WHAT IS NEURODIVERGENCY? Everyone’s brain works in a unique way.

Neurodivergent is an umbrella term to describe individuals whose neurotype, or brain wiring, differs significantly from the general population (which is described by the term neurotypical).

INSIGHTS

Because of neuroplasticity, or the ability of our brains to change over time, a person’s neurotype depends on both nature and nurture.

Some forms of neurodivergence are biological, like dyslexia, ADHD or autism, which are present at birth. On the other hand, major life events like those that cause PTSD or traumatic brain injuries can cause a person’s neurotype to change from neurotypical to neurodivergent at any age.

THE NEURODIVERSITY MOVEMENT Some neurodivergent traits are highly celebrated in our culture, like creativity. Others, like sensitivity to heat or cold, can be frustrating to deal with. Viewing these traits altogether - while having fun playing BINGO - is a great way to develop a more nuanced AND neutral perspective on neurodivergence!
