CUSTOM PROJECTS

Holland & Sherry’s handpainted studio stands alone in the world of bespoke wallpaper production, where traditional craftsmanship meets modern innovation. With a deep-rooted respect for the art of printmaking, the studio blends meticulous handcraft with technology to produce truly one-of-a-kind wallcoverings.

At the heart of the studio’s capabilities are eight large-format digital printers and four custom-built tablesthat serve as the stage for our detailed handwork. These tools allow us to explore a range of production methods, from printing to painterly. Every step of our process is performed in-house: we fabricate our own handpainting tools, mix paints to match any color request, and carefully layer each design to achieve depth and character.

What truly sets the studio apart is our integrated approach to wallcoverings. Unlike many in the industry, Holland & Sherry’s team of skilled artists handle every aspect of the work directly. From concept to completion, each project is infused with artistic insight, precision, and passion.

Whether it’s developing a bold, large-scale mural or crafting subtle textures that shift with the light, we thrive on the challenge of custom work.

GOAL

Recreate Holland and Sherry’s embroidery in scale and color on grasscloth but more subtle.

This was achieved replicating the embroidery as an illustration and digitally printing on grasscloth. We then did a color match of a selected paint swatch to overpaint the digital print.

GOAL

Create a Moroccan inspired wallcovering based a provided illustration and color pallet.

This was achieved by using the details from the provided image to draw a full image which was then put into repeat. We then digitally printed on grasscloth the final image. The last step would be by hand sanding in the direction of the weft only.

Client Mock-up

GOAL

Create a pair of diptychs using the imagery provided by the client to be screen-printed on our handpainted wallpaper.

This was achieved painted our Nova wallcovering per a standard three step process. We then created a registration for each panel to align the screen-print to the dimensions provided by the client. We did over 800 screen prints in total for this hotel project.

Test Print

GOAL

Create a gilded wallcovering that doesn’t visually panel. The cleint wanted metal leaf squares that adhere to a specific size.

This was achieved by first coating the paper to color match a swatch provided by the client. We then metal leaf over a guilder’s glue, with a custom-made framework laid beneath the metal leaf. This works as “stencil” to create the specified dimensions of 4’’x 5’’.

GOAL

Create a custom crackle textured wallpaper to achieve a unique, artistic finish that adds depth and character. While maintaining cost-effectiveness and durability

This was achieved through 4 handpainted layers. The first two being a solid black coat. Then followed by two off-white coats to cover. We then sanded down the peaks to revel the black underneath.

GOAL

Create a wallcovering based on a Holland and Sherry fabric provided by the Atlanta showroom.

This was achieved by receiving the weave information from the HS fabric division. We then used that and a physical swatch provided to create a rendering that best fit the weave texture. This was then printed digitally on grasscloth.

GOAL

Create a mural that is seamless and connects all four walls. The artwork was provided by Artist Tug Price.

This was achieved by formatting the artwork to the proper scale and providing a hanging order. Each panel varies in width to ensure each trim avoids important objects. After digitally printing on paper, we then hand seal with a protective coating.

Fun Fact: the client has each family member in the mural.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

With R+D we often try to create new techniques that will inspire clients. We wanted to create crackle textured wallpaper that resembles Roman Mosaics.

This was achieved by creating a crackled painted base. We then took an Elizabeth Eakins pattern and did a digital trial on the prepared base. We determined that while beautiful, this product would only be successful in specific locations.

GOAL

We worked with the Artist Gloria Cortina to create the wallpaper for her exhibition at the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian. Her exhibition was about the Cochineal and its global significances in historic and present-day dyes.

This was achieved by shipping Cochineal direct from Mexico. The Cochineal was then ground into a powered and sat in a mixture of grain alcohol and water. We used a primed paper stock and painted with loose following brush strokes.

Fun Fact: The Cochineal is a tiny insect harvested from cacti.

Funner Fact: Its found in red velvet cake - yum

GOAL

Create a wallcovering inspired by an antique tea box paper remnant purchased by a client at an estate sale. The remnant was the only piece left.

This was achieved by extrapolating the pattern information found on the remnant to redraw a workable pattern. We then did three handpainted wash steps. Each step was a different gold to prepare the mylar for print. After digitally printing with white, we finished with a final handpainted step.
