INTRODUCTION TO RUGS
The unique character of our handmade rugs is intimately connected to the way they are crafted. Our commitment to quality begins with the selection of the finest materials available. Each step of the process (from the gathering of wool, to carding, dyeing, weaving and trimming) is done entirely by hand. The finished product reflects the experience and skill in which the weavers have spent generations perfecting. We work directly with family owned and operated mills in Nepal, India, Europe and the Americas that have been producing high-end rugs for decades.
Holland & Sherry’s custom capability stretches beyond just color and design. We employ almost every style and technique of custom rug capabilities, while at the same time mixing in traditional and exotic fibers. Every collection herein has been meticulously designed and produced to showcase the craftsmanship of our weavers and the visionary designs of our creative team and design partners.
A custom bespoke rug is an investment that will age with grace and endure for generations. Our goal is to create an exceptionally personalized rug that is as distinctive as the individual who owns it.

MAKING CUSTOM FEARLESS
With such endless custom possibilities, it may seem like creating and executing the perfect foundation for your project can be a daunting task. Holland & Sherry has the experience, relationships and knowledgeable sales team to lead you fearlessly and confidently toward your design vision.
Holland & Sherry is a full-service resource for the design community with an impressive selection of handmade rugs constructed with only the finest materials available. Our staff is committed to providing exceptional personal service throughout the entire process from initial selection to final delivery and installation.
The process begins with a meeting to understand your needs, and the needs of your client.
Our in-house design team has years of experience translating heirloom art pieces, hand sketches, fabric designs and more into photo-realistic CAD renderings. Along with the design, our creative team will take into consideration all the project parameters and suggest the most effective weave types and fibers for your project. Once a design has been approved, our in-house production team works seamlessly with a select group of artisan mills to spin, dye, weave, carve, clean and finish each handmade piece.

9-10 SAVILE ROW
Returning To Our Ancestral Roots Of Apparel
Holland & Sherry returns to our ancestral roots with the 9-10 Savile Row Collection; a curated offering of heritage textiles inspired by our British beginnings. The designs offer a glimpse into our centuries old association with Savile Row and bespoke tailoring while at the same time embracing the transitional aesthetic of interiors. The 9-10 Savile Row Collection is named after our apparel location based in London. It’s a testament to tradition, an ode to interiors, and just like the name...utterly British. Handmade in Nepal. All rugs available in custom color and content.

DOUG & GENE MEYER PAVILLON
Inspired, Beautiful, And Timely Design
Doug and Gene Meyer opened their design studio in 2004 after a lifetime of personal and professional admiration inspired them to work together. Known collectively and individually as master colorists, each brother brings his singular perspective and visual references to each product and design produced by the studio. Their designs are based on a shared logic, then peppered with historical references from the 18th century to modern times: Subtle and classic forms mixed with bold and graphic shapes, layers of elegance and detail augmented by the brothers love of unexpected color and textural combinations. Handmade in Nepal. All rugs available in custom color and content.

GALBRAITH & PAUL
Studio-Based Traditions
Galbraith & Paul was founded by Liz Galbraith and Ephi Paul in 1986 in Philadelphia. Over the years, their workshop has evolved into a textile design and hand block printing studio, where under one roof a talented team of artisans collaborates to produce this singular collection of fabrics and wallpapers. The studio is the heart of Galbraith & Paul and hand block printing is its soul. The simplicity and elegance of this ancient craft inspire the design process and define the look of their fabrics and wallpapers. The subtle surfaces, blended colors, the small imperfections - all reveal the singular hand of the artisan - and propel the next design. Handmade in India. All rugs available in custom color and content.

FOCUSED ON CRAFT
At Galbraith & Paul, the focus is on process and craft. As an artist, Liz designs all the patterns, drawing inspiration from nature and textile traditions. With each design, she hones her point of view and adds something to the mix. As printmakers, they fabricate their own blocks and use painterly techniques to evoke subtle and elegant surfaces like no other. As painters, they develop and mix their own colors, using transparent layers of pigment for both clarity and depth. As designers, they’ve joined forces with their friends at Holland & Sherry, who along with their artisans, have faithfully and elegantly translated these designs from printing table to loom... always keeping the focus on craft.

GLOSSARY
Terms And Definitions To Help Guide You
ABRASH
A graduated or transitional change in the color of a rug, seen as darker or lighter striations of hue/value due to differences in either the wool or dye batch.
ALLO
Himalayan Giant Nettle is a wild plant, grown in the high mountain areas of Nepal. It has been used for centuries because of its strength and durability. It is indigenous and regenerates quickly after harvesting. It grows like a weed and requires no irrigation, pesticides or mechanical processing.
ALPACA
Similar to Cashmere or Wool, but without lanolin. It has a smother, stronger filament, which makes it softer, shinier, and stronger then regular sheep’s wool, and it is stronger then cashmere. It is also a hypoallergenic fiber and is perfect for people allergic to Wool (typically the allergy is to the lanolin).
ANTIQUE WASH
Combination of washing techniques, shearing, and sun bleaching that creates the look of an antique rug. Every factory has their own perfected technique. This technique can vary like a natural fiber rug in that part of the outcome is based on the performance of the fiber or technician in this case. So, therefore, there is a variance from samples to production and from strike offs to production. This variance can be up to 20% as it is difficult to control this handmade technique.
CARDING
A process in wool spinning that disentangles and opens the fiber and removes vegetable matter; this proceeds yarn spinning and twisting.
CASHMERE
The fiber derived from the cashmere goat, which is found principally on the cold and dry highlands of Central Asia. The low bulk, high loft fibers make cashmere cloths luxurious with a soft and seductive handle and beautiful drape.
COMBING
A process in yarn spinning that removes short fibers and straightens and orients the fiber in a parallel direction; this process is part of the worsted spinning system.
DYE
To add color to fiber, yarn or fabric, in a process requiring dye powders, water, heat and agitation.
FLATWEAVE
Term describing any rug without a pile, including Soumaks, Kilim, and Dhurrie. Aubusson carpets, though flat, are excluded from this category due to factors such as their complexity.
HAND-CARDED
Wool is machine or hand-carded to separate and straighten the fibers, remove impurities and prepare the fibers for spinning. Hand-carding is a traditional method in which a pair of wooden paddles with wire faces is used to brush the wool. The result is a lofty wool that makes spinning easier.
HANDSPUN
Handspun wool yarn is irregular in the tension of its twist; it is inadvertently spun looser in some places and tighter in others. Because of this irregularity, when soaked in dye, handspun yarn absorbs less where it is spun tightly and more where it is spun loosely. What is created is a yarn that, when dyed, is never uniform in color. Another effect of the lack of uniformity is a slightly uneven, ‘nubby’ surface on the rug.
HAND TUFTED
A hand tufted rug takes much less time to make than a hand–knotted rug does because there are no knots that need tying. To make a hand tufted area rug, a rug maker uses a “tufting gun” to push loops of yarn through the backing. Once finished, a scrim is applied to the backside with glue and then a canvas backing is usually attached to that. The rugs is then sheared (cut across the top) cutting the loops to create the pile which is the surface that you see and walk on.
HEMP
Hemp is indigenous to the Himalayan region, grows wild and is harvested after growing season. It requires no cultivation, irrigation or use of pesticides. Hemp has a natural golden tone. It is similar to Allo, however Allo performs better and is easier to clean and has a softer hand.
HIMALAYAN WOOL
AKA Nepalese Wool. Wool derived from sheep that graze in the Himalayan mountain range of Tibet at altitudes of 12,000 feet and higher. Due to this high altitude and extreme cold temperatures, the wool produced has unusually high lanolin content. It is the lanolin content that gives the wool a natural stain resistance, brilliant shine, and a very soft feel to the touch. This wool is considered the finest wool available in the world for the weaving of carpets.
INDIAN WOOL
Hardiest of your wool selections from the hardiest sheep. Courser larger fiber then the other wool options. This is especially good when you need durability over feel.
JUTE
A natural fiber made from certain plants of the linden family, which grow in warm climates, such as those found in India and Bangladesh.
KNOT
The basic technique used to create a rug. The two types of knots that Holland & Sherry primarily use are Tibetan Knot and Persian Knot. The higher the number of knots per square inch, the higher the quality of rug.
LANOLIN
A natural waxy substance that is produced by the sheep and coats their fibres. This acts as a moisture repellent and when left in tact in the fibre after being processed, creates a wool that naturally aids the removal of stains and increases the longevity of the product.
MERINO
The breed of sheep that produces the finest quality of wool fleece; the merino fiber is characterized by a whiter color, greater softness, and a long luminous fiber length than is seen in ordinary wool; the finest Merino sheep are bred in Australia, New Zealand and Patagonia.
MOHAIR
From the Angora Goat and notable for its high luster and sheen, it has the same filament width as wool, but is shinier and stronger due to smaller scales and longer filaments.
MONGOLIAN CASHMERE
Carefully selected from special goats while sustainably sourced. It is an extremely scarce fiber that is meticulously handspun over a three month process. This fiber encapsulates plush pile elegance that needs to be touched to understand its lavish beauty. Smooth fibers often result in a shedding process after your rug is completed. This is completely natural, and is not effecting the construction or durability of your rug. This shedding could last for several months.
MULBERRY SILK / CHINESE SILK / SILK
Our main type of silk: This silk is carefully cultured and is the highest quality silk available for purchase. Their diet consists of exclusively mulberrry leaves. It has a long history of being produced in China, and is also commonly called Chinese silk. This silk has a long refined filament and takes dye very consistently. Due to how much light it refracts, silk has a natural dark side (top of the yarn) and light side (the side of the yarn).
MUGA SILK
Muga silk is the product of the silkworm Antheraea assamensis Native to Assam in India. The larvae of these moths feed on som and sualu leaves. The silk produced is known for its glossy, fine texture and durability. Muga takes dye like any other silk but it is recommended to only dye colors that are darker than the beautiful golden color of its natural state. Very often the silk outlives its owner.
NEW ZEALAND WOOL
Exceptionally white, clean wool is essential when it comes to achieving delicate, light colors. New Zealand sheep graze on open pasture under conditions that produce the whitest natural wool. The depth of shade and clarity is higher in NZ wool than Himalayan wool. NZ wool can be specified when wanting to achieve a white wool or a highly saturated color.
PERSIAN KNOT
Each knot is individually knotted which creates a lower pile. This knot is typical of an oriental rug.
PILE DIRECTION
The direction in which the pile naturally flows. This corresponds to the direction that the carpet came off the loom or tufting machine.
PILE HEIGHT
A measurement (usually in fractions of an inch) of the pile of a carpet, from the base of the primary backing to the tip of the yarn.
SPINNING
The process by which fiber is turned into yarn; during spinning, the fibers are drawn out and twisted together, which holds the fibers together and makes the yarns strong, smooth and fine.
SUNPAT
A fibrous plant grown in the lower hills of the Himalayan region. Traditionally used by the villagers to make ropes and mats, this unique fiber has proved exceptionally suitable for hand woven carpets. Extremely durable and with a natural sheen, the fiber has only recently been developed since the plant has not been abundantly available. Many stages of producing the actual fiber are needed before the plant is ready for weaving - a local secret to the few who know. The Nepali calls the plant Sunpat. We know of no identical plant found anywhere else in the world.
TIP-SHEARED
Effect where the tips of an all-looped rug are randomly sheared to achieve the performance of an all-loop carpet but add the design elements of a cut and loop. Most commonly seen in Hand Tufted rugs.
TWEED
Blending of two or more colors or fibers. A tweed could be a combination of three colored wools to create a textured ground or a combination of the same color in wool and silk or a blend of wool and linen. The options are limitless. Blending wool and silk in the same color is a great way to reduce a 100% silk rug to 50% silk /50% wool, while still maintaining some sheen but at a lower price.
UNDYED WOOL
Wool fiber that is left in it’s natural state. It can be sorted into different shades (from white to black) or left mixed together.
WARP
The vertical yarn that runs the length of the loom and is held in tension; weft yarns are inserted horizontally across the warp and interlace with the warp yarns.
WEFT
The yarn running in the horizontal direction in a woven fabric.
WOOL
The fiber from the fleece of a sheep that is shorn once a year; wool fiber is characterized by a curly structure that can be fine or coarse and has micro-scales on the surface that give the fiber an interlocking property. Wool has excellent insulating properties, which provide warmth in cold weather and help to regulate the air temperature of interiors. Strong and durable, it readily accepts dye colors on its natural cream tone, and is also naturally fire resistant. Wool is a sustainable, biodegradable, 100% natural material.
RUG PRODUCTION INFORMATION
More Facts To Know
THE PROCESS OF CREATING OUR RUGS AND CARPETS
It all begins with our sheep, who over centuries have adapted to the harsh climate of the Himalayan Mountains. Their wool consists of long fiber that is exceptionally durable, with a remarkable softness and texture. Rugs made with Himalayan wool grow more beautiful as time passes by, developing a silk-like patina with age and use. Because of the high altitudes, these sheep need to produce more lanolin, or natural oils, to keep warm—resulting in wool fibers that are long, strong and have a gorgeous texture. Holland & Sherry uses the Finest Himalayan Wool on the market. We then hand-sheer, hand-clean and card it and only then is the best of the best spun into yarn that will become your rug.
DYEING STAGE
After the wool has been spun, it is dyed according to the colors required in the specification. This important part of the rug making process has over centuries developed into an art in itself. Our dye masters have a deep knowledge of the natural materials required to create a rich palette of colors for today’s demanding rug market.
WEAVING STAGE
After preparing the dyed yarns, the weaving process now begins. Tibetan rugs are woven on simple vertical looms on which the warp (the vertical threads that form part of the skeleton of the rug, usually, cotton) is wound. The pile of the rug is created by looping yarn around two warp threads, and then around a guide rod that lies perpendicular to the warp. The looping continues until the end of a row is reached. Once a row is completed, the rod is hammered tight against the row below. The weaver then cuts along the rod with a sharp knife, cutting open the pile. The rod is removed and the row is beaten down against the previous row once again. The two or three weft threads are then inserted along the top of the row, the weaver slides the metal rod back in above the weft, and a new row is started.
FINISHING STAGE
Now the rug is woven, but not yet complete. Highly skilled finishers trim your rug with old fashion iron scissors, sculpting between different colors, enhancing the clarity and vitality of the design in the carpet, until the rug pile is perfect. Our trimmers may work up to two weeks trimming each rug to ensure that it obtains the highest possible quality. After the trimming is completed our rugs are then taken outside where they are washed with gentle soap and water. It must be washed for a minimum of one hour with the use of wooden paddles, soft brushes and combs to remove excess dyes and fibers. Gentle soap and conditioners are used to help enhance the rug’s softness and bring out the sheen and the colors. The rugs are then dried in the open air and sun to set the colors. Once the rug is dried, to ensure perfection, we do a final trim and inspection. From there, the rug begins the journey to your beautiful home.
