The KZNCU Umpires started a new journey from September 2022, introducing two new subcommittees: a Training Committee and an Appointments Committee. After hosting two successful Level 1 umpiring courses, a third is being planned.
Level 1 Umpires Course - Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium
On 15 November 2022, KZNCU together with the KZN Department of Sports, Arts & Culture as well as eThekwini Municipality and Metros, hosted a Umpire’s level 1 course at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium The course was presented by Sbongakonke Shabangu (CSA accredited umpires trainer), Muhammed Jooma (CSA accredited umpires trainer) and Kershan Moodley (KZNCU umpires administrator).
The course featured 5 guest speakers, who gave a discourse on umpiring. The guest speakers present were, Nishaan Sewkumar (KZN Department of Sports, Arts and Culture), Babalo Gcuma (CSA National First-Class Umpire as well as CSA Umpires Umpire of the year), Mthokozisi Shezi (Former Proteas and Hollywoodbets Dolphins Player and current umpire), Sagren Naidoo (Former Cricket South Africa Match Referee) and Kugan Subrayan (President of eThekwini Metro Cricket Union).
The course was highly successful having 13 candidates completing the exam and all 13 passed.
Level 1 Umpires Course - Kwandengezi
The KZN Umpires training committee took great strides to introduce umpiring to the greater KZN region. The course was held on 18 November 2022 at Botate Primary School in Kwadengezi. A total of 9 candidates attended the course, and currently all 9 are actively umpiring within the KZNCU leagues. The course was presented by Sbongakonke Shabangu and assisted by Sandile Dube This was a major success in our training and recruitment process as we currently have umpires officiating in the KZNCU Castle Women’s Premier and Promotion Leagues.
Level 2 Umpires Course - Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium
The KZN Umpires training committee hosted a level 2 umpires’ course on 27 and 28 February 2023. Active umpires within the KZNCU Castle Club leagues, who have a Level 1 qualification, attended. This course was a huge stepping stone for Sbongakonke Shabangu and Kershan Moodley, as it was the first level 2 course they have presented in their respective positions.
A total of 7 candidates entered the course and the pass rate was 93%
Level 1 Scorers Course - Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium
On 11 March 2023 the KZN Cricket Scorers Association held a refresher course for the Premier League Club scorers at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium.
