REFRESHER: SENSORY PROFILES Everyone has a unique “sensory profile” that dictates how sensitive our nervous system is to information perceived through the senses: vision, hearing, touch, taste, and smell.

The spectrum of sensitivity has two extremes:

hyposensitivity and hypersensitivity.

Neurodivergent people often experience the world in terms of these extremes due to sensory processing differences.

If you are hypersensitive, you may find that your body over-responds to sensory input, making it easy to become over-stimulated. Many people cope with hypersensitivity through sensory avoidance.

Topic of the Month: HYPERSENSITIVITY AND SENSORY AVOIDANCE

SENSORY AVOIDANCE: PROS AND CONS One common myth surrounding neurodivergence is the idea that autistic people struggle to make eye contact due to social difficulties.

However, a qualitative study shows that eye contact aversion can actually be a coping strategy that helps autistic people reduce stress levels resulting from the hyperarousal of their amygdala when meeting another person’s gaze. Similarly, neurodivergent folks can develop a natural tendency to avoid sensory stimulation without realizing. For example, they might avoid loud places because of “bad vibes” without realizing the noise level is the primary trigger.

While avoiding sensory stress can provide comfort in the short-term, there are consequences. Without exposure to sensory input, your level of tolerance may decrease (this was a commonly reported experience for a lot of people after after the COVID-19 lockdowns).

The sensory chart on the following page is a tool that can be used to identify sensory likes and dislikes. When you have awareness of your own sensory profile, you can use your treasures as coping tools to deal with your triggers instead of avoiding them.
