A center for cultivating idea exchange and community connection, all within an atmosphere that is welcoming and inspirational.*Architectural renderings are for concept only.

A bold vision to advance Vassar in the 21st Century.

“Today’s global, pressing problems require expertise, research, and dialogue.

Today’s challenges will require bold visions and multidisciplinary, integrative approaches – the kind of education and scholarship Vassar has promoted for more than 150 years, and is primed to advance in the 21st century. The time is right for Vassar to develop and use its convening power to advance the relevance and positive influence of liberal arts in the local, regional, and global community.”

Vassar is uniquely positioned for a leadership role to bring faculty, students, thought leaders, and the public together to confront the challenges facing today’s world. We therefore propose the creation of an Institute for the Liberal Arts. Its mission is to provide a convening venue for thought leaders, community-based organizations, and academics who seek to tackle a common, pressing problem or examine the roots and consequences of important social, economic, educational, environmental, artistic, and intellectual issues.

The Institute: A Gathering Place

– Azamat Kumykov International Businessperson and Scholar, Moscow, Russia Attendee, Summer Institute of Liberal Arts at Vassar, 2018

“Vassar has world-class faculty, and great intellectual depth across many disciplines, but there needs to be a way to share that faculty with the wider world. Vassar can provide an unparalleled learning experience to businesspeople, political leaders, social activists, artists, educators and others from across the globe.”

In order to achieve these goals, the Institute will offer: • Community engagement programs • Leadership development programs • Academic workshops using innovative approaches to address multidisciplinary issues Vassar’s Institute for the Liberal Arts will: • Convene thought leaders and faculty from multiple disciplines whose perspectives would be valuable in addressing national and global questions. • Create learning opportunities for those other than the traditional college student and within the traditional campus structure. • Expand Vassar’s commitment to inclusive education by inviting diverse groups with different views to the campus for discussion. Mary Kay Vrba President and CEO, Dutchess Tourism, Inc.

“We are excited about this concept because it opens us up to a whole new audience of visitors to Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County and the Hudson Valley. The Institute will draw domestically and internationally. The educational aspects, tied to the historical, environmental, and arts programs that already exist here, will open up amazing doors for us.”

– Robert K. Brigham Shirley Ecker Boskey Professor of History and International Relations Faculty, Summer Institute of Liberal Arts at Vassar, 2018

I could be teaching and writing at almost any major research university (in fact, I’m routinely approached about endowed chairs at research universities), but I believe that the small, liberal arts college – and Vassar in particular –is where the exciting new work on the most important issues of our day is being done. I choose to be at Vassar. The Institute for the Liberal Arts will reinforce my wise decision to stay at Vassar and remain engaged with young people struggling to understand the world they live in through a liberal education.”

“I find the prospect of an Institute for the Liberal Arts at Vassar incredibly exciting.
