This is our first winter in The Cabin and so far, it’s been more wet than cold. It’s so quiet and peaceful especially now that it gets dark so early. Our three basenjis are enjoying their new dog house complete with electric hound heater and thick bed of hay. Sadie has become quite the “big dog” exploring under the cabin when we leave her out for a while. We aren’t going to buy a tree this year. I mean, we live in a forest.

It’s just a matter of deciding on pine or cedar. Cindy is enjoying choosing which of our antique Christmas ornaments to use in decorating the tree and the cabin. Not sure where we will have Christmas dinner. Thanksgiving we dined at the Cracker Barrel in College Station. So maybe we will stay in and cook and maybe we will venture out.

Thing is, the winter holidays are a time for traditions and memories, but things and times change. There is no point in being sad for long because you can’t have the same Christmas or Hanukkah that you had as a child. Savor the old memories and make new traditions which will become new memories. Find something to celebrate and someone to celebrate it with. There are lots of opportunities in our calendar of events.

As we start our fifth year as Natural Awakenings publishers, we are thankful for the calls and emails we get from you, our readers, about an article that made a difference in your life. The Resonating Art and Science of Breath Centered Yoga March 22nd – April 6th 2019 inyasakrama yoga is a Nath yoga tradition from the high Himalaya’s, this immersion is being offered for the first time in its entirety as a 14 - day teaching of all 12 sets (kramas) of yoga asana conferred in complete detail.

It does not matter whether you are proficient in yoga asana or not, this is an intense Himalayan study of the organizational sequencing where the movements are led by the breath.

It is practiced with the invigorating ujjayi breath where each movement is associated with a long smooth inhalation or exhalation. The breath will rarely become labored and the pulse rate will not race but rather an increased sense of calmness and ease will prevail.

The order of the 12 sets works on specific groups of muscles and joints so that the prana from the synchronized breath work is directed in to the cartilage tissue and internal organs for rejuvenation. Varied pranayama (breathing) techniques will be taught further refining the ability to stay mindfully focused in every fiber of your being.

Lights in the Darkness

by Rev. Michael Gott Senior Minister, Unity of Houston very year at this time in the northern hemisphere, the days grow shorter and shorter. Nearly all the ancient Rev. Michael Gott peoples who lived in this part of the world created rituals and ceremonies using light. Lighting the bonfire or the candle to remember that the darkness is temporary, that the light will return. We still do it today. Though in our plugged-in, powered-up world, we rarely experience true darkness, we continue to light the candles. Something deep in the human soul needs to be reminded of the light when it’s most dark.

There’s a powerful metaphor at work here. We can see the darkness of the spirit and soul in our world, reflected in the news stories of violence and hatred. We have our individual dark nights of the soul. Grief, depression, anxiety—each of us experiences those times when it’s so dark in our lives, when it’s hard to see where to put our foot for the next step forward. Where do we find the light to go on?

Carl Jung said, “Who looks outside, dreams. Who looks within, awakes.”

The light to guide us and transform us is within us. Underneath our despair and hopelessness is a light of possibility and promise. If we are willing to examine our hearts and our thoughts, to own every part of our stories and our experience, we

will see that the shadows are not real and that who we truly are shines as brilliantly as the sun.

This winter, I invite us all to look within and find the light of our being.

And shine. The world needs our light now more than ever.

Blue Light Raises Cancer Risk Blue light—a range of the visible light spectrum emitted by most white LEDs and most tablet and phone screens—could be hazardous to our health, a new study shows.

Researchers from the Barcelona Institute for Global Health analyzed the blue light exposure and medical histories of 4,000 people throughout Spain, also utilizing nighttime images taken by astronauts in the International Space Station to assess exposure of residents of Barcelona and Madrid.

They found that those exposed to more blue light at night had between 1.5 to two times the risk of prostate and breast cancer. “Given the ubiquity of artificial light at night, determining whether it increases or not the risk of cancer is a public health issue,” says lead author Ariadna García.

Meditation Soothes Anxiety and Improves Focus Even a single mindfulness meditation session can significantly reduce anxiety and lower heart rates, Michigan Technological University research shows. Fourteen people with mild to moderate anxiety participated in a 20-minute introductory meditation, a 30-minute mindful scan of each body part seeking areas of stress and a 10-minute selfguided meditation. An hour later, the meditators showed both lower resting heart rates and anxiety levels. A week later, they continued to report less anxiety.

Another study at Trinity College Dublin, in Ireland, uncovered an anatomical reason why breath-based meditation practices can enhance mental clarity and focus, as yogis have long claimed.

The research focused on a small area in the brain called the locus coeruleus, which is responsible for producing an action hormone and neurotransmitter called noradrenaline. They found that this part of the brain is affected by our inhaling and exhaling patterns.

“Put simply, this means that our attention is influenced by our breath, and that it rises and falls with the cycle of respiration,” says lead author Michael Melnychuk. “It is possible that by focusing on and regulating your breathing, you can optimize your attention level.”

South Korean women in their first trimester of pregnancy during the country’s stressproducing new year’s holiday had babies that were a third of an ounce lighter on average, discovered an Australian study of nearly 8.6 million mothers covering 17 years. The extent of the birth weight reduction was similar to reduced birth weights found among babies from mothers in Columbia, after they had experienced area landmine explosions during their first trimester.

Scientists from the University of Mississippi and King Saud University, in Saudi Arabia, found that steroidal glycoside compounds in wild yam root known as furostans can help protect liver cells against damage from free radicals.

Yes, water, the stuff you don’t want to drink because it makes you run to the bathroom constantly when you try and drink your quota. Getting that daily quota is so imperative to your health. You are flushing out toxins!

And yes, your body is able to naturally detoxify through the use of its lungs, liver and kidneys. The Boy Scouts of America’s flagship program has been known simply as the Boy Scouts for more than a century, but with girls soon entering the ranks, the group says that iconic name will change. A new name, Scouts BSA, will take effect in February.

Mike Surbaugh, chief executive of the Scouts, says, “We wanted to land on something that evokes the past, but also conveys the inclusive nature of the program going forward. We’re trying to find the right way to say we’re here for both young men and young women.”

Growing Cities Must Add Woodlands

The U.S. Forest Service has determined that as the acreage of urban environments more than doubles between 2010 and 2060, green spaces and urban forests need to expand to maintain air quality, moderate climate change and lower energy use. The federal agency, a division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, favors an increase in the tree canopy that can save cities billions of dollars in pollution removal, energy efficiency and carbon sequestration.

In China, air pollution is such a serious problem that it was responsible for a third of all deaths there in 2016. The government has deployed troops to plant a 32,400-squaremile, pollution-absorbing “sponge” of forested land around Beijing, China’s densely populated and highly polluted capital city.

According to the National Christmas Tree Association, more than 27 million holiday trees were purchased in the U.S. last year. But during the Great Recession of 2007 to 2009, growers didn’t have the funds to plant adequately, and smaller crops are just starting to hit the market now, creating higher prices. Some varieties take up to 12 years to reach holiday height.

Exports from the Pacific Northwest will be down about 1.5 million trees this year, according to Ken Cook, whose McKenzie Farms has 8 million trees planted across 10,000 acres in Oregon. “There’s a huge shortage of Christmas trees, and it’ll continue to be that way for at least 10 years,” says the 80-year-old farmer.

Supplies are also somewhat diminishing in North Carolina and Michigan, which have the nation’s second- and third-largest Christmas tree outputs, respectively.

More households now put up faux trees than real trees. One benefit of real trees stems from their ability to capture carbon dioxide and produce oxygen as they grow. They’re also biodegradable and are usually shipped regionally, not from overseas.

The State University of New York’s College of Environmental Science and Forestry, in Syracuse, has compiled a list of the top 10 new species discovered in 2018, which includes a rare great ape, hitchhiking beetle, omnivorous marsupial lion thought-tobe-extinct and other species that are critically endangered.

Quentin Wheeler, college president and founding director of the International Institute for Species Exploration, says, “As humans alter habitats and contribute to global climate change, species are going extinct at a faster rate than we can name them. They can teach us so much about the intricacies of ecosystems and the details of evolutionary history.”

Uniting for Climate Solutions

n October, Mike and Cindy Hart wrote about taking the road less traveled, and how it has made all the difference.

We are at a crossroads here in Houston, and around the world. We can take the well-trodden path filled with dependency on fossil fuels, plastics, and energy intensive living, or we can take the road less traveled. A road filled with local, organic foods; clean renewable energy; consciousraising meditative practices; and cleaner air, cleaner water, fewer tumultuous extreme weather events.

It is a road not only worth traveling for our overall quality of life and the interdependent web of life around us, but a road we must begin journeying on as soon as we possibly can. Bill McKibben, one of the earliest environmentalists to call attention to global climate change, has long been urging capping greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to 350 parts per million (ppm). We are currently over 400 ppm, with no decrease in site, despite the 2015 Conference of the Parties (COP) landmark Paris climate agreement. There is a direct correlation between GHG levels and global temperatures, as evidenced by ice cores over time. The earth, despite all its natural thermal swings, has never witnessed such high GHG levels, which has been exponentially escalating since the start of the industrial revolution. This

dramatic change is the work of humans, and we need all humans to participate in the solution.

The good news is that we need not wait for the silver bullet. We have all the technology and all the solutions we need to draw down carbon emissions, as documented in Paul Hawken’s Drawdown. We just need to proper motivation to adopt and incorporate the technologies and the less energy intensive way of life. Money is an excellent motivator. When the price of gasoline increases, we drive less and conserve more—evidence of a straightforward market-driven solution affecting change.

Hawkins has said to members of the Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL), a group working tirelessly to generate the political will needed to implement climate action, that putting a price on carbon is one of the most effective ways to reduce emissions.

Economist Bob Litterman, in speaking at a Union of Concerned Scientists panel at Rice University in 2017, said creating a market-driven solution by pricing carbon is the only way to create the necessary changes in a sufficiently rapid timeframe.

An example of an ineffective solution to creating change would be to allow corporations to bring their trash to the city landfill for free. Unfortunately, that is what we have been doing since the industrial www.NaturalAwakenings-Houston.com

revolution – allowing the dumping of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere for free.

No penalties, no fees. But what a cost to all of us in terms of asthma, health, sea level rise and a warmer climate!

As a city, Houstonians are finally noticing the effects of allowing the “free dumping” of carbon pollution. Columnist Chris Tomlinson wrote, “The best solution is to put a price on carbon emissions, thereby improving competitive markets by forcing emitters to pay for their pollution and rewarding companies that don’t emit.”

Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL), founded in 2007 by Marshall Saunders, with over a dozen chapters in the greater Houston area, and over 400 nation-wide, has proposed carbon fee and dividend legislation that if enacted would immediately reduce our use of Wyoming coal, and over time would also reduce our use of natural gas and oil. And as an added perk, this solution will begin immediately to reduce the number of ozone alerts we experience, help clean the air we breathe, and over time, help reduce the risk of extreme weather events.

Cleaner air, less pollution, less extreme weather events, all through legislation that will have bi-partisan support to pass. To help garner that support, Citizen Climate Lobby advocates have been persistently meeting with legislators to educate about and promote putting a price on carbon pollution. There are currently 90 legislators (half from each side of the aisle) on the bi-partisan Climate Solutions Caucus, creating a supportive environment to discuss climate legislation. Solving issues around climate can and needs to be a bridge issue.

here is an art and method to the savoring of a Life. It requires intention and spaciousness. Our intention is necessary in a prioritizing and “goal-setting” sort of way – to make room for the byproduct, spaciousness. In the spaciousness, time becomes available to value what is in the foreground of my unique and individual life. “What is presenting itself at this moment for my consideration?” The consideration element is crucial as our minds cannot possibly access and process the depth of those things worth savoring in just an instant. For example, mindful eating will allow you to savor your food and eat more intuitively, rather than emotionally. Yet, immediate gratification seems to be the hastiness we have set ourselves up for with the “advancements” in technology, moving faster and faster at the cost of our peace, health and sanity. We are waiting longer and longer for an automated system outside of us, an empty presence on the other end of a box to respond to our humanness,

And, even more painfully – we are waiting for that box to decipher our voices and our spirit. So many individuals seem to feel short on time these days, trapped, stuck or powerless within their relationships to each other, jobs, governments, a “healthcare” system, consumption & consumerism, gender identities, corporations, and the list goes on...

To whom and what do you give your time, attention and power? This is how we

create our lives. Understanding how freewill and choices come into play momentby-moment is the key to empowerment.

If I believe that I am free and that I deserve to be free, I must begin to interact with and respond to life accordingly.

I must be willing to give up the “Blame Game!” Anytime I hold any of these aforementioned “entities” responsible for a life not going according to my plan, I am giving my power and energy over to a perceived authority dwelling outside of myself. This is not possible from a perspective of Natural Law. To anchor our shift in awareness from external authority to internal guidance we must become aware of our fear-based contractions. Reliance on external things, ideas, and images for our wellbeing keeps us rigid in our body. This in turn limits our choices and our creative expressions creating dis-ease.

A few points to ponder: n If I am created in the likeness and image of a divine intelligence then I must be divine intelligence. n Does this then afford me dominion over the earth and my own body, life and present incarnation? n Karma is the natural law of cause and effect. n The Buddha defined karma as intention; whether the intention manifested itself in physical, vocal or mental form, it was the intention alone, which defined moral character as good, bad or neutral.

As I journey along my own karmic path, I am frequently presented with opportunity to pause and reflect on how I create repetitive patterns in my life that do not serve me. This is the first step toward understanding the process of evolution, growth and resolving karma. Here’s a quick-study of my particular process:

Setting my intention or goal for what I do want to create.

Focusing on my new creation with eager anticipation, rather than anxiously obsessing over old, unproductive patterns (requires self-forgiveness, letting go and a willingness to try something new).

Trying it on. Feeling and savoring what I will experience when I achieve my new goal. Making it experiential and real on the emotional, mental and spiritual planes of existence.

Consistency! Creating space for daily practice – repeating steps 1,2,3 and 4 with joyful expectancy!

A GLOBAL WAKE-UP CALL Collective Consciousness Nears Spiritual Tipping Point

all it enlightenment, awakening, transcendence, self-realization or any of the myriad terms used to describe the ultimate higher state of consciousness. People have been seeking it for millennia, but beyond peak experiences of heightened awareness, only a few spiritual figures, Jesus Christ and Gautama Buddha among them, are known to have lived in this exalted state. Yet, an unprecedented awakening has been underway since the 19th century.

Modern-Day Advances

Humanity’s collective consciousness took an unexpected turn in 1968 after The Beatles captured the world stage. The iconic British group became agents of change in more ways than music when their search for answers to life’s big questions led them to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s spiritual center in Rishikesh, India.

Their interest in Transcendental Meditation (TM) sparked a surge of interest in enlightenment and meditation, providing the West with a popular means of cultivating higher states of awareness.

Scientists that tested the phenomenon at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, in upstate New York, discovered, “Once that number grows above 10 percent, the idea spreads like flame.”

Mahesh predicted that only 1 percent of humanity is needed to create enough good vibrations to usher in world peace.

While the figures required to reach this critical mass can be debated, it’s certain that the old ways no longer work, and we are quickly running out of time to adopt viable solutions to mounting global crises.

Despite this sense of urgency, we have no clear idea of where we are on the scale of transformation. Yet leading voices point to promising signs of progress in a developing collective awareness that acknowledges life’s interconnectedness and embodies life-affirming beliefs and values.

Dianne Collins, author of Do You QuantumThink?: New Thinking that Will Rock Your World, in Miami, suggests it’s time to wake up to the fact that we are living in a quantum age and still using thought and language shaped by the Industrial Age. She discovered a burgeoning underground culture that she calls the “consciousness crowd” while researching her book tour audience.

“These individuals are using new thinking and recognizing the worldview of interconnectedness based on modern science. The media doesn’t recognize that thinkers such as these represent the new mainstream, and no one realizes the tipping point is already here,” she says.

Cate Montana, author of The E-Word: Ego, Enlightenment and Other Essentials, in Hawaii, likewise is convinced the movement has reached critical mass and is hopeful the perceived tipping point is closer than we think. “Every moment we’re awake, we’re being conditioned to believe in our limited physical nature and separation from everyone and everything around us.

This is why we must re-educate ourselves regarding our full nature,” she says.

News headlines of global conflicts and ecological decimation make it appear that we are regressing, Montana says, but we are not going backwards. “The nature of life is growth, expansion and evolution.

As one example, some among the medical community now accept the validity of energy practices such as acupuncture, tai chi, qigong and reiki. None of these words were even being bandied about in the U.S. 50 years ago.”

Ron Dalrymple, Ph.D., a quantum field psychologist practicing in Fort Myers, Florida, believes the threshold is close and that his quantum unified field theory explained in his film, The Endless Question, can win over skeptics. “I use mathematics, science and storytellers that have studied consciousness to explain in lay language my theory, which proposes that the mind is an energy field that extends beyond the brain, and its nucleus is the superconscious. Viewers are led to the undeniable reality of what we all are and to the need for creating a culture of enlightenment where we encourage and inspire one another to greatness,” says Dalrymple, author of Quantum Field Psychology: The Thoton Particle Theory.

an you imagine doing a meditation retreat for 10 whole days?! To finally have the time and space to settle down and see, discover, and realize many things we were just too busy to notice about ourselves? An awesome chance, indeed! And now, even better, imagine a 10-day retreat under the guidance of two Awakened Zen Masters!!! That is exactly what happened in October when 50 people, a very diverse group, had flown in from all over the world, to receive the Awakened Zen Masters’ guidance to help us understand, realize, and touch with Awake.

Yes! This past October, the two Awakened teachers, Zen Master Thich Dieu Thien of Universal Door Meditation Center, and Zen Master Thich Thong Hoi of Suoi Tu Meditation Center, opened our minds and hearts in various ways, showing us that if we Wake Up from illusion, we can live truly happy and free, disturbed by nothing. Through their unlimited Wisdom and Compassion and through their teachings which are always fresh, unique, and full of clarity, the two Zen Masters guided us step-by-step, based on each of our capacities to touch the Awake within ourselves.

One example the Zen Masters gave was about knowledge for the mind versus touching the Awake inside us. When we acquire knowledge from a book, it is automatically stored in our mind, waiting to be used. But with Awake, the Zen Masters helped us open our “wisdom” eye to see the ego system of illusion controlling us at that moment causing us to suffer, hurting ourselves and the people around us. The Zen Masters guided us to look within,

to recognize the voice in our head, and at that very moment, have deep realizations about ourselves and who we truly are… Awake; we are not our False Mind!

When the Zen Masters guided us to catch our thoughts, feelings, and emotions, we were able to have space and ask “what is it?” that can see all those things arise? We soon came to realize more and more about what really is Awake and who the Awake teachers are! We seem to always miss this important piece because we always shine the light outside of ourselves looking for happiness or to boost our ego to feel better about ourselves. The Zen Masters helped us to see the truth about ourselves, as it was; to see how our ego controls us every moment. From there, they showed us the way to see the truth about our ego system so that one day they can help us Wake Up and break that ego system that keeps us trapped in illusion and suffering.

Some of us have a background in energy and healing work, which allowed us to easily connect to the Zen Masters’ Awake energy, and their Awake World, which is pure compassion and infinite wisdom. Most of us observed that when we observed the Zen Master’s teachings, interactions, or simply walking alone, we could feel their Awake essence. Their Awake energy was tangible, we could feel it in their actions and speech. Their Awake energy was always the highest level of lightness, brightness, and clarity. They held no judgments or criticisms, they were the purest and truest form of Awake Compassion and Awake Love we had ever experienced! We could feel and see that they wholeheartedly help people of all ages, races, religions, culture and social status. The Zen Masters were always disturbed by nothing and it

felt like they had everything!

We learned there are different styles of applying Awake meditation to connect to the Zen Master’s Awake World. It is not limited to just sitting! There is also walking, movement, eating, and working meditation. Each is a necessary tool to connect deeper to Awake. We practiced each of these several times a day, for all 10 days. The Zen Masters encouraged us to practice each technique as we go about doing things in our everyday lives. They constantly reminded us to remember the goal of why we practice… to Wake Up from the system of ego.

The meals and snacks were simple, delicious, nutritious and totally filled with Awake love! Yes, Awake Love can even be in the food we prepare and eat! Many students shared that they could feel the Awake center was filled with the Zen Masters’ Awake energy creating such a calm, peaceful, stable environment.

Coming into the retreat, many of us had a heavy, dense energy or body problems. After a few days of retreat and being around the Zen Masters, we felt something change in our mind, body and heart. We each had a different level of this open, light, fresh feeling unlike any we had ever experienced before. The Zen Masters explained that our wisdom mind had started to open and the Awake energy had started to shift inside of us. Over the 10 days, we were constantly feeling and seeing these changes; everyone’s experience was unique and personal.

Our final day of the retreat ended with a beautiful and heartfelt tea ceremony. We showed our gratitude to our Zen Masters for their unconditional love and compassion by sharing our profound realizations and life changing breakthroughs.

Truly, it was amazing to see how much we had all realized about ourselves through the infinite compassion of our dear Zen Masters. We all came from different backgrounds; however we had become a tight knit group, a flock of birds who supported each other’s transformations and emotional breakthroughs.

Practice generosity. Neuroscience research shows that performing an altruistic act lights up the same pleasure centers in the brain as food and sex. When an impulse to be generous arises, act on it and notice the expansive feeling that blesses us when we share.

Play and have fun. The holidays allow us to let ourselves feel like we did when we were kids. Be around children if possible. Tune into and take delight in their enthusiasm. Singing or dancing is an excellent way to move out of our head and open our heart to the joy within.

Remember that happiness is contagious: If we’re happy, we increase the odds that close friends and family will be happy, too.
