice of our members and keep them informed on important legislative and economic development issues in Hollywood. Here is what several of the Chamber committees achieved this month.

The Entertainment, Arts, and Media (TEAM) Hollywood committee promotes the Hollywood brand with the intention of preserving Hollywood’s homegrown entertainment industries. The committee meeting last month was sponsored by William Raleigh from I.A.T.S.E. Local 33 and featured President of the Public Works Board and Chief Liaison to the Mayor’s Office of Film and Television Production Kevin James. Commissioner James provided an update to members regarding the progress being made by the city for the film industry. He informed the

group of numerous achievements his team has been able to achieve, including adjusting fee structures for filming locations and helping to increase film production here in Los Angeles.

The Legislative Action Committee met last month and heard presentations regarding several ballot initiatives and Senate Bills (SB). In addition to learning more about SB 270, banning single-use carry out bags, the committee heard updates about SB 380, regarding the Aliso Canyons natural gas well, and the California Public Education Facilities Bond Initiative, which will be on the ballot during the General Election on November 8th. The Committee continues to monitor initiatives and pieces of legislation at the local, state and federal levels, and works to identify, support or oppose legislation that may impact our local businesses.

The Healthcare Committee met for a working lunch and made significant progress on tackling several big projects. In addition to discussing the

details for a section dedicated to Healthcare at the upcoming Hollywood Business Expo, the committee took a big step towards finalizing the Hollywood Healthcare Resource Guide, and also began preparing for the Healthy Hollywood Event this Spring. The committee is working to create promotional and networking opportunities and advocates for Chamber members in health and wellness-related businesses. This productive meeting started off the year for the Healthcare Committee on a strong and positive note.

Nicole Shahenian, the Vice President of Public Policy at the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, was among the 29 chamber executives to graduate in February from Academy, a professional development program presented by the Western Association of Chamber Executives (W.A.C.E.). Academy is an interactive 3-day (three year) training program on chamber management essentials designed for today’s chamber executives and staff professionals. “We congratulate all of the graduates and their chambers for having the vision to invest in professional development,” said W.A.C.E. President Dave Kilby. During the three-year Academy program, graduates participated in 18 three-hour classes and must successfully complete additional independent study outside of the classroom. W.A.C.E is an association of chamber of commerce executives and staff professionals designed to promote and enhance professional development. With approximately 850 members from seventeen Western states and Canada, W.A.C.E. is the largest regional association of chamber of commerce executives.

Hollywood Walk Of Fame Committee Now Accepting Nominations For Year 2017 T

he Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is now accepting nominations for the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Deadline for submission is on Tuesday, May 31st, at 12 noon to be considered in June. All nominations will be considered in the annual Walk of Fame Committee meeting to be held in June. The Walk of Fame Committee will make selections for the year 2017.

“Anyone can nominate their favorite celebrity, including a fan. We are constantly asked about the process.

Nominating someone for a star is as simple as can be! All we ask for is a completed nomination application and a commitment to sponsor the star should their celebrity be selected,” said Ana Martinez, Producer of the Walk of Fame ceremonies. “Each year, we receive an average of 300 nominations. The Walk of Fame Committee will select an elite group of personalities to become our newest Walk of Famers and continue to help make Hollywood the most famous community in the world!”

Nomination applications can be obtained at the official website for the Hollywood Walk of Fame at www.walkoffame.com or by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to: Walk of Fame Committee c/o Ana Martinez, Hollywood Chamber of Commerce 7018 Hollywood Boulevard, 2nd Floor Hollywood, CA 90028 The Walk of Fame categories include Motion Pictures,

Television, Radio, Recording, and Live Theatre/Live Performance. The Walk of Fame Committee will select approximately 20-24 names for insertion into the worldfamous Walk. Whether nominating an individual or group, the sponsor must submit a photo, a bio and the nominee’s qualifications as well as a list of contributions to the community and civic-oriented participation. A letter of agreement from the nominee or his/her management must be included with the application. Posthumous nominations have a five year waiting period.

The Hollywood Walk of Fame does not encourage or endorse online campaigns for fundraising for a star prior to selection. Such initiatives do not impact the selection process for a star on the Walk of Fame. The committee does not accept signatures, phone calls, e-mails, or any form of written or online petitions for a nomination.

Beware of all online petitions that collect your email address to no avail. Only official Walk of Fame applications are accepted. “We encourage that you read and fully understand the nomination and selection process on our website www.walkoffame.com,” said Martinez.

Chamber Announces Premier Investors Club for 2016

he Hollywood Chamber is proud to announce the 2016 Premier Investors Club members! The PI Club members are businesses who have made a commitment to supporting various Chamber events throughout the year and have secured their placement and promotion for the upcoming fiscal year.
