No two leathers are alike, and each collection tells its own story. Whether it is a beautiful full grain leather made from European bullhide or hand-painted cowhide from South America, it is important to understand each product’s characteristics. Collections are made to complement time periods and evolving style choices, so the key is to choose the right leather for every application. This sourcebook is our guide to do just that.

GLOSS ARY O F TERMS

ANILINE DYE

A transparent, water-based dye that penetrates color throughout the full thickness of the hide when the leather is drum dyed. The natural markings and characteristics of the surface of the hide are visible through the aniline dye if no pigment is applied in additional procedures.

BLUE OR WET-BLUE

The term for hides from which the hair has been removed and then chromium tanned for preservation. The chromium salts turn the hides their characteristic blue color. The re-tanning and finishing processes will transform the wet-blue/blue into leather.

BUFFED LEATHER

The top surface of the hide is removed by abrasion to either completely reveal the soft nap of the leather to produce a smooth nubuck or partially, randomly buffed to reveal only sections of the nap to produce a distressed nubuck. Buffing is also a term applied to the process of partially removing the upper layer of a hide to minimize surface defects.

CHROME TANNAGE

Process of preserving hides in chromium salts turning them from raw material to wet-blue leather. The resulting wet-blue/blue leather is very receptive to the dyeing process. Chromium-tanned leathers absorb color well and are soft.

EMBOSSED LEATHER

Leather embossed with a pattern etched into either a plate or a cylinder.

ENHANCED GRAIN

Leather that has been lightly buffed to minimize surface defects and then printed with a specific grain pattern.

FINISHING

The final stages of the leather making process that determine the look and performance of the leather by applying color, sheen and protective agents.

GRAIN

The surface of the hide after the hair has been removed.

HAND-PAINTED

Artists treat the hide as a canvas before the finishing process to add color and movement.

NATURAL MARKINGS/ VARIATIONS

Hides are a natural product and as such natural markings such as neck & rib wrinkles, veins, texture variation and color variation may occur. Variations may occur within a hide, from hide to hide and from dye lot to dye lot. For example, a full grain leather will often exhibit a difference in the natural grain pattern in the center of the hide from the more pronounced natural grain pattern in the flank areas. The length and direction of the hair on a hair-on leather may be different within a hide and from hide to hide. Hair-on hide dye lots may have longer or shorter hair due to seasonal differences. A leather that has the appearance of a uniform grain pattern has likely been embossed/plated with this uniform pattern.

NUDE/NAKED, PURE/FULL ANILINE LEATHER

Leathers such as Arden, Clover, Haven, and Livonia have been aniline dyed but are relatively untouched by additional coloring or topcoats. The surface of the hide is visible through the aniline dye as pigment is not applied to aniline leathers in the spray coats. Aniline leathers are not fade or stain resistant.

NUBUCK

Full grain, aniline-dyed leather which has been buffed down to create a velvet-like surface.

PATINA

The luster that develops on the surface of aniline leathers due to use over time.

PIGMENT

Opaque coloration applied to the surface of the leather provides uniformity of color thoroughout the surface of the hide and contains protective characteristics found in articles such as Perth.

PULL-UP DISTRESSED

A full grain, aniline-dyed leather in which wax or oil is used in the production process. Pull-up leathers such as Livonia and Lucido lighten and darken when stretched or pulled.

SEMI-ANILINE

Aniline-dyed leather to which a small amount of pigment is applied in the topcoats to increase the durability (stain & fade resistance) of the leather and often to provide some uniformity of color

SKIVING

The process of thinning the leather to a lighter weight.

SPLITTING

The process of cutting the original hide horizontally into three layers. The top (grain) layer is what is offered in this collection. The middle layer is smaller than the top layer and is often used as suede. The bottom layer pieces are smaller still and often used for fashion accessories.

TANNING + FINISHING

The process of turning raw material into useable leather for upholstery, apparel and accessories.

TIPPING

The process of applying a contrast paint or pigment to the embossed or debossed area of a grain or decorative pattern to enhance the texture or highlight the embossment of a leather. As seen in the Tempest and Tierra collections.

VEGETABLE TANNING

The conversion of raw material to leather using tannins taken from plants or trees. The resulting leather has a firmer body than chromium-tanned leather. It can also be the re-tannage step after chrome tannage to achieve the firm body in a chromiumtanned leather.

B RA EM A R Braemar is a chromium-tanned leather with a vegetable re-tannage and a unique, mottled semi-gloss finish. Braemar is a “beautiful comprise.” The semi-aniline finish of Braemar is rich and bold providing more uniformity and durability than a pure, naked aniline yet offering more transparency than a completely pigmented leather. The vegetable re-tannage imparts a firm hand which makes it ideal for applications such as table and desk inlays.

A RCA D IAN Arcadian is a “pull-up,” distressed aniline leather characterized by transparent finish with a soft, polished sheen. The surface of the hide is designed to mark up, characteristic of distressed “lived-in” leather with a warm aesthetic. Pressure can be applied to the surface of the Arcadian to “rub back” or dissipate some, not all, of the topical scuffs and abrasions. By definition, pull-up leathers lighten and darken when stretched and will develop a patina over time.

Please note that there will be some subtle variation of color, tone and surface texture within a hide and from hide to hide even within the same dye lot. The Arden Collection is leather in its purest form. Arden is a naked aniline leather produced from the top selection of European bull hides. Arden is polished and transparent revealing the surface attributes of leather in its most natural state. Neck & rib wrinkles, a visible spine line, small nicks in the grain and color variations are to be expected and distinguish this naked leather from both pigmented leathers and faux leathers. *Please note that there will be inherent variation of color, tone and surface texture within a hide and from hide to hide even within the same dye lot.

L IVONIA

R

Perfectly imperfect. Livonia is an extreme “pull-up,” aniline leather characterized by a waxy hand feel and dramatic pull-up effect due to the oils used in production. The surface of the hide is designed to mark up very easily, exemplary of rustic “lived-in” leather. Pressure can be applied to the surface of the Livonia to “rub back” or dissipate some, not all, of the topical scuffs and abrasions. By definition, pull-up leathers lighten and darken when stretched. Livonia’s natural markings will be on full display. Neck and rib wrinkles, a visible spine line, small nicks in the grain and color variations will be especially apparent on Livonia as part of its aesthetic. *Please note that there will be a variation of color, tone and surface texture within a hide and from hide to hide even within the same dye lot.

Leather is a natural product and hides will vary in size and shape. Although Holland & Sherry sources only the best hides, small variations are part of the inherent nature of the product. In order to convert the COM to COL, please remember the general guideline that 1 yard of 54”wide fabric is approximately equivalent to 18 square feet of leather. This conversion will not work for architectural surfaces (wall panels, headboards, desk inlays or large-scale upholstery). Cuttings for Approval are advised especially for pure anilines. Most CFAs ship within 2-3 business days. Please note that texture may not be fully represented by the cfa which is usually taken from the edge/flank of the hide. If a CFA is not requested, we will require a CFA waiver to be signed. CFAs are not available for Tempest. Reserves are honored for a period of two weeks. Holland & Sherry recommends ordering additional leather such as a half-hide or whole hide as applicable for any loss incurred at the workroom. The average main cutting area of a 50-55 square foot hide is 55-60” W x 55-65” L. The typical largest rectangular cut for a half-hide of hair-on leather is in the range of 24-30” x 50-65”. No allowances or claims will be allowed after ten days of receipt. Absolutely no allowances will be made for material that has been cut or altered. Absolutely no claims for labor. Returns are subject to a 25% restocking fee and must be returned in the original packing material and condition. The following leathers can be used for embossing: Arden, Braemar, Haven, Inverness , Livonia and Clover. Please contact us for information regarding leathers that can be thinned (skiving) to an average of .9 mm. Lead time for skiving is 4-6 weeks and incurs a cost of $5.00 per square foot. Skiving is available on half-hides only.
