Die Beiträge in der vorliegenden Festschrift greifen diese Ausweitung musikwissenschaftlicher Forschungszugänge auf. Dazu wird die Rolle von Medien und Geschichtskonstruktionen in unterschiedlichen Kontexten befragt.

Kritische Grundlagendebatten über Fragen der Musikhistoriographie erfreuen sich in den letzten Jahren bemerkenswerter Beliebtheit. Michele Calella ( * 1967) ist seit 2010 ­Uni­versitätsprofessor für Neuere Historische ­Musikwissenschaft an der Universität Wien. Forschungsschwerpunkte sind u. a. Musiktheorie und Musikauffassung im Spätmitte­lalter und Neuzeit, Aspekte der musikalischen Autorschaft sowie Theorie der Musikwissenschaft.

Nikolaus Urbanek ( * 1976) promovierte über Adornos Beethoven-Fragmente und ist seit 2010 Universitätsassistent am Institut für Musikwissenschaft der Universität Wien.

On May 3, 1810, George Gordon, Lord Byron, swam like the mythic Leander from Sestos on the European side of the Hellespont to Abydos on the Asian shore. The hero of his poem Don Juan has lived in “feminine ­disguise” in the sultan’s harem for more than a century. Nineteen ­international contributors explore ­historical conceptions of the Ottoman harem and seraglio in British, French and South East European sources from the late seventeenth to the ­nineteenth centuries.

Michael Hüttler ( * 1966) has been conducting research for Don Juan Archiv Wien since 2001. Since 2010 he has been head of the then ­founded HOLLITZER Verlag.

Emily M. N. Kugler ( * 1979) is Assistant Professor of ­British Literature at Howard ­University. She is currently working on p ­ rojects focused on ­women, slavery, and imperial networks.

Hans Ernst Weidinger ( * 1949) studied law, classical languages, theatre studies and art history in Vienna and founded the Don Juan Archiv Wien in 1987.

Wie (a-)sozial ist die Musik?

MusikerInnen in Mitteleuropa ­verhalten sich per se nicht sozialer oder asozialer als Angehörige anderer künstlerischer Berufe. Sie beweisen in Teams und Kollektiven (und bereits während der Ausbildung) bei allem strukturell vorgegebenen Konkurrenzverhalten bemerkenswerten „Korpsgeist“ und oft auch Solidarität.

Ist bei ihnen eine besondere Affinität zur Wohltätigkeit oder Bosheit zu ­diagnostizieren? Fest steht: Durch ­Musik wird per se weder „der Mensch“ noch „die Welt“ besser – Letztere aber immerhin lebenswerter. Selbst maliziöse Tonkünste können niemanden „verderben“ (an diesem Punkt ­haben sich ältere philosophische ­Auffassungen als ordnungspolitisch gut gemeinte Irrtümer erwiesen).

Musik steht und fällt jedenfalls in b ­ esonderer Weise im bzw. mit dem s­ ozialen Gefüge. Es erscheint nicht müßig, dies immer wieder unter die Lupe zu nehmen. Österreichische Musikzeitschrift Wie (a-)sozial ist die Musik?

Die Dirigentin Geschlechterkampf im Orchestergraben?

Dompteur, Dämon, Despot – wie kein zweiter steht der Dirigentenberuf für musikalische Machtausübung, die ­traditionell mit Männlichkeit assoziiert wird. Dass im Pantheon und selbst in der Mittelklasse der Frackträger für Frauen kaum Platz bleibt, ist ein Indiz dafür, wie beharrlich stereotype Geschlechterrollen auch in der ­„klassischen“ Musikkultur die kollek­ tive Wahrnehmung prägen. Das Bild des Befehlshabers über orchestrale Klang-„Körper“ ist dabei nicht das einzige Beispiel greller Zuschreibungen – am anderen Ende der Skala steht „die Diva“: opulent gekleidet, ­exzentrisch und verführerisch im ­Rampenlicht, dient sie als Projek­ tionsfläche erotischer Phantasien und B ­ egierden. Die ÖMZ analysiert ­Anachronismen und würdigt ­Individuen, deren Karrieren aus dem eingeübten Rollenspiel ausscheren.

25 anni di musica a Lamole.

Una stagione musicale estiva chiantigiana.

Padre Valente Gori, l’ultimo Maestro di Cappella presso la chiesa della SS.ma Annunziata a Firenze, fondò un piccolo gruppo polifonico, ­denominato Pro Musica Firenze, e dette vita a un progetto musicale a Lamole (Comune di Greve in Chianti), assieme al suo fratello Don Luigi Gori, parroco del paese, e al Maestro Riccardo Risaliti. Questo progetto, che nel 2013 ha celebrato il suo 25° anniversario, permette a tantissimi musicisti nazionali ed internazionali di esibirsi con musiche di tutte le epoche, svolgendo anche un ruolo importantissimo per la promozione di giovani artisti di tutto il mondo.

Die ersten Jahrzehnte des 19. Jahrhunderts

Als Folge von Eroberung, Säkularisierung und Bedeutungsverlust wurden zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts in Salzburg gewohnte Verhältnisse tiefgreifend umgestaltet. Entsprechend nachhaltig waren die Konsequenzen auch für das kulturelle Leben der Stadt, dessen musikalische Seite ­bislang nur lückenhaft erforscht war.

Die Beiträge beschäftigen sich unter anderem mit dem allmählichen Ent­ stehen des Mozartkultes in der Stadt sowie dem fortgeführten geistlichen Musikleben nach der Säkularisierung.

Carnuntum als einzigartige historische Stätte steht für sich selbst. Und dennoch wäre es ohne die Menschen, die aus den verschiedensten Berufsbereichen kommen, nicht das, was es heute repräsentiert. Die Melange aus Wissenschaft, modernen Vermittlungsmethoden und Identifikation der regionalen Bevölkerung mit ihrem historischen Erbe macht vielleicht oder sogar sehr wahrscheinlich den Reiz von Carnuntum aus.

Dieses Buch fängt die Vielfalt von ­Carnuntum ein. Insgesamt wurden 27 Personen ausgewählt, deren Bezug zur archäolo­gischen Stätte sehr ­unterschiedlich ist. Die Bandbreite ­erstreckt sich von Handwerkern über Wissenschafter bis zu Förderern und politischen E ­ ntscheidungsträgern.

Die vielen ­Perspektiven erzeugen ein Bild von Carnuntum, das es bisher noch nicht gab.

The first volume focuses on the period between 1756 and 1808, the era of W. A. Mozart (1756 –1791) and Sultan Selim III (1761–1808).These historical personalities, whose life-spans overlap, were towering figures of their time: Mozart as an extraordinary composer and Selim III as both a politician and a composer.

Inspired by the structure of opera, the forty-four contributions of Volume I are arranged in eight sections, entitled Ouverture, Prologue, Acts I–V and Epilogue. The Ouverture includes the opening speeches of diplomats, politicians, and scholars as well as a memorial text for the “Genius of Opera”, Turkish prima donna Leyla Gencer (1928–2008). The Prologue, “The Stage of Politics”, features texts by distinguished historians who give an historical overview of the Ottoman Empire and Europe in the late eighteenth century, from both Turkish and Austrian points of view. Act I features texts concerning “Diplomacy and Theatre”, and Act II takes the reader to “Europe South,West and North”. Act III has contributions concerning theatre in “Central Europe”, while Act IV deals with “Mozart” and the world of the seraglio. The story of this long-forgotten connection between a small northernEuropean nation and a mighty Oriental empire is based on a source material – plays, paintings, treaties, travelogues etc. – that has hitherto chiefly been neglected, although it played a significant role in earlier times. The Taming of the Turk: Ottomans on the Danish Stage 1596–1896 elucidates, for the first time, three centuries of cultural history as articulated in dealings between the Kingdom of Denmark and the Ottoman Empire seen in a general European context. From the staging of ‘the Turk’ as a diabolical player in royal ceremonies of early modern times, to the appearance of harmless ‘Turkish’ entertainment figures in the late nineteenth century. For centuries the figure of ‘the Turk’ spread fascination and fear – in the theatre of war and on the theatrical stage. On the one hand, ‘the Turk’ represented a spectacular dimension, an imaginary world of pirates, sultans and odalisques; on the other hand, he stood for the actual Ottoman Empire, engaged in long-lasting confrontations and exchanges with Occidental powers.
