SENSORY ENVIRONMENTS

Many neurodivergent folks struggle with sensory processing issues, whether they are hypersensitive or hyposensitive. The “symptoms” of ADHD and autism that are most frequently noticed in children are often natural reactions to sensory triggers in the environment. For those of us who are late diagnosed, we may have learned to tune out sensory discomfort due to a lack of awareness of what sensory issues are and how to communicate with others about them. A lot of us “tough it out” when we leave home, only to collapse into burnout when we get back. Here’s how to change that pattern.

Our ability to cope with sensory issues is mediated by our access to material resources & the social hierarchies that determine who has control over the sensory environment in any given place. Here are some items you can keep with you to soothe your nervous system in a world that is becoming louder and brighter every day. Be mindful of others when using your personal items, and make sure you are in a safe environment before you use items like noisecancelling headphones that can limit your awareness of your surroundings.
