more on the issues Hollywood is grappling with to create a livable and sustainable community. Entitled “Why Hollywood Matters – Assessing the State of Hollywood’s Re-emergence”, the speakers left attendees with a lot to consider.

It kicked off with the “premiere” of a new video entitled “Hollywood: Find Yourself Here!” produced by Greg Kasunich of Modern Genius. The fourminute video will be posted on the Hollywood Chamber’s website, HollywoodChamber.net.

Chairs of the conference were Li Wen of Gensler and Dwayne Gathers of Gathers Strategies. Keynoters for the conference were Victor Coleman of Hudson Pacific Properties and Hamet Watt of Upfront Ventures.

Coleman, the Chairman of the Board and CEO of Hudson Pacific, said that Hollywood’s second act is well underway. He noted that $5-billion in investment has either been announced or built since 2000. He pointed out that office vacancies are near historic lows and rents are reaching new highs.

Silicon Valley tech firms are saying that they need a presence in Southern California because this is the entertainment and media capital of the world.

These firms are locating in Playa Vista, Hollywood and West L.A., primarily because of access to talent, said Coleman.

He shared a startling statistic that Millennials (those 18 to 35 years old) make up 35 percent of Hollywood’s population, which is greater than any other area of Los Angeles County, including West L.A. (29 percent) and Santa Monica (24 percent).

Hamet Watt, Venture Partner at Upfront Ventures, explained that Los Angeles is the third largest technology eco-system in the United States, but the fastest growing. Driving this is the convergence of Technology and Entertainment. He bet that Entertainment would have an impact on Technology and that Technology would transform Entertainment. The next wave of development will be all about new platforms.

L.A. is well-positioned because it graduates more engineers than any other area of the U.S. The biggest thing that we could do for our region is to encourage our engineering talent to remain here.

The first panel, facilitated by Wen, discussed quality of life issues. They were asked what it is about Hollywood that positions it well for the future. Tori Kjer of the Trust for Public Land said density was what makes Hollywood unique and walkable. Kerry Morrison of the Hollywood Property Owners Alliance cited location, brand and authenticity as Hollywood’s unique qualities. She said that an older generational mindset doesn’t understand the Hollywood of the 21st century that is embracing the urban lifestyle. Senate President Pro Tempore Addresses Hollywood Chamber he Hollywood Chamber held its first T “State of the State Luncheon” with Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de León on July 10th at Paramount Pictures.

Senator De León represents a portion of Hollywood.

Sen. de León addressed Chamber members, highlighting issues for which he is advocating that will impact Hollywood and Southern California.

Attendees and sponsors received updates on the implementation of AB1839, and information on how to make the most of this newly increased tax incentive for filming in California.

The Senator also provided insight on solar energy and thoughts on controlling price hikes for gasoline, as well as information on transportation and the planned

s many of us are enjoying the longer days and activities of summer like outdoor A dining, the beach, perhaps a vacation; I’m reminded of what has made travels to other cities so memorable.

Granted, some of the world’s most beloved attractions and destinations get very crowded during peak travel season. Some might have street vendors hawking their wares, like the Great Wall of China, Sacré-Cœur in Paris, Charles Bridge in Prague, temples in Kyoto, or on the streets of Manhattan. Not to mention the myriad of street performers in subways, and plazas all around the world.

I’ve often enjoyed the tastes of street food, culture and small items I might find in these places. However, whether I’m bringing my passport along, (or not) the last thing I want to experience as a visitor is to be overwhelmed by noise and massive crowds, hassled by street vendors, and heckled to purchase trinkets or tours. There are some places that I’ll never visit again because of this problem.

Turning my tourist’s viewfinder to Hollywood, I imagine the potential scene of one of the world’s most famous sidewalks on an August afternoon (or night) populated by tens of thousands of visitors, and dozens of street vendors. But, it’s an impossible scene. Hollywood Boulevard’s tourist crowds on an already jam-packed sidewalk with unregulated costumed characters, “fly-by night” tour operators, illegal CD “vendors”, plus multiple sidewalk vendors on the Walk of Fame?! It’s a recipe for chaos.

Even more concerning, is how sidewalk vendors impact the existing brick and mortar retail stores and restaurants in Hollywood (paying rent, business taxes, health care for workers, minimum wage, utilities, etc.) already catering to our tourists, visitors and residents. Shouldn’t these established businesses be protected from being suddenly undercut and undersold by those who set-up shop on the sidewalk, without paying overhead?

We’ve now arrived at a fork in the road, as (after four recent community hearings) the City Council is poised to consider implementing a sidewalk-vending program in the city of Los Angeles. I’m supportive of those who are interested in making a living for an honest day’s work, attaining a business license, following the health code, and selling their wares according to a fair and (hopefully) enforceable system.

We all know that LA is not a monolithic, “one-size fits all” city; it’s very diverse, with unique neighborhoods and business districts. But, not every part of LA can (or should) support street vending. Certain areas of the city need a “carve-out” or an exemption from the street-vending ordinance. To some extent, the LA city council agrees that not all locations can support vending, because in June, they approved an ordinance that states sidewalk vendors cannot sell in parks and on beaches. They’re considered to be “urban sanctuaries”. That’s a great first step.

The Hollywood Chamber supports that LA’s Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) be allowed to determine if sidewalk vending makes sense for their district or not, by allowing for an opt-out clause in the ordinance.

The kiosk vendors on Olvera Street are a beloved LA institution, the street performers on Santa Monica’s 3rd Street Promenade, food trucks at LACMA, vendors on the Venice Boardwalk are great, and an ice cream cart on a street corner is a welcome sight on a hot day. When street vending “works”, it works beautifully.

Hollywood’s tourists are arriving in ever-greater numbers seeking a world-class tourist destination. Businesses invest and relocate here because the future of Hollywood is bright and exciting.

21st century Hollywood is enjoying a period of great transformation, and a prosperous and strong local economy. Let’s continue this momentum by supporting both our local businesses and our millions of visitors (who converge, inform and support one another), and allow our BIDs to have the option to exempt themselves (or not) from local sidewalk vendors.

to bring additional stakeholders to the community.

Dixon Slingerland of the Youth Policy Institute spoke of the need to get Hollywood’s youth into training programs to give them the skills needed to fit into the new Hollywood, while Ellen Zaman of Children’s Hospital noted that there are currently 500 open positions at Hollywood’s three major hospitals that need to be filled with qualified individuals.

Derrick Moore of Avison Young who specializes in Downtown L.A. urged Hollywood to market to its strengths and to develop more green space, using the outdoors as an extension of our living space.

The second panel, moderated by Gathers, focused on economic development opportunities in Hollywood and featured some of the new players who have entered the Hollywood community. Lina Chen of Nix Hydra Games, said her firm chose Los Angeles as a home because this is where people dream. Hollywood is the center where people are drawn and is a source of talent for her firm.

Michelle Kempner of BuzzFeed Motion Pictures noted that BuzzFeed wanted to build a studio in the old

Hollywood style, and there was no place better to build than in Hollywood. They are currently located at the former Academy Museum site. Michele Sizemore, who works for Vince, a contemporary clothing design firm which originated in the Wilshire area, said that when the company went public, they were drawn to Hollywood because it is a magnet for likeminded creative people.

Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell, who kicked off the conference said, “Hollywood is not an abstract. It is a oneof-a kind place. It is a community we all know and love. We are humming along as never before and hitting on all cylinders.”

People attending the conference were given copies of the always popular Hollywood Economic Development Update, which lists the status of 82 development projects in Hollywood.

They were also the first to receive the new Hollywood Business and Community Profile, providing detailed demographics on Hollywood. Both publications will be posted on the Hollywood Chamber website, HollywoodChamber.net.

Beacon Economics Issues Hollywood Trends Report s many people know, it is difficult to A obtain good statistical and demographic data for Hollywood. Most data is only collected and reported on a city-bycity basis. Since Hollywood is only a community within the City of Los Angeles, it is often challenging to extract the data for this community.

The Board of Directors of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, recognizing the need for good information, commissioned Beacon Economics, one of Southern California’s most recognized and leading providers of economic research, forecasting, industry analysis and data services to put together a report for Hollywood.

The report, entitled Economic Trends in Hollywood: 2015 was issued in June.

It has been placed on the Chamber’s website, HollywoodChamber.net, and is available on the “Members Only” section of the website as a member benefit.

tion on demographics, employment, construction activity, business activity and tourism, the retail real estate market, the office real estate market and on residential real estate. Information was collected based on the boundaries identified by the City of Los Angeles as the Hollywood Community Plan Area.

Beacon Economics saw several strong indicators of economic growth and development in Hollywood. They reported that

employment and wage growth have been strong across a wide variety of industries with significant improvements occurring in several high-wage subsectors. They noted that residential real estate prices and commercial real estate rents are rising, and increased business activity and tourism coupled with a strong real estate market, have been parlayed into increased construction activity in the area.

“It has been a real pleasure working with Beacon Economics,” said Chamber President & CEO Leron Gubler. “For the first time, Hollywood has the kind of data which will be helpful to firms and businesses thinking of relocating or opening here, and our local businesses will have the information that will guide them in making decisions. The Chamber is pleased to have been able to provide this information.”

It’s Official: LA Raises Minimum Wage to $15.00

Hollywood Chamber Voices Concerns as City’s Economic Development Committee Considers Legalizing Sidewalk Vending in Los Angeles

Beginning July 1, 2016, the wage increase will be rolled out in phased yearly increases as follows: July 1, 2016 $10.50 July 1, 2017 $12.00 July 1, 2018 $13.25 July 1, 2019 $14.25 July 1, 2020 $15.00 The wage increase provides an additional year for small businesses with 25 or fewer employees to reach the $15.00 wage. The modified schedule for small business is as follows: July 1, 2017 $10.50 July 1, 2018 $12.00 July 1, 2019 $13.25 July 1, 2020 $14.25 July 1, 2021 $15.00 Additionally, beginning July 1, 2022, the minimum wage will increase annually based on the average Consumer Price Index over the previous 20 years.

Beginning with the Mayor’s Minimum Wage Increase proposal last Labor Day, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has been continually active in ensuring that the business community had a voice in the Minimum Wage discussions. The Hollywood Chamber continues to call on the City to take steps to protect our small businesses and nonprofit agencies as the increases take place.

Recognizing that the City’s steep wage rate increase will be a hardship for many of our small businesses, the Hollywood Chamber will be holding a series of seminars in the near future aimed at helping small businesses survive the recent myriad local and State changes in employment law. throughout the City to solicit input from Angelenos on a possible program to legalize sidewalk vending in Los Angeles.

The Hollywood Chamber was on hand at each of the hearings to oppose any “one-size fits all approach” for the legalization of sidewalk vending in Los Angeles. “Hollywood Boulevard is the most famous street in the world and is home to some of LA’s most crowded sidewalks. With tens-of-thousands of visitors each day, Hollywood Boulevard is already struggling with an overabundance of mobile food-carts, cd-vendors, street characters, and tour bus solicitors and cannot afford the increase in the number of street vendors that legalization of sidewalk vending would undoubtedly bring,” stated Nicole Shahenian, Chamber Vice President of Public Policy.

In addition to the public safety concerns with the legalization of street vending, the Chamber expressed concerns about the impacts of a city wide ordinance on Hollywood’s brick and mortar establishments. Shahenian explained, “Nearly all of Hollywood and East Hollywood lie within City approved Business Improvement Districts (BIDs), where property owners have voluntarily assessed

themselves to maintain streets and sidewalks, trash cans, parking spots, restrooms, and provide security. Mobile vendors located within a Business Improvement District would unfairly reap all the benefits of the property owner’s improvements, without being required to pay the same assessment fees.”

The Chamber is asking its members to encourage the City to provide an “optout clause” for Business Improvement Districts. While street vending may be welcomed in some areas of the city, it is not appropriate in all areas and the City policy should account for that. Any Citywide policy on sidewalk vending should at a minimum, allow for an opt-out clause for Business Improvement Districts within the City- where property owners pay an additional assessment to keep their streets clean and safe.

Hollywood Ed was established in 2009 when the Hollywood Chamber along with the Hollywood Property Owners Alliance (HPOA) brought together a working group of over 20 Hollywood trade schools dedicated to branding Hollywood as an education destination with ties to the entertainment industry and the arts. Groundbreaking Held for State-of-the Art Office Tower t a ceremony held last month attendA ed by Mayor Eric Garcetti and numerous other City officials, ground was broken by Hudson Pacific Properties for the Icon, a landmark office tower being built at Sunset-Bronson Studios.

The 14-story, class-A tower will have 320,000-sq.ft. of office space and is destined to truly become an “icon” for Hollywood. In development for several years, the original design was much more traditional until community residents and stakeholders asked Hudson to design something more in keeping with Hollywood’s personality.

Among the features of the project are: innovative design, state-of-the art systems, LEED Gold certification, 25,000sq.ft. floor plates, 14-ft. ceilings, 45 ft. column-free spans, floor-to-ceiling windows, and such onsite amenities as outdoor spaces and terraces with views.

Delivery of the building is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2016.

At the urging of the Hollywood Chamber and the Hollywood Theatre Community, City Councilmembers Mitch O’Farrell and Tom LaBonge, spearheaded the efforts to install permanent signage that would officially name this area as Hollywood Theater Row. “Hollywood Theatre Row is a hub of creative energy that contributes positively not just to the local culture, but to the local economy as well,” said Councilmember O’Farrell. “We have seen the positive effect of live theatre not just in Hollywood, but across the city at large. In this fiscal year alone, local theatres leveraged over $2 million into the local economy.”

Chamber Publishes Groundbreaking Directory

Take Advantage of Youth Employment Program

he Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has published two groundbreaking new T ollywood businesses have a great business publications – the Hollywood Guide and the Hollywood Business & H opportunity this summer to help Community Profile. The publications mark a major shift for the Chamber, which youth in the community gain valuable changed publishers for the first time in more than 20 years. The new publisher is Chamber Marketing Partners, Inc. “We are very pleased with this new relationship and the new look and feel of the directory,” said Chamber President & CEO Leron Gubler. “We have tried some new approaches which should really benefit our members.”

A total of 25,000 pieces were printed, which included 10,000 copies of the Guide and Profile in a combined book, and another 15,000 copies of just the Profile. Besides sending copies to all Chamber members of the combined book, another 6,000 copies were sent to Hollywood residents. More than 5,000 copies of the Profile were mailed to entertainment and tech companies throughout the Los Angeles region and additional distributions are being planned.

Of particular interest is the “pull-out” Hollywood Business & Community Profile.

This is the first time that a high-quality demographic publication has been produced for Hollywood, with easy-to-read charts covering the areas of population, tourism and business statistics. Because Hollywood is not its own city, it has been very difficult to access data that is applicable to this world-famous community.

The Chamber relied on data provided by Beacon Economics, Nielsen 2014 PopFacts, and by the Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board.

“We believe that our publications are going to be the “go-to” documents when people want information on Hollywood,” said Gubler. “With the data that we have provided, these books become ‘keepsakes’ that people will hold on to and refer back to, which should be very beneficial to our advertisers.”

Gubler noted that all Chamber members received complimentary listings in the directory. An electronic version of the directory is available on the Chamber website.

According to the Youth Policy Institute (YPI), businesses can participate in the Youth Employment Program, also referred to as the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP), that provides youth with up to 120 hours of subsidized internships. YPI has the funds to help underwrite the costs for up to 600 student interns. All youth in the program will have completed 20 hours of training in the following areas: work readiness, resume building, mock interviews, financial literacy – budgets, bank accounts, savings, credit; and career exploration – including secondary and vocational training. Once the training is complete, the youth are placed in 100-hour internships. Business and nonprofit partners in both the public and private sectors provide worksites to host young adults and to provide a learning environment, mentoring, and skill building.
